They charge a flat rate of $12 from 6 PM until 6 AM. However, the downfall is you must get your car out by 6 AM otherwise it is $2, every 15 minutes till 8 AM (so an additional $8), then it becomes another flat rate of $16. They rake in the money with this oddly worded rate signage upon entering. Yet, it's located only a block from Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Stars so it is ideal for tourists who want to park longer than two hours at a meter. This four level parking garage isn't the cleanest place, but it does the job. Careful when you exit the parking lot since there is always dog poop and homeless encampments on the sidewalks. This is regardless of a police station and homeless services being located directly in the front of this parking garage. There is an elevator or stairs to access the various levels. On the second floor there are about 10 EV car chargers, but only three of them actually function. The remainder are all out of service or broken. Given that this is a LA City lot, it would be nice if they repaired the chargers as part of their "Go Green LA" campaign. If anyone figures out what the climbing shoes sculpture represents out front, let me know.

Unlike other major airports, there doesn't seem to be strong parking enforcement at the arrival terminals to force waiting cars to move along if their passengers haven't arrived yet. The result is that there are cars brazenly idling as long as they need at the point of arrival, meaning there are plenty of spots at this cell phone lot. Cars also park on the streets nearby waiting for that phone call, which frees up further spaces. I came on an early weekday afternoon to pick up my wife, and there were plenty of spots. There are Port-a-Potties near the back, and sure enough saw plenty of well-dressed people racing their car close to relieve themselves...that was the only time when noticing people were driving a bit too fast in a parking lot. Understandable. One thing I don't like is the possibly difficult left turn out of the parking spot to get to the terminals. There is no stop light, so just have to depend on people doing the right thing to let you go where you need to go...just like at the airport terminals themselves. Maybe you can say using this facility gets you into the spirit of being ready to navigate the mess that is LAX passenger pickup.

I really love that we still call these airport-adjacent parking lots "cell phone waiting lots." At…read morethe time (after September 11, 2001), it made total sense. These were free parking lots where you could wait for people you were picking up from the airport. They called or texted you on their cellphones when they landed, and you responded with your cellphone. Before the ubiquity of wireless phones (not to be confused with cordless phones), picking someone up from the airport required you either to park and go to the terminal to wait for them or to try to time your arrival so that you could pick them up without getting hassled by the airport police or local police or airport security or Homeland Security to move your car. Nine-eleven meant non-passengers could no longer go past security, and the general fear of terrorism and/or bombings meant local authorities didn't like cars or trucks sitting next to airports, so the big airports (LAX, O'Hare, ATL, SFO, JFK, Logan, etc.) built parking lots that were free, but more importantly, they were far from the target-rich airports themselves. (It used to bother me just how far these things were from the terminals until I realized that the distance was one of the major concerns.) So they should be called "pick-up waiting lots" or just "waiting lots" at this point, but we did used to say and write "cell phone" all the time, even long after it was clear we were no longer referring to landlines. I only lived in Southern California briefly after September 11, and when I did, I normally built time into picking people up from LAX, so I never really used or knew where the Cell Phone Waiting Lot was. But in the last three years, I've been here at least twice, once to pick up my brother, and I believe the other time to pick up my nephew. It's way too small for the size of the airport. Way too small. I always tend to think O'Hare's and SFO's lots are too big, but I'd rather have too many spots than not enough, and this one borders on not having enough. It doesn't help that they store lights, huge road signs, and other construction equipment right in the parking lot, taking away even more space. They do have porta-potties, which I guess is great in an emergency, and the handwashing stations are outside, so they're less likely to be gross. The location is also pretty bad. It's hard to get to, difficult to navigate once you get out of of it, and not very convenient for most of the terminals past the Bradley Terminal as you go counterclockwise around the airport.
