This is a great nursery! I have been buying and planting California native plants for at least 40 years and this is tied for the top 2 nurseries in the state. The other nursery is located near me in Central California. East Bay Wilds is over 200 miles away from me. I only wish I could have discovered them sooner! Pete is great, the staff is great, the selections are great, and the prices are great. Don't tell Pete, but I would pay more for plants from this nursery.

came here with my kids one sunday afternoon and he said something that caught me a little bit off guard, he said: "you have no idea what this neighborhood looked like before me." i think his name was Pete. it seems his view of Fruitvale in a nutshell, it would seem, which is sad, cause its a really great neighborhood that has been that way for sometime, definitely some time before him. at this point i decided I no longer wanted to support a business such as this and left with the kids in tow to go find another place that sells weeds. alas, there aren't, and in the end, who cares. a vital place to be part of the gentrifying experience, i suppose. one other criticism: by appointment only so he doesnt have to deal with any of the people actually living IN the neighborhood. see folks flock from the safety of the hills for discount shrubs and itll really make you believe the owner means it when he says this neighborhood sucked before him.

Awesome selection of CA natives! Check hours before you go! I picked up a wonderful array of sages and other plants! Can't wait to go back.

Happy plants (nice native ones), a dog or two snoozing in the sun, and very helpful, efficient, and friendly staff.

I reached out to Pete because I received a grant to plant native plants in a nearby patch of dirt.

I approached him and said, "I don't know much about gardening and I have a feeling you do! So I'm wondering if you could help me. I have hydrophobic soil, and my lawn is patchy." He said, "Well you shouldda used compost." I said, "Let's try again, and not start with 'you shouldda.'" I smiled and continued, "We had the seed put in in October, and they used compost. We will be reseeding and re-composting in the fall..." He interrupted and said, "Well I have some advice if you would LISTEN." I said, "I'm listening." He said, "I have some fertilizer with soil conditioner." I said, "Well, I used soil conditioner yesterday." I never raised my voice or took an attitude with him. I just said, "You have expertise, right? And I respect your expertise. Well, I also have expertise, in another field, and when people come to me for advice, I don't speak to them this way. So I'm going to leave now. Have a nice day." My grown son was with me. I asked him, "Am I crazy or was that man very rude?" My son said he couldn't believe the way Greg spoke to me. I looked him up afterward to be sure I wasn't naming the wrong person. It was the owner, Greg Dupuich. I will not be returning to this nursery, and I would not recommend going there as a woman. I have a feeling he would not have spoken to a man this way. Greg did not bother to take the time to understand my problem or ask basic diagnostic questions. When I got home I looked up some examples of questions a helpful specialist could have asked: -What is your soil type? -How deep down is the soil dry? -How old is the lawn? -Have you added any bark, mulch, or compost recently? -Have you tried using a liquid wetting agent or aerator yet? -Are you looking to buy a tool to fix this, or a chemical/soil product? Those are the kinds of questions a skilled, knowledgeable person would ask, and I would have appreciated it if he had taken the time. Beautiful nursery, but I will take my business elsewhere.

Extraordinary service, care, and plants…read more I heard about this place from my co-worker/friend, who developed a large nursery during the pandemic. She had devoted a large amount of social media content for the new plants that she acquired, particularly from local gardeners and nurseries. After commenting on a couple, she knew I was very intrigued by this Tender Gardener, from whom she made many nice purchases from. During my birthday, she and another colleague purchased a gift card for me. Shortly, I had spent a long time looking through the items they offered. Over the course of 3 months, I noticed they restock on a lot of items that sell out (means their business is doing many things right), and them carrying a lot of exotic items that I have never seen before. Their website also offers a lot of insightful articles that help customers make informed decisions and care for the precious pieces that they purchase. Another great thing about The Tender Gardener is that they offer free Friday deliveries, for purchases of over $30, for Oakland and San Francisco (and have since expanded). I ended up purchasing two plans (photos uploadeded) for a friend who recently purchased a home in Oakland. The purchase, delivery, and service was phenomenal.
