Prices seem expensive, but you'll save in the long run by buying plants that will thrive instead of home depot generic strains that barely limp along because they can't handle our cool summers. Visiting this Nursery is like visiting a botanical garden. They have a wide variety of plants and what seem to me to be top-shelf products. But while I don't doubt their plants' prices are reasonable given their expert care, as someone with a modest income, I can rarely afford anything but the smallest plants. My suggestion would for them to have a (larger) discounted plants area where people like me could pick up cheap, if slightly damaged plants. read more

East Bay Nursery has the best selection for outdoor plants in the East Bay. They have a huge selection of flowers, shrubs, and trees and are well-stocked throughout the year. Everything I've bought has been healthy and has done well once I got it home. Employees have been consistently nice and helpful. They also have a small, but decent selection of indoor plants. They have lots of plant pots in colors and styles that are hard to find elsewhere, too. However, like others have mentioned, I can't stand that they are closed on Sunday...it seems like an odd day to be closed for a business that is likely to get the most traffic on the weekends. read more

He was very knowledgable and explained what color the flowers would be, how long they would be in bloom, and what the plant would look like in its non-flowering state. I love this nursery. It is more pricey but you get what you pay for. They always have the healthiest plants in stock and very knowledgeable people in the rows. The counter staff seem less knowledgeable so I would ask your questions before check-out. The selection of shrubs, trees, and herbaceous plants is awesome. Edibles section is smaller but great quality. And I am forever tempted by their bonsai area... *Also I mentioned to the staff that a hummingbird was nesting in a tree. They tagged the tree so it would not be sold until the birds left~ lovely. read more

Yay! They still have marigolds for the ofrenda! Every mid-October I'm frantically looking for live marigolds to put on the Dia de los Muertos altar. I don't know why, but I really like live ones in addition to the cut ones. Went to/called several places and they were the only ones who had a few left. It's the end of their season. Anyway, I've also bought ground cover here several times for backyard projects and you can always find someone to help, it's layed out very easily, and they have a very good assortment. There has never been a time that I have come here that I did not leave a happy customer. As a 6th grade science teacher I always needed plants and flowers for many of my lessons and each time I would call to check they would look for me and hold the item for me. They are amazing at customer service and everyone there is friendly and very helpful. I love this nursery. I wish I could give it five stars, but... After reading below that a person almost bought a plant that was toxic to dogs after asking for advice , I was like oh no! But truth be told, I haven't had stellar help here ever either. But I still love it, because I can get lost here looking at all of the blooms and greenery and wanting to take it all home! I also love the mural painted on the building on the wall facing the parking lot. A gardener's paradise. Bigger and better selection than Home Depot or OSH, but not that cheap. A lot of exotic plants. Most plants are in good condition, unlike the Home Depot root-bound tubs of green that croaks on you in a few days once you get home. Info on the greenery is marked clearly, such as whether it needs sun or shade, or if parts of the plant is poisonous, or if it's deer-proof, because who knows if your neighbor's pet Bambi might come over to chomp on your expensive shrubbery. Packed on weekends because they are not open on Sundays. Which is really annoying, because the lines get very long and it's hard to maneuver around the aisles with too many people. Most of the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful as well, if they're free and unoccupied. There is a small parking lot, but the place is usually packed, so even the street parking around the nursery is usually taken. Might have to wait a while for a spot to open up cuz it can be hard to make quick purchase decisions there--too many choices. Unless you let the price make the decision for you... I was searching all over the internet and also called several nurseries for a specific 2-on-1 Necta Zee Nectarine-Honey Babe Peach miniature fruit tree. I was excited to know that EBN had it in stock. I have never been to EBN, so I was impressed with the number and variety of fruit trees they carried. The nursery was clean and organized, and their plants and trees looked healthy and happy as compared to Home Depot. I had asked for help and advice from two of their staff. Too bad I forgot to write down their names! They were both friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. If I lived closer, I would have shopped here every week! read more

I visited EBN to shop for plants for my front yard as I recently removed the grass and planned to replace it with a decorative rock garden. I was met by Heimie who worked with me. He had asked me previously to bring in color photos of the areas to be planted after I placed the boulders. I spent 2 hours with him as we walked around the nursery viewing plants that would work for my project. We found beautiful plants and 1 tree (Princess Tree) to work in all the areas. The service I received was exceptional and the plants were all healthy and beautiful. I would recommend EBN for anyone in need of plants/trees for your garden. This place is huge! You could get lost here for hours just looking at all the plants and flowers that they have. If it weren't for the nice employees asking if you need assistance then you'd probably just wander around thinking about all that plants you want to take home. Went there this last weekend for the first time and picked up a couple of fruit trees. They were on sale 20% off. I called around and find that the price was in the range of other places. A bit more expensive if they were not on sale. Great selection! Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They have a parking lot. I went early so had no problem with parking. This is one of my absolute favorite nurseries. They have everything you need and a great selection of really healthy house plants, which is very hard to find. They use high quality sources for their stock and carry a range of plant care materials. One of my favorite areas is their huge succulent selection and they have a great selection of Talandsia's which is what I was searching for. What I like best is their fantastic service and the fact that they ask how your plants are doing, if they have had any problems and how can they help fix them. I highly recommend them! read more

Along with good food and wines I also enjoy gardening so I try to visit all my favorite garden and landscape places in my area when the season is upon us. East Bay Nursery is among my favorites for a couple reasons. They always seem to have a wonderful selection of plants and they are really nice people to deal with. I don't know much about their bagged soils and amendments because I only buy these items from American Soil & Stone but their plant selections are great and I always seem to find what I'm looking for. Of all the nurseries in the area, this one is the worst. No doubt they have a good selection but the quality is poor and the staff isn't particularly friendly. I went there last week. Many things were bone dry and wilting. I found something that wasn't too bad and would survive if i could get it a drink of water. I found someone watering in another section and ask if he would mind giving my plant a drink. With a look that said, "go away kid, you're bothering me" he begrudgingly complied. The cashier was a bit snappy, too. I get the impression this is an unhappy workforce. Went i got my prizes home i discovered how badly and completely root-bound everything was. Everything is planted. I do hope they survive. Admittedly i've only been there twice now but there definitely won't be a third time. read more

Customer service is great - there are lots of staff walking around asking if you need help or have any questions. Prices are fair compared to other places and their plants look very healthy. I pulled a quick U-ey going the opposite direction on San Pablo, as this place has never been on my radar, the many many times I've driven this stretch of road! ??? So, in I walk, and the FIRST thing to hit my senses is the Talavera! Oh my goodness. So many pots, and so MANY different variations? I just couldn't stop smiling. And it was a rainy, 50 degree day in almost June. . . what a find! I have never seen so much variety for this brand pottery. And the succulent selection was top-notch. I grabbed a couple of tiny succulents, a chocolate mint geranium, and was good to go. I noticed that their goods were a bit on the high side, but then, you get what you pay for. read more

Imma just be forreal with everyone: I don't know shit about plants/trees/flowers. I don't know how often you're supposed to water them, I don't know if you can over water them, (surely you can under water them), I don't know how to replant one, I don't know how to "pick a good one," I don't know what you're supposed to do with it when all the leaves fall off, I just...don't know anything. Nothing. At all. Nada. So when my dad calls me up at 4pm on the evening of my moms birthday and says, "Hey, go find a Cherry Blossom tree for your mom" I was like "...do what, now?" Despite all my not-knowing, I figured yelp would. I literally typed in "trees" to the search engine and a whole bunch of nursery information popped up. I first called a place in Richmond who directed me to East Bay Nursery and I'm so thankful that she did!! It was local, seemed like it had tons of things to choose from so I called and asked if they carried Cherry Blossom trees. The guy who answered the phone started going on and on about how they carried many varieties and some were 15 gallon and blah blah blah gallon, and this gallon and that gallon and I was like "...k!" So I ran in the joint at like 4:35 like "....I need a tree, I need a tree, I need a TREE!!" Thankfully, Jose came to our rescue! Dude hellllllla knows about plants. Like all kindsa things. I know so little that I didn't even know what to ask so he just started going on and on about the different options, seasons, all kindsa stuff. Such a nice guy. Seriously. So I was in and out of this place, which has a parking lot by the way, in about 35 minutes. And in about 20 minutes, I'll let you know if my mom likes the tree we picked out. Oh and in case you're wondering, I actually ended up getting a Flower Plum tree and not a cherry blossom cuz... this one was purpley-pink, full of flowers, and I liked it better (: It's so pweetyyyyy!!! So I've been meaning to write this review for over a year! My husband and I went into the nursery after buying rather expensive trees. They were supposed to be the same trees, but when we planted them we noticed that they were in NO WAY the same trees. I like symmetry - what can I say! When we went to complain we asked to see the manager because the sales rep disregarded our complaints. Wow - if I thought the rep was sorta rude, I had no idea what was coming. The owner of EB Nursery came out of the door with such aggression I seriously thought he was going to start out the conversation with a punch to by husband's face. I have never seen such aggression in my whole life, even in a sketchy bar. My husband kept calm, but after seeing how he was trying to intimidate my husband I could not keep my cool. I proceeded to tell the owner that I have never experienced such horrible service and that we would tell everyone to not buy from his business. This is when he turned to my husband and told him to get me out of there or he would call the cops. Uh, oh, like I'm some piece of property of my husband. HERE'S THE KICKER - I WAS 40 WEEKS PREGNANT!!!! I would love to have seen a cop come out and handcuff me away. Seriously, peeps, this establishment may have some nice rep people (I've run into a few), but heaven forbid you have any issues. read more

I specifically asked an associate if they have any plants I should not buy (my dog tends to dig and sample the greenery) and was told that everything they have for sale is completely safe for dogs. I almost bought a wisteria plant, but decided on another in the last minute. Later, I read that wisteria is most definitely toxic for dogs. When I rely on this clearly senior nursery employee's expertise (I'm a beginner), I only hope what they have to say is factual. At the least, the person should have said "I'm not sure, but let me know which one you want and I'll research it for you." Don't assume. That can be very dangerous. My dog could have died. Just tried to use East Bay Nursery to buy two street trees to plant at my house. I don't own a truck, so wanted to have the trees delivered. My house is literally 7 minutes from the nursery. They informed me that they only deliver between 10:00 - 2:00, Tuesday - Friday. Those times didn't work for me because, you know, I have a job. They suggested delivering them to the house and leaving them on the street. Also not going to work because I live in Oakland and they'd be gone before I got home. I tried to convince them to deliver them to me on a Saturday, or sometime at the end of the day after I got home from work, in order to get the sale accomplished. They weren't having any of it... Tried to double the price of delivery for Saturday because it was "their busy day." I spent 15 minutes on hold trying to get this worked out, only to have the manager or owner get on the phone and proceed to berate me about wanting to get delivery outside of their narrow window. He told me that he wasn't going to pay someone overtime to deliver outside of business hours and that I should just rent a truck and come and pick them up. I told him I'd just take my business elsewhere. With customer service like I just received, you should too. read more

I do like East Bay Nursery. It is very convenient for me. I have not had the problems with staff that other people seem to have. I have noticed that they are busy sometimes but a little bit of my patience has always paid off for me and I have gotten great advice. Prices are a little high but as they are convenient for me I do not spend the extra money on gas to save a couple bucks. I am only giving 2 stars because I have noticed the same problems as Artemis K. I am not sure where it comes from but the plants that I have gotten from there have had aphids and I got the same yellowish fungus on some of my tomato plants. I went last week to get a sago palm and almost forgot to look closely at the plants. I noticed what looked like scale to me on some of them. No sale. I am sure that they have to battle pests and diseases all the time. I am disappointed in myself and the nursery for not noticing plants with problems and then bringing them home to infect my other plants. I know they have a great selection - and may still shop there but will make sure I give any plant I am thinking of purchasing a complete check. read more

I shop every year for Christmas decorations with a tier of stores I visit regularly for ornaments. I was in this store on Saturday with a packed basket of items to buy and got in line. Imagine my surprise to be barked at and scolded by one of the cash register staff because I did not get in the right line for check-out! The man was gruff and rude and everyone in the store stopped to stare at me. I went to the back of the line and then decided I would vote with my pocketbook (the beauty of free enterprise -- we are indeed free to spend or not!), placed all the ornaments back on the Christmas trees and left the store. I went on to my next store on my list and spent $100! I will remove this store from my annual list. It is one thing to make a mistake and quite another to be rudely upbraided by a staff member. Some of the staff is very knowledgeable and willing to share information. But I am very picky about what plants I buy and what I do with my garden to make sure I won't kill it all off. So I seek advice before I buy and I get pressured to buy more things or dirty looks if I only buy one or two plants after talking about many different ones. Prices high and bonsai selection kind small. I would prefer to shop elsewhere but in a pinch or if I already know what I want I would stop here. read more
