This is an authentic, cash only, Amish grocery store. Go if you want to experience how the people that live here shop. They sell milled flour and primary ingredients for making your own stuff. I found it interesting how many different types of flour, spices, and primary ingredients like borax used for cleaning laundry and disinfecting were available for purchase by the pound. I was able to buy homemade black licorice for $3. Homemade canned strawberry rhubarb butter to spread on toast for $4-5. They also have a huge discount section and the kids loved stretching their $5 budget and got a bunch of Halloween and Christmas specific candy cheaply for no other reason than it being the wrong holiday. My husband bought some Amish sourdough bread, but was disappointed with the taste. Upon looking at the label I noted there were a lot of ingredients. Just something to note. Not all Amish foods are created equal and not all items are organic or without preservatives. Read your labels, make educated choices and admire a store of thrifty, honest, and hardworking folks. read more

I came in with a friend while visiting in town. What a great find. This is a no frills, well laid out, great place to shop. So much variety and lots of fresh food. I loved the aisles with products deeply discounted because they were nearing the expiration date. But you can definitely use most items well past those dates. The employees were very efficient. I have yet to find a market I wouldn't recommend in this area. Food is always filling, service and ambience are as expected.

This is actually a review of the Bulk Food store. Number one thing to remember, bring cash or write a check. 2 it's no frills. But has lots of stuff that is hard to find. I didn't buy a lot today but I got the butter extract I needed for a recipe some kamut wheat berries and for heavens sake pick up egg noodles when you go. Need 25 pounds of beans? They got it. Need 2 pounds of brown rice? They got that too. Coffee, cereal, flour they have it and many to choose from. Cheese and meat are relatively new items they offer. I didn't take photos out of deference to the Amish that work there. Give yourself time when you go. And remember they are always closed on Sunday. read more

This place is worth visiting - especially when you are all the way out here in Amish country. Getting to Shipshewana takes some time because you are more than halfway across the state of Indiana and just under the border with Michigan ... it's about 130 miles from Chicago, so figure two hours. But that said, it was worth the drive. We have been to Shipshewana many times in the past visiting the stores and going to auctions, but this time was different. With Covid-19 seemingly emptying out local stores, we thought we'd take a drive and check out E&S. Glad we did...'nuff said. Now a couple things to remember - one is they do not take credit ... you either pay in cash or write them a check; second is that you have to watch dates ... I don't mean items are out of date but that some are close, so watch your dates. E&S has a surprising selection of food items. It is a typical grocery store and has a wide variety of both canned stuff and fresh. It is huge, with wide aisles and loads of bulk products for those that like to shop that way - like 50 pounds of potatoes or 50 pounds of flour. Prices are very very nice here ... they are competitive with your local store and will usually beat the price. You'll notice from the license plates in the parking lot that people come from all around. People come here for a reason - give it a try. Recommended. read more

You've got to see the reduced price aisle - seriously amazing deals! And don't forget to stop by the back left corner of the store for superb deals on refrigerated and frozen goods! But for visitors, they also have an atm in the lobby area to get cash because they don't do credit cards. We have been to this store before but, never had enough time to go through and see everything. We also have never eaten at the sandwich bar. So today we made sure we had enough time to take it all in. We started out at the Sandwich Bar. The young lady behind the counter will make your sandwich almost anyway you like it. They offer a variety of different compliments with your sandwich. I ordered the Combo which is a sandwich, soup and a drink. All for a bargain price of $6.99. You pick your bread, 3 different meats and a cheese. Then you can add all the extras, tomato, onion, pepper, etc. The finished product is huge. I took the Corn Chowder Soup. It was amazing as it was thick and creamy with shredded ham and chicken. My wife got the combo with Potato Salad. Delicious shredded potato in a sauce. The drinks are you choice of about 6 different fountain drinks. After all that if you have any room there is ice cream. The grocery store is a rare experience. There are aisles of almost every kind of food you can imagine. Hundreds of bulk items and a full aisle of items that are reduced because they are discontinued or going out of date. When you finish go next door to the outdoor garden area. If you are planning a visit plan plenty of time to enjoy. Only open till 4:00 on Sat. and closed on Sunday. read more

Traveling to Shipshewana for a July 6, weekend picnic at my brothers house. Needed to find a store with ground beef and brats, and buns. I used yelp and found E & S. The place was awesome. I loved the wide isles. You can buy in bulk. Prices were shocking compared to what I pay for the same things in Indianapolis. Example: I keep stocked up at least 4-5 boxes of simple Kraft, MAC &Cheese. In Indianapolis, at Kroger, I recently paid 1.00 + for one box. I remember thinking, what happened to buying those for .25 a box? Yes, inflation has happened but that's a terrible price for such a simple food item. Well, to my surprise, E&S was selling boxes for .39! I also bought a 24 pack of my favorite flavored Vitamin Water for 6.99. Those are 1+ in a gas station or close to that at the grocery stores. I won't get into a Yelp debate the way I got into a real debate about whether E & S Sales is an Amish business (I say it's more Mennonite than Amish just because of the grossly "English"--the Amish word for non-Amish--way things are packaged and marketed). I'll also admit the coffee and raisin prices surprised me in an Amish-equivalent-of-the-sticker shock kind of way. They have a lot of things, including tons and tons and tons and tons of really cool model tractors. The cheese is delicious. I was going to get to try the peach jam, but my mom accidentally packed the jar in her carry-on, and TSA wouldn't let her take it through, so it's living in a landfill somewhere in or near Chicago right now. They have more varieties of popping-corn kernels than MAC has nail-polish colors. You think I'm exaggerating, but I'm not. Bring plenty of cash, and stock up on Halloween candy no matter what time of year you visit. read more

Cool grocery store with a lot of products being sold in "bulk". It's not like Costco or Sams Club bulk though. It's a lot of farm grown or home made products that are bagged and weighed and priced by the weight. They sell everything though, they even have a small book area. Finally went there in person. (If you have friends going there from Indy, give them your shopping list and money! They don't take credit cards. Excellent prices on produce. Also has an excellent kitchen that will cook/assemble food to order for carry-out or dine in. There are a few dining tables inside. Personal pizzas and salads are EXCELLENT. They are also famous for "re-packs." That's where they take a 50 pound bulk bag of something, and repack it in 1/2, 1, 2, 5, or 10 pound bags, or plastic deli containers. Spices, seasonings, mixes, flavoring, flour, etc. The spices are also crazy cheap. If you cook, you must browse that aisle. ALL the things are here. Like 30 types of flour: Red Winter, Red Spring, White Spring, Spelt, pastry, All Purpose, Bread, potato flour, potato starch, corn flour, corn starch, corn meal, tapioca flour, white rice flour, sweet rice flour, brown rice flour, wheat germ, wheat gluten, wheat bran, pancake mix, cookie mix, pizza crust mix, waffle mix, etc., etc., etc. At prices that are crazy low (because they repack from the bulk bags.) Oh, the candy aisle! STAY OUT OF THE CANDY/SUGAR AISLE if you are diabetic or on a diet or a choco-holic! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! You will SWOON, if you don't first go into diabetic coma just looking at the delectable stuff. The stuff like candied fruit, papaya, mango, etc., made my mouth water. The temptation of sweetness matched with ridiculously low prices was hard to resist. The only draw-back was that the re-packs don't have expire or BB dates on their labels. Some, but not all, have the instructions that usually come with retail packages. Though all the re-packs DO have product names and ingredient lists, they mostly lack the Nutrition Info data box. So you (mostly) miss out on the calorie counts and sodium info. Allow about two hours to go through this store. Not kidding. read more

This is a huge and great store full of tasty food, good prices and bargains. It is very crowded with customers. I spent over an hour filling my cart with over $100 in goods. Then I got to the register, where there was the first sign of "NO CREDIT CARDS". How embarrassing! I only had $54 in cash and left half the goods I'd have bought, in the aisle. Customers deserve earlier notification of the policy. Their right not to use cards but save us the time and energy in advance. I can't weight it any more stores because of this. After visiting my cousin in West Central Illinois and going to this little store on some farmland know as the Amish store I had to go in search of something similar but closer to my hometown. I originally went on the hunt to find Cheddar cheese powder that I had bought at the first mentioned store. A friends mom then mentioned E&S Sales. This store is a bulk food haven. Walking down the isles I found the Cheddar cheese powder I was looking for but found so much more as well. Bulk banana chips, goji berries, egg noodles, chicken soup base, rice, gelatin, cereal, dehydrated Lucky Charms Marshmallows and spices galore. I bought pumpkin pie spice, oregano, Italian seasoning, dried onion, dried garlic and much more. When you walk in the store there is an Amish man to greet you and hand you a cart. when you checkout they bag your items and without even asking the young Amish boy is carrying my purchases to my car. I had to tip him or my conscious would have had a field day. This is my new favorite place to visit when in Indiana. Cheap, Friendly and Bulk! These are a few of my Favorite things! read more

We go here whenever we get the chance. I'm not exaggerating...they have 20 different flours and almost as many different kinds of sugar. I can't live without my New Rinkle bread flour. It is grown and milled just one town away at Howe. They also sell SAF Instant Yeast in .5 kilo bags for the best price I have ever seen. In the summer try to shop on Wednesday -- you can go to the flea market, walk around until you are ready to drop, stop for lunch at the Auction restaurant (don't pass up the pie) and then shop at E&S refreshed! They don't take credit cards -- at least I don't think they do -- but they have always taken my check. When you park, make sure you don't park in spaces designed for horses and buggies. read more

First time at this store and I was mesmerized. There is such a huge selection of everything. For a split moment You don't where to begin. We started off at the ice cream counter and deli. The ice cream was hard and creamy. Perfect treat and the deli can make sandwiches salads and sliced meats and cheese. We wrapped ourselves up and down each isle looking and reading at everything. They have anything you can imagine from Amish made products to fresh veggies. They have a great cheese to taste, fresh and frozen meats back in the dairy isles. Staff isn't the friendliest if you're needing help while looking for something in the isle. Checking out they were friends. They only accept cash which can put a damper on things but made me just purchase less. read more

This is probably one of my favorite bulk stores ever. We drive 4 times a year to stock up. That's a 3 hour's drive each way, per trip. We stop many other places as well. They are the primary reason we go most all the time. Remember they are cash and check only to keep there prices down. They have a ATM on site. I love bulk stores. Why pay for fancy packaging when the most important thing is the contents? Everything is prepackaged at E&S, so there is no weighing it out yourself. But they're packaged in useful sizes. Need 50 pounds of flour? They have that, too. Besides flour, sugar and spices, they have "just add water" baking mixes. I had to get a bag of "micro mini marshmallows" for making s'mores cookies. I thought they'd be even more fun than the regular mini marshmallows. Of course, all kinds of noodles. I like the really skinny ones for chicken soup. They have soup mixes and dip mixes. Snacks and candy. Jams, jellies & salsa. Popcorn. Several varieties. I got some specially bred to pop up extra large, for caramel corn. You can pay with cash or check, but they don't take credit cards. If your stuff is too heavy for you to carry, a nice young man will take it out to your car for you, on a sturdy dolly. Some people pull up their cars to the front of the store, so don't try to circle the parking lot by going across the front of the store - too much traffic right in front of the doors. There is a bench where you can wait in the shade for the rest of your party to emerge from the store. read more

Shipshewana is getting a bit touristy for me, but E&S retains the great prices and selection for which I love Amish bulk food stores. My heart still prefers the quiet, and quaintness of "off the beaten path" of Miller Discount Groceries (Centreville, Michigan) but E & S sales also has a great selection (probably a bit better for cheeses, ready to eat product and food mixes). The prices for cheeses are usually lower than at the actual local cheese factories. For people that actually still know how to cook at home, these Amish bulk stores are wonderful. Whatever your reason for visiting an Amish area, please respect the Amish, they aren't "Cast members" like Disneyland, they are honest, devout, hard working people. Don't plan a shopping trip on Sunday, almost all businesses are closed in Amish areas on Sunday. read more

The isles and isles of bulk packages can not be compared to any others I have ever seen. FRESH Meats and Cheeses - Excellent and Samples galore. SERIOUS size packages if you choose to freeze or share. Bulk Candies, spices, baking goods, pans, flours, sugars, jams, jellies, mini marshmallows, dry fruits, you name it, it is here. Toilet paper, paper towels, plates, cups, etc. Prices --- I thought I was at a 90% off sale ! I think these are 1960's prices and could not believe my eyes when I checked out. Went back 3 more times to mail boxes to other family members. Don't miss this shopping experience if you are on vacation or driving through Shipshewana.This store on its own should be a vacation destination if you are a foodie or just love to buy great bulk food at great prices. While I still enjoy going into this grocery store, It was a whole look cooler when they had the open flame gas burner lights that extended from the ceilings throughout the store. The hiss and warmth that emanated from them reminded one of a time gone past. But, all things must pass, and I am figuring the fire marshall had a hissy fit every time he came into the building. The thing I most like about this store is that they have things here grown by Amish, made by Amish, sold by Amish, sold to Amish, made for Amish, and then consumed by Amish. They just happen to let us English folk in also. I am guessing if they could, they would charge us more...but then again, maybe they do...since they do speak to each other in their own language, and who knows what they are saying behind my back right in front of me. read more

We really enjoyed our stop at this fun store! Because we were here the day after Thanksgiving, it was very busy, but the shelves were still kept well-stocked and the store was clean. Not everything here was a deal, but if you know your grocery game there are definitely some good deals to be had, especially if you buy in bulk. Everything the other reviewers have said about the variety and prices in this store are true. That said, when I was in Shipshewana for the quilt festival a few weeks ago, I bought a lot of goodies at E&S, put the bags in the car and didn't pull them out again until I got home (WI) a few days later. I was disappointed to find that the five bars of homemade soap I'd bought were not in my bags. I wrote to E&S and within a week I received a check reimbursing me and a letter of apology. While this place is great for getting mass quantities of things at wholesale like prices, they don't seem to have the selection they used to (or so my husband says). Overall I liked going there and checking out all of the great deals and picking up some food for the week. We mostly use this place to get packaging and supplies but I got to look around and get some stuff for personal use this time. We ended up getting a good deal on fresh moral mushrooms for a friend at a steal of a deal. Everyone went home happy. My only suggestion for this place is that they make sure their prices are indeed actually lower than grocery stores. A few things I saw we're actually more expensive than Meijer or Walmart prices. read more
