a view of a vegetable garden

SIX STARS for the sheer number of vareities of plants that you cannot find anywhere else locally. That alone makes this place truly special. That being said, the location is in a sketchy area of Oakland/San Leandro. In that neighborhood was a burned out car, and cars with broken windows along the street. My friend who was supposed to meet me there refused to park on the street and there was no space in the small parking lot at the nursery which seemed to be filled up with employee's cars (I was the only customer at the time). The nursery cannot help what's going on outside their nursery, but you should plan not to leave anything valuable in your car. The nursery has its heart in the right place. They are building and doing some great things here. My main concern was the amount of weeds everywhere - on the ground and in the plant pots. Also they need more signage. I was unable to find everything. If you are looking for a typical retail nursery, this is not it. This is more like a hunt for exotic plants. So bring your adventurous side. Staff is very helpful in finding things if you ask. You also may be relieved to have a different sort of experience than a retail nursery - they are propagating their own plants here and that's a different feeling than a place that buys and resells others' plants. I had to drive very far (1.5 hours) from my house to get here, and I think I will save the trip and just order online in the future. I truly love what they offer, I just wish the in-person experience could be easier.

4 mountain papayas received from first order

On 12/19/22, I placed an online order for 4 Jamie Mountain Papaya. On 12/23/22, I received the first order which was 4 plants with no leaves; I could see the start of some leaves buds and I thought I might be able to nurse the plants to health. I sent email to Planting Justice explaining I was only able to nurse 2 plants to health. I just got email from Planting Justice indicating they were sending me 2 replacement plants with leaves. I would suggest to order Mountain Papaya after winter.

This organic nursery is run by Planting Justice, maybe you've heard of them? (http://plantingjustice.org/) Rolling River sells all kinds of fruit trees, shrubs, veggie and herb plants etc. I stole this description from their webpage, because it sums up everything that is great about this place: "We grow and care for our plants using practices that are people, animal and environmentally friendly and safe. We use natural fertilizers, hand weeding, and ducks and chickens as well as other organic pest controls, instead of the harsh chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, commonly used in the conventional nursery trade. Rolling River Nursery is committed to providing a healthy working environment and promoting sustainability, while producing high quality plants which will thrive and grow well. We are also pleased to be one of the few nurseries to offer organic nursery stock at this time." It's not a fancy place at all, the neighborhood is kind of shady, but the nursery is amazing! The people there really know what they are doing, they are passionate and friendly and so very happy to help you. It was a delight to get our fruit trees there and I am sure we will be back often - whenever we need plants or trees. A great place to give your $$ to, no question!

Messiah was very patient all the while juggling other calls for his attention. He represents BGR very well. He had ideas on how I could transport the items in my truck as that was a concern I had. He also helped me with selecting bark for my garden and the amount needed. I definitely will be back once I measure and get all the needed info. Thank you Messiah BGR is lucky to have you represent them. You were confident in explaining the products and you listening to what I was trying to accomplish in my yard and offered me a reasonably priced solution. I want to note that when I originally walked into to business the two women working the counters were less than friendly. I was actually going to leave. Glad I stuck around.

Some of their products like M.O.A.B (Mother Of All Blooms), "I asked can I use this on other plants?" Sure Absolutely go for it, just follow the instructions on the product label. Oh My Gentle Jesus I did, and what a difference. All of my flowers went from blooming beautifully, to you could hear the plants acting like 5 yr olds jumping up and down yelling LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!! Il had an an azalea that hadn't flowered in 5 years, well she's blooming now. I also got a real education on pH-ing the water for cannabis, and I transferred that knowledge to my other plants. I'm so into pH-ing that I pH my chicken and ducks water. These guys deal with serious growers, but they also deal with wannabe serious growers like myself. The other thing I like about the place is it's not like going to an understaffed nursery where you have to track someone down to get information. They are right there and will give you the time necessary to get your job done right. And lastly this is icing on the cake, some of the best prices on soil. And good soil, not Miracle let's throw some glyphosate into the mix while nobody's looking Grow stuff. We're talking Fox Farm, Organic Roots to name a few. Even if you're not into growing cannabis, you should still check them out if you're really serious about growing plants in general.

While they offer an incredible selection of healthy, beautiful plants, what they really provide is so much more than that. The atmosphere is peaceful, welcoming, and uplifting. It's a place where people can slow down, connect, learn, and simply enjoy being surrounded by nature. The staff are knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely passionate about helping customers succeed. They take the time to explain proper plant care and share tips that help your plants thrive long after you bring them home. I especially appreciate the community events and educational opportunities they offer. They have created a gathering space that encourages learning, connection, and a deeper appreciation for plants and the natural world. I'm grateful this wonderful business is still here, thriving and serving our community. In a world that often feels rushed and impersonal, this shop offers a little oasis of beauty, peace, and kindness. Supporting local businesses like this is easy when they bring so much value to the people around them. Highly recommended!
