Probably the best school in the district when I went in 2015. I was well supported and treated fairly. The worst thing was the bathroom had no toilet paper once. There is a weird basement to this school. Allegedly it's haunted. I'll never know for sure, I didn't go in there. read more

If you are looking for a supportive and fair school environment, this may not be the right fit. While there are a few exceptions, my experience with specific teachers for both of my children was incredibly frustrating.Both of my kids were high-achieving GATE students, yet their grades dropped significantly upon enrolling at Dwyer. For example, one teacher gave my daughter an 89.9% in a class and rounded it down to a "B," dropping her GPA from a 3.8 to a 3.6.Additionally, the school's handling of citizenship grades and disciplinary rules felt targeted. My daughter, who maintained a 4.0, received an "N" in citizenship--disqualifying her from honors recognition--on the exact same day her teacher chased her down the hall for dress coding, despite other students wearing the same outfit without issue.When we transferred my son to another school, he immediately returned to earning "A's" in harder classes. Unfortunately, attempts to resolve these issues with the principal and the school board were met with indifference, and I know many other families with similar experiences. It appears this school environment only works well if parents are heavily involved in volunteering, staff gifting, and willing to accept unfair treatment without pushing back, as teachers may take frustrations out on the students. read more

You only get respect from staff if you're part of the PTA, give all teachers gifts, bring food for everyone in class, and don't bother them much. They give too much hw and my kids work all night. Really horrible kids here, the staff doesn't give af about what these kids do in the bathrooms (vape) you get caught? oh well. you get it taken and your parent retrieves it all teachers suck. move your kids to private school if you can. read more

I'm only in 7th grade and I hate Dwyer. First, the staff is unfriendly, second the teachers hardly grade your work correctly. One good thing I like about the school is that it is nice and big and has 2 fields. read more

I was shocked when I saw the reviews for Dwyer. I have an 8th grader and a 6th grader at Dwyer. My experience here has been nothing but great! Love the principal and most of the teachers my kids have had have been super. Please utilize the app canvas to keep up to date on grades and missing assignments. You are in charge of your kid and their academic achievements. Don't blame the teachers. Both my kids just got distinguished/honor roll. They are happy here and I'm glad this is our home school. read more

This school sucks, ive been here 6 months and i hate it here. The teachers only care about grades and they only give us 8 mins to change in pe, the kids are rude and shove random in the hallways. the schools big but it takes more than 4 mins to get across the whole school, the lunch isn't good as they say it is (expect for the pizza) and they expect us to be quiet when there's around 200 people in the cafeteria. If you had an older sibling at this school you'll get targeted/bad reputation by the teachers and staff. The only one good thing about Dwyer is that it's close to the beach. read more

Not a fan of this school. Had 2 kids go through there and if you can afford to send your kid to a private school I'd suggest that. Both kids were straight A students in gate classes. During time at Dwyer both of the kids grades suffered but my issue was with when one of them was really struggling we never heard a word from the teachers. We would ask about assignments and most would get back days or weeks later. To me they just don't care at all unless your the top 10% with a helicopter mom working pta at the school full time. Most are hoping to go back to Covid stay home times. Oh but he did learn how and where to get an abortion and how to put on condoms and birth control. Oh joy. If your curious about the Rif Raf that is a real thing. If your kids mobbing around downtown Hb after school chances are he's getting in it. read more

This school is extremely mid. I get shoved during passing period by eighth grade boys everyday. The only thing good about the school is that it's down the street from the beach and it's down the street from Seacliff which has McDonald's & Starbucks. Usually the food sucks but I ate last like the What a lotta pizza and pull apart cheesey bread. I get a lot of homework and every night I spend about 1.5-2 hours on homework which is ridiculous. Anyway....i guess its a kind of good school bc i like most of my teachers like my show choir teacher, science teacher , and dance pe teacher. read more

I really like this school. We came from Hi, and my kids love Dwyer. Yes its a laid back atmosphere, but who wants to be uptight. Hawaii middle schools are a nightmare with overcrowding and the education is seriously lacking. My kids would come home everyday and complain. I have yet to get a complaint from them about this school, and the families are quality. read more

I have one son grown and college bound who spent his middle school years at Dwyer and Twins in their last year of middle school at Dwyer. One is in general population and one has special needs so I am familiar with the past and present principals. Both Mr Smith and Mr Platt were/are involved and knowledgeable about the kids in their care. It's refreshing. I always feels like my needs and requests are acknowledged and addressed. Mr Platt is so kind and caring, you couldn't ask for more. Mrs Skouson is the person you reach in the office and she is personable and knowledgeable and just kind. No matter the situation she sees it through with a smile in her voice. Having a child with special needs gives me a clear view of the inner workings of the school and it is exemplary! I see the time and care put into planning for the needs of the kids. The curriculum is veered toward each child's needs. I have kids with very different needs and I see the staff try to accommodate both as individuals. I am grateful to have had my kids in this school. If you happen to be in the schools district, take the time to really appreciate how lucky you are, because I have heard horror story's from families in other districts and am SO GRATEFUL I have no horror stories of my own. I'd be remiss if I did not mention Ms Sarah Hovenden, one of the Special Ed teachers. Her involvement, flexibility and patience with her kids shows in her ability to keep a calm pleasant environment for the neediest children. She is a Godsend! read more

Throughout my 3 years at Dwyer, all I have to say is, that it is standard and nothing special. Occasionally you get a good teacher, who is pretty cool. The school is a good size, but is a California Public school which means it's probably underfunded. Also the school ran out of paper last year for a while. How do you run out of paper at a school?! If you have a well rounded child that's smart, but also likes to be involved in sports, music and after school activities, this is the right school for you! Their honors wall features a lot of kids, and they have pretty rigorous 3.8 GPA and above requirement. But, also healthy competitive spirit in the various after school sports they offer, great APA program, they are forming a cheerleading squad this year too, and one of the best music programs in Orange County!Teachers are very helpful and make sure every child achieves their full potential. Almost all the teachers in this school year of Dwyer don't care about the kids and they don't even help the kids out. Kids have sent thousands of loop-mails to the teachers and about 200 are probably responded to and the only way to get the teachers attention is to talk in person, and even then they might not listen. Some kid scratched my phone last year and no it wasn't an accident. He took it out of my backpack and used a metal file and scratched up my screen. What happened after that? I went to the vice principal's office and he said they would have a meeting with the parents and nothing ever happened. Not to mention about how racist that vice principal is. He does backpack searches to Latino and black kids all the time and almost never to any white kids. He never finds anything inside of the bags and does the same thing to the same kids everyday. This school needs to improve and make it better for the future generations of kids. read more
