Gotta admit - I struggled with this one. I ended up getting the West Indies seafood chowder for an appetizer. It was...good...not great. Had a slight kick to it (spice wise) but very little evidence of actual seafood in it. After much debate about what to get for a main course (and after seeing what other patrons got at the bar where I sat), I decided to get the Moroccan salad with salmon. Again...it was good...not great. I cook way better salmon at home on a cedar plank over real charcoal, so maybe I'm being unfair here? I dunno. The salad itself was heavy on arugula, which I'm not a huge fan of. Which is odd, because I love the flavor of pepper! Anyway, the menu made it sound like it was more fennel-oriented, so... Ended up capping off the meal with the blackberry key lime pie. It was quite tasty. Not the best key lime pie I've ever had, but good. As to the atmosphere, it's nice. My girlfriend has actually convinced me several times that we shouldn't come here because we weren't dressed well enough. Well, let me just say: I saw several guys here wearing jeans, fishing shirts, and ball caps and they fit right in. So: not stuffy at all! Bottom line, it's a good, not great place to grab a meal. I love that it's off the beaten path (i.e., not close to Folly Road). Will def come back with my girlfriend next time. Might try the swordfish or maybe the meatballs next time. read more

They did do a great job given it is next to some street that gets traffic even though it's a side street. Cute patio area. We went to celebrate our anniversary (put that in the res) and they congratulated at checkin. Service was friendly and attentive. Dog friendly patio! We saw a lot of families with young kids. There is a gravel parking lot that makes getting to Edison fairly easy. They have a nice patio decoration with Edison bulbs outside with minimal tables. This is far enough away from downtown and the main sections of James Island that you don't need to worry about traffic (unless school is in session then it can be a bit much.) Upon entry there was a very weird smell (perhaps a strong cleaning product) that was off putting but otherwise, the restaurant itself is visually pleasing. My friend and I were sat at a two-top by the window where we started the evening off with a bottle of red wine and the Fromage & Fig app. Both of these (pictured) were delicious! We continued with the Moroccan salad and Blackstrap Braised Beef Short Ribs. I thought the salad was light, flavorful, and refreshing. Personally, I did not care for the bbq sauce on the short rib and thought it took away from the dish. (Yes I realize that's where the dish gets its name. The grits and Brussels sprouts as the side dish were very good however. Overall prices on the menu are fair and about what you expect to pay in Charleston. Our server, Samantha, was an absolute sweetheart! She was super knowledgeable of the menu and had solid recommendations (like adding salmon to the Moroccan salad!). Omg. I feel like I hadn't had a meal this good in so long. This was unreal. The staff was also extremely friendly, gave us bar recommendations and our friend a complimentary dessert of her choosing. The bacon wrapped dates were insane. So good. I think about them weekly now. And we all got the same entree cause we heard how good it was from staff there as well as a friend's mom. We especially loved the shrimp cavatelli and the AHmazing braised short ribs perfectly cooked over Gouda grits with crunchy onion rings and beautifully presented. The cocktails were inventive and well-balanced, and the dessert was the perfect ending to an unforgettable dining experience. We got the Chocolate Dome with the table side hot Carmel poured over top! The Blood Orange cheesecake was very good but some chocolate drizzle on there would have taken it to the next level. Edison is a true gem on James Island--whether you're a local or just visiting Charleston, this place is well worth a visit. Open only 4-9pm so definitely call for reservations. This is such a cool little place tucked away on James Island. This was my first visit and I really enjoyed it. Our waitress Paula was great and did an amazing job explaining and recommending some of her favorites. Excellent, upscale food, yet casual restaurant that is off the beaten path. You can find Edison's not far out of the way, but clearly off the beaten path, in an older neighborhood on James Island. Edison's is a Quiet Atmosphere so you can hear conversation, with tables not sitting on top of each other. There is also outdoors, that would be really nice in the spring/fall or after the sun goes down. Service was very friendly, although we both thought the food came out a little to quickly for us to just relax and enjoy the atmosphere and conversations. The wife and I split 2 appetizers that included: 1. Vietnamese Pho Tacos. This is exactly as described, a bowl of Pho, (Without the broth), with small chunks of Pork, glass noodles, cilantro, sprouts, ginger aioli, sriracha and a splash of Hoisin Sauce. The wife claimed it to be the best Taco she ever had, and would have been happy just with a few of these for her main dinner 2. A plate of perfectly fried oysters, on a bed of corn remoulade, with a spicy pickled okra we both really liked, and a spicy yellow sriracha. This was a well-balanced yummy dish. For our main dinner the wife ordered the Pan Seared Scallops. The jumbo scallops had a great sear and served at the right temperature. They were served on toasted pearl pasta and a green potato-leek puree. I can't ever remember having toasted pearl pasta, but they added a good and unique texture I ordered the Blackstrap Braised Beef Short Ribs. Something else new and amazing to my pallet was Blackstrap BBQ. These Short Ribs were as tender as can be, and the BBQ sauce had a wonderful Salty yet sweet flavor. The bed of Gouda grits was creamy and out of this world. There were bits of crispy Brussels sprouts that was perfect with the BBQ sauce. And to top this all of there were real homemade onion rings. I would get a solid 3.5. I came here on a Wednesday with my mom, which is wine Wednesday so all bottles of wine are half price which was a great deal. We sat on the patio in May so it was a really nice night. Beware of the bugs with all of the lights once the sun goes down though. We did end up having to move inside. I had, the braised short ribs which was decent. It came on grits so the texture was an interesting one. With nothing substantial to crunch on it was a very mushy dish. My mom had the Moroccan salad with salmon, which was delicious. Our server was amazing and helped us move inside after the bugs came out. When we did decide to move inside, we ended up getting the chocolate bulb, which was a very pretty presentation! read more

After walking through James Island Park for a few hours, we were tired and hungry and sort of stumbled onto The Edison at their 4 pm opening. We were heartily greeted by Joshua, who made it great - so much fun! He explained so many of the dishes to us and that actually made it hard to decide (haha) but was truly very helpful. How did I miss this place? Great food and close to Folly. It is am absolute must. It is southern food meets a real chef to create something special. A big focus on local ingredients. We had the charcuterie app, the salmon and the short ribs. Wednesdays are half off wine bottles. The wine is a decent deal, the rest, I'm not sure it's worth the hype. Charcuterie cheeses weren't artisan cheeses, but more so prepackaged grocery bought sliced variety pack. The ribs had ok texture but the sauce was straight up barbecue off of a bottle. I would have expected something just a touch more refined. My wife says the salmon was under seasoned. We have been to this place multiple times before and keep trying to say it's better than what it really is, unfortunately. Don't think will be back with all the options around JI. Blown away by this restaurant! Can't believe I didn't make it there sooner! Atmosphere is perfect for date night or a nicer night out with family or friends. It's just a bit of an industrial decor (hence the name) but feels cozy and the outdoor space is just charming. Service was great, staff was attentive and checked in on us frequently and felt like they were adding a personal touch in the conversations. Food was incredible. The Thai chicken noodle soup was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. The fromage & fig appetizer came with the right amount of bread and was an explosion of rich flavors - our server told us this was also often ordered for dessert. This little gem is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood on James Island. I love the vibe of the restaurant - very clean, bright, fancy, and full of people pretty dressed up/celebrating occasions. The menu is super unique and offers a variety of foods and prices. We started with the Tandoori skewers which were fantastic. I ordered the Edison grilled cheese, which was OK, but nothing special. It was described as a truffle butter grilled cheese, but I didn't taste any truffle in the dish. The herb fries were fantastic and came out piping hot. My husband got the seafood and grits which he described as 10/10. Our server convinced us to try their famous Edison bulb dessert, which I thought was very fairly priced at $10. A chocolate bulb covers a scoop of ice cream on top of a brownie. The server pours hot caramel over the chocolate bulb which then melts into a delicious mess. I loved the theatrics of the dessert and of course it was also delicious. This would be a fun place to celebrate a birthday/anniversary! I went here with my husband and my parents when we visited them in Folly Beach. It was only a 13 minute drive. They had local beer options and some nice wine options. They do half off bottles of wine on Wednesdays which is nice. My Mom had the chicken harissa special. Chicken thighs with harissa and couscous. It wasn't very spicy which is nice. My Dad had the burger. My husband had the chicken and waffles and I had the short ribs. The portions are pretty large, we easily will get two meals out of the dishes. I also ordered the pistachio and strawberry crepes for dessert. It was pretty intensely sweet, but I was really thrilled to see a southern restaurant taking a chance like this. If crepes aren't your thing, they have several other sweet options. There is a patio outside with twinkle lights that looks lovely for next time. Things to consider, they don't have a liquor license because they are very close to a school, it can be quite loud (all three of the people I was with wear hearing aids), so it can be tough to hear. And, they discourage substitutions on their dishes unless there is an allergy. read more

Great salad with a combination of arugula-frisée salad mix, dates, walnuts,feta and a wonderful light dressing. For dinner I had the Braised Short Ribs. They were cooked to perfection served over smoked Gouda grits. It was delicious, however I would have preferred alittle less BBQ sauce.
