    Fresh House Platter - Delicious!
    Caryn M.

Ordered takeout from East Main Fish & Chips and it was phenomenal. I ordered both a seafood platter which had a great amount of fried fish, shrimp, scallops, calamari and fries. Everything tasted super fresh and even though I had it delivered, it was still hot and crispy. The oxtail platter had a great portion of meat as well, seasoned perfectly. I will definitely be ordering from this restaurant more often. Yum!

Super tasty jerk pork. I started getting extra cabbage (+ $1) because they're great together and I run out otherwise.

Great little place. Very clean, generous portions of very good food, reasonable prices. A wide variety of folks enjoying the food - from young to old, from local to visitors. The only ding I give is in regard to the "service" at the table, though it's not a criticism of the woman who waited on us. It's just kind of clear that the primary focus is carry out business. It wasn't clear if anyone would wait on us or we should go to the counter and order. When I asked, the person working there didn't seem to have a clear preference (instead of saying, oh please sit and I will take care of you). The fish and chips hot the highest rating in our group. The ribs were good but a bit fatty. Jerk pork very good. We will definitely return.

Today I stopped by East Main Fish and Chips. This was my first time visiting. I noticed that they had a fish and chips special on Mondays, so thats what I ordered. They had my fish and chips to go order ready in 10 minutes. Service was friendly, prompt and efficient. When I got home I was pleasantly supprised. There was a generous amount of fish and chips, coleslaw, and tarter sauce, and a lot of the scarce packets of ketchup, and a beautiful looking quarter slice of lemon. Looked really good. The taste met me expectations as the meal was very delicious and hot! Would I go back, absolutely! Its not a fancy restaurant, but who cares when the food is good, the prices reasonable and I'm ordering takeout.

Came here today after a few months & will not be coming back. The food was not seasoned well at all & my oxtail was ALL fat! Completely ruined my appetite. I only got to eat my sides. Absolutely ridiculous.

As I stood on the sidewalk, waiting to receive my food, several other groups of people walked up, place their orders, and receive their food before me. I noticed that the cook who was working inside the food truck repeatedly pointing me out to his companion, and indicating that I needed to be served. None-the-less, my order was not called until the three couples behind me had received their order. When my name finally was called, and I walked up to the window to take my order, the gentleman taking orders immediately told me that I owed him five dollars. I informed him that I had already paid him, to which his response was "Me? Oh, you didn't pay me!" I had, in fact, paid him immediate;y upon placing the order, as previously stated. I reminded him that I had paid earlier, which he continued to deny, very rudely I might add. I even when so far as to check my pocket for the five dollar been I had been carrying when I placed my order... Just to make sure I didn't still have it. It was gone, as I had indeed given it to the gentleman in question when I placed my order. I received no apology from the man at the window, no did he offer me a refund. However, because I prefer to set a precedent that is beyond reproach, I told the gentleman he could keep my money and the food, and walked away, five dollar out, and hungry. My suspicion is that the gentleman working the window was being discriminatory. I an an LGBT student at Wesleyan University (the truck was on campus that night), and I am gay in a way that is one might describe as "overt." The man working the order window was clearly uncomfortable serving me, and as a result he all but refused to do so, until the gentleman he was working with insisted he give me my food. I also feel that he either forgot I had paid him (because he took so long to give me my food in the first place), or simply felt that he had the right to give me a hard time. I would never again patronize this business, and encourage others not to do so either. It was a terrible experience, and jarring to say the least.

It was most unusual that our party of four all ordered the same. We started with a special app - Fried Shrimp & Calamari. Soo Delish! We followed with the signature dish, Cod Fish & Chips. I have had this entree in, I'd estimate, 50 restaurants, including several in England where I think it originated. NONE even come close to here! Oh My - the two big, thick pieces of lightly battered fresh cod fried to perfection! Flaky, moist and delectable. It just doesn't get any better! Wow! The fresh, hand-cut thick fries were again fried to perfection. Golden crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. I don't know what their secret frying technique is or the type of oil they use but the flavor is light and delicious. Even their homemade coleslaw tastes like they just made it - so fresh with a little tang - Mmm! We ended with a very unique lemon flan, even though we all said we couldn't eat another thing. Overall, portions are generous (we took home some left overs!), service staff were friendly and attentive, and the Owner & Head Chef, Elmer came out to check on us and tell us some of his culinary encounters with blue fin tuna. The meal comes with french fries or onion rings. I ordered the french fries regular, though sweet potato fries were an option, Service was attentive, and with a smile, Our sodas arrived quickly after the order was placed. Within 10 minutes, our meals arrived! I received a generous portion of whole belly clams, but the clams were on the small side, and it seemed like there were clam strips in with the order. I wasn't ready to see so many strips. Lightly fried to a golden brown, , the batter was on point, seasoned perfectly The whole belly clams seemed like they were missing something tonight, I didn't really taste the ocean or that nice sea flavor in them. They were just OK. But whole bellies are whole bellies and I've never had a bad whole belly. So two whole belly meals with two sodas were $75 and change. I left $90 and change, including the tip. I love coming here as Sam the Clams is just a real honest place, not pretentious ore bougie. It's more blue collar hard hitting, with real good food. Thanks again, Sam the Clam's, see you soon!

So, since the Old Saybrook location closed, we set our sights on visiting the Niantic location, looking forward to what we missed so much. Sadly, this was one of the worst experiences we have had! Our order consisted of a kid's hot dog platter, an adult hot dog, side of onion rings, 2 small coleslaws and a side of clam strips. Let's begin with the hot dogs...Both the kids and adult hot dogs were the same size in different buns. The adult in a foot long bun and the kids in a regular bun. Again, same size hot dog inside. Moving on to the onion rings...for $7.00, I counted 19 shoestring onion rings. Not a nice pile, but flatly 19 and shoestring ones are incredibly deliciously thin. The kids platter arrived with just the hot dog on it. No fries. When I went back, I was told it did not come with fries. I disagreed and after some time, curly fries were placed next to the hot dog. I asked about regular fries and I was told that they did not carry regular ones. The nice boy behind this all stated that they did and it was corrected. Hot dog was now ice cold. My side of clam strips for $14 consisted of maybe a cup of clams. Sad portion! We ate what we could shaking our heads in disappointment. So sad our expectations were dashed! When we left, it was decided that a short walk (and I mean short because my mother can't balance for long) might be nice in order to forget the fiasco at the restaurant. As soon as we stepped away from the car, we were chased by their parking guard who said that we could no longer park there if we left the car. I explained that we had just spent almost $70 in their establishment and would be taking a short walk. She continued to chase us. We kept walking. Our walk took approximately 7 minutes. Upon our return, the man parked next to us entered his car with 2 bags and coffees from Sift Bakery. Obviously NOT a Skippers customer, yet he was not chased! So, sadly, we will NEVER again be visiting Skippers in Niantic. Johnny Ad's is meh, but this was way worse. I hope that they can fix things so that others can still enjoy eating there.
