I called to make my two cats and my daughters cat an appt. They didn't have one of my cats on file which is funny since I have THEIR paperwork on her. Then they wanted to charge me as "new" patient since my cats hadn't been there for awhile. I guess since the economy is raping everyone right now why shouldn't they join in on the band wagon. WTF??? Are they there for the almighty $ or are they there for the animals. We all know the answer to that. Don't understand vets anymore. I just spent close to $2,000 on pre spay/neuter check ups, spay/neuter surgery for 6 cats/kittens, as well as hundreds more on other cats over the years at this vet. Yes, it is pricey, these were not even my cats, I am paying for others lack of responsibility for their cats. I know one of the cats has thyroid tumor. To clarify, vet said cat has had thyroid tumor for years, why wasn't it caught years ago, when this same cat had health issues, even had overnight treatment, blood work done, etc, at this vet? Vet prescribed methimazole, was overpriced. I found a better deal online, this vet denied Vet Source request for the Rx, said it has been a year, the cat needs a exam. The cat is 16, is dying, already known to have large thyroid tumor, why pay for another needless, expensive exam, to get the cheaper meds, when I am poor, trying to do the best I can for a little less money. We have been going there for 20 years, and have always paid our bill. Our last dog, who died of cancer, cost us almost $10,000 for surgeries and meds. The vet office always got their money. Recently, I had an appt for our newest dog for yearly shots. An emergency came up and I canceled the appt the day before. Upon trying to reschedule the appt, the girl at the desk said she would have to have our card # in order to reschedule and they would charge a "no show" fee. I told her I was not, nor ever have been , a "no show", that I talked to someone and canceled the appt. I didn't schedule the next appt cause I wanted to talk to Sue in the office, who has always been so kind and helpful, but i was told she was on vacation. A week later my husband called and ordered some pills for our dogs and they said it would be ready in an hour. No mention of the "no show" fee. When he gave her his charge card she went ahead and charged the xtra $30. no show fee, without even saying that she was going to. i called and raised cane and she said "do u want me to email your dogs records so you can find someone else"? She was rude, condescending, and I told her I was a grown woman and she didn't need to speak to me like I was a child. Little snot nosed kid at the front desk cost them my money! Literally the best vet clinic in town. They always make me and my dog feel welcome and gush over her when she is there. My dog enjoys going and spending the day here as much as she does anywhere. She's also had to stay there multiple days as they helped her overcome a severe heartworm problem (that she had when he adopted her from her previous owners). On top of all that, their prices are reasonable and they worked with us to avoid any unnecessary expenses (to the point of waiving some fees that weren't medicine related). The Vets and staff at East State are top-notch. My dogs receive the best care possible. They keep up to date on the latest treatments. Dr Bruinsma even successfully treated my dog's broken knee. I recently moved to the area and my one eyed cat started having an infection in her eye. We couldnt go to the our past vet because they were two hours away. We called the East State Clinic and got an appointment that day. They listened to me ramble about her medical history and give them all the history i had. They really listened, they even checked out my other cat to make sure the infection didnt spread to him. They listened to any other concerns and helped me figure out solutions. Then they got us the medicine necessary. Both cats are now doing fine. I strongly recommend them. read more

We took our dogs to East State Veterinary Clinic when we lived in Fort Wayne years ago. We recently visited from TN, where we now live, and one of our dogs became ill. The clinic agreed to see our dog, and we were thrilled to find Dr. Bruins a and his wonderful receptionist still there. Our dog was given excellent, professional care, and he is well again. We are so grateful to everyone at East State, and we will feel good knowing they are here when we visit family and friends in Ft Wayne again. Apparently we have a note in our file that we are low income. We have been going to East state for three generations. We have taken in our senior dog three different times for pain. Three different "diagnosis" and no offer of pain control. Today the diagnosis was vertigo with no tests run, no observation. We called back and talked to a tech, not a doctor, and the notes in the file did not match what they were told. We were told to get a second opinion or to get a different vet. Don't worry, we have. I have been extremely impressed with the care of my pups by both the docs and staff at East State Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Bruinsma is warm, caring, and takes the time to hear my concerns. I am new to the area and it's as hard to find a good vet as it is a doctor for myself. Prices are reasonable and I find that he doesn't order unnecessary tests. I was writing this post to thank the Doctors and staff for being there when my puppy Choco really needed them. He decided that our son's sock was as good as a steak so he ate it while I was chasing him around the couch last night. Luckily today he had his 13 week shots and the doctor possibly gave us life changing advise. He ended up vomiting up the sock along with what looks like todays complete meals and he is now napping. I am sure without there help the outcome could and would have been so much worse. The advice was indeed great but why I am writing this is because his doctor was even willing to stay after hours tomorrow if needed and preform surgery if that was what needed to be done. I don't think I could have chosen a better place to have taken him from the start of his jurney with our family and for that I want to say thank you so much. He has been going to East State since he was brought home and is now 3 months old and I know we made a good choice by enrolling him into the puppy plan and again thank you so much. Consistently sloppy and chaotic. I gave this vet clinic more chances than they should have been given. They consistently would give me the wrong food and supplies for my cat. Three times in a row I had to make a return trip to the clinic after getting home and realizing their mistakes. Their record keeping is sloppy to non-existent. I've been to this clinic about a dozen times over five months, and each time it is extremely loud and chaotic, with long wait times. This is an especially bad place if you have a cat. For example, they weigh your cat on every visit and to do so take her out into the noisy waiting room full of barking dogs. Why would you have the scale in the waiting room? This obviously adds even more stress to your cat. Their record keeping is sloppy to non-existent. Their checkups are not at all thorough. For example, I told the vet my cat still had an ear infection and asked if I should continue with the ear drops. She gave advice without even checking my cat's ears! The vet also uses old information to make diagnostic suggestions. My cat has kidney disease, and it used to be thought that a low-protein diet was beneficial. However, research that came out several years ago - and is discussed in vet conferences - shows that a high-protein diet is better for kidney disease. A simple Google search will lead you to scholarly vet articles on this subject. I don't have confidence in a vet who does less research than I do. During each visit, my former vet (whom I can no longer see because she lives in another state) would check my cat's ears, her weight, her blood pressure, ask about her diet and litterbox habits and confirm she was on the same food and medication. She'd take notes the entire time and would give me a report at the end of each visit. This vet weighs your cat and that's about it. My former was also aware of the latest research related to my cat's health issues and made diagnostic recommendations accordingly. I can't say the same for this vet. To make visits even more uncomfortable, I had a different vet tech each time and none of them ever introduced themselves. One didn't even say hi. I love my cat and want the very best care for her. Talked down to us like we were overreacting and incompetent and pretty much just sent us on our way but billed us for the visit. My husband already refused to go back and now my dog is sicker than before. After making my dog suffer for weeks, now they're going to run tests.This rude man should've listened the first time.
