What a disappointment... everything I purchased last week in the produce department was past its prime ! ROMAINE LETTUCE Rust spots. top of leaves were limp. STRAWBERRIES They were a beautiful rich, red color. However, very overripe. ORANGES. The skin was extremely thick leaving much less fruit inside. BANANAS. They were fine. COCKTAIL TOMATOES.... Only $.99. In two days their lifespan was over. ODOR IN MEAT DEPT. I agree with another reviewer who commented that the odor as you walk by the meat and fish department indicates something is not right . COOKIES and PASTRIES. .... First, I want to thank Yelp for actually keeping honest reviews on their sites. I have seen at least four one-star reviews in the past two days on Google Reviews, and Google keeps deleting anything that's not a five-star review of this grocery store even though the complaints are the same. The women cashiers are rude every single time. Entirely too many cashiers and aisle employees get an attitude or ignore you if you don't speak Spanish. (The guys are apologetic about the language barrier, but the women [once again] are hostile.) You're basically on your own. I'm still shaking my head over how I was treated for losing my keys and wanting a Customer Service lady to just hand them to me instead of me going behind the employee-only property to do it myself. The one good thing I can say that came out of this was that their behavior from staff made me start REALLY looking around at other local grocers. I found three stores that I ignored for six straight years and am a regular at one of them 95% of the time since August of last year. So in a weird way, I guess I have to thank them for making me attention to other businesses. But Google keeps deleting reviews from customers all saying the SAME thing. It's weird to me that the women are so mean, but the male managers and male employees are fairly cool. As a woman, this is nuts to me. These reviewers/shoppers don't know each other, and we can't all be wrong. At some point, management is going to have to acknowledge the discrimination going on in this store. From the comments that were deleted, white people and black people are consistently complaining about this. I'm honestly curious how non-Spanish speaking Latino/a are treated. There was an incident that happened to me here last summer and it was all caught on camera. Some super ignorant lady decided to take a few carts and push them towards my brand new SUV as I was exiting the parking lot and there was no way I could have avoided it as I was sandwiched between a car before me and behind me. I got into a verbal exchange with some of the employees but cooled down later on. That lady was nowhere to be found in the store a few minutes later after we viewed security cams. She was clearly seen on surveillance cameras aggressively taking the two carts out and calmly watching the carts collide into my side door instead of chasing after them to prevent the accident. After that, the lady walks into the store and starts laughing like an obnoxious idiot! I had to pay almost $900.00 for the damage caused by this ignorant individual and it was pretty unfortunate but I got it fixed and paid out of my pocket. I think Cermak should have been held responsible for it since it did happen in their parking lot with their cart but I decided to just get it fixed on my own. At the end of the day the stupid lady who did it ended up getting away with it. The incident left a bad taste in my mouth for months but I couldn't stay away because I love this grocery store but the female cashiers need to adjust their attitudes. I was checking out and pushing my cart forward to get it out of the way and this female employee walks towards the cart trying to squeeze through with an attitude and didn't bother saying excuse me. The other latina cashier rang my groceries with a bigger attitude. I think when you're an employee at a grocery store or any business, you should always have a great attitude because you want customers to keep coming back! Please train your employees how to be courteous individuals and don't ring my groceries up with an eye roll! I e been a regular customer at this market for a decade. They handled the pandemic well, customer service is always positive, and the selection is great. I just had an experience, and let the manager know but she said nothing. Here's what happened: I was at checkout, and noticed a zucchini in my cart was rather damaged, so I VERY politely said " I'm sorry, I don't want this ... " and I showed the cashier the damage. What happened next was out of a Mean Girls script. Eye-rolling, sigh, judge snark spewed from the cashier. Then I said, "ok, whatever, I'll buy it." And in snarky-slow-motion she stared at me with more teenage-judgement from a grown-up person. Slowly reached for the zucchini like I had just killed her parents with a dash of boredom and yes, more snark. Ok, so I'm a middle-aged white woman. Did she put me in a "Karen" box? Answer, oh yes she did. I'm done with this store. Aldi is better and they don't care if you don't fit a certain profile, they're prices are better, and the service is stellar. I've worked in the service industry for decades but this level of behavior felt racially charged and I usually don't see that because I'm SO polite, patient, and kind when talking to people in low-paid service job because I know how hard their positions are. If you're Latino/a, I'm sure this is a great place for you ... If you look ok like a Karen, don't bother. I didn't need that heavy negative vibe in a beautiful sunny day in Chicago. Overcharged 3 times recently and very negative experience at store on Damen in Roger's Park when I brought my receipt. Receipt gives item details and store shelves still have the lower price but manager said I have to bring item back so he can see it. This place actually seems pretty solid from the outside and the employees are usually pretty friendly and genuine. But then you go in and you see the dates on things and it makes you wonder. Have attached a photo, I went in on July 21 and saw that they had macaroni salad that was packed on the 2nd, and has an expiration date of the 30th. So I go to this store a lot as it's my only option for groceries I don't have trek a mile and half for. I like the store, really and the people who work there have always been kind and courteous but today I had an awful experience where a my card's chip wasn't reading properly and a group of male customers behind me were kind of like... watching me try to make it work over and over and making noises of disapproval when it didn't work. They laughed when I kinda lost my cool when they cheered that it worked. It was just inappropriate. I didn't appreciate the unwanted interaction from kinda rowdy grown men who I had no association with. I hope im not just being touchy. When it's busy, be aware of who you are in line with. I love this store. I've never been happier having a nice store in the neighbor that sells not on regular items, but love the wide selection of ethnics food items. I'm a big fan of the Food Network and get my inspiration from the shows. If a specialty item is called for, more than likely I can find it. I love the produce section. A lot of exotic fruits and veggies, I love trying new things. The meat section is always a good deal. They have Halal meats and they will trim your meat, to your liking. Sometimes, I find myself wandering down each aisle just to see what they have. They have a taqueria that makes some really good tacos and burritos. The deli counter has plenty of meats and cheeses. And the olive bar is awesome and I can eat them by the fistful. I was making a Carne Guisada and never made it before. I guess I was looking really confused and an awesome lady came over to me and asked me what I was making. I showed her the recipe and she personally walked me around the store to get ingredients, giving me advice on how to prepare it her way. I made the recipe and it was awesome. Beware when shopping here, they will always "make a mistake" and overcharge you. Sometimes it's 20 cents or 60 cents, and sometimes up to $3. They are hopping you don't notice or only notice once you get home. They hope it is too much of a big deal to go back for 35 cents and so you will probably let it slide. They can make thousands of dollars a week doing this, which is why they do it. Another thing they do is have the same item in 2 different places on the shelves with 2 different prices. Also they will sometimes switch the prices on the shelves so you think you are buying the cheaper of the 2 brands sitting side by side until you realize the price for the one on the left goes with the item on the right, and vice versa. It's the grocery store that ruined all other grocery stores for us. After a tip from a friend and fellow Yelper (S/O Kate F!) we decided to check out Cermak on a Sunday spent on the North Side. Wow am I glad we did. All the produce you could ever want, and it's cheap! The quality was amazing, too. I didn't have to pick through the green onion to find non-slimy bunches. Apples weren't bruised. The spinach and kale were crisp and bright green. My boyfriend and I frequently lost each other because we would get distracted by yet another shiny tower of fruit. Once we got past the produce we found a huge selection of Mexican and Asian grocery items. All the hot sauce varieties you could ever need! We've been most impressed with the pre-seasoned Al Pastor Chicken Taco Meat and the fresh spicy salsa from the deli area. My spice-averse boyfriend also strongly promotes the fresh mango salsa. The best part? Our mouths dropped at the checkout. We had mentally tallied a total much larger than what the actual cost was. We can't wait to go back and I've been singing Cermak's praises to all my friends in the meantime. read more

I had never heard of Cermak Fresh Market before they came to the northside, and although I'd passed this store many times, I'd never been. It's on Ridge/Pratt where a Dominicks used to be, and today on the way home with hubby, he turned in here so we could pick up ONE item that we needed for dinner. We were 1st blown away by the huge produce section, then all of the ethnic food aisles, an impressive meat section...with larger, family size packages if needed!, (Can't get those at Trader Joe's) low prices, and virtually every type of food station that my beloved Mariano's has!! (Bakey, gelato, prepared foods, pizza, sushi, salad bar, hot food bar, liquor, you name it!!) As I mentioned, it's the same space that Dominicks was in, yet now it seems a lot bigger. We toured the store, salivating over fresh sushi, and giant cupcakes and huge, fresh cheesecake slices, both for $1.99 each! I'm talking about the jumbo cupcakes that are easily $3-4 a piece at bakeries!! So we ended up with more than just the ONE item we came in for (which, by the way was fresh cauliflower...and it was 69 cents a pound...) You should bring your own bag. They charge 10 cents for their plastic bags (which are sturdy) yet they take 5 cents off your future bills if you reuse them. We were very impressed! We will definitely be shopping here!! read more

This place definitely LOOKS a lot better than some other Dominick's conversions that I've seen (I'm looking at you, Northfield Mariano's). But IS it better? Not really. The produce is slightly more expensive than Mariano's, though of comparable quality. They sell fresh juices such as orange, carrot-orange, beet-carrot-apple, and pineapple-orange-papaya (yum). Many of the packaged foods skew ethnic (a wide variety, not just Mexican and Eastern European), which is fine, but not items for which I typically shop. But the dealbreaker for me is the bakery--there are no fresh baked goods in the morning. You open at 7, and by 7:15 there are still no baked items out? Massive fail. If you can't sell me a bagel for my morning commute, there is absolutely no reason for me to stop by. I tried again a week later around 7:20 and they were just putting out some muffins but nothing else yet. Adios. read more

What I have noticed over the last few visits is the terrible customer service! You have to force people to speak to you and the rolling of the eyes and scowl on everyone's faces this last visit was hard to ignore. From the deli person to the check out girl. Man do I wish I had caught her name. 2:20ish pm today 3/18 4th or so register from the express. The look of disdain and disgust in this young woman's face made me cringe. I was pretty let down visiting Cermak. The produce was extremely picked over and what they had left was not fresh. It took me forever to try to find fruit and veggies that weren't withered or moldy looking. On top of it,, they are kind of pricey for what you get. Many times you may think it's a deal on certain things but they are just pawning off under ripe or over ripe fruit. I also found everything there very disorganized and impossible to find products. When you ask the workers were are typical items such as tortilla chips, they look puzzled. Too many awesome grocery stores to go to then to feel obligated to go here! This review is of the Cermak Fresh Market at 6623 N. Damen on the Rogers Park/Edgwater boundary. We tried this as an alternative to the nearby Devon Market (smaller, but with great produce), Walmart in Skokie and Food4Less in Evanston (the local budget division of Kroger), both of which are farther away but have better prices on staples. I don't think this is likely to become our principal or even a regular stop. Lots of ethnic food, including Indian, Mexican, and Eastern European, great fresh meats, but floral is negligible and American canned and packaged goods are overpriced, with few store brands. This review would rate three stars had we not purchased two pint boxes of fresh strawberries yesterday at the head of the produce section, on sale for ninety-nine cents apiece. They went straight into the fridge, but were moldy today! They had to go into the garbage. We're very disappointed, having lived in Rogers Park for over thirty years and never encountered bad strawberries before. Apparently the berries were not kept cold or were too old. Since we live in an area where ethnic foods and produce like good fresh berries or jicama are easy to find, this place holds no particular advantage for us. (Edited to Add): Looking at older reviews, I'm astonished at the number of people who urged calling the Health Department. This has always been my place to shop for great produce plus it's cheap. I always see great deals such as large pints of strawberries for 99 cents or the big boxes for 2 for $4.00. They have a huge selection of both organic and regular vegetables. You can get a variety of meat and can also choose between regular or halal chicken. Their deli and cheese section is comparable to a Mariano's or Jewel and they offer cooked items. You can also find the bakery offers cakes, cannoli's, cupcakes, cookies, bolillos, conchas and empanada style pastries. I'm also happy they carry a good amount of beers and wine. I don't have to run to another store as they carry it all. The registers are always long but they move fast. Keep your eyes focused on the windows cause they get you with the isles full of soda or candy. read more

I really enjoyed strolling around this supermarket. Got curious after a client said it was weird, enough to grab my attention. The place is awesome. As you walk in, you are in the produce section. Endless selection of vegetables and fruits, some known others unknown to me. The place is a collection of groceries from different countries guessing, representing the melting pot Chicago is. The meat and seafood area was really well stock and clean. They have a hot station which has from gyros to Chile relleno. Salad bar was limited but that is ok.
