On a recommendation from a friend, I contacted Greg at Earth Tones Landscaping. The process began with an idea of what I wanted the landscape to look like. Greg did a rough sketch, added suggestions, and we went from there. All prior grass and planting material were removed by them as agreed upon prior to the work beginning. They had a clean slate to work with. Upon clearing an area with plants Greg and Jimmy came upon two alligator lizards that they moved to the back yard. Hopefully, they will find their way back to the front yard after the work is completed. They really did create a beautiful outdoors landscape bringing feelings of the Sierra Mountains and Joshua Tree to the landscape. An example of how a low maintenance and drought tolerant landscape can be lush and exciting. During the process, both Greg and Jimmy paid meticulous attention to detail with the placement of the brick walkway, brick lined pathway, placement of boulders, rocks for the dry creek bed, and plants. Happy that I opted to add the outdoor lighting. The lighting adds to the magic of the landscape. Needless to say, the landscape went beyond my wildest expectation and works well with a historical Tudor style home. It is gorgeous. 3 years ago we found this company when we were looking to update and improve our front and backyard landscape and softscape. We put our project to bid with several companies and ultimately decided Earth Tones was our company. We then decided to focus on interior improvements and put off the outside Fast forward to 2018, we were ready to do the outside. Again we put the project to bid and again decided on Earth Tones. They just completed our project and we are thrilled. Fred and his sons Fred and Greg and their team transformed our 35 year old landscape into a show stopper yard. They were able to salvage part of a pool deck we thought would have to be demo'd. They were responsive, professional, fun, helpful and kind. We couldn't be happier with our yard. We now have a beautiful sitting wall, a concrete courtyard, beautiful planters with plants, trees and lighting and they installed a beautiful flag pole. My Yard Needed a Facelift!!!!! I called Earth Tones from a advertise booklet that comes to our neighborhood. Fred, the owner, answered immediately. Made an appointment for the upcoming Saturday 9am. He was there promptly at 9am. I told him what I visualized and he one up'd me with a better visual which included bringing butterflies and hummingbirds to the yard. :) His visual required retraining the dogs but beauty cost. LOL. We agreed on a plan, a budget and a date. Yard was completed in two days as estimated. The job was a family affair with music and laughter going on in the yard which was really cool. Communication was awesome. I'm all about communication and great customer service. Fred made follow up calls after the job was complete to make sure I was satisfied, I knew the watering schedule and what and when to expect the true beauty to appear. I found Fred Brown to be arrogant and he tried to pressure me into doing my landscaping job the way he wanted it done. He did not listen to my wishes but instead wrote a quote according to his. I knew as soon as he told me Earth Tones didn't waste their time on jobs under $5,000 that this was not the company for me. I couldn't believe that he told me I did not need to use a weed barrier ground cover before putting down rock, and advised that I could have the weeds sprayed! I'm going with another well known landscaper who is doing the job the way I want -- literally at half the cost Earth Tones wanted to charge which was outrageous. read more

Fred and his crew do a good job but he uses poor plants. He keeps in mind California native plants but it looks like he may recycle the plants from previous jobs. He planted hideous cacti in our garden. Now we are finding out some of the shrubs (Carolina Cherry) he planted in our yard are the most toxic for dogs and he knew we had dogs. We told him it had to be pet friendly. He used a ground cover in place of our front lawn that we found out from our local nursery can only grow in highly shaded moist areas; living in Riverside CA, that will not happen. Working with contractors can sometimes be like going to the dentist, unavoidable and probably painful. This was SO not that. Our experience with Earth Tones was painfree and pleasant. We had an estimate within a couple of days and Fred went the extra mile to work with our budget. Greg's team completed the vision as promised, Colorful and Lush. And they finished a day before deadline! They are full service company: they designed the plan, installed a new sprinkler system with drip irrigation, built a seating wall, put in flagstone paths and put in lighting for our beautiful new front and backyard. I found work they had done and loved it. So I went on line and made an appointment. Top man(?) came and did a 10 min walk, where I told him what I wanted. He said he would have some one come and give me a quote. A week later no one had contacted me, so I called them back. I was told the quote was ready and it would be sent to me. I wondered how they could get a quote ready as no one had come back to measure or check out in more detail what I wanted.A quote came but no detail no linear details, just a general description. I wanted to know what it would cost for basic work, then more on level 2 and then more on Level 3. I got all three but don't know what it really was for. I went back to landscape store, and asked for some one. I found man who said he would check and call me back. NO ONE EVER CALLED. I went back to store, and Manager said he did talk to the person who came out, and was told it was a good quote. I asked why he never called me back. No comment was given. Later I called the landscape man and asked him for some detail, like how did he measure anything when no one ever came back? He said he measured the area from Geo Earth. I am not stupid, but my house on Geo Earth shows the side of my house where the work was to be done, as in very dark shade and no able to see any thing. An other lie. He told me he would send me the quote with details on it, It has not arrived in last 3 weeks. I don't trust the people that helped me to do any work as they are not truthful and don't every follow up with anything, Horrible experience. I spent all my working life as a very good salesman. I would have been fired doing what these men did to me and now not getting any of my business. I can't recommend them to even sweep off my patio. read more

I wish I could say that earth tones was fantastic and that they did excellent work --- but I can't! Why? I put on a job on home advisor and I explained what the dimensions were and what we were thinking about. Earth-Tones was one of the companies that home advisor matched us up with. Initially someone from the company set up a time to call me so they could talk about it. When that person called - he asked if we had received bids and how many we had received and from which companies we had received them from. Finally, after getting the information he wanted he said "It sounds like a small project. And frankly we are at the place where we can pick and choose the work we take. And your job just sounds too small. And we are really expensive. I know those other two companies you should use one of them" Well no worries there because I for certain won't ever be using earth-tones and I will be letting all my friends to not use them either!! read more

We had our yard done a year & a half ago (I know I'm a little slow on writing this!), but I have referred several people to Fred & Earthtones Landscaping. They have been equally happy with the work Fred did in their yard. I can't say enough about the level of professionalism, expertise, & attention to detail that Fred put into our yard. We wanted a drought tolerant landscape that would be vibrant & dog friendly. Fred proposed some designs that exceeded our expectations when they were executed. He welcomed & encouraged our input throughout the process. His dad helped us pick out plants that we liked, but also gave input when some of our picks weren't the best choice. Besides the landscaping, he designed & installed a gas firepit, picked up & installed our waterfall, installed lighting, and came up with a cool design for the front yard. I'm glad so many other customers had great experiences with Earth Tone but I did not. I give them due credit for their scheme, working on time, their communication, and coming back to tend to some fix-its. It's been eighteen months since their work was completed, that's when ET said everything would be fully in, so now I'm reporting two major on-going problems. The decomposed granite walkway they put it has been riddled with weeds, not just a few, but many continuous sproutings. I asked about lining underneath the granite but ET said it was unnecessary. Spraying the sedge with Sedgehammer at about $20 for a 7 oz. bottle online and it taking 6 weeks to take full effect is frustrating especially as new growth pops up. The other issue was with my slope, 80 yards by 20 yards. ET originally planted insufficient numbers of Japanese honeysuckle. When I pointed out the lack of coverage, ET gave 18 pallets more - as long as I was willing to plant them, they would devote no more labor to that. And in one stubborn area on the slope, the plants wouldn't take, Again, this time after some real haggling, I was given 18 more pallets - I was expected to plant them myself along with ET's statement that that was all ET would give. I've put in 100+ hours of planting and weeding and a dozen treatments of Miracle-Gro on that area, now it's 75%covered. I guess my biggest disappoint is that ET is apparently satisfied that an incomplete job is fine so long as they meet their contractual obligations even if the situation requires some more to be done right. read more

He came up with a vision for our backyard, something my husband and I needed help with (we knew what items we wanted but not the flow). We did an 18ft Pondless stream, and they did a fantastic job, almost better than I imagined, they also landscaped the area around the stream. I also did new lighting and new granite gravel on the pathway which really brightened up the whole yard. I spoke to Fred, the owner, over the phone. I told him that I needed an estimate because the house we're buying is in escrow but it has already has a citation on it for not having landscaping. He said he'd give me a verbal one, and if I wanted to work with him, he'd give me a written one. Money was never mentioned! Upon arrival, he saw me and immediately said that the written estimate would be $90! I told him he didn't mention this over the phone. He proceeded to say that escrows fall out all of the time, and asked if I was even pre-qualified? I was being pre-judged! My husband and I have FICOs of 813 & 818 and pre-qualified $200K over the asking price of the house. UNBELIEVABLE! He wasted our time because we drove nearly an hour to meet him at the house.
