Stopped in for lunch and had some of the best Chile Verde I've ever had. I asked what they were known for and Chile Verde is what was mentioned. I opted for a Chile Verde quesadilla and was served enough food for three people. So, per meal, the price was right (about $6 per meal). Service was very friendly. The restaurant is partly store, partly restaurant, with a cute historical ambiance. There are a lot of articles and artifacts pertaining to local history on the walls for your perusal. Paicines (pronounced pie-SEE-nus) is named after the original residents of the area prior to the European invasion. Highly recommend a stop at the general store. Free parking in front. read more

I have moved away to Easy Coast but lived in Hollister and Santa Cruz for years. The food at sleepy Paicines was one of my favorites things on trips down along Airline Highway into old San Benito or further to Coalings or Pinnacles National Monument. And Chili Colorado like no other. And increasingly harder to find. The building and the relics on the walls in the big hall in the rear speak of parties and weddings from long ago. And the name "Paicines" originates in the Spanish adaptation of the name of the Paksin tribe native to that wonderful valley lush with oaks and acorns and fame and the river that even had salmon runs long ago. read more

Pretty disappointing. A local said to get the enchiladas. As shown in the photo, the cheese wasn't even melted. Who wants unmelted grated cheese in & on enchiladas? The gooey-ness is part of the experience. The serving temperature was below lukewarm. The red sauce was good & it did have a kick, but it didn't compensate for the temperature that it was served at. It seems like she completely forgot to heat it up! My plate just had rice while my S.O. had both beans & rice. The rice was extremely bland. We put all of the salsa on it. The chili verde plate was served the proper temperature. It had good flavor although it probably the wateriest gravy that I've ever had. I wish that we had waited & gone somewhere in Hollister. The good- it's a grocery so you can buy beer & drink it with your meal. read more

This place may be a bit off the beaten path but when I lived in Salinas it was a fun place to go eat Just getting there was half the fun. Upon my arrival I was always greeted by a friendly staff member. Thr Mexican food is always served up hot and delicious. We stopped through and picked up all kinds of snack stuff for a quick picnic in the hills! This was a fun little quaint store. You can feel the history of the area running through the energy of the people and the place. Clearly a long-lived haunt of eras gone by. It felt like a fun blend of days of long ago and snack items of today. I kept expecting some cowboys to come riding up on their horses and come in to grab a quick beer! A historical place! Just talking to the owners they will definitely let you in on a bit of history with this location. As for the food, they sell salsas and burritos! Delicious! Full selection of beer in coolers and other snacks you can grab and go. It's conveniently located on the 25 as a last stop to Pinnacles or a quick stop leaving Thousand Trails San Benito. Hollister is about 20 minutes from this location but if you go down Panoche Road you can stop at the Panoche Inn (small bar) or even take a dip in the Hot Springs! read more

I was really looking forward to our visit, based on previous reviews, but maybe we came on an off day. They stopped cooking food at 2 on a Saturday; we arrived around 2:30. Picked up pre-made carne asada and Chile verde burritos. Burritos were primarily rice and bean, with a hunk or two of meat. No cheese, no sauce, no sour cream, nothing else. It wasn't really possible to tell the burritos apart. They gave us a small container of hot sauce but the cap came off the container and spilled in the bag. Pricey. Definitely not worth the expense. read more

Driving back from hiking the High Peaks Trail at Pinnacles National Park (which I also realy enjoyed) I wizzed past this general store only to turn around 110 yards down the road when curiosity got the best of me. Don't let a grubby exterior and an unsavory type or two who linger around the place scare you away. Two things you must try: The homemade salsa sold in a mason jar -its excellent! Their house made burritos, the chile verde also A+. I had a hunch it was gonna be a diamond in the rough, and it was!..The guy who works the register SUPER nice, he'll heat up a burrito for you to eat as you take off back down the highway headed home. The friendliest roadside stop on our bike ride to the Pinnacles! Six sweaty bikers were all welcomed, happy to use the restroom and buy some snacks and refreshments, just wishing we were in town when this place really gets down - I bet it's a great party when the town turns out. Okay, I live about 20 miles from the store, it is the first available place on my way to Hollister, BUT... they have the best ICE around... the burritos and Mexican food here is really really first rate, pretty good beer selection and really really nice folks. when you visit this place you may wonder why I gave it 5 stars. well the answer is that it is as good as it gets for many, many, miles in EVERY direction. It is a nice clean little country store, with a restaurant in the middle (restaurant only open till 2 pm), and a bar in the back. when nature calls, this is the only place to stop (other than the roadside), so I suggest you do stop! Use the facilities and have a snack. The staff is wonderfully friendly and knowledgeable about the roads. The drive up or down highway 25 is fabulous! read more

We found out this building is over 100 years old!! We stopped here because we had to pee and we knew we were gonna be way out in the sticks, soon after (we were headed home after coming in that way)..... The place looked tiny from the outside, but it was huge inside!! (Like seriously, it was like that Harry Potter tent!)....the guy working there was incredibly nice and super informative! The building is over 100 years old and used to be a hotel....100 years ago a desperado killed 3 people there and then hid in the hills of New Idira (sp?)....such history! Private, romantic, salsa is great, people are friendly. Nice ride out to the store, romantically secluded. Favorite place for Saturday morning breakfast. Huevos rancheros is my favorite choice for breakfast, while dining on the front patio enjoying the views. Great way to start the weekend.
