The wines are solid. We tasted 2012 Angel Camp Vineyard Pinot (Anderson Valley), 3 Stars (of 5); the 2013 Emerald Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir (Green Valley), 2.5 stars, 2012 Azaya Ranch Vineyard, 3.5 stars; pinot Blanc, 4 stars; 2012 Rued Vineyard Chard, Rich and smooth 4 of 5 stars. The down side: there were only 3 servers and everyone coming in after us, got started and served tastings before we did. We had extended times between each tasting. Our hostess/server spent a lot of time with others explaining the wines. Definitely felt like a second class citizen here, which is unfortunate as the wine shows promise. read more

This winery was very pleasant and the wine tasted great. Like most in the area they are big in Pinot Noir. They also had an appetizer included in the tasting fee. Our only complaint has more to do with the area than with this winery. They charged $15 for a tasting and the cost of the wines was between $38-$58 per bottle which compared to Napa is not too high but we think that for the money Lodi wineries are a better bet. The tasting rooms in Lodi usually charge only $5-7 and many times are free and if there is a charge they comp it towards the cost of a bottle if you buy one. Also in Lodi it is less crowded and you get the opportunity to get to know the winery and the owners better. read more

Family run business that grows excellent wines. Met both Steve (Dutton) and Dan Goldfield) while I was visiting - they are good people! Went here today with a couple friends as we were exploring the area. Had a lovely educated tasting with Nicole - a bubbly darling Australian gal. They had some very very lovely wines. We particularly liked a couple of their Pinot's. It's a crisp clean tasting room along Hwy 166 with a lovely outdoor area where it appears they do seated tastings too. This is one of our favorite wineries. Pinot Noir is the main focus but they also make excellent Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Zinfandel, and Syrah. You will find knowledgeable and friendly staff pouring wines in this inviting tasting room. We are always recommending this winery to others. Look for the upcoming events too. incredible experience! walked in with a complete set table for our tasting, with customized menus that had our names printed. it was our first tasting in the area (out of towners) so we didn't know what to expect & this exceeded our expectations by a lot!! it set a high bar for the rest of our tastings. I had a good experience here. The staff were very friendly and curious. I had a card that gave me a free basic tasting. I liked their wines and got one of their chardonnays. I would have gotten more but price and room in my luggage held me back. I would go back though in order to learn more. Going to bump the rating a star for earnest effort to impress. The tasting room manager read about our bad experience and eagerly tried to make good by sending us two complimentary bottles for us to re-try. So I did a blind tasting with the Chard, and while there still wasn't an interest in DG, I noticed it benefited greatly by being drank at warmer temps and by being allowed to breath much longer than typical Chards. Something we might have noticed had we not been rushed through the original tasting. At any rate, I'm impressed with the effort to please, and I recommend everyone give Dutton-Goldfield a try and judge for themselves. I personally loved this place. Our customer service person Blake, provided EXCELLENT customer service. Excellent knowledge with a super pleasant personality. As for the wines we concentrated on the Russian River Pinots and this vineyard makes, some amazing Pinot and a Zinfandel that caught me way off guard. Adam was super helpful and had great explanations about where the grapes were grown, where the vineyards are, the growing conditions, which side of the hills had what kind characteristics and lead to what kind of flavors.... It was a really relaxing and educational experience! They even showed us The different soils! The Walker Hill Chardonnay is really special and we talked ourselves into more bottles as we enjoyed the weather and the breeze. Enjoyed a tasting at Dutton-Goldfield as our second stop during our Wine Cube tour. I did the classic tasting, while my husband did the larger one. We came to try the Pinot & Chards, but trying hard to stick to our "one bottle per winery" rule, we ended up with a great bottle of 2009 Cherry Ridge Syrah. The Pinots weren't bad by any means - just felt that we'd had other Pinots that trip at lower price points that we liked better. The tasting room is comfortable - the staff was friendly - and they gave us some recommendations for dinner that night. Tasted the entire family of pinots and had a great gewürztraminer as well. Freestone Hill was my personal favorite pinot. Can't go wrong here. Great wine, great host. Found this winery on yelp. Friendly staff. All the wines on the tasting were awesome. I really liked the Riesling (and I generally don't like white wines). The outside was very relaxing. This review is based on the man in the picture: I have been to this winery two times. I apologize for the lack of his name, but the bald guy helped us the first time. He was the rudest wine tasting associate my family and I have been served by. One of my family members is in the industry, and had not received his business cards yet because he had just started a few months prior and the business cards were on their way to his job. This bald man asked for a business card, and we told him why he had not had them yet. The associate then began giving us the excuse that this winery does not make a lot of production so we only could have one free tasting for the three of us. He made it very uncomfortable for the rest of the tasting. He made sure to help everyone else before having to come to us. We came back again months later trying to give Dutton-Goldfield another chance. As soon as we walked in the door, this bald man said to us "Oh, look who's here,"and started chuckling, like it was an issue that we came back to visit. Luckily, a new associate poured for us and not him. We really enjoyed the wine and wanted to purchase from this winery, but I did not want to give money to help support this man working at this tasting room. My family member works in the area and has customers coming into his tasting room constantly complaining about how rude this man was to them, and how he ruined their tasting experience. This associate of yours is helping you lose a lot of money and valuable customers. Now we always skip Dutton-Goldfield and go to Red Car next door. They are more than happy to have us and treat us like customers should be treated. Thanks to the terrible service at Dutton, Red Car receives tons of business from us now. read more

Down to the basics! Dan Goldfield is a great winemaker I say that because his Sanchietti, Freestone and Emerald Ridge are all excellent if they are not sold out you are lucky! My favorite wine though is the Cherry Ridge Syrah! Elegant, with red fruits and a hint of violets! A wonderful cool climate Syrah Vineyard. The 09's are stunning! Limited releases of Emerald Ridge Pinot and Freestone Pinot. The 09 Morelli Zinfandel was excellent and the 09 Stoetz Zinfandel was very good as well. read more

Wines are above average 3.5 for the price point. Service from staff was excellent! Very friendly and informative and poured us two extra wines not on list....price of tasting was $15 Wines: Riesling is dry and a decent for this varietal but not a fan. 1st "extra" wine offered was the Chardonnay (10 months in oak but the acidity smoothed out the oak) very unique chard and I did like it 3.5 star 2012 Dutton Ranch Pinot - not bad but not smooth enough for me 3 star 2011 Freestone - again 3 star...too acidic for my taste ...and at $72/bottle, no 2012 Emerald Ridge Pinot (from Green Valley of RR Valey) --now this is good! Smooth tannins but by far better than the first two pinots that were highly rated by wine enthusiast (92/95 respectively)...at $58 I would by far prefer this wine of all their offerings ...4 star but would not buy at that price point 2012 Azaya Ranch Pinot (Marin) 2nd offered not on list (nice of them) - lot of jam/fruit...good 3.5star Spectrum Red Blend - pretty good blend of 2011 and 2012 multiple varietals. I would drink it if poured but would not buy it. It was worth the $15 tasting fee .. But overall A-Ok for the price point read more

This is some of the best wine in the area. Their Fox Den Pinot Noir and Rued Chardonnay are definitely my favorites and the staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. David always provides great service and a fun experience. He's always smiling, making great restaurant/winery suggestions and makes the experience personable and never routine. Everyone that I take wine tasting (and I probably go too often) always say that Dutton Goldfield and David are their favorite. Now to address the two negative reviews, which I've never done before, but I feel they're completely unjustified. 1. I'm doubting that the person that gave the scathing review on 9/17 was really going to purchase wine since she didn't even want to pay for a tasting. I would hope that her friend in the business would know and explain to her that smaller wineries can't give out free tastings to everyone, as they do not produce mass amounts of wine. It's almost irresponsible of her friend to not educate her. We're not talking about Two Buck Chuck here. I'm not sure why she labeled David as rude? Because he's doing his job and not giving her something for free? 2. Poor Planning does not mean bad service. Expecting a winery to honor your reservation when you're 35 minutes late, already in three wineries deep and with 13 people is asinine. Enough said. The wine is awesome and should not be missed. Big tasting room, with lots of space at the bar and areas to sit with tables, both outside and inside. The very friendly staff, will pour multiple tastes and spend time with you explaining their wine, the region the process, etc. I'd say this place should be approachable for "beginners". There is no pretense or snobbery, they like what they do and have some damned fine wines. If you're in the area, make it a point to taste here - like much of the Russian River appelation, you better like Pinot Noir. Their whites were good, but to me the Pinots were reason to re-visit. read more

Having been in the Wine Industry for almost 10 years now, I can certainly recommend the Dutton-Goldfield Winery. Last week I went in there for the third time in the last 3 years. I make it a point to keep abreast of what the really talented wineries are doing . They make incredible wines and the tasting room is one of the most relaxed and professional I have found. I met David behind the bar who is the tasting room manager. I found him to be one of the most knowledgeable wine staff I have ever met. He gave me a really great summary of the vineyards associated with each wine....lots of fun details which most wineries do not take the time to tell you. BTW - another great perk of chatting with David is his immense music knowledge!! If you love music, pick his brain and you will have something fun to do while you taste great wines. I was reading Michelle M's review and have no clue what she is talking about. Possibly she was upset that she could not get the discount she felt she was entitled to, even though she was with a friend whom couldn't prove they were in the industry either. Seriously, she says she "enjoyed the wine" and gave them a one star......really?? Life is too short The day I was there the tasting room was hopping and the staff took care of all the customers very professionally and with a great attitude. The wines here ranged from mediocre to pretty good. The pourers were quite hospitable, making our tasting a good-not exceptional- experience. While at other area wineries (not to be mentioned here) we mentioned that we liked the wines at Dutton Estate better, and got several "we agrees". Taste for yourself and decide. read more

Stopped in again to DG during a wine tasting trip to Sonoma. Holy cow this place is fantastic. Last year, this was our first stop of 8 on our first trip in to Sonoma and it set the standard very high. This time it was the 8th of 9 stops and it's simply the best in the greater area we've found. They have set the gold standard for pinots in my book. We love the Devil's Gulch and the MacDougal. Both amazing. Both different. The chard is also oaky and crisp and, again, amazing. The wine pourers are always friendly, knowledgeable, and make great suggestions. I can't wait until we have more room to store wine so we can sign up for the wine club! read more

I visited a few weeks ago after hearing about their great pinots (which were amazing btw!) but fell in love with their selection of aromatic whites. The team was friendly and we enjoyed the relaxing patio next to the fountain. I wish we had planned ahead and scheduled a food pairing because they looked amazing! I ordered a couple mixed cases to ship to my mother and they gave me a great deal on the wines and took care of the shipping charge! A top notch spot IMHO! read more
