First off, they have a good selection, some plants there are incredibly difficult to find anywhere else. However, parking was a bit hard to find, the online inventory is not accurate at all, and most importantly the plants I did get from them came with quite a few pests. The Dudleyas I purchased had thrips, mealies and aphids, so be ready to quarantine and treat them at home before adding to the collection. read more

This is a great nursery! I have been buying and planting California native plants for at least 40 years and this is tied for the top 2 nurseries in the state. The other nursery is located near me in Central California. East Bay Wilds is over 200 miles away from me. I only wish I could have discovered them sooner! This is not your usual nursery. Pete's knowledge about netive plants is amazing. He does installations, hikes all over collecting seeds and growing natives that ae hard to find as well as getting stock from other growers. They are only open on FRIDAYS. Any other day by appointment. I know its odd, but he does a lot of design and installation work and doesn't sit around the nursery except on Fridays. He is often sought after and sometimes you will need to wait to get hid full attention, but when you do it's golden. You can describe yuor location and detailed needs and he can give you a list of plants that would thrive in those conditions/that area. Again, a quirky experience, but if you are dedicated to native plants anywhere near Oaklan, totally worth the experience, in my opinion. read more

I really wanted to love this nursery because I've been following Pete's content on CA Native species since I took a specialized course on them in college. Unfortunately, their online catalog is not to date and the plants at the nursery are extremely overpriced. We spent around $300 over 2 trips on several manzanita species, perennials, and sages. After planting them, we noticed almost every plant was repotted into a larger container to give the allusion that it was a larger plant. I naively bought the manzanitas ($60 for 5 gal plants) because I thought they were a low growing species. After a trip to East Bay Nursery in Berkeley, the same species were almost 8x the size for the same price. I cherish the knowledge that Pete gives back to the community, but I fear these business practices can really hurt efforts to encourage more folks to transform their gardens to fit the demands of their ecoregions. read more

Look at the inventory online before you go, but know it's not god's word because once you get to the nursery, it's a lawless land. If Paul is there, you're in luck! He can point you in any direction you want to go. Otherwise, Godspeed. The directional letters online lead you nowhere, and if they say it's in stock, it's probably not there. Many pots aren't labeled. If they are, check your tags carefully because they reuse pots and whatever's on the pot might not actually reflect it's contents. read more

We just bought about 7 plants from East Bay Wilds, our first visit. The "3 gallon plants we bought turned out to be just 1 Gallon plants put in a 3 gallon bucket. Taking them out of the plastic it was obvious that they were taken out of the smaller plastic constainers. They also looked like 1gallon plants. read more

came here with my kids one sunday afternoon and he said something that caught me a little bit off guard, he said: "you have no idea what this neighborhood looked like before me." i think his name was Pete. it seems his view of Fruitvale in a nutshell, it would seem, which is sad, cause its a really great neighborhood that has been that way for sometime, definitely some time before him. at this point i decided I no longer wanted to support a business such as this and left with the kids in tow to go find another place that sells weeds. alas, there aren't, and in the end, who cares. a vital place to be part of the gentrifying experience, i suppose. one other criticism: by appointment only so he doesnt have to deal with any of the people actually living IN the neighborhood. see folks flock from the safety of the hills for discount shrubs and itll really make you believe the owner means it when he says this neighborhood sucked before him. read more

At the height of the drought a couple years ago I had a backyard that was a mish mash of overgrown and thirsty plants and grass . Pete and his team replaced the entire collection with California natives. He also created slate and stone paths branching out from my patio adding a needed aesthetic touch. I was so happy with the results I had him replace my front yard last year, also with California natives. The results were equally pleasing and satisfying. His knowledge of the plants is incredible. His estimates for time and schedule were accurate. His team was very thorough and a pleasure to work with. Seems like a beautiful place but they have started putting up caution tape outside their property with signs asking people to not park there and that they will be towed. Hm, seemed fishy since the street is public property, and it's usually a hassle to do this and it's been happening every weekend. I asked the owner to see his permit to block parking and tow people. He said he doesn't have a permit, but otherwise customers won't park and come in "bc they're scared of the neighborhood". He said, since I know that now, I can park where the caution tape is. "We need to survive" he said. Tons of other businesses in the area survive without having to do this. Parking is so tight in this neighborhood people have to park on the sidewalk. And this guys acting like he will tow people, even though he has no legal right to- way to scare the low income people into submission!! read more

They are at 2777 Foothills in Oakland now - Chg of location, same phone. ~**I'd recommend calling first to be sure of Pete's availability.**~ Pete has a great knowledge and selection of natives available here as well as some unusual reused items and pots as well as natives in pots ready for walking out the door for use on a patio. Laid back....this is the kind of place that feels like your college back yard with places to sit on some kitschy stuff that does what it needs to and adds some interest but it is all surrounded by great Ca natives and knowledge. The kitsch is for sale too. Reduce, reuse recycle is always best in that regard so I like that. The only down side is that you must rely on the owner for info on the plants because he propagates and reuses old pots so the labels are not accurate. Since the plants are mostly used for his landscape projects the labels are not necessary because they know what is what but will certainly take time to inform you if you do not know. I do not know the knowledge and help by his staff because I got the impression that they were kind of in and out on jobs and not really sales staff. So again, call first if you are interested in buying plants, planted pots, etc. I have only dealt with the place through a tour and some purchases in one day but Pete's knowledge and the enthusiasm for what he does makes this a 4 star review. read more

Lots of great plants and Pete is a knowledgeable guy. But, you have to be specific about what you want done, how much you want to spend, where you want and don't want plants to go otherwise he'll show up with a truck load of plants of his choosing and stick them in every bare spot he can find. We had to stop him from tearing out thriving non-native plants so he can put a few more of his in the ground. He put in many dozens of plants in our large yard and we ended up moving about a third of them to pots or better locations with better soil because they were dying due to being planted where the soil is rock hard and/or difficult to keep watered. Even with these efforts, we've lost quite a few plants. You know your yard better than he does so you have be prepared to tell him, "Don't put it there." Pete's a nice guy, he means well, he knows his plants but you have to keep him on a short leash. read more

This nursery is amazing! I was looking for a particular native plant and this is the only nursery that I know of that carries it. I found so much more when I visited. The first thing I thought of when I arrived was that this place is more like a work of art than a nursery. It is beautiful! The staff was extremely inviting and eager to help me. I've shopped at this important nursery for many years, and the inventory just keeps getting better. Not a large operation, so it can be tricky to get attention. The inventory, selection and quality of the CA native plants offered is the best in the Bay Area! But of course you can't always get everything - many factors influence availability. Look at the plant list on the website, or call in advance. Too bad the parking situation is difficult; there is often space just inside the entry gate. I have never felt threatened shopping there; walking down the neighborhood street I see mostly families. read more

This company knows its native plants and uses quality materials. Beware of not getting EVERYTHING in writing and pinning down the time frames, the exact plants to be used and where they will go as well as the cost. This is common sense for most (should have been for me), but the bid altered several times, the number and type of plants was altered several times, and the drawing of what and where the plants were to go never transpired. While the work he DID do was good and while the owner does know his native plants - communication needs a WHOLE lot of work. Get it in writing. All of it. Be sure. read more

We didn't "get it in writing" as the previous reviewer advises, but it worked out fine for me. Pete was very responsive to my input and understood what I wanted. The designed changed as the work progressed and we saw how things looked--That was a good thing in my view. I felt like a collaborator on the project. I'll withhold one star because we did have some communications issues setting things up in the beginning, and I can see how that might be a real problem for some people. But I'm glad I put up with that because the results are worth it. read more
