It isn't that gluggy sweet sugar & mayo combo you get at many places. It was just a simple cut up cabbage nicely seasoned. Maybe it had a little something else on it. Expect a line whenever you go because the word is out. The wait staff was friendly and working hard to keep the line moving. We found a chair up against a narrow wooden "bar" facing the water. I got the albacore tuna and tempura cod tacones which were decently priced and filling - 2 was more than enough for a nice meal. The albacore tuna was prepared medium and fresh and flavorful, and the tempura cod is nicely battered. Both shared similar ingredients like the slaw and it was hard to differentiate the different sauces. Line was long - even on Saturday 4:30pm, it was a 15 min queue and another 10 minutes for food. Basically a shack with some seating spots along the marina. Has its charm and nice views while being outdoors. Servers are friendly and the process is straightforward. There was a long line when we got here and it took about 30 minutes to get up to the front to order food. I would suggest that if you have multiple people in your party, have some people go get a table while others order the food. The tables get taken pretty quick. If you don't mind standing, then there are also places to just stand and eat your food. Watch out for the seagulls because they will try to steal your food! We all got the fried halibut and chips. It is NOT a cheap meal, especially for a place that is literally to-go orders only. I had the 2 piece meal and pieces of fish are big! OMG. Was it good!!! I was super crispy on the outside and on the inside it was piping hot and cooked perfectly!! As soon as I ate it I knew I wanted more!! The pieces of fish are big hearty pieces, so even though it is a pricey meal, I was not one bit disappointed. In fact, we immediately started all saying this was literally the best fish and chips any of us have ever eaten and that this is a must-try place! I came back with the family around 6:00 and I ended up waiting over 30 minutes before it was my turn to order. To manage your expectations, a couple things first: This is not a fancy sit down restaurant. This is a place where you will likely stand in line 30-45 minutes to queue up to the order window. (Bring a book?) This place has amazing food! Drink selection is non-alcoholic. Views are great and right on the waterfront. There are some seats or stand up area to eat your food but they do not offer table service. I had a bowl of chowder and split the 2-piece halibut and chips. But were great (big piece of fish in the the chowder!) and we split a sprite (Coke products are offered as fountain drinks and they have a couple of other sodas by the can). Without knowing how big they would be, I got two because that put the cost similar to that of a sandwich or a 1-piece fish and chips set, so I figured two tacones would be a meal, but they were actually pretty substantial! The yam tacone was a very tasty vegetarian (not vegan on account of the mayo) option - I would say it's worth coming here even if this is the only thing you can have. I came here on the recommendation of a coworker. The line was long on a weekday, and we waited about 30 minutes in line to get our order placed. Seating is limited and could be better. However, we made it work with our order of 3 pieces of halibut and chips, a bowl of chowder and a fountain drink. One sticking point we did not understand was that any order with 1-3 pieces of fish only included only one order of tartar sauce and another side of sauce would be an extra charge. I know the extra sauce did not cost that much, but after spending almost $70 for this meal. The sauce situation sort of dampened the experience. Some people really like their tartar sauce on their fish and I think 3 pieces of fish should have a bit more tartar sauce than 1 piece of fish. The fish was nicely fried and lightly battered. Is it the best fish and chips I have eaten? I would say no when compared to Lower Mainland options. However, it was a tasty option in the area and seems like a popular tourist attraction. The chips aka fries were also good. They were pipping hot and had a good crunch. The coleslaw was forgettable and average tasting. The chowder was different. It was mildly spicy with a hint of coconut flavour. There was an okay amount of fish and plenty of corn. I think it was good to try this version, but I prefer the New England style of chowder. I would say seating is a little limited, so I would be weary coming here with a big group. Fish & Chips 4/5: We tried both the BC Halibut and Pacific Cod. If you prefer a thicker, more meaty fish, get the Halibut. If you want something more delicate and flaky, get the Pacific Cod. Surprisingly, I liked the Pacific Cod more! I thought the Halibut was a little too thick, it overpowered the crunch of the fry. Tacones 4/5 - We got the Wild Salmon version and the Tempura Cod version, on a tostado. These get messy! If you order the regular version (on a tortilla), I recommend eating it ASAP because it can get soggy and impossible to eat. They gave large chunks of salmon and lots of sauce and toppings. The tostado version is worth trying as well! It was a little easier to eat and had a good crunch. Chowder 5/5 - Not your traditional, average chowder! It has an Asian twist, with a coconut, curry like flavor (has a slight kick). Lots of seafood and is a hearty break from all the fried food. We had to return to RFBF on our visit to Victoria and the food is just as good as I remembered! We got even MORE of their fish and chips this time trying their cod and halibut each in an order of two pieces with chips and it was amazing. Of course we got the Tacone which had plenty of ahi tuna inside and because their fish is so good, we also got the grilled ahi tuna on salad. We were shocked at how large the portions were and the slightly seared cookery of the tuna was done expertly. It is located near the harbour and only outdoor seating is available.
