A long time business in the community. It opened in 2004 at this location. A few hard to find specialties like Caribbean, Latin, and West African ingredients can be found. They also have hot food service. Has quite a lot inside. It's located on Morse Avenue at Greenview and is popular with many people. Upon checking out.. no cashiers were at a register. ONLY SELF CHECKOUT. A 70 year old or so women was also checking out. This poor woman could be your parents or an elderly person you know. The manager here wanted to save what $15 so another staff member could be stocking a shelf? Crazy. Absolutely insane. This store is pretty decent overall, but the levels of disrespect this shows for your own staff and your community is just unreal. Whoever staffed the store that night should be deeply ashamed of themselves. The stockholders are gonna be ok. Put a working staff member on registers at all times period. What if someone got injured? The self checkout here has a TINY spot to put your bag. Move the bag a bit and the scale freaks out. I can think of endless reasons for a cashier to be working at all times. Think of members of your community who need help if you run a FOOD STORE. Think of ways to improve your business rather than screwing customers. What about people who are neurodivergent and have disabilities? All to save like $100 a week. The butcher YaYa is excellent and ground my chicken breast fresh and also packed it very nice so I didn't have to re-package it at home before freezing it. I went to several other butchers who wouldn't pack the meat how I asked but YaYa without any hesitation agreed to do the job. They have a great selection of spices and also several ethnic breads made fresh locally that you can't find at your regular grocery store. Fo those who drive, free parking upstairs with an elevator is a plus. I bring my own folding mini-cart to bypass the chronic shortage of carts and baskets They're still struggling with rolling post-pandemic shortages, as most stores are. But, the quality of their meat, fresh fruit and vegetables they have remains excellent. Canned goods and snacks are low priced and decent too. Frozen items vary in quality. Frozen steamed veggies are uniformly good values and tasty - but lately, unavailable for weeks at a time. Tip: shop on rainy/snowing days when most locals stay home and you'll zip thru the checkout line. On nice days - particularly when delivery shoppers are crowding the place, snapping up all the products, and clogging checkout lines with overloaded carts - it can be a hassle. (Also, a testimony to the good values here.) I go out of my way to be nice to the harried staff, and with very few exceptions they respond in a friendly manner. I also tap my credit card as soon as the cashier scans my first item, so the line moves faster for those behind me. If you want a huge selection of items in a quiet, spacious store, Whole Foods is a few blocks away. Their well-maintained produce section is always clean and stocked, their staff is really kind and considerate, and you can spend about an hour just looking at the jam-packed aisles. You might not find what you're looking for if you're shopping for some typical American basics, but spend a little extra time checking out the global cuisine. They have an impressive pepper selection, lots of great dairy choices from all over the world, an absolutely crazy selection of smoked fish and herring, lots of different kinds of meats and an amazing deli with insane deals on domestic, bulgarian, and greek feta as well as a killer olive selection. Ryes from local bakeries, so many specialty items and a really fun wall of Russian candies that are just beautiful to look at. They have expanded their meat counter and have an on-site butcher who's happy to cut your meat for you as you wait. Right now during Coronavirus I've noticed that they've been excellent at staying consistently restocked, keeping their hours, and staff has been nothing but courteous.
