We found Edelweiss German Restaurant on the map while driving home from the Virginia Safari Park and couldn't resist stopping. We arrived very hungry, and the meal definitely hit the spot. We sat outside on the porch, enjoyed the beautiful summer weather, and had a German beer with our meal. Our server was friendly and attentive, and the food came out quickly. The kids ordered the knockwurst, while we shared the German Sampler Platter so we could try a little bit of everything. We enjoyed the food, and the kids finished the meal with ice cream for dessert. Just stopped at Edelweiss restaurant and had a magnificent house special of ham hock! It was spectacular eating adventure, and quite delicious. Also got the rhubarb strawberry cake another delicious homemade decadence. This is such an awesome, authentic, real dining experience that I always enjoy when traveling on 81 in Virginia near Staunton. Certainly worth a stop. I had a lentil soup as a starter. For my entree, I had the Jagerschnitzel, which was topped with a mushroom & onion gravy & was perfectly prepared. Dinner was served family style with spaetzle, sauerkraut, red cabbage & green beans. My service was splendid & my server's accent suggested a Bavarian heritage. Driving home to the Midwest from North Carolina and stopped in Staunton, VA for the night. Chose Edelweiss for dinner. It was NOT disappointing! Matched the reviews exactly! Cute log cabin restaurant with 4 tables on the front porch and a quaint log cabin interior. A polka band was playing behind the hostess station. They were quite good. Dining room is smaller than expected with maybe 20 tables. I think there were fewer. Cute homey tablecloths on each table. Most of the tables were filled and I think ours was the only out of state license plate in the lot. The band played happy birthday twice...each time in English then in German. Birthday celebrations and localism license plates indicated this is probably a local fave. Waited a bit for first service but I think there were maybe 2 people waiting the entire dining room. We weren't in a hurry and after 7 hours on the road, appreciated a slower pace. Menu was typical German fare...lots os schnitzels. We chose to share the Rahmschnitzel since we just can't eat much anymore. Pork with a cream mushroom sauce. Dinners served with family style sweet/sout red cabbage, fennel green cabbage, green beans and spaetzle. Two fluffy dinner rolls came out first. They were quite hot and delicious. There was a $2 up charge to share but it was well worth the cost as there was too much in one serving for us to eat! We managed to down the pork and spatzle and most of the red cabbage and green beans. The green cabbage was delicious too but there was so much food we couldn't finish it all. Took a black forest cake slice back to the hotel for later. If you're heading through Staunton on I64/I81, plan a stop at Edelweiss! Well worth your time and money!!! read more

Edelweiss lived up to my (very high) expectations! I had been wanting to check them out for several years and finally made the trek out to Staunton recently. We were seated downstairs in the cabin tucked into a corner. Our server was prompt, friendly, and helpful with recommendations. I ordered the wienerschnitzel, which came with spaetzle, green beans, and two types of cabbage. I'm not sure what the juice was on the side of the plate, but it complemented the dish well. I managed to finish my whole schnitzel, which was pretty wild. It was soo good. We also ordered strawberry rhubarb cake for dessert. It was pretty good but I'd be more interested in their black forest cake next visit. Not to mention, they sell birch beer here! Such a fun, unexpected, and deeply nostalgic delight. I overheard them talking about turning the gazebo into a gingerbread house for the holidays, and I hope they do. That'd be super cute. read more

We planned our trip from Mass to SC to stop at Edelweiss German Restaurant for a late lunch. We've done this several times in the past-- love the German food and atmosphere. Unfortunately we did not get to experience either.. there were about 30-40 people there finishing up lunch at 1:35 pm when we arrived. Most of it was great. The cabbage was both purple and white and tasted as you would expect it to taste. No real surprises in flavor profile. The meat dishes were a different thing. From schnitzel to other things I can't pronounce or spell they had their own heartiness and gravy. The food was again hearty and what you expect when you see it. The meat was tender and the gravy was thick. Good stuff. The real prize was the Black Forest cake. The chocolate cake was light and fluffy and the frosting delicate and flavorful the strip of cherry sauce was tart and perfect. Amazing. Service was awesome as well. We were just looking for someplace to get a decent meal on the way home, but we were transported to Germany from the music to the environment to the food and a very good German beer list at least according to my brother-in-law Order entrée and it comes with all these wonderful sides. We are regulars here, well as regular as we can be given that we live an hour and a half away... But every opportunity we can, we dine here. Whether camping in the area, Cabin trips to the mountains, etc. will go out of our way if need be, because the food is that good. We began dining here several years ago, and our first visit was a wonderful surprise - such authenticity, delightful food, lovely service, and a cozy, truly German atmosphere - all in one lovely place. We've tried many things on the menu over the years, my husband still favors the goulash and gets it every time, even if to go so that he can try something different! The homemade Kaiser rolls are exceptional, the homemade Green Godess salad dressing can be purchased in a bottle as well, and they give it to you in a cool German beer bottle. Really everything on the menu was good, we've had the schnitzel, we've had the beef tips, I've had the fish, paprika, chicken, spinach pie... I can't find fault in anything, and it always makes choosing a bit of a dilemma! Nothing has changed here and that's the best part about it. The staff has been the same staff for years, the menu is the same and we love that, it's a tradition that we can rely on time after time and we haven't had a single visit over the years that hasn't been wonderful. read more

Found this place on accident on google maps on a road trip. Being of german decent and having lived there, I never pass up an opportunity to try a new place. The portions are massive. They give you basically two schnitzels for a single dinner order. They also do family style sides which was neat. Great atmosphere with option for outdoor seating. Looks like it could be tight when they are busy (didn't seem too big inside), but our waiter was attentive and helpful. Would stop here again for sure. read more

Wow!!! This place exceeded my expectations!!! Charming atmosphere, great , authentic German food. Fantastic deserts! My son had some wursts, I had Jagerschnitzel with a nice mushroom gravy on top, and my husband had some sliced meat. All the sauerkraut was awesome and the slightly spiced red cabbage was very yummy and authentic! The place is NOT cheap, but is SO worth it. The Authentic Black Forest Cake my son had, was inhaled, my husband's Apfel cake was authentic, and my German-style rice pudding was delicious and authentic! They elevated the pudding with a tasty meringue on top! They even had a 3 piece little polka band there playing music, the night we were there!!! What an experience! Don't go unless you are a big fan of authentic German food ( ie boiled tasteless cabbage or boiled green beans), meats swimming in excessive quantity of too-much-flour based sauce. I guess I had wrong expectation when I was craving for nostalgic taste of grilled Bavarian sausage that we used to enjoy at the market in Munich but this one was .... Yes, boiled. So it was ok for a hungry person but didn't resemble our multiple Bavarian experiences in Germany and Austria. The location is very convenient though if you are looking for a lunch stop nearby the interstate and don't want spending time driving into downtown Staunton. Definitely a better choice than any of the fast food joints nearby . In a warmer weather sit outside, the setting is very pretty and peaceful read more

Food is subtle and not overly rich, which I do like. But it did come off a little flat especially the Rahmschnitzel. The Jagersnitzel was really good though. As was the Sauerkraut, red cabbage and pretzels. The Black Forest cake was super bland,maybe I'll try the Strawberry Rhubarb next time. But overall the food was good and we'll come back to try more.
