MY 1000th REVIEW…read more.. As a Yelp review milestone, this morning I wanted to pick a mom & pop local food joint with at least 500 plus reviews and above a 4 star yelp rating. Well, I found one..."About Time Cafe" located on West Oakland Park Blvd. No outside patio but had a large seating area, cafeteria style, with four tables currently occupied with customers. This super bubbly waitress, Tabby, greeted me and told me I could sit anywhere in the gently outdated restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch comfort food. The menu items looked impressive with many interesting dishes ranging between $10 - $14. The "Eggs Your Way" for $10.49 was my choice with two eggs over medium, bacon, potatoes and whole wheat toast. My order was ready within ten minutes. Prepared my toast with a heavy coating of raspberry jelly. The eggs were cooked perfectly, loved the onions mixed with the potatoes, although the bacon could have been crisper, next time will order it well done. The bathroom was simple with no exciting decor and needed some minor attention, although, suited its purpose. Tabby alerted me to some deep discounted weekly food specials as follows: Taco Tuesday 1/2 priced Waffle Wednesday 1/2 priced Thirsty Thursday 1/2 off Mimosas Weekend Brunch Bogo Mimosas The food was fantastic and the customer service was commendable. Easy 4 star rating for this relaxed comfort food restaurant. I will return for an omelette and recommend this restaurant to other hungry foodies.

It's in a small strip mall off Oakland Park Boulevard, west of Hiatus. There is lots of parking; the place is plain but clean and houses a large dining room. Hubby had the big breakfast (3 eggs, ham, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and 1/2 order of French toast) and I got the full French toast. The ham was skimpy and paper thin and looked like a piece of lunch meat sliced in two. There were 2 thin strips of bacon and 1 sausage. The hash browns were good but probably about tablespoons worth. The French toast boasted a house made strawberry sauce. We didn't see any. And, when I asked the server, she told me to lift the bread. There was a faint, red smear, and she said that was the strawberry sauce. Nevertheless, the French toast was to my liking, soaked in batter and cooked properly. It was a bit after 12 on a Sunday (after church) and the place was relatively busy with 8-10 tables filled at a time and 2 servers. Plus, one young man was cleaning tables and assisting the servers. We were fascinated watching him clear tables with multiple trips carrying the dirty items in his two hands (no tray!). We even placed bets on how many trips it would take to clear a table of four. (I won, 6 trips.) While the food was good, the items didn't fulfill the promises listed on the menu. Service was congenial as the two servers rushed about trying to get everything done in a timely fashion. Prices were reasonable. Breakfast for two with tax (and free coffee from our coupon) was $28.

I had to park in a garage and walk down a roadway with no sidewalks to get to the place after dropping my wife and daughter off. He greeted us at the beginning and informed us that it is a one-hour experience, but promised that the food comes quickly. And it did! We observed that the place was being run very efficiently with even the manager helping out from time to time. I had grits with cheese and fried catfish and scrambled eggs. Overall it was a delicious meal. The grits were hot, the catfish was very hot, but the scrambled eggs were just warm and parts were cool. My daughter enjoyed all of her meal. The biscuit and croissant we got at the beginning of the meal were phenomenal! When we were ready to pay the bill, our waitress read out each charge we incurred on her little hand-held billing device, which we thought was very nice. She then informed us that a 20% charge was added to our bill, and went on to explain that that is for all the staff, not just her. She said that I will have an opportunity to give her even more "tip" on the next screen as she held the device in her hand waiting for me to select an additional tip for her. I told her that I felt very pressured into giving her more money (with her standing over me watching). She still stood there showing me the screen where I am now prompted to give additional tip of 18% and HIGHER on my bill that was $110 of which 20% was already taken out as a surcharge. I felt pressured and uncomfortable. I am used to restaurants automatically charging a high gratuity for large parties, but not for two people sitting on stools (no table). I passed the machine to my daughter who unhesitatingly selected No Tip. The 20% we already paid is enough; and they may continue to call it what they may. The waitress then turned and hurried away like we now had no value. No nice parting words or anything. That experience tainted the beautiful experience we first had.
