It's been quite a few years since I had been to the John B but I'm glad I had a chance to go back recently. I used to live in this neighbourhood so I was a frequent guest and I remember the food being really good back in the day. My friend and I decided to have a quick bite before seeing a movie and the John B was on the way to the theatre, so we stopped in for a quick meal. My friend had a beef dip with a side of "I Can't Believe They're Not Potato Skins" and I had an order of salt and pepper chicken wings. We both had a beer with our food and I was pleased to see they have quite a great beer selection. The patio is enclosed but felt very open and relaxing. Service was a little slow but they were pretty busy when we got there. Very friendly servers, too. Always nice to feel welcome when dining out. read more

Neighbourhood pub just SE of Austin and Blue Mountain. Parking is plentiful in the strip mall lot. The interior is typical British/Irish style. The seating area is actually not as large as it looks from the outside. Fortunately there is a covered (but not enclosed or heated) N facing patio, protected from the street by a pile of shrubbery. Staff are friendly and cheerful. No complaints. The beer pricing is in line with other similar establishments. Somewhat decent selection as well. I didn't try the food this time, but it looked pretty decent as well. Will try next time. read more

Returned on a Friday at 11:30 am when it opened in a group of four. And again there were people lined up to get in...they must be doing something right. They have a fairly large menu and after a quick review, I opted to stay with the John B burger and fries. It is a substantial burger with bacon, cheese and mushrooms. The taste and presentation of the burger was ok. I had a few of the fries then passed them on to another in our group. They were also just ok. There was no burger and beer special this day and our server advised there are no specials on Fridays. I was there to catch up with friends and the John B did provide this. There was no issue with the service but the food was nothing of note and with so many other dining options close by, I have no plans to return. read more

for $4 surprise IPA, Pilsner or Sour, you cannot go wrong for drinks on a thursday. i stopped here looking for dinner night of arrival in Vancouver and was pleasantly surprised with a wider variety of food options other than what is normally served at a local pub. the waitresses were so kind! although, be sure to expect to wait an extra 15 mins to order after getting your drinks on a super busy day like thursday's deal! the sub was delicious, slightly sweet with the balsamic reduction sauce and the pepperochini gives the italian deli style sub a great little kick. portions were well sized, not too large but still filling enough that i needed to take half home! highly recommend this place for people wanting a good place to catch up with friends or have a more casual yet quality date on the patio. Mr. Consistency. John B is a goto for classic pub interior, regulars at the bar, servers who know your name, a menu that is surprisingly robust and yet each item delivers. There's even a damn fireplace in the upper section to sit around. It's mellow vibes it's nostalgia it's awesome. Every other pub in Coquitlam fears it. The beer list has always been a point of pride and it should be - they have been consistently on the cutting edge of new craft beers before anyone else. 100% worth a visit. read more

So I have been raving to my coworkers about the food, so we came by yesterday for the happy hour. Was disappointed to see my wings looked over cooked. Tried one bite only to confirm they were over cooked. The waitress took them back, and the next plate came rather quickly but looked the same tried one bite and was not satisfied. So I ordered the crispy Mac and cheese to go only to realize that it was nothing like the one I have had before. I think they need to change the oil. I prefer to support pubs that support their community. Rotary programs support important causes in our community. One program is "The Perfect Pint" where Rotary sells $40.00 booklets of tickets to visit neighbourhood pubs with coupons for a complimentary pint. Good cause right? John B sponsored the program but would not honour their coupon when presented. Go figure! All other sponsoring pubs have honoured their coupons that support Rotary Programs. Just a local watering hole where the owners can count on a steady stream of regulars and new faces daily . Seems to me that maybe with all these regulars consistently supporting them they would trea tthem a little better. Heres a picture of a vegetarion snadwich that was served by them . When I inquired as to why if the Avocado was a meat replacement why was it so small ? And where were the sprouts ? She sympathized but then quickly looked and said o no there are sprouts !Then points at the ten visible LOFL ( I honestly couldn't find them .) **COVID-19 REOPENING REVIEW** **HAPPY HOUR REVIEW** The hubs and I were searching for a good happy hour around the area we were at on a September Saturday, and we stumbled upon this place. We confirmed via phone call that HH is on until 6pm daily and off we drive! Customer service: We arrived at the pub around 5:02pm. We were asked for our contact information and away we were seated in the upper landing area. There are some printed communal menus while the entire menu is updated online. The server came by quite promptly and asked if we are ready with our order. I ordered a double gin and soda ($7) and The Hubs ordered a 6oz house wine ($5.50) and a BBQ chicken flatbread ($10); and then later followed by another double highball with a calamari order ($10). Speed of delivery for the drinks were efficient and accurate. Didn't skim on the volume! The server appeared to be less personable with us Asians, but it don't matter to us...we are used to it when we lived in smaller towns. Atmosphere: I'm so in love with the bar's pale gold and mirrors design. It reminds me of some good ol' fashion Vegas bars that I loved. The crowd reminds me of some BC small towns that I used to live. There are plenty of TV's everywhere to enjoy all kinds of sporting events. The tables are adequately spaced out and we felt comfortable in the seating arrangements. Kitchen service: The service was reasonable timing of 10mins from ordering. Price, portion, taste: We were very happy with the portions and how both the flatbread and calamari turned out. The prices during happy hour are super decent for both drinks and food. Taste-wise, stick to the pub food of choice and you can't go wrong. Both the flatbread and calamari were crispy and well-flavoured. I come here often with my co-workers, as it is one of the better pubs in the area that like. But for me, this place just does not do it. They have a very extensive menu of items, from pasta's to sandwich's, to drinks, the taste and the atmosphere just doesn't jive with me. I'm not trying to slag the place in anyway, as you are getting real good portions for your buck. If you have a small stomach like I do, you end up packing almost half of it. The place definately needs a facelift on the inside, as it seems like this place hasn't had a reno in more than 10 years. The seating area is really big, and there even is a pool table near the back. There's enough tv screens all around for you to catch whatever game that is being played. The service here is pretty good, as the waitresses treat you well, but when it's busy here, it's hard to flag down service at times. The parking here is nice, as they are located in a nice big plaza, and the beer selection here is pretty big. read more

Went for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Our server was very kind patient, and attentive to us. We ordered the Cauliflower bites as an appetizer which could've been a little crispier. Haven't been for a few years but John b was always good for wide ranging menu and lots of drinks and specials. Was really busy at dinner on a Friday night but we got the last table. During dinner and happy hour on a Friday it was busy and frenetic so if you want a quiet relax this is not the place. But it's busy and has lots on tap. Our waitress was spot on and attentive although you could see how busy she was. Good waitresses here. Happy hour was good and drinks were fine. We had spring rolls for apps $9. They were fine ask well. Beef dip was fine. Chicken burger was good and fries were average . Nice piece of thick chicken breast. Chicken lettuce wraps were very good but there was not enough lettuce. Finally the pad Thai. I had read on a review site that the John b had the best pad Thai in the tri cities. Well that person has never had pad Thai. The pad Thai here was honestly disgusting. It was in no way pad Thai and it had some really horrible after taste that seemed like it was supposed to be the Smokey flavour but is tasted like gross chemical, it was almost inedible and I did take it home but threw it out. What a waste of $20. Entrees have all gone up and average about $18.50. So chose wisely and enjoy your drinks! Maybe stick to happy hour! read more

Me and my gf came in HANGRY and ordered half the menu. I was impressed with the service, our server was great and the food was great. Who would have known that a pub can make such a good wonton soup? Prawn appy - really good, nice little twist to adding the onions and veggies and making it kind of ceviche style. Bread it was served with could be slightly fresher. Wings- happy hour wings 37 cents each and soooo tasty. I really liked them. My only complaint was the ranch. I think it was made in house which is fine but it was overloaded with Thyme (maybe tarragon?). It was so strong I actually could barely use it. 9layer dip- my gf got it and said it was ok but kind of bland. It's made in house fresh each time when you order it which is a plus Mini version of beef dip- they offer mini versions of select meals and the mini beef dip was plenty! The beef was soft and succulent and the au jus was tasty but a wee bit on the saltier side. Fries were really good Salmon burger - my gf ordered it and said it wasn't bad but was a little fishy which I confirmed after giving it a smell. It sure looked amazing. Shrimp and pork Wonton soup - hot damn I have no clue how a pub got it right. The shrimp and pork are in the wontons not in the soup itself. Tried this spot out for the first time, and oh man, we were missing! We always pass by it, but never took the time to explore it. They have a massive array of alcohol options (2 full, large menus) and a variety of food -from tacos to burgers to pizza to steak, and a lot of fusion dishes as well! I think I've only been to Coquitlam once the entire time I've lived in Vancouver and I don't even remember what I did while I was out here. My second trip out here was because I was meeting a friend at John B's. He suggested this spot for drinks and since I'm always willing to try new spots, I agreed. It was a Wednesday evening, so I wasn't expecting it to be busy. But to my surprise, when I walked in the bar and lounge area were fairly busy. We were told to grab a seat anywhere, so we grabbed a table by the fireplace in the upper lounge. Our server was awesome the whole night. We ordered a few glasses of red wine (merlot) and some tequila shots later in the evening and she made sure to clear our glasses and top up our drinks whenever it was getting close to empty. I can tell that the servers at this pub really care about their customers, especially all the local regulars. We didn't order food, but I took a peek at the menu and they have an extensive list of burgers, sandwiches, and salads - your typical pub fare. From the other tables, the dishes looked like they were big portioned and filling. Maybe I'll have to make another trip out to Coquitlam to try some things off their food menu! I used to come here often when I worked close by in Coquitlam but stopped after I started working in downtown. That was around 2 years ago. More recently, my boyfriend moved to this neighbourhood so we decided to stop by and watch a hockey game here. There are definitely alot of older folks who frequent this place and it truly is a Neighbourhood pub. Its very laid back and the staff are friendly. Decor-wise, this place could probably use a face lift, as the furniture is kind of old. There is a small dance floor, a stage for live bands, and a few big screen tvs. They offer a massive menu and have all sorts of items ranging from Vietnamese Pho noodles, to Coq au Bin, to Guinness Pie. When I came here for lunch in the past, I usually got their salads which came in a large portion and I remember them being quite good. They have a decent selection of salads here. Tonight I tried their steamed mussels and their chicken and prawn pad thai. I thought the mussels were mediocre, they either were not fresh or were over done.. I couldn't tell. The pad thai was alright... my boyfriend really liked it and i thought it was okay, probably due to the fact that it was very peanutty and I am not a huge fan of nuts. I must say, the pieces of chicken in it was grilled to perfection though. Our friend ordered a cannelloni dish and I had a bite... it was pretty good. For dessert, I tried their mint chocolate cheesecake, which surprisingly was very good! I'm usually not a huge fan of chocolate cakes as I find them too rich and sweet, but this was perfect, with an Oreo cookie crust, a minty cheesecake filling, and topped off with just the right amount of chocolate ganache. I came here for a lunch dinner. Our waitress was friendly but her body kept pulling away every time we had a question. She was always in a rush are acted as though there was a fire in the kitchen. She was friendly enough, however, there was no real connection. Maybe it was the lunch rush but she had or so it seemed a happy bone in her body. The place is huge with lots of seats. Older demographic which means music is at a respectable sociable volume. Portions were very generous and vet reasonably priced. Taco salad was $13 and huge. Everything a neighbourhood pub should be: friendly, laid-back, not very hip, but not too boring either. John B. is the kind of place you can kick back with some friends. They concentrate more on the beer list and menu than the decor, which looks like it hasn't been updated since a really bad period of the nineties. The menu is huge, with easily over 80 different items, and many sound quite adventurous for pub fare (like the Lemongrass Beef Salad, or the Cuban Roast Pork Panini). I stuck with the "messy burger," which lived up to its name and was delicious, and my companion had the Greek wrap, which she had no complaints about. The fries were pipin' hot, which is always a plus. With plenty of local and international beers on tap, you're bound to find something you like from the taps. This is definitely my favourite pub in the tri-cities. The food is great! The wings are really crispy and come in a lot of different flavours. The pad thai is a lovely surprise. It's just saucy enough, and is the best pad thai I've had at a non-Thai restaurant. Burgers are decent, the deep fried pickles are tasty and even the salads are fresh and interesting. Prices are good, and there's a lot of different beers on tap. The service is great too - when we've come on a busy night they will help line up a table for you, and even moved us to a comfier spot (without us asking) when something better became available. There's usually something interesting happening in the evening too. Either live music, performances (I saw highland dancers there once), or a charity fundraiser. The patio is a gem for Coquitlam, filled with lush plants and a good mix of shadier tables and uncovered ones. My only complaint is that it's too popular, so there can be a wait for a table and food! read more

Spacious pub, lots of TV's everywhere if you're after a game. If you're there with friends, you can find a nice table on their cozy patio in the Summer. Good selection of meals, all yummy! ! From chicken wings, to poutine, salads, burgers. .. to have with a cold pint of beer, a cocktail, wine or just ice tea. They occasionally host fundraisers, which is nice to be able to help out. I don't usually venture out to Coquitlam, but if I do again, I'll stop in at John B Pub. It's a typical looking pub, but the place was thoroughly clean including the washrooms. There's plenty of tables and the seating is spacious. When I read Johnson C's review, I was so excited that they served Fruli. Unfortunately, they didn't have it when I visited so the Russell Angry Scotch Ale was my replacement. Although Fruli and Russell Angry Scotch Ale are entirely 2 different beers, they are both SO GOOD! I shared some mussels cooked in beer and tomato sauce as well as the poutine. Both were surprisingly delicious. There were plenty of mussels in my dish and they were a good size. I couldn't stop dipping my bread in the beer and tomato sauce as well. The fries, gravy and cheese curds in the poutine were piping hot so it was hard to stop eating even though I was full. I had a great experience at John B Pub. read more

I'd do lunch here any time. However, don't go here on a Friday or Saturday night when they have the music playing if you think you're going to get a pub experience. Really, when they have the music going, it's more like living inside of a percussive instrument. Tonight we went there for a late dinner at 9. We were gone by 9:30 after two drinks and an appie as we couldn't stand to be there any longer. One guy at the table beside me had bits of napkins stuck in his ear to keep from going deaf. As I write this my ears are humming. I think they need to decide if they're a nightclub or a pub, because they appear to be on the fence about this. When I think pub I think of a place I can go and hold a conversation, not a place where I have to worry about bleeding from the eardrums. I have no problem with music, or live music, provided that it doesn't cause physical pain, but the CIA could use the John B's sound system to extract vital information from Al Quaida.
