As career restaurateurs (now retired) owners of a fine-dining California cuisine rustic restaurant of our own, we were most impressed by our complete dining experience at The Stone Cliff Inn. The atmosphere is spectacular (reminding us of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite) as was the food and service. The four of us ordered fairly standard faire for lunch...sandwiches and a salad entree. Everything was prepared perfectly both in taste and appearance. The service, too, was beyond reproach. Our primary server, Marianne and her attendants were excellent. The basics of attentive table-side service (prompt order-taking, delivery, beverage refills, plate clearing, dessert suggestions & check presentation) were all conducted in a comfortable professional style. I, too, would be remiss if I didn't comment on my being extremely impressed that every single staff member with whom I made eye contact addressed me with a friendly "hello" and a smile from ear-to-ear. Quality of the steak was only marginal. Tough to cut. Service was fine.

But I understand the focus of this restaurant to be fresh, in-season food, locally sourced, vegetable-forward, French-inspired. It's a neat location near Mt Tabor. There's not a lot nearby, so it feels like a destination. There is a small parking lot next door, which is convenient. You enter through their market/oyster bar. There's not an immediately clear check-in table. And you're walked through the back to the other side where the Coquine dining room is. It feels a tad underwhelming - perhaps too casual for the finer dining expectation. Additionally, the person who greeted us was a tad surly. Service was friendlier during dinner but a little less hands-on than I'd like. I liked the design of the restaurant. Good lighting, natural decor, red countertop. They are a "zero foodprint" restaurant so the napkins and coasters are washable, serving utensils are wood, etc. It gave a very organic feel. Okay that said! We ordered the following à la carte: -Half dozen oysters (fun toppings - pomegranate gelee) -Bread and butter (normal, would skip next time) -Roasted carrots -Shaved cauliflower salad -Potato gnocchi -Pan seared black cod (our favorite) -Citrus tart (unique) Everything was tasty: well prepared, beautiful to look at, fun sauces and elements to discover. It might have been too many cold dishes at the start. We also got a half dozen cookies to go. I've heard that these are the best cookies in the city. They have nuts, which is an immediate disqualifier for me, but even without that I'm not sure they live up to the hype. Very delicious? Sure. Best in the city? I don't know about that. Overall this was a good meal, in a nice atmosphere. It felt very "Pacific Northwest." Worth a visit if you appreciate seasonal, ingredient-driven dining.

Before entering and without knowing anything about Wildfin, I was expecting the Chart House or even McCormick & Schmick. However it's more similar to a high-end Bonefish Grille or stepped down Chart House. More margarita and house wine vs martini and select wines. Has a national chain feel. The menu has many seafood options but most are combinations with pasta, cream sauce, salad, sandwich or fried. The more naked fish selection is limited to salmon, steelhead and trout. Outside of this is a large selection of standard menu items like burgers, appetizers, and obligatory sampling of sushi options. Salads are limited and oddly placed throughout the menu. We ordered the miso black cod, harvest salad, a cup of seafood chowder, tacos and wine. The miso black cod was average for $38. I cook a lot of fish at home that's moist and flaky in the middle and charred outside. I believe this was steamed, overdone and a less generous size. The tacos were tasty with beef, grilled fish and pork belly (although they were out of pork). And the harvest salad was refreshing and fairly light. The wine list was limited and by the glass selections were somewhat standard. Our server (the bartender) knew nothing about the wine but allowed us to taste options. We asked for 9 oz and received what looked like at least 12 oz. In fact we couldn't drink it all. Overall the meal wasn't memorable and if we did return it would be for a drink, bar bites and maybe a burger.

The lobster bisque was okay, not creamy and felt more like a tomato soup with lobster chunks. Ahi tostadas were incredibly tiny - 3 pieces for $15. The octopus was good but only a few pieces with lots of potatoes inside - again value not there. The sturgeon was delicious but the beans were a bit rough. Decently executed but $44 for this is quite steep. One plus is that we ate right after social hour where hotel guests get free small bites and various wines that is more or less unlimited so that saved a bit of money on alcohol For breakfast, we had a mushroom hash which was very salty. The King Tide omelette was delicious - egg was a bit overcooked but the inside is creamy with a good amount of lobster - which it has to be for $32. We also got lemon ricotta donuts freshly fried which was also delicious. Service is where the reviews tank. If they are charging such high prices, the service must be amazing. However, it felt quite the opposite. During dinner, no one took away plates and so we ended up presented the bill with dirty plates stacked high on the table - very unclassy look. It took a while to flag the server down. For breakfast, most of the tables are empty but they forced us to wait 15 minutes at the sofa which was occupied so we had to awkwardly stand the whole duration. It would have been better if they seated us with menus and give us a heads up they are backed up and would need some time to serve us, so that way we can decide what to order in the meanwhile. Also, unlike the other tables, they never proactively gave water. Such huge misses in service felt like they are complacent that they get the 22% service charge and not try...
