I was referred here by my vegetarian friends who believe this to be the best place to get produce. They had a very diverse collection of fruits and vegetables and they were of good quality. My friends have been telling me to check out Edgewater Produce for months now and I am housesitting two blocks away so I decided to go check it out. WOW! The fact that I can get 2 avocados for $1.50 when they are $2 each at Jewel is just amazing!! The green peppers were twice as big and half the price as the ones at Jewel. Yes it may be a tad small and there are certain things that you can not get here but I can get all of my basics here. On 2/18/17, I made a purchase at Edgewater Produce. The cashier had difficulty with processing of my card. They gave me a copy of the receipt and said to bring that wiht me if there was an error. I'm disappointed in the clerical error, charging my debit card twice, the way the cashier handled it, and then have to return 4 times to have it corrected. Still waiting. There are too many produce stores in the area to continue to support a business that does not honor their word, or trust their customers. read more

I love this place. Their produce is super cheap, fresh, and better than what you'd find at Jewel or Dominicks. It blows away places like Cermak Produce in terms of quality and freshness, yet it's just as cheap (or cheaper). I make the trek here from Humboldt Park once a week to stock up on fruits and veggies. I absolutely love this grocery store! The produce is always fresh and very reasonably priced. Friendly staff. I never spend more than 15-20 dollars and leave with a week's worth of fruits and vegetables (and I eat a lot of produce!) This is why I live in the city. Produce markets, with good fruits & veggies reasonably priced. How often do I leave with bags of stuff for under $20? Small but quite adequate ethnic foods - greek yogurt that Jewel/Dom. doesn't carry anyway, and real meats, parts and all. And the yummy nuts & chocolate pretzels are bonus. Only been here once since I don't live far north, but had a pretty great experience. Fantastic for fresh produce, the prices beat about 80-90 % of other produce at grocery stores in Chi, so I would definitely recommend it for that. Canned products and pastas are pretty close to the same price as others. I heard their meats were fantastic before I went, so we decided to buy a flank steak for a dinner party, and it did look like a good cut when we got it, as did many of their other meats. When we marinated and cooked it, it still turned out pretty well, but wasn't as tender as we would have hoped and was a little too chewy. Not much fat though, which is a plus. So, my meat experience didn't match up with that of many others I have spoke with, but it wasn't a bad experience and it was only the first time. Overall, fantastic for produce and would recommend it with 4 stars for that main reason. read more

Awesome neighborhood grocer! Surprising what they pack into that little space. Weisswurst and coconut flakes were on my list this week (don't ask) and I figured no chance, but they had both. And, as others have mentioned, the produce is excellent and their meat selection too. Especially when you compare it to the truly awful selection across the street. Love this place. read more

Like many here, I've said so long to crappy Jewel produce. Whenever I grocery shop now, I stop at Edgewater Produce first then to Jewel for the non-perishables. Love to have lots of limes in my house. Don't know why, just do. So I stop at EP and they're 20 for a dollar. At Jewel? Fifty-five cents a piece, and they're yellowish-brown and gross. It makes me happy to go here. If you never have tried the jarred pickles that balance on top of one of the produce displays, TRY THEM! Real crowd pleaser. read more

This place is very clean and well organized compared to some other low cost produce places I've been to. They have a good selection for the size of the store (hooray for not just having the bland apple trio of Granny Smiths, Red Delicious, and Golden Delicious!). For me, the thing that won me over was their cheap and very fresh heads of romaine lettuce that didn't force me to remove the first ten layers of wilted leaves. There are also plenty of Hispanic products you won't find at the big 'chain stores'. Home-made guacomole and salsa for those impromptu house parties. And for you lucky ones reading this review, Edgewater Produce has a "secret-section" within the store where you can find sizeable quantities of produce for less than $1. Yes, I'll rate it again. Why pay $2.79 for "green" leaf lettuce across the street with brown edges when you can get true GREEN leaf lettuce here for $1.49? Doesn't make sense to me but nor does paying 350K for a "gut rehab" condo in a neighborhood that has a grocery store the caliber of that Jewel. Anyway, Edgewater Produce is great. I love it. My last full bag was $3.71 out the door. I'm sure Yelp will spam and delete me from their site again as soon as I give more than two well warranted 1 star reviews, but what the heck. Fresh produce, friendly staff, an excellent butcher, this is the kind of supermercado I missed living in the suburbs. Between costco and here all the staples are taken care of - the only reason to go anywhere else is for boutique spices or cheeses. Great prices, too. Certain neighborhoods on the northside, especially within Lincoln Square and Andersonville, have very few Mexican supermercados. Edgewater Produce is one of the few that exists and continues to carry great, fresh products at reasonable prices. Prior to have a taco dinner party at my house, I come here and purchase their aracheras en la maquina (tenderized skirt steaks) and fajita-style chicken with vegetables from the butcher. It tastes extremely authentic compared to anything I would find at Jewel or Dominicks. If you need anything found in Mexico or Latin America, you will most likely find it here (Chocolate Caliente, Jarritos, tropical fruits, Mexican Coca Cola [in the glass bottle of course]). Heck, the tortillas come directly from the factories still piping warm off the press. If you're looking to purchase produce for your house, or have a fiesta, this is the place. Keep in mind that common house products like toilet paper and even Suavitel are cheaper elsewhere. read more

That Jewel must be on crack if they think people should pay $1 for one lime/lemon or their ever-sneaky ad (10 for 10).
