Last Friday a co-worker and I were in Salinas on a job. We decided to go over to the Safeway deli…read moreand pick up some tenders and nuggets for lunch. About once a month we choose the Safeway deli in whatever town we are in. Have never had a problem. That night I started having diarrhea. I went to sleep and woke up feeling even more nauseated. I ended up running into the bathroom and vomiting. The next day I was wrecked. Sunday still didn't feel well. Went to work today (Monday) body felt better but stomach was still not right. Talked to my co-worker and he to got sick. That pretty much assured me that I (we) got some bad chicken. I do want to add this as well. I am a former Chef and as I was standing in line I did notice some not so great food handling. Mainly what I noticed was the cashier was working with food then touching the register back n forth. I know they have a lot of turnover at lunch but that's no excuse to serve food in that way. My whole weekend was ruined and I still don't feel well. I should have listened to my gut when I saw how the food was being handled. Word to the wise. Trust your gut! So you don't throw up your gut.

Meat department customer service was a 10! I regularly shop…read morehere and have enjoyed my interactions with the regular staff members. They have all been helpful and welcoming. The new staff, Dave, in the meat department, has helped me a few times now and his customer service is always excellent. He's quick to check in with his customers, greets everyone and takes a lot of pride in what he's doing. Great addition and a fresh face. I'll keep waiting in line for him if he's busy.

The next day, I had to go to the bank, so I decided to go and see if they had stocked any more of it, which they had. When I got to the checkout, I was charged full price. I asked why I wasn't getting the digital price and was told that it could only be used once. I asked to see the policy that stated that because there is nothing in their weekly ad that states that. Of course she couldn't. I also bought Yoplait yogurt which was on sale for 39 cents if you buy at least 10. I bought 12 but was charged full price for two of them. Again, I asked why I was being charged full price for two of them and was told there is a limit of 10 at the sale price, although there is no sign that says that. So, I didn't buy the ice cream or the two additional yogurts. Although we live about a mile from Safeway, we drive to South Salinas to do our major grocery shopping because Safeway is so poorly run. Not only do you have to load your groceries on the conveyor belt, most of the time you have to bag them as well. At Nob Hill, they do everything for you. In fact, they'll even take them to your car for you. I consider Safeway like a 7-11, just to get no more than a few items when we run out before we go shopping again.

They always have what we're looking for with very reasonable prices. From packages food, to fresh produce, to paper goods. This S&F has always served us well. I will say staff can sometimes be hard to find outside of the checkout area. So if you are having some trouble finding an item, you might be on your own. But when you do interact with staff, they are friendly and helpful. I just wish there were more of them working the aisles. Parking lot is a bit iffy. It's busy and people often park really poorly either taking up 2 spots or parking so off to the side that you'll have trouble getting in/out of your car. But honestly, this Smart & Final is a great resource for your bulk item needs. Especially if you come early in the morning. You can often easily get in, grab everything you need, and get out much quicker than you could at other bulk item stores (you know what one I'm talking about). That convenience is enough to make me a repeat customer.
