I made an appointment with Laurelle who is unbelievably knowledgeable and experienced with not just the meaning and energy of each crystal but how they would work in in conjunction with what I already had. Laurelle's wealth of knowledge goes beyond the interpretation of the crystals as we discussed topics that most of my friends wouldn't know how to process. The difference in how I was treated compared to other customers was clear and unacceptable. I was not greeted or offered help at any point, while other (white) customers were. Instead, I was closely watched the entire time I was in the store. At the front of the store, a male employee pretended to organize items but was actually staring directly at me for several minutes while I was looking at incense. I paid attention to see if he was actually working or watching me, and it became clear he was pretending to organize while staring at me. When I called him out, he denied it and walked away. In the middle of the store, while I was looking at the incense you can hand pick, a female employee was also staring at me and following my movements. I purposely moved side to side to see if she was following me, and she mirrored me each time. I called her out, she denied it, and walked away. Still in the middle of the store, when I moved to look at Florida Water, that same male employee continued staring at me from the register. When I asked him for help, he went to the same female employee who had just followed me instead of helping me himself. She told him the answer, and he relayed it back to me, showing he was not knowledgeable about the products yet was quick to follow and watch me. Then I went to the back of the store to look at mala beads, and from the middle of the store that same male employee continued staring at me again. This happened multiple times within about 20 minutes. I confronted him again and asked why he kept staring at me and why I had not been greeted or asked if I needed help. He admitted that he did not greet me or ask if I needed help, and when I had to ask for assistance, he didn't want to help me and was not knowledgeable about the products I had questions about. I went next door to their sister store, Namaste Bookshop to ask for a manager's contact information. The employee was hesitant to provide it and incorrectly said there was no email. When I called the number given, no one answered. In the past, I've shopped here and this never happened to me, which makes this even more disappointing. That said, my frugal Asian immigrant upbringing absolutely recoils at the idea of spending hard-earned income on rocks, no matter how pretty they are or how much they're touted to improve one's spiritual well-being. Over the past few years, I've been experimenting with adding in some accessories to my wardrobe. During a visit to Philly earlier this year, I accidentally shattered a cheap hematite ring I'd picked up as a souvenir from Shasta Caverns, and I've been keeping an eye out for a replacement. I spotted a bowl of similar rings -- except they were rainbow-y! -- at the cashier counter here and couldn't resist picking one up. I love how inclusive this shop is: they proudly support Native/Indigenous artists and they're queer-friendly, too. Quest Bookshop was the only place that popped up. The location is perfect for me because it's super close to the train and in the area I work in. This bookstore really specializes in spiritual things but theres a lot of information plastered everywhere I didn't feel too lost. They have a lot of stones and they tell you which each one is meant for. I saw in the back someone reading tarot cards and they also have other events like knowing your enneagram which I thought was pretty cool. I don't know much about this bookstore but I feel like it's such a nice staple in midtown that I can really see myself as a regular.
