I just picked an order up via the ToGoodToGo app and the soup they provided was completely rotten and had a 'best by' date of three days ago. They are supposed to give out extra food that is edible, not rotten like that. And if they don't have any old or excess, they are supposed to provide you with something fresh instead. Um wasn't my favorite place to eat. While I was waiting in line the cashier wasn't really paying attention to me and was putting away their tips Once she looked up I told her I was there for a pick up. This place seems like it has been around and it's nothing really special. Once you walk in, you order at the counter and wait. It's not fancy and not that many seats. I went during lunch so trying to get to this place on 4th street is a disaster.... I thought it was going to be a good place for a quick in and out. No parking at all which made me even more disappointed. I had a couple of slices of pizza. One was cheese slice, and the other pepperoni. It's a thin slice of pizza but it's a pretty good size, the sauce and cheese wasn't fantastic. To each their own. My friend ordered the beet salad and that was pretty tasty. This was a solid spot for lunch. I came here after the lunch rush though so not sure how busy it gets during prime time. There's a couple of small parking lots around if you want to get lucky and find a spot, otherwise there's street parking you have to pay for. It's mainly a to go spot with one standing table inside. The deli is pretty small but they have a pretty good wide menu of different sandwiches. They have some pastries on the side and salads and sodas to offer. I personally saw hotdogs and order that. I got their hot link and added chili to it. There's a lot of condiments they offer and make sure you know of which is great. I wish I grabbed a fork for my chili dog. They loaded that doggy UP and it was a messy eat, especially without a table. But it was delicious and the servers were really nice. If I want a loaded dog, I know where to go. read more

Everything was nicely organized and the staff were super friendly and patient is my indecisive self took some time to finally decide to order a latte and in everything bagel with herb cream cheese. The latte itself wasn't anything too special but it was an okay latte. Maybe a little bit too much milk flavor and not enough espresso. The bagel was very solid. And I appreciate the amount of cream cheese that was on the bagel. It was enough that if you took the bagel apart there was a solid layer of cream cheese on each half. If you're walking around on 4th Street and are looking for a quick bite, Oceanview Deli is a great option. They serve slices of pizza for around $5, as well as a wide assortment of pastries and other savory goods. The service here is quick and there's minimal wait for your order, unlike next door at the sit down diner. My wife and I shared a turkey wrap, an egg bite, and the green goddess penne pasta salad with chicken. Not a single thing I wouldn't happily order again. Bette's Oceanview Diner is back, just without Bette, may she rest in power enjoying all of her signature soufflé pancakes that she so richly deserves! Like all phoenixes that must rise from the ashes, the newly rechristened Oceanview Diner and its new fast-casual/ takeout operation called Oceanview Deli and Bakery has recently reopened as a worker-owned business. Like so many who live in the northwestern area of the East Bay, a visit to Fourth Street in this trendy area of Berkeley and a long wait in line for a coveted table for weekend brunch at Bette's Oceanview Diner, was a right of passage. We were all saddened by their closure after almost forty years in business earlier this year. But in a matter of months negotiations with Bette's remaining owner, as well as the building's landlord has led to the new Diner, Deli and Bakery operation. A recent warm weekday afternoon of running errands in the Fourth Street corridor led me to discover that Oceanview Deli and Bakery was not only still open when I arrived to check things out, but they were fully stocked with all of their pre-made dishes ready to be sold, but their kitchen staff was ready to make a number of their made to order entrées that their menu listed. Like its previous incarnation, Oceanview Deli and Bakery specializes in baked goods and made-to-order sandwiches, along with a broadened menu of pizza, bagels, hot dogs, soup, Mexican entrées, specialty entrées, and salads. As I walked around and attempted to see what options there were in their numerous bakery cases that I liked, what kept drawing me back was seeing two halves of their two remaining pizzas they had on display on their case that featured all of their salads and wraps. One pizza was one that was called their Margherita Pizza, and the other was called their Daily Special Pizza and today it was their Mushroom Pizza that had mushrooms, fresh herbs, and caramelized onions. And after I asked one of their representatives what their Margherita Pizza, after learning it was basically a version of their cheese pizza, I was down to ordering a slice of their Mushroom Pizza Special, especially after learning that a slice of pizza at Oceanview Deli and Bakery only cost $4.50, I was sold. And since I like something, anything quite frankly sweet with my meal, I opted to order a single Chocolate Chip cookie, which cost $3.25. My bill of less than $10 with tax and before tip, for a large slice of pizza that was warmed per my request and a chocolate chip cookie, I felt was a totally reasonably priced deal, especially when considering the cost of food in that neighborhood, even for lunch. Upon my return home, I dove into my large slice of Mushroom Pizza, with a fork and knife, because you can't judge me, as the slice had an abundance of fresh ingredients, all of which were well seasoned and prepared to what was really perfection. I was so glad my pizza slice tasted so good, but was surprised when my cookie didn't taste as good, as there was really nothing wrong with it besides being a wee bit dry for my taste, because for $3.25 for and fairly large size cookie that tasted fairly average was a wee bit disappointing in my opinion. This only makes me want to come back for more sweet treats being sold at Oceanview Deli and Bakery, as their Bread Pudding and Chocolate Croissant both looked amazing, and I instantly had regrets over not ordering them the first time I was there. That and one of their Hot Sandwiches as their Reuben and Tuna Melts were simply calling my name, especially since all of their hot sandwiches are sold for under $11, which in today's economic world is nothing but a small miracle and we all know will not last long. So consider myself a regular customer at Oceanview Deli and Bakery, as their still serving up a wide variety of hearty lunchtime meals for takeout sold at affordable price points, and to make sure that their hard working staff was made a priority when reopening this Berkeley institution only adds to the importance of legacy businesses in the area. And you can't create more of a legacy than what co-founders Bette and Manfred Kroening and Sue Conley imagined what would be when they started Bette's Oceanview Diner and To-Go those four decades ago, which is an extraordinary legacy indeed. read more

This diner does not sell burgers or French fries! The music is too loud. You cannot even have a conversation. The service was also very slow considering it was half empty. Overpriced too for what you get. The potatoes which were in lieu of French fries were burnt and lacked salt. The dining booths were extremely tiny too. I'm a skinny guy. We were in Berkeley and were kind of in a rush and wanted something quick to eat and we right by this place so we grabbed something here. Not "quick" per se (there were a lot of people) and I'm not sure why it's called "Oceanview" since there's no ocean within view but the food was good. I had a slice of pizza, my wife got a sandwich and the third person in our party grabbed a bagel and said it was excellent. We all also got cookies which were okay, especially on the run. What a great experience. Decent parking lot about half a block away so that was an easy check mark! Service was super quick and the selection was decent. Had a roast beef with house thousand island on ciabatta bread. Super tasty! Actually split it with someone and it was perfect size. When I tried to set up a review page for this spot in May I didn't do it well enough (it helps to have the correct name and precise address) and Yelp combined it w/ the main review thread for Oceanview Diner. Someone else did a better job and I just discovered it when I was looking to order a Cuban sandwich for lunch. Ordering online is via an app called spoton, which is very straightforward and convenient. I ordered the sandwich and some of their potato salad. While the sandwich was good, it won't replace the Cubano from Venus, which is my gold standard and is no longer available. Here's what I said in May: Bette's-To-Go has reopened as Oceanview-To-Go. Though it shares the address w/ the diner, it's a separate business that serves takeout. I came over to check out their wares after Nina and I had finished lunch. I wanted to see if they had a treat for me to take to Alan. I looked at the front counter, which had cookies and other pastries, including veggie empanadas. First I saw a morning bun, which I knew he would like and then I saw a tray of Golden State Warriors cookies, w/ the team logo and various players' numbers. I had to have a couple of those, so I bought 23, Draymond Green's number, and 3, Jordan Poole's. I also saw Steph Curry's and Otto Porter, Jr's numbers. There may have been others but that was enough. The case toward the back may have had more savory stuff in it but I didn't look closely. The nice man who helped me check out helped me to decipher the credit card machine, which had tiny print. I really appreciated that. The latte was good. However, I ordered the egg bites and they were given to me cold. Who eats cold scrambled eggs?? I asked if they would heat them up for me and the brown headed female there is no. I suggested they advertise they're served cold. She pointed to the display and said, "they're at room temperature". I thought it was just a display. I threw the food away while I waited for my latte. In diners across America counter seating in open seating. People who frequent diners and eat alone have comfort in that policy. If you want to scream at a patron trying to sit down without being on a waiting list for a counter seat, maybe it's time to step away and do something else. There are better ways of letting someone know that the six empty stools at the counter are waiting for people on a list than being rude and yelling. Yes. Six empty stools. I know it's busy, I know it's the weekend and raining, but really? That tone of voice. Take a day off, find something that brings you joy instead of belittling customers who might not be familiar with your particular arrangements. Sandwiches were good but the baked goods were so-so. I def wouldn't go out of my way to go there for the baked goods. We had a biscotti- which was more like a once baked biscotti before it's cut and 2nd baked. Taste was ok on that one. We also had a lemon bar which was not that good. Mostly just sweet and weird texture more like lemon-flavored angel food cake on a cookie crust than curd. Had zero tang. The sandwiches were quite large and tasty- great deal for the price. read more
