What I've noticed about the reviews here is that they are (generally)either 5 stars or 1 star. Which reminds me of camping. People either love it or hate it. People either understand and embrace it and are inspired by the oneness of nature, the freedom, the wild sounds and smells.. ...or they are annoyed by the bugs, lack of wi-fi access, and absence of a hot shower. People are either going to love this place or hate it. Me, I love it. I love the atmosphere: yes there are 4 chairs in the room and I think it's great to be in a circular communal space with others who are empowering themselves towards healing. I have seen every type of patient here, young/old, every ethnicity... various personalities. The only thing that is the same about them is that they walk in with a smile and leave with a smile. I think Magie is wonderful. Her personality and quick wit is great, and I have always had quick responses from her when making appointments. I was 15 mins late on my first visit and though she had other customers, she still accommodated me. There will be those that hate it. Mostly because they simply don't get it. It's like the people who get freaked out by going into a Chinese massage joint on Mott Street. They're really more comfortable going to a Massage Envy or scoring some hotel Spa. And there are acupuncture places like that, sure. There are acupuncture places that charge 190 for a consultation and then 100 for every treatment thereafter. I was one of the patients receiving treatment when Phillip walked in. I think it's all a misunderstanding. You wouldn't walk in to your primary care physician's office and expect to be seen by him or her. If there's an emergency you go to ER. Echo Park Community Acupuncture isn't an ER and it isn't one of these Thai massage walk in places either. I am tired of seeing a charitable institution be disrespected by those who simply don't understand the practice and mission. The process is call and leave a message, if you don't hear back within 24 hours call again. They have always gotten back to me quickly. She is a highly skilled and professional acupuncturist not a door greeter. Most acupuncture clinics are not affordable, it's usually near $190 for the initial visit and then $75-$100 per visit after. Echo Park Community Acupuncture offers a sliding scale for near half those prices. Because of the affordability of course costs are kept at a minimum. There's no one to greet you at a reception desk, there's no one person who's sole responsibility is scheduling, there's not a website. The practitioners do it all and they have a system that works so costs can remain down so people can afford acupuncture and worth the practitioners' time to come in and treat. It's simple. I wouldn't be able to afford acupuncture if it wasn't for this place and it's truly medicine keeping me off pharmaceuticals and avoiding surgery. read more

Honestly, I am quite surprised of the number of excellent reviews for Magie Song. This review should have been posted some time ago, as my appointment with Magie happened when she was first opening her community acupuncture clinic... My friend and I scheduled our appointment for the evening. We Arrived to a room with 3-4 chairs. Magie asked if this was my first time with an acupuncturist, and it was! No other additional information was given regarding my FIRST time using acupuncture. This was slightly upsetting, as with any first experience you would like to know what to expect and so forth. But I calmed myself by justifying it as a low cost community clinic and maybe she doesn't have the time to explain the small things, because I pretty much know the basics, after all, I do my research. Magie asked the symptoms I had been experiencing and I answer, in a low tone, and she responded with, "what? I can't hear you!" Her face leaned close to mine, with a facial expression of disgust/anger. Well I wasn't going to use a normal tone as there are other people in the chairs with their eyes closed... I can elaborate, but I have read other reviews and I have finally found an amazing acupuncturist who bedside manor is impeccable. read more

I suffer from a complex long-term chronic neck condition that has gotten significantly worse in the past few years as a result of some systemic health problems. Over the summer I began an intensive self-directed program to reverse the condition through a number of modalities, including acupuncture and massage, in order to avoid surgery and get back to a healthier and happier "normal". I was really happy to find Magie Song (then at Tao of Venus) while out walking my dog in the neighborhood (just moved into Silverlake area) a few months back. I've never experienced a community acupuncture setting, but I think it's a really smart idea. I have seen Magie many times now, going 2-3 times per week. If you go two or more times per week, the sliding scale drops to $15-$40 (or $30, can't remember) and it is solely determined on what you feel that you can afford. You drop your payment in an envelope before your treatment that day. I usually feel less spasming in the muscle groups that we focus on for each treatment within a day (it has always taken awhile for treatments to settle in with me), and the treatment will last for a few days. The treatments that she gives for inflammation and nervous system balancing are also effective. I have not always had such apparent effects from acupuncture, so that tells me that Magie is amazing and really knows what she's doing. Because it is so affordable I can go multiple times a week, which is extremely helpful in this process of retraining my muscles back towards healthy functioning. Very exciting! read more

Magie is great, I've had the pleasure of picking her brain on TCM & related topics when no one else is receiving acupuncture-- humans with a plethora of information are my favorite kind. Most importantly, being able to afford acupuncture on a weekly basis has been a true gift that has kept my body & mind in balance-- even through a huge physical change-- pregnancy. With Magie I had my first experience with acupuncture and it was just amazing! I've been struggling for many years with ear pain and bladder infections. I went to see Magie with a swollen knee from a fall and a Baker's cyst that together made walking painful and difficult. Who can really resist effective, high quality health care that is also budget-friendly? I am a huge proponent of acupuncture and integrative medicine. I've been a patient of traditional chinese medicine for about 4 years off and on. It's only been around for several thousands of years. Whenever I have symptoms that nag, never go away and stump me and my western doctors, I know it's time to return to acupuncture. Most recently, I've had an issue that the good ol western docs have attempted to cure for a little over a year now through burning, freezing, lasering, scraping, and ignoring. sigh. it's not their fault, it's just that they have limited tools and knowledge when it comes to certain types of health problems. Magie is great. Knowledgable and communicative. I've been here three times, but feel my symptoms improving. She also has given me Chinese herbs to take to help ease some of my pain. It's not a quick fix, but I feel subtly better. This isn't a place to go if you're looking for frills. Magie's service has always been met with sincerity and tremendous respect. I have never once been ignored in my attempt to schedule an appt., and her text responses are typically within a few minutes. Further, I have only heard whispers of total satisfaction in-person from other clients during my visits. We ALL do re-schedule. Phillip, your review and your unfortunate attempt to discredit such an important value and resource for the community is unwarranted. You only exposed your inability to understand what community work really stands for. Your aggressive and demanding stance was the poor rating my friend. It was also my observation that it was you who lacked consideration for patients being treated at the time of your arrival, patients also possibly "in pain". Your "more important than all" disturbance, presented total disregard for two of us being seen in that moment. Shame on you, rambling about how far YOU drove and the pain YOU were in, as if no other need existed after you appeared. You arrived with the factory service expectations of a corner nail service shop, lacking courtesy and consideration for Magie's well organized and professional business model. I have had several sessions with Magie Song for various ailments: Sciatica, BPH, depression,anxiety and to stop smoking. And she needled them all away. From the acute aches and chronic pains she used her knowledge of classic Chinese acupuncture to ease away my health issues. I was skeptical at first that acupuncture would cure my flare up with Sciatica. I thought I needed deep tissue massage work, chiropratic adjustments and osteopathic stretches to rid myself of this excruciating pain! I am so glad I started coming to this place. I had never gotten Acupuncture before and was a bit skeptical that it would work. Wow! I have severe sciatica and after going to 2 Chiropractors I have gotten more relief from coming here than I did with all of those adjustments. Let me just start out and say that acupuncture works miracles. It was my first time getting it done. I woke up with a stiff neck I couldn't even move or turn my head without pain. Friend told me I should try it so I did. I looked up places online and found EPCA. So I went there and Steffan Santoro took care of me. He was so professional and made me feel comfortable. After my 20min session was over I could move my neck. I couldn't believe how the pain was gone. Well not gone but I could move my neck a lot more then I could before I went.
