This was the first experience that my wife and I have had whale watching. We decided to arrange a…read moretrip with Western Prince and stay on San Juan Island for a couple of nights in conjunction with it. Our guide was Allison on the boat piloted by Captain Ivan. They offered gear for the trip, including weather bibs, jacket, gloves and knitted caps, which were definitely needed for the trip. Allison provided excellent information on the wildlife in the area, of which we saw (and heard in many cases) sea lions, a sea otter, a blue heron, bald eagle, and of course, whales. Captain Ivan provided a great deal of information to our tour also, describing the interface with other tours in the area, such as how they communicate sightings and limiting time in the area in concern for the wildlife. Several aspects of the experience stood out to me: -Everyone was very welcoming, making sure everyone was prepared for the trip (gear, preparation for limited restroom access, safety, etc.) -The boat is an open design, with nearly 360-degree views, with the seating being bench style seats for very comfortable for the approximate 3-hour tour. Viewing other tour boats in the area, I was glad we chose Western Prince if only for the boat environment/atmosphere alone. -The size of the tour was approximately 20 people, which made the tour more personal. -Captain Ivan demonstrated his experience with tracking the behavior of the pod that had been sighted, with the final surfacing of the family (Orcas) approximately 75 feet from the bow on the port side of the boat, which he had only minutes prior had killed the engine expecting them to show, which they did. He didn't "chase" the whales and location, he just acted on his knowledge of their behavior to position the tour accordingly. Also, a lone sea otter had been spotted in the area recently, and as we headed back to port, he recognized him playing near a buoy, and we slowed down to watch him for a little bit. It was very impressive. -Allison demonstrated her knowledge and experience describing the behavior and environment of the wildlife. Her longevity with the company demonstrated her commitment to share and inform others of this amazing area of the world. I really can't say enough good things about the experience.

Plan accordingly. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ Outdoor adventures keeps the guided groups small (maximum 12 people). I appreciate the small groups since this was my first time kayaking. Three types of kayaks are available: single, double or triple occupancy. Discover is an accepted form of payment. A Discover Pass is required to park at Spencer Spit. If you do not have a pass, a $10 day pass can be purchased with cash or check. There were several rangers checking passes on our visit so be sure to have a pass visibly displayed to avoid being ticketed. WHAT TO BRING - Signed Release of Liability - Bathing suit or non-cotton under layers preferred - A synthetic shirt (capilene, polypro, Under Armor, etc) - Shorts or pants made of a synthetic material (may get wet/damp) - Lightweight fleece jacket or windbreaker/rain jacket to provide warmth - Water shoes or sandals that strap on (or shoes that can get wet) - Sun hat and/or sunglasses - Sunscreen and chapstick - Water bottle - Optional; Camera, Plastic bag for wet items and change of clothing - If you have a gift certificate or prepaid voucher (such as Groupon) please bring a printed copy with you! Dorito Dan was our guide for the day. Dan was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The first hour is dedicated to introductions, procedures and safety. Be sure to use the restroom before departing. Once on the water, there is no turning back. Kayaking is great for teamwork and communication. Both are required to avoid frustration. I recommend wearing weight-lifting/bicycle gloves in order to prevent blisters. Each person in our group started getting blisters towards the end of the tour. During our 3 mile kayaking trip, we spotted starfish, seals and majestic bald eagles. Thank you Outdoor Adventures for providing a magnificent day of play while surrounded by gorgeous Mother Nature. We all plan to return in the near future for another go-around.

Our…read moreguide, Scooter, was so friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating--he made sure all 7 of us (with mixed levels of experience) felt included and comfortable the entire time. The planning was spot on, with tides and conditions perfectly timed so everything went smoothly and safely. The camping setup was better than I've ever had--super comfy sleeping bags and pads, I honestly slept better than I do at home! The food was a huge highlight too--fresh ingredients, delicious meals like peanut Thai curry and veggie burritos, and great breakfasts every day. Way beyond our expectations for "camp food." Scooter was constantly checking in, sharing his knowledge of the area, tides, and wildlife, and making sure we had everything we needed. We saw seals, bald eagles, porpoises, salmon jumping right next to our boat, and so many birds. Even though we didn't see whales, the scenery was stunning. Private islands, amazing campsites, and unforgettable sunrises and sunsets over calm water. The whole trip was well-organized, from the packing checklist to the quality equipment. I'd recommend bringing a small dry bag for essentials in the kayak. Overall, this trip is perfect for anyone; families, couples, or groups of friends. We left with amazing memories and can't recommend Sea Kayak and Scooter enough!

My nephew and I did the bioluminescence night tour and it was the most incredible kayaking adventure I have ever done!! Our tour guides were wonderful! (Heather and Liam I believe) Everyone was so friendly and put all kayaking levels as ease! We went on a night where the moon was very minimal, there were shooting stars and the bioluminescence was particularly bright!! It was incredible!! Worth every penny! Looked like bright blue glitter when you touched the water! Dress to the weather (it was a bit chilly) so we had our rain jackets and a regular jacket on, they provided the kayak, paddles, life jackets and spray skirts (keeps your legs from getting wet.) Wear shoes that can go in the water as you will get them wet when getting in and out of the kayak (We wore crocs and that was fine). You will need a head lamp that you can either bring your own or rent. If you are on the fence just do it!! It was such a magical experience!!
