The yuzu shampoo smells amazing! I'm going to use this for my "spa showers." I also bought the lavender goat milk soap bar - smells way better than the one I bought in the farmers market. Love this store. Every time I come here I find something else I can be buying here instead of buying wasteful plastic containers. I bring all my own containers (which are mostly glass mason jars that used to be for tomato sauce etc). You search around for what you want and then put your containers on the counter, and the person working helps you to actually fill them up. They have a bunch of varieties of Dr Bronner's. And then they have a laundry detergent free of fragrances which I have been using for years now. I also get refills for my floss holder here! And just recently I tried a fragrance free lotion. Kris (who is the owner I believe) helped me during the entire trip. You tell him what you want in the bottle and he fills it for you. It's uncomfortable to make a purchase without ever knowing the separate weights of the used container and the product. The owner keeps the scale facing the wall instead of the consumer. The receipt does not show the weight of the container or the product. This leaves the consumer in the dark. We have to take their word for it. At a refill store out of state , I used a large mayonnaise jar from home. When I looked at the receipt, the owner said she accidentally thought the mayo jar weight was .4oz but it was actually 14oz. So she "accidentally" charged me extra 10oz for the product. It's only fair for consumers to know what the weight of the non chargeable, used containers are. This ensures the consumer is not over charged by "accident". Ever notice the scales at the farmers market have the weight shown on BOTH sides. So it's not impossible to have the weight available to view for the consumer. read more

I always have a great experience at Earthwell Refill. I love their products so much (only ever got one shampoo bar that was all wrong.) I have used their clean recycled containers when refilling, brought my own and once I purchased a small container for a really great deodorant that didn't come in a stick or its own little container. I like all the deodorants they carry though it did turn out im sensitive to cornstarch, so the last one I tried was a winner and smells amazing, like winter mint or Thai basil. Your probably wondering what's the brand? I can't remember cuz no packaging on my refill container but its the one that doesn't have cornstarch and its blue and smells so nice. And it works! I also really like their Griffin Remedy (?) Unscented shower gel with EFAs. It might be called skin food or I may have made that up. Cleansing, non-drying. I use it on face and body. I love their Unscented moisturizer too. After years of looking for the perfect fragrance, I decided I like the clean smell of unscented since you can smell if the oils do or don't smell right, to make sure it hasn't "gone off." Someone commented that they would like to be able to see the scale part of the formula of how much you're getting (for example in ounces) and what the bulk price is, and I agree, but it's not a deal breaker for me that they aren't set up that way. They are always nice about answering questions and filling your bottles for you, like how a shop clerk would have helped you 100 years ago. So be ready for them to assist you! Bring your own containers, or if you forget them there's a box with free containers people have donated, then you can fill them with amazing high-quality products for hair, skin and home! I love everything about this shop and I'm so glad it's convenient, right smack dab in the middle of Kensington Village, in the Clem's plaza. (btw, they're open during the upstairs building construction!) I've been sitting on this review for awhile. Thinking about what to say and how to balance my experience and review it accordingly. I was SO excited to find this refill station, because it's so important to minimize waste, especially plastics that proliferate almost everything we buy. So maybe you're wondering what my issue is? It's so, so so so expensive. I'm all for sustainability, trying to work towards it more every day. But at these prices it isn't sustainable for me to come back here again, which is unfortunate, because I would come back every few weeks if it was. A half a large container of laundry Detergent, a 16oz hand soap, 16oz body wash and another 16oz dish soap, cost $68.00. Yes. SIXTY EIGHT DOLLARS. I should have paid more attention to the website, for some reason I thought they also offered refills for basic namebrand household items like "dawn" or "tide" for those of us not yet 100% switched over to this way of living. Instead it's all natural items and brands. Again, I'm all for it... but for people to be on board and be willing to make these adjustments, the prices can't be so high. I ordered some glass bottles on Etsy before coming here, but didn't realize that they had empty bottles people have donated to use, so you don't have to come in with your own bottles if you don't have any! The girl working was very helpful, pouring the solutions I needed. They had a lot of variety and I'm glad this place is so close to me! They carry many of the brands I love and use regularly such as Biokleen (household cleaners and laundry products), Dr. Bronner's, ECOS, and others. You can either bring your own container to fill or you can buy one. They also have a small collection of free containers that have been donated so fear not if you forgot yours to refill. In addition to cleaning supplies, there are body care products and hair care products, too. There are also supplies to make your own creations such as apple cider vinegar, baking soda, washing soap, etc. Not only are you reducing your plastic and packaging waste by refilling the containers you already have, but you'll also be less likely to waste a product that you buy from them. This is because Earthwell allows you to purchase as little or as much as you want at any given time. Curious about that shampoo? You can buy two ounces and try it once to see you if like it. I can't think of how many products I've barely used because I didn't like them and then tossed them a year or two later. What a waste. There are testers for each product, and when you're ready with your selections, hand you containers over to the friendly workers. I'm determined to reduce single-use plastic containers. Earthwell Refill is a great resource that allows me to refill my containers with the products I need for home and skin care. Here is how I use them: For my home: -Dr. Bronner's Sal's Suds: I have refilled my original 32oz bottle at Earlthwell Refill for over a year. I see no reason to ever buy a new bottle. It's concentrated, so with dillution it lasts a long time. I use it as dish soap, and all the things you do with dish soap. It is unscented. -High-acid Vinegar: I refill my 64oz vinegar jug at Earthwell with 10% acid vinegar. This is double strength of regular white vinegar, so it can be diluted and goes twice as far. -Laundry detergent: I continue to refill a container I had from another brand. Earthwell's is concentrated (lot's of loads), and they have an unscented option. For my shower and teeth: -Dr. Bronner's Castile soap: they have all the scents. Again, concentrated so my 32oz. refill goes a long way because you dilute it before use. -Shampoo and Conditioner: They have several choices -Toothpaste tablets (genius!) They have lots more stuff. I have greatly reduced my consumption of products in plastic containers while continuing to be able to use the products I love. read more

I just discovered this place and I am so thrilled there's a place where I can try natural products with minimal commitment (almost all items are sold by the ounce), the prices are awesome, I can refill my old containers (or buy a refillable bottle/jar there), there are even some free donated containers you can use, the service was exceptional, and there's free parking. They also sell reusable bamboo utencils for lunch, bamboo straws, straw brushes, lunch containers, pet shampoo bars, human shampoo bars, bamboo toothbrushes, floss, shavers.... you know what, just check it out for yourself! Earthwell Refill is the ONLY natural product refill center in San Diego and I am soooo glad they exist! Kris and Katrina know something about everything, and have a natural alternative to any product you could think of. The quality is one thing but the selection is beyond amazing. Earthwell is open daily and it's always best to stop in midweek/mid afternoon if you want to avoid crowds. There is only one scale for weighing and filling, so be kind and be patient. Not much is better than having all natural products and being able to support a small, family business. You can get lotions, detergent, shampoos, and plenty more here at Earthwell. I mainly come here to refill my dish soaps (love the ones, work great and smell nice) and get shampoo bars but I want to try so many of their other cleaning products. Next on my list is laundry! I've gone here a couple times to refill on some products. Your containers are always tarred and there's a wide selection for soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc as well as other zero waste items. The workers are always nice and helpful. I absolutely love how we have a zero waste store in San Diego! I have been wanting to make it here for months now and I'm so happy I finally did! From my research, this is one of the only eco friendly grocery stores in the San Diego area. I went on a Sunday afternoon and I was surprised by how small the shop was, but despite its modest look I was so impressed by the variety of products available! They had everything from shower gel to shampoo and conditioner, menstrual cups and toothpaste tabs and dish soap, everything you could ever need! I got 32 ounces of the volumizing shampoo and 32 ounces of the restorative conditioner. I also got a small container of the Bulgarian lavender body lotion. I paid $63 total which seems reasonable to me, given the fact that the shampoo and conditioner will likely last me at least 5-6 months and also the products are all natural and nontoxic! It felt great shopping here and the two women working at the time were so sweet. They were doing a great job managing so many customers and were so nice, patient, and eager to help. I will definitely be back whenever I need any new products for myself or my house, no need to go to target or Walmart anymore to buy cleaning supplies and self care products in plastic jars. I think I might be a bit bias because I'm from Seattle, so I'm used to very hippy-environmentally-focused retail, and had really high hopes for Earthwell. I still LOVE it - don't get me wrong, I will be coming back here. It's just too bad this is the only refill zero waste store in San Diego. I would like to see this store expand their product lines, such as stocking unpaper towels, cheaper alternatives (their lotion selection is very high quality but much more expensive than what I would typically pay, to fill the bottle of lotion I wanted to refill that cost me $10 and the store would have been $30) and other sustainable kitchen solutions. I believe they could benefit from better product display as well, there were a lot of cool items I almost didn't see had I not spent a fair amount of time looking around. I came in thinking I would probably buy a cloth menstrual pad but there was such a small selection in kind of awkward presentation I ended up changing my mind. Awesome concept! Staff is incredibly friendly and their business is for a great cause. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because of price. If you want to get all purpose cleaner, it's perfect. It's maybe 1-2$ more than you would pay at any other store but you get to help a local business, limit your waste, and utilize a non-toxic product. When it comes to hand soap... HOLY $$$$. I brought in a dial container from Smart & Final I finally emptied, which I paid 2.99$ for. It is around the size of a normal bottle of dish soap. It was 42$.... I was shocked. I think this place is great and I know how business works. You have a cost associated with your product along with staffing hours and rent. But I think spending more than 5$ on hand soap is a little much. Please be careful when bringing in containers. Do the math! read more

The place is a great addition to north park. As I'm transitioning my apartment to " zero waste" I found this place and, JACKPOT! I brought my mason jar in and filled it will some bulk conditioner. They let me take a sample to try first for only a few bucks! Updating my review because I'm so in love with this place! The owners are wonderful. I'm in here at least once a month, sometimes once a week . they have expanded so much in the last year, it's incredible. They have everything to make your zero waste transition go smoothly.
