East Main Fish & Chips has become a regular in our takeout rotation! Our kids love the chicken fingers, everyone loves the fish and chips (the fish is always super fresh, and we're picky!), and my husband and I LOVE the jerk chicken platter. It's spicy enough to clear your sinuses but not so bad that you can't taste the delicious flavor, which is perfect in my book. And the chicken is falling off the bone tender. We're obsessed with it! All the sides are delicious too - don't skip the plantains or cabbage. We appreciate the deals on different days of the week, the large portion sizes, and the fact that they deliver (at least ordering through here). If you grew up in a family that did fish & chips on Friday nights from the local fish fry, this is that same kind of place - nothing fancy, just good fried food - but with a bunch of delicious Jamaican food as a bonus. My only minor complaint is I wish they could use something besides styrofoam takeout containers (but it may be the best option when you're serving up this kind of rib-sticking fried amazingness - I don't know). read more

Ordered takeout from East Main Fish & Chips and it was phenomenal. I ordered both a seafood platter which had a great amount of fried fish, shrimp, scallops, calamari and fries. Everything tasted super fresh and even though I had it delivered, it was still hot and crispy. The oxtail platter had a great portion of meat as well, seasoned perfectly. Great little place. Very clean, generous portions of very good food, reasonable prices. A wide variety of folks enjoying the food - from young to old, from local to visitors. The only ding I give is in regard to the "service" at the table, though it's not a criticism of the woman who waited on us. It's just kind of clear that the primary focus is carry out business. It wasn't clear if anyone would wait on us or we should go to the counter and order. When I asked, the person working there didn't seem to have a clear preference (instead of saying, oh please sit and I will take care of you). The fish and chips hot the highest rating in our group. Today I stopped by East Main Fish and Chips. This was my first time visiting. I noticed that they had a fish and chips special on Mondays, so thats what I ordered. They had my fish and chips to go order ready in 10 minutes. Service was friendly, prompt and efficient. When I got home I was pleasantly supprised. There was a generous amount of fish and chips, coleslaw, and tarter sauce, and a lot of the scarce packets of ketchup, and a beautiful looking quarter slice of lemon. Looked really good. The taste met me expectations as the meal was very delicious and hot! Would I go back, absolutely! The rating is based on a Jamaican assessing only the Jamaican part of the menu! Raised in Jamaica, I was dying for authentic Jamaican food within Middletown. My friend had ordered take out a few times and I've tried jerk chicken, brown stew chicken, curry chicken, rice and peas, steamed veg and plantains. Unfortunately, the jerk chicken is actually not jerk at all but rather similar to stew chicken and the curry chicken was sometimes under-cooked. However, the plantain was amazing, and the steamed veg, stew chicken and rice and peas were pretty authentic. Although, the rice and peas could use a bit more coconut milk. However, I finally got a chance to visit the restaurant and I can happily say that the service was very friendly and it's a casual restaurant to converse. Had some business in S Middletown a few days ago. Afterwards we were hungry. Yelp provided some suggestions and we decided to give this local spot a try. It was basic but clean, mainly take-out, but with a few booths inside. Tried the Fish and chips, and an order of jerk chicken. Wow, was the food good! Somebody in the kitchen really, really knows how to fry fish: the batter was light and there was not a hint of grease. And the fish tasted really fresh. The Jamaican food here is terrific! I thought I was going in for some fish and chips but then I saw the Jamaican menu and I decided to give it a shot. I had the Jamaican chicken curry which was both filling and satisfying. The chicken was really tender and fell right off the bone. As always the Jerk Pork was amazing. My husband gets this every time and can't seem to break away to try something else, all though he always says he wants to try the curry goat. The fish is excellent and is served with tarter sauce, lemon and coleslaw. The fish is Fresh and flaky and generally a good portion size (aside from one of our orders that had a tiny piece with 2 regular size pieces). The fries were way over cooked and tasted horrible. Not sure what happened this time but I ended up throwing ALL of them out because they were not good at all. I will update this review, once I've had a chance to dine in the restaurant. This review is based on my takeout experience only. After a change of dinner plans, I was left to fend for myself. I had been craving fish & chips, so I decided to give this place a try. I knew that I wanted to try the fish, but I also wanted to try a few other items on the menu. Unable to make my mind up, I decided on the House Platter. This platter included all of the fried goodies; shrimp, scallops, calamari and fish. Served with a humongous portion of fries. While at the counter picking up my dinner, I spied Jamaican Beef Patties. Of course, I had the nice woman add it to the bill. Yes, that's right, this is a fish & chips place that also serves Jamaican specialties. I grabbed my bag, that roughly weighed about 2 lbs, and headed home. My boys were almost through with their dinner, but that didn't stop them from snatching from my meal. I managed to grab the 2 fried shrimp, which were probably my favorite of the mix. The calamari came in second. I had to agree with my son, who chewed up, and then spit out the scallop. The texture was a little too soft for me. The biggest disappointment was the fish. Not the fish itself, which was firm and flaky. For me, it's all about breaking into that crunchy outer shell. This was like a saggy skin, barely attached to the fish. The fries were also not crispy. I only had a five minute drive home, but I also don't know how long the meal had been sitting there. So, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and I'll try dining in next time. read more

Growing up in the north end of Hartford I was exposes to several caribbean restaurants. Although the pricing wasn't bad the quality of food wasn't great. This is not real Jerk or real Ox tail. Don't know if they cook it on a drum. So that's why it tastes unseasoned or the dry rub was not proper. The portions are very very small for the prices. Ox Tail and Jerk were dry. Sides were not fresh. The drinks were expensive. Then the puffy stout looking chef or cook guy is always unpleasant. One time he walked over to my car to give me my takeout which I thought was nice but when I opened the container it had only five small pieces f chicken with lots of rice and plantains. Being exposed to a lot of Caribbean restaurants in New Haven, Hartford and NYC area, East Main Fish & Chips in Middletown is one of the WORST for oxtail, fish or jerk chicken. The meat portions on every occasion we ordered were insultingly small. Except for the plantains, the sides were missing that Jamaican seasoning. Last time we ordered, the jerk chicken and oxtail were mostly bones! The stout middle-age man in the back kitchen never smiled once when we ordered. He always has a disgruntled attitude when he checks out who is ordering. The cashier was very indifferent. They placed a cheap dirty plastic like shower curtain from the ceiling to guard the front counter due to cov19. They seemed focused on the pizza shop orders to get out, than their own customers. We feel sorry for those who work locally like Connecticut Valley Hospital etc. that frequent this musky air and filthy place. The whole place had an old 1990s grime style! Their prices for large take-out and beverages were very high (about $2.50 to $3 more than other places. We really do NOT know why there's any good reviews for this place. Ok. New to the area, so I ordered dinner. We took a chance since the menu had something interesting for each of us. Fried fish, Caribbean and more.. what else could one ask for? I ordered the stewed beef and hubby ordered pepper steak. Both dinners came with rice and peas, steamed cabbage and fried plaintain. The meat on both dishes was cooked very well, not as seasoned as I am used to but very tender and juicy. The cabbage was cooked nicely, not too soft and not too hard, again very light on the seasoning/flavor. Rice...well, can you say left over? Plantains were perfect according to my guys, I don't eat them so I cannot comment on them. The delivery was surprisingly fast. For what this place is...a small fish and chips establishment, I cannot complain. This place took the previous Jerk Fish right next to Big Daddy's Laundromat. Simple place with an area to dine in if you wish. The owners were very friendly. We ate here for lunch today. We ordered the Fish and Chips platter and the fried scallop platter. The Fish and Chip platter was reasonably priced at 10.95. The dish had 3-4 large pieces of lightly battered white fish that was VERY fresh. You can tell it was not frozen and was prepared to order. The batter was perfect and not over powering. The fish itself was pearly white, buttery and flaky, the way any dense white fish like Cod should be. It came with fries which was your standard steak cut fries and coleslaw. The scallop roll platter had about 6 medium sized sea scallops on a split top hot dog bun. Again the scallops were fresh, pearly white and fall apart tender. The bun could have been buttered and toasted like that of a lobster roll, I guess that is just the NE girl in me. This meal also came with french fries and coleslaw but I had substituted the fries for onion rings- again I suspect frozen onion rings. Although most of their food is deep fried, the flavors are very clean and doesn't have that old oil taste that some places can have. There are plenty other choices on the menu as well such as beef ribs, pork ribs, and jerk chicken. Over all the experience was pleasantly surprising again for the type of establishment, price and location. Best fried fish anywhere. Flaky fish and perfect coating they must get the fry oil just right and the fish is really fresh. Jerk chicken was great, got a large and could not finish it And Brought it home and my wife devoured it. Sides are cooked just right. Cabbage is awesome as are the plantains. Beans and rice are seasoned well. Peppered steak Was tender and had just enough delicious gravy on it to make you want more. Awesome all around and the owners are really nice too! My husband came across this place a few times and asked me what I thought, I've been super apprehensive about trying a new place that does fish since I can be pretty picky. Well, last night my husband announced that he was ordering from here for himself and the children, and that I could add something or not. Okie Dokie then. We ordered fried clams strips, chicken fingers, clam chowder, and French fries for the children. My children usually whine over dinner "Too soggy, too spicy, too crunchy, etc.". Not last night, my kids determined the clam chowder to be one of the best they've ever had and I didn't hear a single complaint over anything at all. I ordered fish and chips. In my container came a fresh lemon wedge, 3 big pieces of battered fish, and a generous serving of chips/fries. Cutting into the fish revealed flaky moist white fish and the batter was crisp, the whole thing was very delicious. The French fries are thick, crisp, and were also very tasty. I give my meal and my children's meals 5 stars. My husband ordered clams and shrimp fra diavlo over linguini which he claimed was delicious. The fault with this dish was that the pasta was over cooked, therefore he ate all the clams and shrimp out but tossed away quite a bit of the pasta. He also ordered a Jamaican beef patty, I also tried a bite of this. He thought it was very good, I personally would rather cook up some frozen beef patties from the grocery store. My husband also ordered the pepper steak, claiming he would eat it for lunch the following day lol. I also tried a bite of this and omg! The peppers were succulent, the beef was so tender it melted in my mouth, and the rice and beans that came with it were phenomenal! I had to take a star off for the sub-par beef patty and over cooked pasta (I wish Yelp did half stars because then I would have only taken off the half a star instead of a whole one) but we will be ordering from here in the future. Went yesterday, 2/09 because I was craving fish and chips. The fish was just ok. No seasonings in the batter at all, and after all, cod fish is virtually tasteless.
