I love diners, and this one is fabulous! Located right downtown by the inner harbor, on Government Street, this restaurant is large, with two separate doors 1/2 block apart. I loved the spacious interior with the retro diner aesthetic. I loved how it opens at 7am and has a lot of breakfast options, and all are reasonably priced. I love the booths, the soda counter, the chalkboard message board with daily specials on it. I love the cheery and attentive server we had. And, lastly, I love the food here! (I was here for breakfast and my eggs and bacon were EXACTLY how I ordered them, and they also made me a fantastic iced vanilla latte, too). The restaurant and the bathrooms were super clean, too (bonus!). I checked out the extensive menu and realized, heck, I should have come here the day before for lunch. They have so many sandwiches and burgers available. Just wow. IMO this place would be perfect for breakfast or lunch, or a late night snack. (I think they're open until 9pm). Frankie's Modern Diner was a nice casual place to stop by for dinner. We had a reservation for dinner on a weekday, but there were hardly anyone in during prime meal time. The atmosphere was alright with dimmer lighting than other similar places which was nice for the mood, and the place was surprisingly louder than expected for the little people that were there. The waitress we had was friendly and nice, but also came by frequently to ask if we were done looking at the menu, with our food, wanting the bill. It felt very rushed despite there not being many other customers in the area. We were only in the restaurant for about 45 minutes today. The food was mediocre. I had the fried chicken and waffles, which looked good but tasted generic. The fried chicken was a bit dry and just tasted like it was seasoned with salt and pepper and that's about it. The waffle tasted like something anyone could make at home. My friend had the Caesar salad, which was drenched in sauce but otherwise looked alright. I love diner food so we went to Frankie's which is also my grandson's name. They have a huge menu. You get so many choices. They said the fish was fresh so we all got fish and chips and it was a huge plate of food. The fish was delicious. The server was friendly and gave good service. The atmosphere is old diner with red booths but has newer menu items like roasted Brussels sprouts and wings. We really enjoyed eating here and will come back. read more

I came here on a whim, and I am so satisfied that I did.. The place was an upstairs, and it opens up to a surprising large area. It's like an old-fashioned diner with a modern twist. The place is inviting and kind of fun. My waitress, Melanie, was an absolute delight. Had great food suggestions, and was attentive. The food tasted wonderful, the price is very reasonable. I did come here for breakfast and the coffee is absolutely perfect. They do offer cocktails in the morning if you so desire. I'll be honest with you. I did have a beer at 8:30 in the morning. First evening in Victoria, I was feeling like a burger. Searching Yelp reviews didn't prove too promising. Frankie's was a bit of a walk from our hotel, but had decent reviews. So we gave it a try. It's interesting that we've noticed in the burger section of menus, there's usually just one choice of beef patty burger. We stumbled across this restaurant while walking around in the area. The restaurant is spacious with multiple tables and booths inside. When we entered we were greeted right away. One employee that really stood out was the hostess, Kaia. She came and checked on us multiple times and engaged in conversations with us during our visit even though she was not our server. Kaia was very friendly and personable. Many of the entrees that we saw looked good but I ordered a burger with fries. My meal also came with a salad so I got a Caesar salad. The salad was different than the Caesar salads that I've had in the past since it had a strong lemon flavor. It wasn't my favorite. The burger and fries were good. My meal was very filling. Frankie's was super incredible at one point. The service was amazing, the ambience was great, food was stellar. I actually went quite often. However, one time I went I saw a few mice in the restaurant. I informed a staff member, she apologized and gave my meal for free. I didn't go back for several months, but the next time I did, more mice. My friends went there recently, and to no surprise, there's still mice. This place has had a rodent issue for at least two years. I used to love this place, but I will never go back knowing the hygiene standards they are holding. It's disgusting. read more

A short walk from our hotel Frankie's hit all the spots for lunch for us. It was a little late in the afternoon for full blown lunch, so a couple salads and some wings were on the docket. The decor is dated to be sure, and could use a spruce up, but in our mind that's not why you're here. We were warmly greeted and quickly seated by Steph who took excellent care of us the entire time. She was quite attentive without being overly so. I ordered a garden salad, and the lovely K a Caesar salad along with an order of chicken wings and a couple of dips. My salad was quite good, not overly dressed and plenty of the things you want. Pumpkin seeds, tomato, cucumber and craisins were very evident, although the spring mix could have used a good going over to weed out the gnarly pieces. K's Caesar was also well dressed, but the bacon, although plentiful was kind of tasteless and the Parmesan was out of the dreaded cardboard dispenser. The wings were by far the star, they were excellent and the buffalo sauce was great. The blue cheese dip was good, but had two huge chunks of cheese that made it tough to dip. The wings though are appointment eating, likely some of the best we have ever had. Deep fried with what seemed to be rice flour and maybe a little baking soda as a covering. We'd go back for the wings all the time, pity we aren't in Victoria very often. read more

I spent a long time trying to find a place to have breakfast. The first two places were closed permanently and the third was on vacation. The next did not serve breakfast, but directed me to a place which did. I walked in at 11:31, and was told by the maître d' that breakfast was over. I guess I looked so haggard the waitress took pity on me and said as long as it wasn't a Benedict it was fine. I got bacon & eggs with coffee & a half avocado. Large booths and chalkboard writing on the wall with drink specials and little bit of art. I enjoyed the fried calamari, which the server said was a hit and it was just ok to me. A little chewy and lacked strong flavor, but the sauce was great- I believe it was some sort of tzatziki sauce. The meatballs and fries were OK. I didn't care for the fries but I did enjoy the meatballs and the cheese stuffed in them. It was a decent meal and decent pricing on happy hour items. We were too early for lunch, but breakfast was really good. We had three different dishes, and my super picky son ate all of his food. Food was good but service was not there at all. I had to ask twice for the water to be refilled, and our waitress was nowhere to be found.

Normally, I like to keep it simple and order off the menu, but with all the ingredient choices, I opted to create my own omelette ($10) so that I could get pico de gallo paired with spinach (additional $3). The egg was beautifully prepared to a lovely uniform thinness and was filled to the brim with the vegetable toppings. Unsure about the asiago cream sauce & parmesan cheese the menu describes as covering the home fries, I requested it on the side and found it was more shaved cheese than cream sauce - great for tucking into the omelette for some extra decadence. And you certainly won't leave hungry with the amount of home fries that comes with the meal, all well-toasted but also overly salted. Yet, what cinched the meal for me was the ability to choose a pancake or toast as a side... who would pick toast when pancake is an option?! And it was a good pancake to boot - fluffy and soft (but not sticky) with a lovely crust that acted as a barrier against the pancake becoming a syrup sponge as well as creating a pleasant chewy texture. It's hard to find many family friendly establishments in Downtown Victoria, but this seemed like the easiest bet. For a modernized diner, the menu was just diverse enough to have something for everyone. The kid's menu was basic in its offerings, but I was happy to see at least a healthy salmon dish option for a reasonable price.
