The young man taking orders was very kind and demonstrated good service. He offered me samples and mentioned his personal favorites when I seemed indecisive about what flavor to get. The shakes were good. But all 3 of us threw out most of our meal. Cheese burger didn't have any cheese nor did it have any flavor. The onion rings were a grease pit with grease literally pouring out when I was foolish enough to try one bite. The pork was under cooked for there not big, big sweet bbq sandwich. The bun was plenty big they just forgot that there should be meat on it. The sweet BBQ sauce was awful. The place is a FAIL for food. Yummmmmmm. Klines is an institution to those who went to JMU. They have several locations around Virginia and the ice cream is sooo good. Flavors change every so often and are posted on their website. The best vanilla soft serve fresh ice cream around and the hot fudge sundaes are sooooo good. They have some fast-food BBQ, fries and burgers fare as well but I've always stuck to the ice cream. We will NEVER eat here again. We visit the area several times a year and went for ice cream tonight at Klines. Our 10 year old daughter was eating vanilla custard with hot fudge when she dropped her spoon and started screaming. Upon inspection of her spoon, we saw a ROACH!! A ROACH WAS IN HER HOT FUDGE. Klines Diary Bat is amazing, I love the decor it's happy and colorful. My favorite go to's are the Raspberry and Coconut shakes. Oh my god this place is cool and the ice cream well let me just say wow. This is actually the second time I was here. The first time was two years ago we happen to be going to the fast food place next-door and I saw this place and said I want to check it out. This time driving back from North Carolina we just decided to get off and get some gas and to stop get something to eat and it happened to be the same exit as two years ago. what's the odds of that. I just moved to Swoope and I was so excited to try this place. I've been twice now, and both times I was astonished at the way the teenage employees treat customers. The first time I went, the girls behind the counter were laughing and making fun of customers right in front of them. The same thing happened the second time I went, only this time one of the girls very obviously pointed at me as they laughed and messed around while making my order. Not to mention when they're asked "How are you?" they ignore you and rush you to order. Absolutely no customer service at this place, which is pretty sad considering it could be amazing. The custard is delicious and the menu has great options. But unfortunately I don't think I will ever return since I had such a bad experience, even after giving it a second try. Really bad customer service. Stood in line behind people ordering for 10 mins, fine. Then they just close the window without saying anything to us. Waited for them to reopen the window assuming they're just getting the previous order together. Kline's is a staple ice cream place in the valley and has a great vintage drive in feel. It was my first time there and I was a bit disappointed to discover that they only serve 3 flavors (vanilla, chocolate and a rotating flavor of the week). This week was cherry chocolate chunk which was in fact delicious. However their ice cream is super soft serve but still scooped onto the cone ??... the end result (especially in the super heat) was a super melt-y mess that had to be slurped down super quick. read more

Kline's is an institution in the Shenandoah Valley. The signature ice cream, made on site each day, is worth trying and will likely be a highlight of your day. The ice cream is kind of like soft-serve. It's very easy to eat and very creamy. Because its made on-site, the selection of flavors is limited, but that's not a deal-breaker. There are plenty of other frozen confections if ice cream is not your thing. An adjacent section of the kitchen serves what's advertised as "real Caroilina BBQ" but I didn't try it. The dining area is semi-enclosed. There are large garage doors on the side that can be opened in the summer to make it open-air, but it's heated so that it can be enjoyable in the winter. Kline's Dairy Bar is excellent ice cream in a fun atmosphere. I highly recommend a visit. read more

I don't know how you can not love this place! As a JMU alum (now living in Atlanta) I make a point to stop at Kline's whenever we are in the area. We stopped at this location to get a pumpkin spice cone on our way home to visit for Thanksgiving. Surprisingly, they also had chocolate peanut butter which is my husband's fave (making the stop an easy sell hah). Both were outstanding, which is no surprise to me! I love supporting local places especially when they are so nostalgic for me. I left JMU 12 years ago and still have a soft spot for Kilne's. Ice cream "speciality" flavors have changed recently. I honestly don't enjoy them as much now. For example I got chocolate peanut butter today and it tasted just like plain peanut butter icecream AND WAS LOADED WITH CHOPPED PEANUTS. The old recipe was a dark brown (chocolate) color with no nuts. Now it's tan beige color with nuts. For this reason I won't be ordering this flavor again. Also was handed a cracked waffle cone. Stopped here this evening. Hubby had a chocolate shake - said it wasn't good. I had a 2-scoop mint-chocolate chip cone. The serving size of my cone was enormous; however, the quality of the ice cream was very sub-par. I couldn't finish mine because it tasted artificial, it was very soft, and the taste just wasn't good. Ended up tossing about 70% of the cone in the trash which got a couple comments from those who were eating there (outside in the covered dining area). When we were ordering, I asked the two girls working there if the ice cream was artificially-flavored or natural. None knew. They finally said, "It's puree, so it must be natural." I don't think so!
