I used to love this Deli. It is close to university and after class I would always walk over to grab a sandwich. Their sandwiches are HUGE and delicious. You totally get all that you pay for. The sandwiches are good, but this place is all about the side orders. Although my supervisor calls it a liquor store, E-Z Stop truly is a deli. How could it not be with diverse, delicious sides sold by the pint? It actually reminds me a lot of Rossi's Deli in the Castro in San Francisco, which I miss dearly because I don't work the overnight job from hell anymore. I guess I could still visit Rossi's--it's less than a mile from my house, and I take the 24 to Market Street once a week--but it just wouldn't be the same. See, before my job from hell was a job from hell, it was a job. At times, it was a challenging, interesting job. But because it began and ended so tragically, I usually forget all the good times in between and focus solely on the negative, which in the grand scheme of things was 7,374 times worse than the positive was positive. But there's something wonderful about delis owned by immigrants that have loyal followings. I know this is a review of E-Z Stop Deli, but it's getting its four stars, so it will have to deal with my meanderings. The tattooed woman who often works the register is a gem. She's sassy and no nonsense, and she reminds me of a server at The Lucky Penny on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco. I so miss The Lucky Penny. Lily treated me--and still treats me, on the rare occasions I visit now--just right, and even when I think of when the times started to get bad at my old job, I think of discussing Lily at length with Pablo, and I miss parts of 2007 and 2008. Oh, right, back to E-Z Stop Deli. It's quite a production they've got going. It also feels like one of those tweener convenience store/markets you used to find in foresty or lakey resort towns until people started building expensive condominiums in said resort towns. There's enough to fully stock up on everything, but why would anyone do all her grocery shopping at a deli on Shattuck Avenue in Downtown Berkeley? So E-Z Stop gets even more credit from me for having so much to offer. I won't ever have the opportunity to enjoy all of it, but I appreciate its generosity. Plus I won something like $4 back on the $10 worth of Super Lotto tickets I bought here. E-Z Stop Deli does have a dark side, however. The pickles are disgusting. I was excited to try one after hearing effusive praise from more than one source, but the pickle was soggy and old. I threw it away, and I almost never throw away food. read more

Man, E-Z liquors is so damn easy their store name is just two letters of the alphabet. It's like the owner said, "let's write out easy" and Mexican Jesus was like "No habla Engles" and so the owner was like, "I got you, I'll make it 'E-Z'". Then Mexican Jesus blacked out off a 5th of tequila and the owner thought "Damn, MexiCali Jesus fittin to be hungry when he wakes up, I should prepare him a sandwich.' And when TexMex Jesus woke up he was like "meh, yo quiero make own sandwich" and he did and then the owner decided it was a blessing that all this fantastic, illustrious, magical, unicornian philosophy happened to him, and modeled his store after the bombastically superb-premium moment. And I'm glad he did, because this stores got it like Lauryn Hills first solo album, like Will Smith in Independence Day, like a chemist in an intermediate chemistry class after he just took a better level chemistry class! this is really a dual review of the East Bay Express and E-Z Stop Deli. I have long suspected that their reviews are a result of places which advertise in their paper. An informal check found that almost each place which has a review, also has an ad in their paper....BUT, when they had a sandwich round-up review article, THAT caught my attention. OK, here I step in the tell the real truth. Went here today, OK, it is the 4th of July, I realize today isn't the day for the freshest bread so if the bread was disappointing, I would forgive. Placed my order, Red Flag one, walked right over to check the drink selection, within 20 seconds, heard the guy call me over "your sandwich is ready". ..WTF?, does this guy have octopuss arms? I moved to Berkeley about this time last year. After moving into my new apartment, I wanted to buy some celebratory beer, so I hit the streets in search of a liquor store or convenience store. Even though this place is five blocks away from me, it was the closest place with alcohol, so I went in. They had a decent selection of beers and wine for a convenience store, and they have a good amount of liquor at reasonable prices. However, I also noticed that lots of people were buying sandwiches. I was curious, so I decided to get one. First of all, they have fresh roasted turkey and chicken every day and both are very tasty. They have a wide selection of breads and their toppings are always fresh. The sandwiches are sizable too. No wonder so many people were buying them. The sandwiches taste amazing! Especially for the low price. All of the staff are very friendly too. Tip: If you are a student, show your ID and get $1 off your sandwich. Also, they have a frequent customer card, so if you buy nine sandwiches, you get one free. It's nice to have a place that meets both my vodka and sandwich needs. read more

This place was a microcosm of awesome. We had to wait a while for our sandwiches, so we stepped aside and just watched. The deli is located on Shattuck and so they have to deal with a wide variety of people, from students to the crazies to the transients, and we got a wonderful mix while we waited. Pretty much my usual place for a cheap, delicious sandwich. Honestly, I haven't bought any of their stocked products or produce from EZ Stop. I heard about their amazing sandwiches and thought I give them a try. I had the Hot Ham and Cheese (the special of the day) the first time and fell in love. At around $5, the sandwich was freshly prepared and quite large. Ever since then, I've been a frequent customer! They have other deli products as well - pasta, potato salads, chicken wings. WOW all I have to say is EZ Stop is one off my favorite places to stop by in Berkeley to grab any snack. They have cool drinks and juices, ramen, fruits like bananas and apples, rice crispy treats, brownies, fresh coffee, and FRIED CHICKEN??!! MAC AND CHEESE, mashed potatoes, potato wedges, BUFFALO CHICKEN WINGS, chicken tenders, 2 piece chicken + a side and buscuit for 3.99 GET OUT!! I mean honestly, nothing around the area compares when it comes to market/deli type stores. This is coming from someone who is native to the area! EZ stop has always been here to stay amongst all the shops that have came and went and I hope it holds up during this very tough time. Go check it out! These guys not only have good grub, but they always have a friendly banter going between themselves and never forget to put a smile on your face before leaving. My favorite is the roasted turkey-blt with avocado. It's best to be eaten right away because it's warm. Sometimes when I'm rushed I run into this place for a good quick lunch to take on BART. They also have a pretty good selection of other snacks and drinks to accompany your sandwich, but stick to the freshly made stuff versus the pre-made sandwiches available. Terrific place to buy cheap, unhealthy snacks. I usually manage to get a few bags of mini Hostess muffins/brownies each week. They're only 25 cents a bag! I can't help it. I can't even get a box at Target for less, though I suppose that's a good thing. They have $3.50 Sandwich Specials each day and Daily Soups too. Once, I ordered Vegetable Noodle Soup and got some unidentifiable stuff with no noodles. Not fun. Much of the real food is overpriced, I think. I've also tried pasta here...it was alright. It's a classic sandwich deli that's housed in a small grocery store. The people there are really helpful and friendly. I originally ordered the hot turkey, bacon and avocado sandwich with rye bread, but the person told me that the chicken would be fresher (since the turkey is the pre-sliced variety), so I got that instead along with provolone cheese. Mmm, it's a very good sandwich, and I liked the chicken, except there were a few ligaments there. Everything else was very good, and I really liked the bread, too. This place is The Bomb. Period. Get the oven-roasted turkey on light rye and some halva and enjoy your lunch on the planter just outside while a homeless person regales you with stories of the omnipresence of CIA spies. The Bad: they always run out of oven-roasted turkey by about 3 p.m. Also, it's not "Oven Roast Turkey," guys. That doesn't make any sense. Oven-Roasted Turkey, please. Also, they lie constantly about where their halva comes from; they have cooked up some sort of story about how a little old Lebanese lady in the North Bay makes it. Really, it just comes from Joyva in Brooklyn like so many other delis' halva. I love E-Z Stop! First of all, their sandwiches are generously portioned, always, especially for the price. They have a huge bread selection and a ton of sandwich options, even for a vegetarian. My personal favorite is the avocado & cheese sandwich, on dutch crunch, no tomatoes. I order it so often that every sandwich maker there has my order memorized. I've been going to E-Z Stop for almost 3 years now and I won't stop any time soon. There's no better deli sandwich to be found in all of Berkeley. The sandwiches are made right in front of you and the staff is skilled, so sandwiches only take a few minutes. E-Z stop is my go-to lunch place. Also, their convenience store stocks a lot of good snacks - stuff that Walgreens doesn't have. I always go there to get my movie candy and soda. They also have a wide chip selection and a pretty good refrigerated drinks section. Though the store is small physically, the space is laid out well and with delicious and relatively inexpensive treats. E-Z stop also serves coffee in the mornings. The staff is super friendly, whether it's your first time or your fiftieth time in there. I know some of the staff by name now, and in return they have my order memorized. I love E-Z stop and they will keep me coming back as long as they are open. read more

Found this place on yelp, then when I went to do review I read that students get $1 off. There is no seating. Went for the falafel around closing time -- 11:10 pmish. I couldn't find it on the menu but a few other yelpers mentioned it and when I asked they had it. The falafel itself was dry, not my aunties falafel but the sandwich was decent for the price. As for ambiance the rap music playing was too loud and the cashier, although friendly was slightly off the mark in terms of professionalism and admitted to being drunk. He did his job though and didn't make any mistakes and as another yelper described, the employees seem to enjoy themselves. They were closing, and they made the food quickly and I was out in less than 10. Will definitely be back. Next time i'll order something different though. read more

Now I see it's you. (Stares me in the eyes while I take back my ID) --is this debit? Me: No, credit. Him: You have a nice smile. (It takes several tries to run the card.) Him: You need a receipt? Me: No, thanks. Him: Yeah. (Pointedly, magnanimously) You're welcome. --Can you sign this one? Me: (signing the receipt) (I wait a few moments) (realize he's not giving me back my card) Can I have my card? Him: Oh, yes, of course. Microaggressions are often subject to reinterpretation and denial. But these were very clearly microaggressions. I just wanted wine. I did not want a drawn-out interaction and weird comments.
