What a great experience! We took my sisters best friend here for her 21st birthday. We picked this place because she specifically likes cider and had never been wine tasting, and they have both cider and wine. We started off with two ciders and they threw in a rosé, and then we ended with a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot noir. We also picked this place because they allow you to bring outside food for a minimal extra charge. We brought lunch and a birthday cake to celebrate. The staff was very inviting very and informative. Cider flight (5/5): You can choose an all cider flight or a cider/wine flight. If I went back, I would probably choose to get both cider and wine. I loved that there was a cider tasting in the area, as tastings for me are more about the experience and the vibe than the drink. I like ciders but lean more towards the sweet ones. Service (5/5): Reservation was made a few days in advance. We called a couple of hours before our reservation to see if we could push it back because lunch was taking longer than expected, and they were very accommodating. Since we were pushing towards closing it meant that we couldn't stay very long, but I'm glad that they gave us that option. Check-in when we arrived was easy and someone came out to tell us about the ciders. We were one of the last the leave but they didn't rush us and asked to see if we enjoyed our tasting as we left. Ambiance (5/5): Relaxed, low key vibes. Picnic benches under umbrellas, looking out at chicken coops. My only wish was that we spent longer to enjoy the day. I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it. My table did the cider / wine tasting and liked the variety. There were explanations about the cider making process, the area where the grapes and apples were grown as well as recommended food pairings. The tasting was 2 different ciders (heirloom & farmhouse) Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot. We were fortunate and got a pour of their rosé. We were celebrating a 21st birthday, so brought sandwiches and birthday cake with us, this is allowed for a small fee. They have music Sunday afternoons thru October, but our tasting was a little too early to catch it. I purchased the heirloom cider- it was the table favorite. Had such a nice tasting at Horse and Plow! We had our choice to sit anywhere we liked. While the outside is GORGEOUS, it was a little cold so we sat in the back room where they had couches and a table for larger groups! For $25 you get to taste 4 wines, and for $18 we added on a cheese plate. It was on the pricier side for a tasting (and no fee waived if you buy bottles), but it was really nice and a great location. There was also no offer to "revisit" anything to help us make up our mind about what we wanted to buy like other wineries. I loved everything, but I don't know if I think their wine club would be worth it. Again, their wine was on the pricier side and the club discount was only 10% per shipment. I know there are MANY more expensive wines in our area but this was my experience and out of my price range. That being said, I went home with a bottle of Pinot and I'll definitely be back because the outside area is so beautiful and it's nice having somewhere local to bring people from out of town. read more

Horse & Plow was a breath of fresh air with more of a picnic-at-a-barn feel rather than an ultra-manicured stone-and-stucco tasting room. We were seated same-day, without a reservation, even though we came on a busy live music weekend day. Technically we weren't supposed to be served flights but the super kind folks here allowed us to try their cider AND their wine flights. All of them were solid, and everything was really carefully explained to us. I wonder if it was the owner himself doing the explaining, because he was really doing it with a passion that you don't always see in your average winery server. I enjoyed trying a number of apple cider varieties that I'd never even heard of before, while also enjoying some good music in that nice picnic setting. And as I understood it, there's even a chicken garden for kids, but don't quote me on that! We liked the ciders plenty. But, we were in town from the East Cost and not able to take a lot with us. So I asked how much it would cost us to ship bottles home. If the shipping price was reasonable I might have gotten around 6-8 bottles of cider (which doesn't exactly make me a high roller, but it's something). I was told to speak with a lady, who I assume is a co-owner, who could help me with shipping. But once I explained that I wanted to know the price for shipping before going ahead with a purchase, it felt like this lady decided to be rude thenceforth. It was as if she realized she wasn't making a sale, or decided that I was a "difficult customer," and decided to just be mentally done with me. She walked away from the ordering spot back to the bar and kept giving me a sort of mean look while her co-owner or colleague came out, patiently explained my shipping options, and then sold me 3 bottles to carry out. During that entire exchange she shot me icy glares. What did I do to deserve that? Look at the other reviews and you'll see that many of them talk about "a lady" who mistreated or was rude to H&P customers for a variety of reasons. Hey, all I got was a mean look, but some other folks were treated pretty badly. It's still worth coming here. The ciders are solid, the wines are decent, the atmosphere is great, people are cool, and the weekend music is lots of fun. Just be aware that you may interact with this lady and she may give you an experience like some of these other reviewers have had. read more

Wish I would have sorted the reviews from Newest versus Yelp review. Our kids are kids, they run around, they play, they're pretty sweet, but they are kids. Pretty sure one of the owners came over and asked for our kids who were 20 feet away from us to be with our children at all times. Are they supposed to sit on my lap? If you're not kid friendly, then put it on your website and we won't come. My kids were looking in the fountain, touching the plants (I literally raise them in my enclosed garden at home, so they know to be gentle). The woman with short black hair, assuming owner or manager, said they couldn't speak to guests who were tasting, when my kids were literally not talking. Nothing more pisses me off than a place that isn't kid friendly, not setting the rules outright. PS - Be sure to read the other reviews. Seems like this woman is anti-kid, but also issues with elderly and people of color. Screw this place. Spend your money elsewhere. PSS - As I can't respond directly to the owners comment on my review, I didn't insult her, I spoke to her and told her that this isn't the first time she has had a negative review due to children. She's the only person I chose to call out on her behavior. Furthermore, I returned my unfinished tasting, after this interaction, as it had upset me so much. This place is a must when visiting the Sonoma Valley. We came on a Monday afternoon and were the only patrons for at least an hour, so it was nice a peaceful. We were served by Josh, who was amazing and personable, felt like he intimately knew each wine and cider they offered. The wine itself, honestly, probably some of my favorite wine I've had in my life. Each wine was clean and refreshing, very easy to sip and enjoy all day. They have some cheese and charcuterie plates available but the star of the show is the ciders. I want to begin by saying that I love cider but most domestic ones are waaaaaay too sweet, more soda than cider. These had bracing acidity and appropriate amount of funkiness.They we're all great but the heirloom really captured my heart with the perfect balance of fruit and funk. I am going to admit that I am not the biggest fan of dry cider. My palate just is not that refined.I knew they focused on dry ciders going in. Did I pick up bottles of their stuff? No. Did I still enjoy my tasting experience, and appreciate the wonderful little outdoor area they have set up? Yes. Even though their ciders were dry, they had some nice nuanced complexity that even the person with the drinking palate of a freshman year sorority pledge could enjoy. We came here for wine tasting and had a lovely time. Currently, you do need to make a reservation online. For the tasting, they didn't have wine flights, but there is a nice selection of wines and ciders by the glass (we ended up buying bottles of the ones we tried!). They don't have their own vineyard, but source from others. They offer both a cheese and charcuterie plate, and we enjoyed their cheese plate a lot and purchased one of the cheeses. The grounds are on the smaller side- a lovely area entirely shaded by a central huge tree and other flora. It was great even for a hot day. They have ample seating and picnic tables. They allow dogs, but I wouldn't say dog "friendly". We had our calm, well-behaved dog on a leash, but he wasn't tied up, and a lady came out to tell us not so nicely that he needed to stay tied up because of the chickens (which were more than 100 yards away in a coop. Oh and yes there are chickens! Definitely recommend stopping by to try their ciders since I think they are one of the few places that offer hard cider. read more

We have visited and recommended Horse & Plow so many times over the past few years. We always loved the service and their product, the outdoor seating is amazing, and the fact that they welcomed children was great. Unfortunately for us this all changed during a recent visit. We went for our normal visit with friends who were members there (they recently canceled because of this experience) and we were having a nice time. Brought lunch like they allow, and set up at a picnic table for a two hours. Soon after arriving we noticed that one of the owners was very short with us. We thought that maybe it was because we had kids, and we turned out to be correct. (Our kids were well behaved and we were with them the other time, the same as we have always done) When we were about to leave I went to pay. As I was getting ready to pay with my card the card reader was snatched from my hands, it had just been handed to me by the other owner. I wrote it off as a weird incident, didn't care much about it. But when our friends went to pay they heard her telling people that it should be a better atmosphere because the kids were leaving. So it was true this was the problem the entire time. The owner who was being rude tried to apologize but then finished it off by saying that we were not helping them uphold this image that they have for themselves. We left bummed out and disappointed. Our friends canceled their membership. We will not be recommending them anymore because it is not a family friendly environment and they have become a disappointment. read more

This place was laid back and the staff was friendly. The barn was rustic with lots of lavender blooming in front and picnic tables and corn hole out back for guests. We made the trip because the whole place, both indoors and outdoors, is dog friendly. When we showed up on a Sunday afternoon, the place was super busy with most of the tables full. The two staff members were super nice but also a little too overwhelmed to provide more info about our drinks. We got the cider flight and a cheese plate. I thought the first cider seriously smelled like toilet bowl, and it really made me struggle since it was supposed to be the "best" of the flight. Maybe my nose is extra sensitive, but I couldn't convince myself to even taste it. The other 3 in the flight smelled better, although another one also smelled kind of dank and on the edge of acceptable. My SO didn't notice the stink at all, so who knows. The style of cider is definitely DRY DRY DRY, with that exception of the one with honey. The cheese plate was generous in portion though not fancy. They gave corn chips that had some sort of nacho seasoning on them? Not sure if they were trying to go norm-core/embrace the basic on purpose or not. We enjoyed the plate nonetheless. Horse & Plow was a mixed experience for us. Upon arrival, there were two men working who greeted us with open arms. They were so patient, taking the time to explain all the cider options to us & allowed us to order food for them. They delivered the food & made a friendly comment about the dog in our group that was off leash but well behaved, even bent down to pet her. Suddenly after about 30 minutes into our stay a women approached us threatening to put the dog on a leash or we will have to leave because it is the chickens home and not our dogs home. (Of course we complied but with the way the other people who worked there treated the dog we had no idea we were doing anything wrong so it just kind of took us off guard?) we apologized as she simply walked away and did not want to give us the time of day. Next a food truck pulled up and parked right infront of us with the Diesel engine running an hour before food would even be served. We figured it was then our time to go. I approached the woman to close out my tab reminding her of all we had. She looked over at our table and stated that there were 3 bottles on the table (which were bought and closed out for by other members in our group already). She gave me a side eye look and just really rubbed me the wrong way. I respectfully told her they were already paid for, which she then went out of her way to confirm with the man worker by calling him over. So all in all, very mixed review. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but she was not welcoming in that moment. The men were great and I believe would have been a fully great experience without this lady. Horse & Plow has been on our radar for several years, but every time we've been in town it's over days when they've been closed (open Fri - Mon only). Until now! When I saw that our dates aligned with them being open, I quickly emailed to confirm they're dog friendly (they are!) and made our tasting reservation. Loved the chill vibes upon our arrival. We received a warm welcome from our pourer (perhaps named Joel? Or Josh? I'm so bad with remembering names...) who invited us to grab a seat anywhere we like. We opted to sit at the bar, though there's a cozy back room with sofas and local art, as well as outdoor options (just not on this cold, rainy day). I was surprised that they had us pay for our wine tastings up front (including tip, which is always awkward pre service). We ended up buying a bottle after our tasting, and it would have been simpler to do this in one transaction instead of two. There were other wines we enjoyed, but they only waive the tasting fee if you sign up as club members which was not on our agenda this trip. Not wanting it to get out of hand pricy for us we chose our favorite selection only and called it a day. I'd like to come back and sample their ciders. read more

Not many true cideries left in Sonoma county that you can visit on a daily basis, so when I saw Horse & Plow, I was quite excited. They offer not only a cider flight, but a wine flight, so I was quite thrilled for that. Finding the facility and parking is a breeze, but busy times of the day can be tough due to it having limited parking and right up against a "highway". We were greeted upon arrival by a very kind staff member who gave us the down low on their flights and tailored it to our pallet which was quite nice. We ended up going for a cider flight and a wine flight, which ran $14 for the cider and $18 for the wine flight (Purchased waved with two bottle purchase). I will spare everyone the tasting notes of each wine and cider and skip right to the important points. The wine flight was good, but nothing stellar, I honestly wish I would of stuck with the cider flight. The lone wine that was quite tasty was the Gewurztraminer, while the others were not quite that great. I do not want to come off negative as many may like them, but I would like to be honest about what my palette preferred. On the other hand the ciders were quite good, not your typical American sweet ciders, more so on the European dry and "dank" side. I could easily drink Hops & Honey Dry Cider all day, superb flavors (Went home with a bottle). That is not to take away from the other ciders, which were good, but for me the Hops $ Honey Dry Cider stood out above the rest, with more a Hops kick to it (Go figure with the name). With all of the said it was a middle of the road rating for me on one hand I had wished I would of just went with the cider side as the wines were standard compared to the many others in the area. Allow me to share how a business can go from 5 stars to negative 100 in 2 seconds flat. My friends made a reservation at Ramen Gajin for Saturday night. We had a few hours to kill so she suggested a bevi at Horse & Plow. Parking was a big tight but when we looked around a second time, one of the (male) owners saw us and guided us to a spot right in front. Score. We entered a beautiful tasting area that was buzzing with conversation, music and oyster shucking. After ordering drinks and a half order of the fresh oysters, we made our way outside to one of the tables near the outdoor heating lamp. My friend was invited, by the owner, to a small party they were having, in what I call the art lounge. It is a smaller sized room, off to rear of the bar area. It was a comfortable space, nicely decorated and could be anyone's chic living room. There were sofas, lounge chairs and art on the wall for purchase. A DJ kept the vibe fun and hip, spinning on the 1's and 2's. Up to now, we were all having a great time. The music was good, the scenery was lovely and our ciders were delicious. * Rose * Gravenstein Cider * Full order shucked oysters My friend, the same one that was invited to the party saw the owner pop a bottle of champagne in the cooler next to the DJ station. She asked if that was for everyone or certain people. He told her no it's for the room. She poured herself a splash and informed us. I walked over, opened the cooler, grabbed the bottle then hear the words "just a little". I turned to see a woman in a pretty all black jump-suit with dark hair. I was a little taken a back but said Hi, my friend said that We could have some. Her: "yes, but were having a little gather for friends, so don't pour a lot." I feel that I need to give you all the full perspective. My friend and I were the only African-American people in that room if not on the property. I was also sole person she cared to come up to say anything to, that I saw. At this very moment I made a conscious decision to keep it cool. Even though a volcano was bubbling inside. I didn't want to ruin the evening with my friends on some racists shit. So I walked over to who I though was the owner, he was busy speaking with other gusts. So I spoke with one of the bartenders. I asked about the female owner and if she were in the building. She said she didn't know. When I told her what happened, she apologized that I had a poor experience but took no action. She did not recommend that I speak with the male owner who was on site or provide any recourse for me to follow up. Instead, I had to ask for contact information (she did not offer) of the owners. I came home and researched the owners. Sure enough, the woman who basically made me feel unwelcome is the other half of the business. CALL BACK - Sunday morning Suzanne called me back this morning. I explained how her actions made me feel. At first she was a bit defensive explaining this or that and how much pressure she was under and saying that I wasn't the only person she spoke with or that some other guests were stealing peoples oysters. I paused. First, if this is too much pressure get out of the game. There were approximately 20 people in the room. When you handle 400, we can talk about pressure. I said "Suzanne, I need you to hear me, listen carefully. Had you come over and said "Hi, my name is Suzanne I am one of the owners here, welcome! We are having a bubble share, please help yourself to a small pour. We want to make sure everyone has some to enjoy. Also, there are cheeses and meats over here". Then I would have met the owner, felt welcomed and informed of the rules of the game. Instead of what felt more like a slap on the wrist for even considering grabbing the bottle! In the end she apologized. She also acknowledged the missed opportunity when her barmaid let me voice a complaint and leave the property even though BOTH owners were on site. That was an absolute fail. So after a horrible customer experience why would I give 2 stars? 1 because the place is really dope! I loved the outdoor space, I love ciders and I love oysters. The experience was great until that interaction with Suzanne. The second star is because Suzanne did follow up promptly and acknowledged her actions and those of her staff. She did apologize. This is the best winery! Everything from the wine, the people, the decor, to even this amazing AirBnB they have to rent right on their property. It is all 5 stars! We found this place by total accident. We were headed to the Russian River to do some camping and we noted that this place looked really cute. Fast forward to day 4 of camping, I needed to get away from all the bugs and dirt and decided to check Horse and Plow out...best decision ever! We walk in, totally dirty and not winery appropriate and we are greeted Will. He was so laid back and welcoming that I almost forgot that I was completely unshowered and smelly. Some wineries are be very snobby in this area and Will clearly made it known that they were not one of them. We spent a solid two hours there on our first visit. Will was just so nice, showing us their garden, their AirBnB and of course, letting us taste their wines. Horse and Plow actually offers ciders, white wine and reds but we are a solely red type of couple and will graciously poured us a sample of basically everything they had to offer. The wines were so full of body and depth. Our favorites were the Wabi Sabi and the Cab Franc. At this point in life, we were not wine club members anywhere but we joined this winery on the spot. I am very happy to say that Horse and Plow was my first wine membership (first of many to come shortly afterwards ... thanks Horse and Plow for starting a new addiction. Haha) We just loved everything about Horse and Plow so much, that we booked out on that day to come back to stay in their AirBnB. When we came back for our stay, we got more of the same amazing service. The AirBnB itself is beautiful. Well I guess the whole winery is beautiful. It is an old barn recently remodeled to be a winery. Everything is so new and shiny. The room sits on top of the tasting room and there is a deck so you can sit out and overlook the winery and you can see the neighbor's pigs, billy goat and adorable dog. It is so peaceful. It is like a little oasis away from my normally busy South Bay life. There is a cute fireplace and the room Was loaded with a bottle of wine and a cider. During this stay, we met Luci, another one of the employees at Horse and Plow. She was again very welcoming and served us lots of good wines. I am a vegan and she spent a good chunk of time recommending vegan food locally as well as in Austin for an upcoming trip. We even bonded over my love and her daughters love of unicorns. Anyone who can talk vegan and unicorns to me while serving me great wine is my BFF! Haha Since this stay, we have stayed at the AirBnB three times. Horse and Plow is beginning to feel like family to me... a family who just so happens to make incredible wine. Will has continued to be so amazing to us, hugging us every time we go in and dealing with our, at times, overzealous joy to be there! We have bought so many shirts, sweatshirts and hats there because not only do we want to show our love but also they must have an artist working for them because all of their clothing is so cool and comfy... especially the shirts with unicorns on them! So yea, you can say I drank the Horse and Plow Kool-aid (or wine?). I love EVERYTHING about Horse and Plow and I suggest you get your butt over there and try one of everything! read more

Such a refreshing change from the other local wineries....if you are looking for pompous, egomaniacs, that just want to be seen.... this is not your place....if you want to chill with a bottle of cider or wine under a massive oak tree, with a gentle breeze, and some local musicians....bingo, this is the spot...the staff are friendly, wholesome, down to earth locals who genuinely enjoy their work...I love the Horse and Plow.. read more

Meh. Not here or there. Wines are average, but I think I'll be more excited with the Carignan and Rose come out soon. They did have a neat Pinot Gris with a good amount of flavor and body. Go for the cider tasting - definitely a fun and unique experience in the area! read more

A funky little tasting bar/farm in sebastopol. They have a cool farm/garden/picnic area attached to their tasting room. I didn't really know what to expect. They have a number of ciders on tap and a few wines. I found the ciders to be interesting, some are a bit funky, which they tell you, but overall they are refreshing. The seating is open seating, they have a bar and then a number of outdoor spots. It is a very relaxed environment, also good if you bring the kids along. Just outside of the seating area they have a garden and a chicken coop, which is fun to go look at for the city slickers. The tree house looks awesome, but unfortunately is roped off, probably for liability reasons. We enjoyed our little stay here, mostly for the setting, but would try it again for the wine and cider and see if there are a few more we enjoy. read more
