We were supposed to stay here for two weeks in unit 61. We got settled in, unpacked & right away,…read morewe started killing spiders . The first night, we killed 4 spiders. The next morning, 5 out of 6 couples woke up complaining about the beds. There were 6 beds in the unit & 5 of them felt like sleeping on a box spring. Some of the pillows were so flat that it was like sleeping on a towel. Then we noticed spider webs all over the unit, some with eggs in them & some with baby spiders crawling. I called the office to complain about the spider infestation we had & was told no one has ever complained about spiders. Dan came in & killed a couple of the huge spiders with a broom & sprayed stuff on 3 base boards. After he left, we took the vacuum cleaner & vacuumed all the spider webs & spiders we could find. By the next morning, we had more spider webs. Long story short, we vacuumed spiders & and cobwebs every day for our entire stay. We had spider webs in our shoes, fishing rod holders & just spiders everywhere. I stopped in the office after we'd been there for 5 nights & still complained about spiders. Again, I was told no one has ever complained about spiders. We left our paid vacation early 4 days early with no refund, but we just couldn't take it anymore. People were getting bit by spiders & the beds were just killing us. The couch in the unit was so uncomfortable, as were the kitchen chairs. Our lawn chairs were more comfortable to sit on than the furniture in the unit. The docks were so high that it was tough to get in & out of the boats from the boat lifts they make you rent. I paid $65 for extra people to stay & was still charged $3 for one set of clean sheets so someone else could use that bed. The unit was so dry that we got nose bleeds, sore throats & the chemicals sprayed stirred up our allergies. After the chemicals were sprayed in the unit, one of our people went home sick. The owners don't care about the people, just the money. I paid $5,600 for a vacation from hell & I definitely wouldn't recommend this place for even my dogs.

Our kids are teens & tweens and they enjoyed themselves on the water tramp, bikes, canoe & water playground. I can see that this would be a fantastic place for smaller kids too. The beach is protected and shallow entry, the water playground is surrounded by dock, also feels very protected and safe. It's a quiet section of lake with perfect access to the chain of lakes great for boating, skiing etc. there's a convenient boat rental place right up the lake too. We will definitely be back.

The owners are super friendly and have something going on all week long to help if the fishing is slow. I don't really have anything bad to say, so I will try and list all of the things that are great about this place. We had a total of 5 cabins split between the family. I stayed in cabin #1 with my wife, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and my 2 yr old niece. The cabin was very cozy between the 5 of us. It was one of the smaller cabins, but it had a porch and a nice view of the lake through the back. All of the cabins are very clean and up to date with fireplace, a/c, fully functional kitchen, and electric heaters. The grounds of the resort is beautiful. Flower beds were blooming with flowers. There is a newly renovated playground area, a volleyball pit, a game room, and a very nice fish cleaning station. A secret garden can be found with very interesting knick knacks and decor. There is a swimming beach lined with kayaks, fun bugs, paddle boats, paddle boards, and other various water accessories. Again, all of the equipment has been well taken care of, so much that a lot of it looks brand new. These items are all available to use by the campers with a proportional deposit at the main office. There is a boat ramp and very nice boat stalls where you can tie up a boat or even keep your boat under a covered dock with a boat lift. The resort is conveniently located near local establishments where you can pick up food, alcohol, fishing gear, etc. My only minor complaint about the place is that they do not allow dogs, but I can understand their reasoning as the cabins are closely quartered and many people probably don't want to deal with peoples obnoxious pets while on vacation. All in all, Black Pine Beach Resort is a wonderful place to get away from reality, and I look forward to the many future Labor Days to come at BPBR.

One year, my family decided to visit all the remaining resorts. We wanted to find the best resort and best value. This one was a gem! We have stayed there a few times now, and I wouldn't consider any other resort on the Whitefish chain. I can tell the owners not only care about their resort, but they care about the Crosslake-Pequot Lakes- Pine River area. I hope and pray the owners don't decide to retire and sell it off. Level land and cabins steps from the lake make the water easily accessible. It's a a cove on Gull Lake so a bit protected from the really busy boat traffic (there still is traffic- just not as much as on the main partnof the lake). Beautiful spot to watch the sunset from. We stayed in Cabin 1 which is actually a trailer with an attached screen porch. Tiny but enough space for 2. Lots of cute, personalized touches like a chalkboard greeting us by name and some fresh cookies on the table. The only problem was that it was a very humid weekend and the wall air conditioner in the living room just didn't help the bedrooms. Kayaks are free to take out, which I loved! The calm water in the cove plus rhe nearby channels are perfect for kayking. Staff and owners are very friendly and helpful. You need to bring your own towels and soap for the shower. This isn't a big resort so no restaurant or anything like that on-site. Not much of a beach so I don't think I'd bring small children. More for adults who want to relax and maybe boat.

It is perfect for an extended family trip where you want family togetherness but also some space of your own. Yes, I would love it if the showers were bigger and I could do laundry while I was there, but you know what, you can't have everything, and sitting on the screened in porch with my coffee and a book in the morning and canoeing in the afternoon or playing on the little beach makes it all worthwhile. Sue and staff do a wonderful job here and there's a good reason they are often booked months in advance.

Here's why: The rooms/cabins: Our cabin was amazing. We stayed in a "cottage," which is a two-story, three bedroom cabin. There was a ton of space, including three full bathrooms, a huge kitchen and living room, a washer/dryer, and plenty of storage space. Everything was in in great condition, clean, and the kitchen was well-appointed. Our parking space was close by, and we were about 20 yards from the beach. The resort: TONS of stuff to do. There's a multitude of boating options, from free paddle boats to rental kayaks and fishing boats. The lake is warm enough to swim (and there's a small swimming beach - wish it was a bit bigger). Contrary to what some people said, we had no problem catching fish in the lake. There were toys down by the lake which our daughter LOVED playing with. The indoor and outdoor pool were both great, and the grounds were overall nice to walk around. Although we didn't use them, there's a really nice paved bike trail and bicycles for rent. The staff: super friendly and accomodating, they went the extra mile to make sure we had a great time. Rates: high in the height of summer (of course), but in late summer when we went (right after labour day), very reasonable. Location: just two hours from the Twin Cities, and super close to Target, Costco, and other stores...the perfect blend of nature and civilization. All in all, a great place to stay on a lake in Northern(ish) Minnesota!

We stayed at Kavanaughs for 4 nights this summer for our first time! We stayed in the 3 bed, 2 bath…read moreunits called the Woods. We were right off a playground and a beach, so perfectly located for a family with young kids! The resort is family owned and much smaller than the surrounding resorts. I found this to be a good thing - it's quieter and low key! The house was fine - definitely an older building but it was functional - it had a full kitchen stocked with basics and an a/c unit. The rooms are smaller but we were easily able to fit a pack n' play in the biggest room. They do offer a mini crib for free as well. We took advantage of the fire pits one day to roast s'mores (they have several fire pits around), went swimming in both the indoor and outdoor pools & hot tub, and spent time in the lake. The property is located within 10-20min of many restaurants, activities for kids and adults (ie golf), and towns. Def recommend checking out Nisswa's downtown - it's super cute!! We plan to return next year!
