A Pleasant Surprise in a New City. While aimlessly wandering through a new city, I stumbled upon this spot and figured, "Why not?" With only a handful of patrons inside, my skepticism was high, but the visit turned out to be a positive one. I started with a light crisp draft beer that hit the spot perfectly. For food, I only took appetizers...the roasted brussels sprouts and chicken wings. Both are what you would expect from typical bar fare - tasty, well-prepared and satisfying without blowing you away. Nothing extraordinary, but nothing disappointing either. The vibe is ideal for catching up with friends. The front outdoor patio sits right along side a busy street, yet the noise level stayed comfortable enough for easy conversation. It felt a bit quiet during my Monday afternoon visit on a public holiday, but I can easily see it being a lively and fun hangout on a weekend. Overall, this was a decent spot and a good find. I'm changing my review! I've now been to East Side Craft House plenty now because we love their trivia nights on Saturday and I've tried their wings again and had other menu items! The second time around wings were better than the first ie my first review! They were crispy, still juicy inside and sauced real well. I've also had their smash burger which has been my favourite meal so far, it's absolutely delicious!! The double patty double cheese with pickles and onions is like a gourmet fast food burger - it has everything you need! It comes with choice of curly fries or regular fries or a salad, always get the curlies they're really good! I also love their Cesars, always really tasty which I find can be hard to nail at restaurants - this one is really good! Service is good, sometimes a touch slow if it's a busy night but always super friendly. The Saturday night crowd is always buzzing because of trivia and it's a fun time all around. We were intrigued by this place for a while, always catching our eye while on the bus. After some drinks and nibbles, we decided to try the fried Brussels sprouts and spring rolls. Both were your typical pub fare--crispy and fried--but nothing really stood out. However, it was clear that the chicken wings are the star of the show here. Other tables were ordering them by the basket, drenched in different sauces, and they smelled irresistible--like food regret because we didn't get them ourselves! We tried the Kelp Stout and Two Morrows, which were fine if you're just after a basic beer. I met a bunch of friends here. It was Wing Wednesday and the place was packed. I got there a little late so I don't know if they had to wait for a table before I got there or if they had a reservation; there were some people waiting outside. Seating arrangements were cramped. The vibe is your standard neighbourhood pub. Our waitress was attentive despite how busy they were. The menu is basic pub food. Entree options for vegetarians are limited to the Impossible burger, but there are more vegetarian appetizers. The Impossible burger was good. I won't say it was totally not greasy but it wasn't TOO greasy. Scratched my burger itch. I ordered it with the side salad which was fresh. There's a good beer selection with something in pretty much every style and some kind of interesting stuff. My Container Brewing Nitro Stout was great. Came in for a quick drink. Was welcomed by some regulars & the Bartender Tommy was truly awesome! They didn't have champagne so she recommended the coconut margarita. (Taco Tuesday) I thought why not. I got it and was probably the best coconut margarita I've had in my life. I had 2. And 1 beef taco. Was juicy. & delicious. Prices were on point as well. No competition nearby, so East Side Craft House doesn't need to raise its game. It's wonderful to be the only pub/bar in the vicinity. It also helps if your pub/bar is attached to a liquor store, and across from a gas station. It also helps if your pub/bar is at a major intersection (Knight and 41st); you've got buses heading to/from UBC all day, all night. And you've got buses going to and from the downtown core and Richmond. So, East Side Craft House doesn't have to have the best prices, nor the largest selection of drinks and food, nor an upscale décor. All it has to do is just be there. So, the food menu is rather limited; most of the usual suspects, but don't expect a dozen different flavours for the chicken wings. Also, the 30+ craft beers on offer seems plenty, until you visit other places that have triple digit selections. Prices are merely okay, but I'd rather drive a little further down to Kingsway to get a larger burger platter for not much more at White Spot. On our most recent visit, our table was positioned at a right angle junction with another table which meant one of our group was elbow to elbow with a person from the other group. During COVID, this should be avoided. Bathrooms are upstairs, so if you gotta go, make sure your bladder can withstand the extra pressure of going up a flight of stairs. Overall, an okay pub/bar, but there are plenty of better options if you're willing to drive a little further. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday. Place was busy but our server did a great job of taking care of our table. I had the Caesar salad with Cajun chicken - it was delicious. Dog-Friendly spacious heated patio and great beer selection! Great big patio space! The patio is surrounded by bushes and trees so it doesn't feel like you are in the East side at all. There were also lots of room for me to lay down beside my humans while they eat. Staff was great! I was offered water as soon as we entered. They come out to the patio to take your order so I don't need to be left alone outside. While the patio is not covered, there are umbrellas for shade. There are also patio heaters but it wasn't on when we were there. Humans said the food is good for pub-style dining. Crispy chicken sandwich was moist and we appreciated the curly fries! I read an old review that said the owners' kids had taken over the pub. I met the owner last night, and he's the quintessential entitled prick you'd imagine someone who inherited the pub to be. I was there with four friends to watch the Canucks win game 6. A guy was sitting on a high-top stool and he kept standing up and blocking the view of the TV for everyone behind him every time the Canucks made a good pass or a good hit; I mean every time. I asked him not to stand up, and he said I could turn around and watch another TV if I didn't like it. Later, I went to the washroom, and when I returned, he started to lip me off and again said if I didn't like it too bad. Things began to get a little heated. The table full of 20-somethings next to him started to yell and berate us, saying he's the owner, he can do what he wants, shut up, or he'll kick you out. He's the owner, it's his bar, shut up. Then, an older man at his table came, sat uncomfortably close to me, and repeated the same thing. Shut up; he's the owner and can do what he wants. This absolute toad of a man sat there with a smug look on his stupid face as this group berated us. He approached us after the game and attempted a weak apology, saying he gets excited; after all, it's "his" game, and he hopes we return. He obviously didn't put in the hard work his parents did to build the business, or he'd take more pride in how he treated his customers. I'll never be back, and I hope this review makes at least one person decide not to go, either. read more

A nice place to have a few drinks and food with some friends. We came here for wing wednesday as we've been hitting up different locations. They have a few variety of flavours such as dry cajun, smokehouse bbq, etc. The size of the wings are average size, a little bigger than other places. The service was good but since it was wing wednesday, it took a little longer for the food to come out. The food is average. They do have a burger special on Mondays ( burger and beer for $12 ). There is also trivia night on Fridays. There are quite a few seats/tables here but it was busy as there arent too many pubs in the area. The closest one would be The Tipper or Cedar Cottage. I'm going to start off with full transparency: I'm not much of a pub food person and generally will not order salads, burgers, and sandwiches off a menu unless I have to because I can easily make delicious homemade ones at home (yes, I make fresh beef and turkey patties). Came here on Friday night for trivia and have been on a handful of occasions. Trivia night is always fun and my group of friends generally place so it's always a good time. Eastside Craft is a cozy pub to grab a drink and food with friends. Aside from trivia night I wouldn't go as I find the menu uninspiring aka full of limiting burgers, sandwiches, or salads options. My group ordered the potato skins, nachos, brussel sprouts, and yam fries for all to share. All the appies were decent. For the meal, I ordered the turkey cranberry sandwich with the tomato soup. The tomato soup wasn't the best but the turkey cranberry sandwich was pretty good! Still, for a pub I feel like Eastside's menu is pretty limited compared to a place like Firefighters Pub which also hosts trivia night on Friday's. Firefighters Pub menu is at least 6 pages vs 3 short pages at Eastside and though it also features pub food their menu at least offers much more variety of food to choose from and look forward to eating, especially for a person who doesn't love pub food like myself. Service is always decent at Eastside and the food is too but with recent trends of pubs to elevate their menu offerings, I find that Eastside is a bit behind in terms of variety and taste. Still, it's a cute spot to grab a drink with friends if you just want okay pub food, there's not many other drinking places around the same area to pick from. read more

If I could vote less I would. I just ordered their yam fries and chicken burger through Uber Eats. I'm not sure if it's Ubers issue... but from tracking it seems to have taken these guys almost two hours to make this order. Now it's a slow night, Tuesday after a long weekend. The fries and burger is so gross. Soaked in what tastes like the grease could even be 1000 years old, like it has a weird taste kinda grease. I'm appalled to be completely honest how gross this is. McDonald's makes better food , THATS HOW BAD IT IS. Beyond disappointed. I'm expecting possibly having food poisoning. End rant. read more

Parking is available in the back (5 or so spots), but I would recommend just parking directly on 41st or Knight. The interior is quite cozy, and has that neighbourhood pub feeling. They're renovated, though the washrooms are still as the same as before. As I was only here for beer, I cannot comment on the food. The beer was good, and the service was decent. The owners are a young couple taking over from parents and are very pleasant. However, the pub seems to be geared for younger people now the older owners are no more involved. The staff seem to have favorites and do not treat all guess with the same respect. The staff are younger and favor younger and more rowdy type of guest and fratanizing with their friends. And have no regard or respect for the older clientele. This includes military veterans as there use to be a few. It's not the same as when the parents managed, much friendlier and fair to customers not bullied by their staff as clearly the staff run the show now. The washroomsare upstairs and even from the stairs have an over powering stench of urine. Wether the drains or they just don't get cleaned regularly. Or the young just enjoy peeing everywhere as often the floors are sticky. Enjoy the climb if you have mobility issues. The stairs themselves seem a tad unsafe. There is a washroom on main but no one tells you it's behind a curtain marked staff only but it's storage. The bucket used for the floor sits full never cleaned with the mop inside rotting and stinking. This washroom is what kitchen staff use so makes you wonder about the kitchen. The food is average, although good it's not great. Better food could be done at home if one didn't want to go out. I miss the days when the owners mom was present and made soup. Long time since coming here from 2003 with longshoreman and guest relations personal from the piers of Canada place and Ballantyne. It's like a jungle now. The wings are usually over cooked and although taste good with such little meat they are over priced. Compliments to the stroganoff, absolutely awesome otherwise drink don't eat. Still miss the owners mom and the soups. What has changed since I started coming here in 2003 with my longshoreman friends from the piers. But, as saying goes out with the old in with the new but didn't expect the customers to be treated by staff, in this manner, perhaps the son wants to ruin business. Prime piece of property once inherited if not already! Good thing there is still army, airforce and navy club where vets and their guests do get respect and not disrespected by the young as they do here with certain staff. Liquor store are the best though, they at least treat everyone equally and fair and elders receive respect rightfully deserved. read more

So after attending trivia night and music bingo five years ago, I wrote that I would definitely be back. Well, I never did make it back, and I completely forgot about the place. I then discovered Friday night trivia at the Firefighters Pub (nearly three years ago, according to my Yelp review -- wow, time flies!), and I've been going ever since. While the Firefighters Pub was a bit dingy looking, and the service wasn't great, the location and time worked for me, and I always had a great time. In fact, I even made some friends through trivia at the Firefighters Pub (I met one of them on the first night I went), and three years later, we're still friends and play trivia together, as well as hangout outside of trivia. (I lied a little in my original review - I wrote that I went with friends, for simplicity, but they were acquaintances, people who I no longer hang out with, because they were flakey, or bitches. But the friends I play trivia with at the Firefighters Pub, both those that I met there and those that I knew before I started playing, are actual friends.) Anyway, my trivia friends wanted to try something new, so we went to East Side Craft House on Friday night. While it's a much nicer, more modern place, I have to say, I prefer the Firefighters Pub. First, ESCH is smaller and more popular than the Firefighters Pub, and they only do a limited number of reservations (so we were told), so we had to get there quite early (6pm for a 7:30pm start time) to ensure we could get a table that could accommodate our group of six (we were expecting a couple more people, but they couldn't make it). At the Firefighters Pub, even when busy, we can usually snag a table and we don't need to arrive that far in advance. Second, I did not like the trivia host (and I wasn't the only one). She was obnoxious, liked the sound of her own voice, and thought she was funnier than she was. And she was always making little jokes with the regulars, who were obnoxious too. I'm down with people laughing and having fun, and having inside jokes - cool, they have their thing. But the vibe I was getting was that THEY ruled the place and newcomers weren't made to feel welcome. Also, I find the trivia questions at Firefighters Pub (except for the music questions, which suck) a lot more interesting, and challenging. So while I'm not opposed to going to ESCH once in a while, the Firefighters Pub is more my cup of tea for trivia. I was debating on how to rate ESCH and was considering giving it three stars, as the nachos were really good (we went all out and got extra cheese, beef, and guacamole, and it was worth every penny), but, the red wine they served was CHILLED! WTH! So for that, I downgrade them to 2.5 stars, because, really, what the hell? And because you can't give half stars on Yelp, the 2.5 stars gets bumped down to two stars -- meh, I've experienced better. And yes I have, at the Firefighters Pub. I checked out this location while I was on business and I was there with coworkers. The bar is a bit small as we took most of the tables. The staff was very friendly and knew the menu. On our table we started off with Nachos, YAM Fries, Potato Skins and Spring rolls. All the appterizer were fresh and tasty, For the main dish I went with their Black Bean Burger made up of Oyster mushroom "bacon", house made cumin, black bean, and brown rice patty with red pepper hummus and guacamole with a side of Caesar Salad. I have to say the burger was quite good. The food was coming out at a slow pace, and I could imagine that they are not use to so many people waking in at the same time. We choose this place as they have Trivia Nights and we wanted a team building event. It was handled nicely by the staff as it was especially done for our office. The traffic is simply white noise, I can chat very comfortably without the fighting traffic sounds. Bathrooms are upstairs & clean, one must be able to negotiate the stairs though. The former Elephant Walk Pub was great. The current Eastside Craft House no longer functions like a neighbourhood pub but like a community social club where loud trivia games / bingo nights abound. Barely anyone uses the large patio in front of the pub, even on sunny days. Past sports clubs no long patronize because they are not valued. The current mother & son owners are not grateful for continued patronage of regulars. Note - alot of staff changes too. You are charged for refills on 'no fizzle' fountain drinks that are on tap. Coke/Pepsi are no more but RC Cola is substituted. Food is delicious, but portions are shrinking & patrons notice. Specialty food items have been eliminated. read more

The East Side Craft House is a decent place to grab a drink from a modest but well-chosen list of mostly local taps (including Parallel 49 and Howe Sound) while munching on standard pub fare. Located on E 41st Ave near Knight St, there's really nothing else around this area but houses. Which makes it, I suppose, a real neighborhood pub. Street parking is plentiful as there are no other business around (the adjoining liquor store is part of the restaurant). There's ample outdoor seating, although 41st Avenue traffic isn't the most soothing of sounds and sights. The atmosphere isn't any more interesting inside, except we decided to stay after spotting on the chalkboard some brews we'd been pursuing. Both the Parallel 49 Seed Spitter (watermelon) and Howe Sound Four Fruit were particularly refreshing for a warm summer evening, both regularly priced at $5-something. Friendly, relaxed service. Musical bingo was interesting. Fun, but the prizes not so great, I would think to promote your bar a lot more by giving away more gift certificates. Make people want to come back and have more. The wings were alright - but not great. Butter chicken sauce - wings just tasted like curry powder flavored chicken wings. Jerk Sauce - the wings tasted kind of lemony which I thought was weird, maybe it was just me? ~ hopefully it was just me. Honey Garlic - Was my favorite. Salt & Pepper - felt like it needed just a little more salt and pepper. I had the polar bear swim - cocktail drink which I enjoyed. I would like to think I'll return to this place for a bite, but I'm going to be honest and say probably not anytime soon.
