Two years later since my last visit and this place still is amazing! I got a lobster grilled cheese(market price) and it was delicious, good amount of lobster meat which tasted great! Cheese and bread were good! I asked if they add a tomato soup or something to go alongside it and they said they didn't however they threw in a free side of lobster bisque to dip the grilled cheese in! That lobster bisque was very creamy and paired really well with the sandwich. Afterwards they even threw in a free chocolate ice cream when we finished! That was the S tier customer service and easily gets me to be a repeat customer! Definitely worth checking this spot out. Oh how we missed Skippers in Old Saybrook, CT!! We even placed it better than Johnny Ad's, a viable competitor. So, since the Old Saybrook location closed, we set our sights on visiting the Niantic location, looking forward to what we missed so much. Sadly, this was one of the worst experiences we have had! Our order consisted of a kid's hot dog platter, an adult hot dog, side of onion rings, 2 small coleslaws and a side of clam strips. Let's begin with the hot dogs...Both the kids and adult hot dogs were the same size in different buns. The adult in a foot long bun and the kids in a regular bun. Again, same size hot dog inside. Moving on to the onion rings...for $7.00, I counted 19 shoestring onion rings. Not a nice pile, but flatly 19 and shoestring ones are incredibly deliciously thin. The kids platter arrived with just the hot dog on it. No fries. When I went back, I was told it did not come with fries. I disagreed and after some time, curly fries were placed next to the hot dog. I asked about regular fries and I was told that they did not carry regular ones. The nice boy behind this all stated that they did and it was corrected. Hot dog was now ice cold. My side of clam strips for $14 consisted of maybe a cup of clams. Sad portion! We ate what we could shaking our heads in disappointment. So sad our expectations were dashed! When we left, it was decided that a short walk (and I mean short because my mother can't balance for long) might be nice in order to forget the fiasco at the restaurant. As soon as we stepped away from the car, we were chased by their parking guard who said that we could no longer park there if we left the car. I explained that we had just spent almost $70 in their establishment and would be taking a short walk. She continued to chase us. We kept walking. Our walk took approximately 7 minutes. Upon our return, the man parked next to us entered his car with 2 bags and coffees from Sift Bakery. Obviously NOT a Skippers customer, yet he was not chased! So, sadly, we will NEVER again be visiting Skippers in Niantic. Johnny Ad's is meh, but this was way worse. I hope that they can fix things so that others can still enjoy eating there. read more

Skipper's is a Niantic food staple. We love that they are open year round as a good clam roll in January can't be beat. Food is fried perfectly and not too greasy. Even their Mac and Cheese is tasty and often on our order. They have many non-seafood options to make sure there's something for everyone. I was able to enjoy the outdoors on a warm fall day. I ordered the lobster bisque which was not overly thick, which I like. My only complaint was that it only had two small chunks of lobster in it. The taste was delicious though. The clam strip roll had a decent amount of clam strips inside of a buttered roll. We have been coming here for 30 years. We made our first 2026 visit this past weekend and its obvious they have changed owners. Beware as the food is no longer up to par. Before it was fresh and melted in your mouth. Now its frozen, rubbery and unappetizing. Plus they are overpriced with smaller portions now. They claim they have not changed owners but for the people who have been coming here for decades, it's obvious. Besides the low quality food, the facility, menu, etc. have also changed. We paid $100 for 3 cheeseburgers, 2 sides of fries (which consisted of MAYBE 25 fries between the two), clam strip dinner and 3 drinks. My husband is not picky when it comes to food and he said it was hard to eat the burger because of how much oil was on the bun. The side of fries was a HUGE disappointment and the coleslaw tasted bitter/sour. It may have been bad or maybe the oil was old because my stomach has been very upset an hour after eating there. Pulled up in the hot rod, on this beautiful Tuesday. After checking out the menu, I placed my order for a fish sandwich, with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce, an order of onion rings, and a regular sized Coca-Cola. The young lady who took my order was polite, smiling, and knew the menu well. The total for these three items was a little bit pricey and just under $19. The onion rings were on point, seasoned well, with a generous portion The soda was ice cold, and not totally loaded with ice cubes. Now for the fish sandwich. There really wasn't much taste to it, and it tasted a little watery. Almost like it was frozen, not fresh. This is not the Skippers I knew from previous visits. I know it's early in the year, but please, no frozen fish when you are overlooking Long Island sound. The restaurant was clean, the bathrooms were fairly clean, and the rap music playing was awful accompanying my seafood lunch. Skippers, I will give you another try later this summer. We have been going to Skipper's for years and the food has always been good and a decent portion. We just went back for the first time this year and were VERY disappointed. We ordered fish and chips. They brought it out to us plated on a small metal tray the size of a small frozen dinner. At first I thought they were bringing us the wrong meal because the fish was several small pieces the size of a chicken tenders. They also were also very skimpy on the fries. If this is going to be the new normal for serving sizes they need to update the photos on their website. read more

Great view of beach and fun place to watch trains go by! Ample parking in their small lot during an offseason time. We got the captains platter. Easily ordered on the app with a discount. A good mix of seafood with several large shrimp, two big fillet of cod, clam bellies, and sweet scallops. Batter was fine and didn't seem as thick as what other reviewers reported. Skipper's is a nice place for a fast-casual meal right by the water. It's so cool that the train goes by too! We enjoyed the clam strips, hot lobster roll, and fried scallops, which we don't see too often on menus! The lobster bisque had a different flavor than we were used to, and my fiancé randomly ordered Mac and cheese because he thought we should have another side, and it was more buttery than cheesy (but that's on him for ordering Mac and cheese from a seafood shack lol). Like every summer I like to explore the shoreline and eat in new places. This places is located in the middle of Niantic. The food was delicious and portions were very big. It's the quintessential roadside New England roadside eatery. Big deck outside with a lot of shade. Staff was super friendly. I was after fried shrimp. The menu said (7) so I thought to myself, I'll order another if I'm still hungry. To my surprise they were huge, butterflied shrimp. I opted for curly fries which were also perfect. Tourists Beware. Drove an hour to this place from Rocky Hill where I was doing some work and saw this place on Yelp. First off, the counter staff was very rude and extremely disrespectful. There was a girl and guy at the counter and at first I wasn't sure about eating here and I had a few questions about the menu and the guy at the register was so nonchalant about everything. It was like I was interrupting his conversation to another group of people. I asked if the fountain drinks were refillable he stated only the large, when I looked on the menu it only stated small and regular, so I asked, if he meant regular and he looked at me and rolled his eyes. It's a shame that the customer service was so bad because the food was very good, not great but good. If you work hard for your money then you should have to accept piss poor service from anyone that doesn't want to appreciate the people on the other side of the counter that pay for them to be there. Pretty disappointed with the food quality for the price. I am a New Englander and I expect good quality fried Cod. Unfortunately didn't get it here at Skippers. I thought we would try this place because of the good reviews. I guess a lot of people who are not as passionate about high quality seafood gave reviews. Normally go to Lenny & Joe's or Monkey Farm for really great seafood, whole belly clams, steamers, cod, etc. When I asked the girl if they had steamers, she said "what are steamers?" They have indoor seating and outdoor seating, the outdoor seating was a bit busy since it was such a nice day. Once we got a table outside, it was a pleasant light breezy wind and a look of the Niantic Bay! As far as food I was a bit disappointed that everything is fried. I got a seafood salad roll and clam chowder. My friend got the Greek Salad. Now, they claim there is real lobster in the seafood salad roll, but it was only $6.99, shouldn't it cost much more if it's real lobster? And wouldn't "lobster" be part of the name? My suspicion tells me it's imitation lobster. It was still pretty tasty, with lettuce and it came with fries on the side. The Greek Salad was ok. It was a very generous size, but parts of it weren't the freshest. The Clam Chowder was pretty good, it was creamy, and had good substance to it. He was disappointed it didn't come with chips or anything especially for the price. In total with drinks and food the order came to over $30. Not terrible, but not great. I really wanted to love this place because it was very well decorated and so close to the sea. Boy did I pick the right place! The place smells heavenly right when you walk in. Friendly most young and very pleasant staff. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating options and they have high chairs which is always great in my book. I had the clam strips dinner which was about $20. It came with a huge portion of fried clam strips and French fries both of which were exceptional. I ate half and took a whole half of it home. The tartar sauce was outstanding - fresh and full of flavor. My husband had the fried scallop roll which he devoured. I tried a piece of one of the scallops (which I have never eaten before) and was surprised by how good it was! We got the grilled cheese kids meal for my daughter. We loved this place and we can't wait to go back next time we go to Niantic. We went shortly after opening and I'm glad we did because when we were heading out just after 12p it was getting very busy! read more
