Absolutely the best repair shop I have ever worked with. Fast, efficient, skilled and VERY reasonably priced.

    Big Island Car Care

I don't normally write reviews, but Big Island Car Care in Kona--and especially James--deserves…read moreevery word of this. I inherited my uncle's Tacoma after he passed away. For months, I researched and asked family and friends for recommendations for transmission repair. I got the same answers: No one knew of anyone that was skilled, reputable and honest. I almost gave up, but the Tacoma was my Uncle's pride and joy. He never spent money on himself so we were surprised when he proudly came home with his Tacoma. After breaking down while coming home from work, he tried to get the truck running with the help of friends for a year, but the transmission was the problem. By the time the Tacoma was towed from Waimea to Big Island Car Care, the truck had a long list of issues, and honestly, I wasn't sure if it would ever be on the road again. I just knew I needed to get it fixed as my uncle wanted. From the very beginning, James treated the situation with concern, patience, honesty, and a level of care you just don't see in business anymore. He spent countless hours troubleshooting problems--some of which weren't obvious at all--called Toyota multiple times, spent hours on the phone, and kept me updated the entire time. The transmission took some time because parts weren't available on island or he was researching/gathering information to resolve the laundry list of issues that came with the truck. He didn't give up, stood by his word, and never changed the quoted price, even though it took more hours and time than was initially expected. I was off-island for most of the process, and yet I felt completely safe leaving the truck in his hands. That level of trust is rare. By the time everything was finished, it didn't feel like I was dealing with a shop--it genuinely felt like I was dealing with family. James and his wife Sylvie (who owns Big Island Upholstery that's connected to the shop) always greeted me with hugs and smiles. It felt like we knew them for years! James went above and beyond in every sense. He understood what the truck meant to me and treated it with the same respect. When I finally got the Tacoma back, running smoothly after so long, I was in shock. I didn't think it would be running again. My uncle would be so happy. And that's because of James. I don't say this lightly: I don't think I've ever met anyone in business that I trust the way I trust him. Not only is he an incredibly skilled mechanic, he's one of those rare people you wish to come across in life --honest, thoughtful, and genuinely good. I will forever be grateful to James and Big Island Car Care. P.S. James recently opened a repair shop minutes away from Big Island Care Care, called Apollo Auto Repair. Please go check him out there too!

Came here to get a head gasket job done. Was quoted $2200…read more Owner suggested we also do a few other things while we were in there and we agreed. Price went up to $2500 Then they found other parts that needed replacement. Ok, we're just below 3,000 Suddenly the bill is over $4900 when we go to pick the car up. Jeremy claims there was additional things they found wrong and that he notified us. (he didn't and these new charges were a surprise) As we start going through the bill, we notice we're being charged for labor and parts that should have been included in the original price for the head gasket. Then, the additional parts are priced at 2-3x what they should be with outrageous labor charges. ($200 in labor to replace a thermostat which takes 10 minutes to remove 2 bolts.) Owner refuses to release the vehicle unless we pay and we have a bunch of back and forth where he starts dropping the price but still wants to charge stupid labor charges and more. Then he pulls up high prices on the computer to justify his high costs. Same parts I found for 1/2 to 1/3 the price. Now we also discover they didn't put certain parts back on the vehicle when they finished and there is a missing exhaust cover. So not only do they overcharge the work is sloppy. I cannot recommend this shop at all. They don't honor their quotes, jack up the price of parts then refuse to release your vehicle until you pay. 0 stars if I could.
