Welcome to my neighbourhood local. Good local beer selection, with rotating taps. And the food is good! Today I'm trying the beef chilli, organic to boot, and it's delicious! Baked cheddar topping, with a healthy dollop of sour cream and lots of tortilla chips for dipping. My only quibble with this place is the music volume. Maybe I'm an old lady (or at least middle-aged), but it's too loud in here. On the plus side, the music they play is great. There is often live music here, too, which I love. I saw this reviewed on the front page of Yelp on August 20th and book marked it. It was actually Leona's picture of what looked like a smores dessert which sold me on putting this on my bucket list. I came here for lunch cause I was too lazy to go to the gym. I figured that my jaw muscles needed a workout with an awesome plate of huevos rancheros. If you can get over the smell of burning tires from outside than this place is awesome. Lots of space, clean wood interior, great hipster music. They were playing The War on Drugs when I dined. It was just myself and one other girl, therefore, just occupied myself with working on my zine. The guy at the bar was super awesome and chill. Plate to mouth service was around 23 minutes which was a bit slow for something that's already 2/3 prepared. They just had to cook the egg really and possibly heat the beans. I don't mean to be a meal diva but I was on a lunch break that sadly was only an hour. I was also the only one eating. Other than that the experience was good. read more

I absolutely like going here. The wait staff are friendly and the atmosphere is comfortable, laid back, and welcoming. We often go here for a relaxed drink and snack, and will often run into people we know. My only criticism, and I hope the management reads this, is that the music is at times too loud. Not a band or a dj, just the recorded music that is being played. I always like the choice of tunes, but it can make it difficult to carry on a conversation. And from looking around, that is what the customers are mostly doing: sitting enjoying the company of friends in conversation. I would easily give you 5 stars, if you would kindly turn down the volume so I can carry on a conversation with my friends without having to shout or cup my ear. read more

It's a rainy Friday and a few friends and I decide to kill some time at -The Heatly- before Rent Cheque at the Astoria, that happens the last Friday of every month. So we enter and sit down at a booth for four. One Star: for Ambience Two Star: for location/cool scene. It was DJ night and DJ Rhonda was playing the music SO LOUD, What?? I can't hear you.... That was my conversation with my +3 gf's. What's the point of going out on a Friday night to just sit at The Heatly, spend my well earned buck to just sip, sip stare??! I don't get it, I would have left but we were there and just needed to kill an hour before going back to the Astoria. People, turn the friggin'music down!! The vibe from our hotel went from skid row to wow what is this.. i didn't see live music a °DJ was there but not playing we didn't mind the drinks were good and the food was great to us its a simple gastropub to us and it was way better than our states... something new.... read more

Atmosphere: 5/10, food and service: 2/10. They do have good shows sometimes though! Veggie burger had zero taste, "homemade" Chickpea patty looked and tasted like no name frozen brand, fries were missing any type of spice - including salt which is rare. Highly NOT recommended. read more

The Heatley is usually such a great place to come for a chill dinner and drink. I came in the other night with my dad for a bite after work and while the food was good and the drinks were good, the service left a LOT to be desired. Not only did our drinks not arrive until our food did, but my food order was partially wrong. I'm not a very picky eater so I didn't say anything. However, after dinner, we decided to have a glass of wine. My dad specified we were looking for a red wine, and after the waitress filled us in on our options, we picked one and didn't think anything of it. When the waitress then showed up with white wine, my dad did mention that we had been looking for a red wine, but that if it was a problem, we'd be happy to drink the white wine that she'd brought (even though neither of us really like white wine). The waitress then became passive aggressive and told us "Whatever, I'll figure it out" when my dad repeatedly told her we'd drink the white wine if it was a problem. For the rest of the evening, we received sub-par service and she wouldn't look at us or say anything to us the rest of the night. When the time came to pay our bill, she didn't say a single word to us, even after we said "thank you, have a good night" to her. I like the Heatley and their food and drinks, but I am not inclined to return due to the service. read more

Ugh, I hate writing this review as I really wanted to encourage Strathcona local businesses! A group of eight of us were hungry and thirsty and happy that we had a great looking option in the hood, after having done some culture crawling in the hood. We managed to find a table (for ourselves, no one even pointed a table to us), and then proceeded to wait a few minutes before heading to the bar to grab menus ourselves. Yes, there is a theme here... We busied ourselves with banter and menu perusing hoping that the server would pay attention to us and head over our way. Instead she and the bartender seemed to be chatting and not paying attention to any customer whatsoever. Ten minutes later, one of us decided we had waited long enough. He walked over to the server to only have her TURN in the other direction when she clearly saw him headed her way (we all watched and saw this happen). He was persistent and asked that she please come take our orders. This ends badly. 5 minutes, and she was back standing with the bartender and not making any moves towards our table. We walked out. The artwork is beautiful and the service is abysmal. Sadly, not a business I will be supporting even though it is in my neighbourhood. read more

This is the gem this neighbourhood has been asking for and, whoa, does it ever deliver. The signature cocktails are a dream. Each one with amazing fresh local ingredients. The Apparition has rosemary syrup along with fresh cut cucumber and a sprig of rosemary to garnish. I tried the Crispy Chicken Entree. It blew my mind. The amount of flavours were just amazing yet simple. The Chicken thigh has no fat on it what so ever and was just tender and juicy and packed full of flavours if thyme and rosemary. It's beautifully brined an perfectly crispy pan fried skin. You can tell there is love out into this chicken, alone. The Polenta is so tasty and flavourful, I could have just eaten that. The Brussels underneath the chicken with the bacon was a treat. The brussles were perfectly cooked with just enough crunch. Perfectly cooked!!!! My bartender Gabrielle was spectacular. She's funny and knowledgable with a wonderful character. She is so excited on what the place has to offer which makes me excited about it too. I highly recommend this place. I made love to the food and stayed for the drinks. 5 stars, hands down. read more

Easily the worst brunch I have ever had in Vancouver. Depressing weird breakfast with a smokie and some sad arugula and yesterday's cold, hard potatoes. When they say waffles they mean eggos. Not worth the $$. But, GREAT SERVER (she gets the star) and she adjusted the price for us because it sucked so much. I will probably go back, at night, because it seems like a good place to get drunk. But it is an absolute breakfast nightmare. read more

I love The Heatley! Strathcona has been dying for a new restaurant. I had the nachos which have a creamy rich cheese sauce which was delicious! I couple friends of mine got the Mac-and-cheese, one added jerk chicken and the other added pulled pork, and they were raving about it. I also got The Apparation, which is a gin drink that reminds me of a Rosemary mojito, and it's to die for! Great food great drinks... Great decor and atmosphere.. I'll be back for sure! read more

Came in at 5:40pm, it wasn't until 6:10 did our order get taken. We ordered our drinks and food together, and then waited for another 20min without our beers. It was not like it was super busy, there were like two other tables. They need to hire more staff if they want to keep customers, because my group ended up leaving as we knew our food would not be coming anytime soon with the total of three employees bumping into one another trying to figure out the bills. Additionally, they were out of food items on the very limited menu. TLDR: Very poor customer service. read more

Went here with a group of friends for dinner before catching a show. We made reservation at the last minute and they were able to accommodate our group of 9 people. The place is nice enough inside, not too loud, lots of tables. Our waitress was quite nice and took our drink orders promptly. After we ordered food, some of it came out sooner than others (to be expected for such a large group). One order was forgotten, but the server was very apologetic for it and brought out free chips and salsa so my friend wasn't the only one not eating. Beer selection is good, although I believe they are 16 ounce pints, not proper 20 ounce pints (I could be wrong but that's how it seemed to me). Beer prices are average, but the cocktails are way overpriced ($8.50 for a single caesar, likely made with Smirnoff, no garnish....wtf?). The menu is limited and has comfort food items such as nachos, mac and cheese, hot dogs and BLT sandwich. I had the mac and cheese with pulled pork, which was delicious, but I found the portion to be quite small. My girlfriend had the BLT, which was average. The hot dogs looked quite interesting, with toppings such as hickory sticks. My friend who had two of them said they were pretty good if not quite filling. Good experience overall, I probably would go here again and try the hot dogs next time. I would give it four stars if it served bigger portions (food and beer) and if the cocktails weren't so pricey. Just found out about this place, and love it!! It's Sunday night, 10:30pm, and we've just got here and 1. they're open! (Yay!!!! This is quite late for Vancouver after all); 2. They have really cold, good beer! 3. Their veggie tacos (which can be made vegan) are pretty delish; and 4. What?! Live, awesome music?! How not to love this place? :) oh, and close to home! Ps. Just wish they had more vegan options on the menu. read more

I have been a few times. I have been waiting for the food to get better. It hasn't. My wife and I went here a while ago for the third time. She had tacos - they were very small and tasted bland. She ordered three at 4 bucks a peice - way over priced. It looked like an appetizer. I had a club sandwich which was no edible do to being drenched with greese. The salad it came with was not much better. It looked and tasted like it had been dressed in the morning and sat and got soggy all day before I got it. Pretty pathetic. I will go back there for beer as it is great location for me and I like the atmosphere. But the food and cocktails are terrible. read more

Great little spot on Hastings. Nice vintage decor. Extensive beer list, lots of local brews of course. I was nervous about the food after some bad reviews. No need at all, great food and service. My favourite is the root vegetable salad. Never had a salad like that before and it was delicious. The veggie burger was one of those let's break apart with each bite veggie burgers but good flavour. Overall, a great choice for a different twist on pub food. Or a great venue for a few brews. read more

I was super excited to check out this restaurant because of the buzz and after taking a glimpse at their cocktail menu online. Unfortunately, they didn't have half the ingredients for the drink I was looking forward too, but the waitress was extremely apologetic and made a delicious substitution. We ordered the nachos and the arugula salad and our friend got the hot dog deal. The hot dogs looked fine, no grilled bun, absolutely nothing special. The salad was alright, good ingredients and idea but it kinda tasted like a Mediterranean/Italian salad mix that lacked a punch of acidity. The nachos were good to begin with, interesting idea to use sweet pickled jalapeños but again it lacked a depth of flavour and balance and the bottom half was soggy which left much to be desired. They had what appeared to be an open mic night/acoustic set which still allowed for some conversation, but I just couldn't get the vibe of this place. I feel like it's really struggling with its identity. Is it a cocktail bar? coffee shop? Beer and burger place? I couldn't figure it out but I sure hope they do. The best part about this place is their knowledgable and good looking staff. I really wanted this place to be better than it actually was. read more

I ordered "the heatley" burger. The patty was charred on the edges and was all around mediocre. Very bland. The side salad was ok and the potatoes were also ok but there was maybe 8 or 9 pieces. if the burger wasn't $15 I wouldn't have been so offended. What I got was not worth that price. read more

Great location, interior decor, space and aesthetic. Cannot comment on the food as I went there for drinks with a group. They serve Strange Fellows beer which is great, one of my favorite breweries. I would love to give it more stars, but the time I was there, the service was TERRIBLE ! Our group sat down and was not approached by a server for over 20 minutes. I figured hey , maybe you have to order from the bar, so I went and waited at the bar. Two employees were behind the bar, a man and woman in their mid 30's. We made eye contact and they knew I was there to order, but proceeded to talk amongst themselves and ignore me before finally coming over to take a few other peoples orders but then serving me last. Every time we ordered another round of drinks, same thing, once the lady told me she was too busy and stressed out to serve me (only 20 people there that night) . We also waited well over 15 minutes to pay our tab when leaving, which is completely unacceptable as well. No idea why a completely inexperienced and rude bartenders are employed there. If you're stressed out bartending for 20 people, it may be a good idea to choose another line of work. Love the place and would go again, hopefully they make some staffing changes though ! read more

For someone dealing with a gluten allergy, I was pleasantly surprised by how many options I had at The Heatley. To start I had the Portobello/Prawn appy, substituted the crostini for corn tortilla chips and it was DELISH. If you like ooey gooey cheesiness, then this ones for you. Currently salivating as I remember it. Definitely can't wait to go back and have it again. For my main entree I had the tacos (it comes in threes). Again, on corn tortilla, savoury pork, topped with tasty fresh veggies. Last but not least was dessert, I had the creme brûlée and chocolate mousse (hold the biscotti). Just what was needed after dinner. Something sweet and light. As long as you let them know of any food allergy, they are more than accommodating. I will definitely be coming back. read more

I feel kinda bummed about my experience...Although I take into consideration the location of the venue, The Heatley-super cool spot, which is on Hastings. My partner and I stood in front of the business and waited aside as the server informed us they were busy and they will attempt to consolidate tables of friends to make space. We waited aside For 15 minutes, only to have two young ladies seated and served before us. I informed another server that we had been waiting and they were seated before us, only to be told "The owner seated them!" Sorry, but with two servers worker and one owner communication is super important. Nice to see the spot so busy, I know being a server at a hip spot is hard work. But let's make sure to tell coworkers there are customers waiting to be served. I'll mention we didn't walk away from the building, we stood 3-4 feet away from the entrance in front of the window waiting to be seated like the initial server had instructed us. When we were finally seated, our drinks were served promptly (thank you!!) however, I am uncomfortable with the amount of time it took to "seat" and "consolidate" tables. I ordered French fries and while I was in the washroom, my partner had been turned from the bar to watch the musician, and the owner knocked onto the table by him and asked, "You good....?" But he had gotten the vibe that this staff member thought he was going to leave without paying as he was turned in the direction of the door. I can't say for sure this was what the staff meant when he knocked on the table next to him, but we had already felt uncomfortable with our experience from the moment we walked in. As for my fries, unfortunately our server forgot to punch in the order. At this point, I really just wanted to finish my beer and leave. Was our food order not punched in as we were expected to dine & dash? I cannot say for sure. I understand that safety first is important in this neighbourhood, but we were clearly being judged for having our tshirt/shorts/sneakers & backpacks on us from our exploration of the city, and I wouldn't say we looked scummy at all. (Edmonton is home) We truly wanted to come in and enjoy the music and a cold beer. Unfortunately, the experience was terribly unwelcoming and we felt uncomfortable. ***The beer was delicious and so were the fries. Thanks for the complimentary French fries, but I probably wouldn't recommend to a friend, unless you are dressed for a night out. Lol.*** read more

We've wanted this place to be good since it opened. Unfortunately it is only consistent in it's ability to disappoint. As a neighbourhood bar/restaurant in Strathcona one would hope it would be more in tune with it's environment/neighbours. The cocktails are over priced, the food is uninspiring and there isn't much offered for vegetarian or vegan meals. Not to mention an easy side like fries. Provide a simpler menu, one that does a few good things well, as opposed to offering a bunch of pub food that isn't fresh or exciting. Slim down the drinks list, offer more reasonable cocktails or cheap cans of beer. The Heatley has an incredible location that could be really successful if only it could figure out it's own identity. read more

We live in the neighbourhood and looked forward to trying the Heatley. It was a Friday night, 6:30 pm, and the place was empty. Hmm. We didn't lose hope. The staff seemed half-engaged. Well, hey, it's Vancouver. Three menu items not available...okay, well maybe the chicken and the mixed nuts didn't get delivered today. The beef flank on the menu doesn't exist, its brisket, the menu is being changed. Uh huh, okay, s***t happens. Ya get busy and your printer runs out of ink. At least you've got your kick ass food to fall back on. Then the food arrives. Hot dog, meat balls, brisket. The kind of stuff you could make at home and still not screw up. But the Heatley? Tasteless, overcooked, awful. Embarrassingly bad. My mother made awful mashed potatoes but hers were a mouthwatering triumph compared to the lumpy, unflavoured nothingness served at the Heatley. How can you screw up mashed potatoes? You could hammer nails with the brisket. The service was slow even though the place was empty. The staff don't care and now I understand why. They see the iceberg approaching and its got a big sign on it "Closed Because Cooking...Its Harder Than We Thought Eh". Maybe the ownership needs to get that first bar/restaurant failure under its belt. Mission accomplished. read more

Let's start with the positive: the space is great. Like really good. Warm and comfortable. The not so positive? Drinks were pretty good, but overpriced for the most part (6oz glass of on tap wine starting at $9)--also they were out of two draught beers :( The food was over priced and poorly executed for what it was. There seemed to be a lack of cohesion--from jerk chicken to hummus to ceviche to too sweet desserts. Did appreciate that the menu was small though. The negative: the service was awful. Slow, inattentive and quite aloof, frankly. I really want to see this place do well and I think it would start with a revised food concept and staff that care about providing an excellent experience. read more

Brutal service. The food is good but this business is going nowhere with the shabby, don't give a crap service. I've been there 2 times now and both times it was terrible service. The bigger woman was so rude and ignoring of our table and the man bartender the 2nd time totally forgot my drink order. For those who haven't deduced it from the reviews, this "restaurant" seems to want to be a bar, but couldn't get the license. Drinks ok but overpriced, food abysmal but required as part of the liquor license to serve the drinks. Sad because Strathcona really needs a little neighbourhood joint for decent brunch and dinner. read more

Our group was visiting Vancouver and staying around the corner. We had a fantastic time chatting with the staff on a slow night. Gabrielle is a joy. The drinks were fabulous. Very well priced. The food was great too. I was shocked to have the best nachos I'd had in years given I was raised in Texas and live in Denver. One doesn't associate nachos with Vancouver generally. :-) read more
