I have been a patient of Dr. Hom's for years. I appreciate him because he --Listens --Is a great dentist, skilled at his profession --Does no shaming, rather offers informed suggestions --Provides useful information and answers questions comprehensively without condescension or impatience --Has an easy and understated sense of humor In addition, Carina coordinates the office. She's a gem: a knowledgable dentistry professional who genuinely cares about scheduling and working optimally with your insurance to make the care of your teeth as affordable as possible. If we could all strive to have her attitude, we would all be happier and the world would be a better place. Her warmth has helped me many times. Anecdote: After 6 months with a periodontist (also a good experience if not shell-shocking because of the cost) getting my jaw prepped for an implant, Dr. Hom helped me choose the color of my new tooth, and he listened to my input while offering his expertise, and that's a rare talent. He has always been respectful when I've expressed my discomfort and adjusted what he was doing to cause me less pain while he prepped my jaw and neighboring molars for the new crown. Placing my new tooth, he was exacting, quick, and skilled. It feels like I have my old tooth back. read more

Ugh. I hate to leave a bad review but I just wonder how much this guy knows dentistry. I went in for regular appointments for years and each appointment he told me I was getting gum recession because I wasn't brushing or flossing enough. Since I'd sometimes skip a floss here or there I figured I needed to be more consistent. Then I'd come back and he said, "Well, floss twice a day." He got me to the point of brushing and flossing after every meal. I moved and my new dentist immediately said, "Woah! Ease up on the brushing." I wasn't experience gum loss due to not taking care of my teeth. I was experiencing it because I was over-brushing with too strong of a brush! Three years of relentless brushing did a number on my gums. What's worse is I have an implant and he didn't address the recession on the back of that tooth at all. My new dentist taught me proper brushing techniques to maintain my teeth and gums so that I'm not looking for a gum graft in a few years. After leaving Dr Hom my gums are in much better shape and I have a real plan in place to maintain my implant. I just think this guy is on autopilot and I definitely don't recommend him if you have an implant. read more

UPDATE: Several years later... I have moved TWO times since being a patient of Dr. Hom and I STILL come here and will continue to do so. I have been coming for routine cleaning twice a year and am still so happy with Dr. Hom and Karina. I recommend him to all my friends. Dr. Hom always gives me a direct answer to all my dental related questions and lets me know when I should worry and when I shouldn't - which I need because I err to the side of worry! He's just the best dentist and I'm so happy with my dental health over the last few years as a result. read more

Best Dentist in LA. No really, I've searched a lot and I'm convinced of this. At least on the east side (who knows what happens west). I've been really choosy about finding a new dentist since moving to LA, and I couldn't be happier with Dr. Hom and his whole office. They're warm, accommodating and are taking great precautions during covid. I felt safe, and more than that, my years of dental work anxiety may finally be behind me. Dr Hom has a steady and gentle hand and does great work. I know, I'm suspicious of 5 star yelp reviews, but this is the real deal. I will say it takes some time to get in since they're a smaller office and are so busy, especially right now. So patience is required. But the work is well worth the wait. read more

Dr. Hom is AWESOME. my favorite dentist. he is truly an aesthetic-minded dentist. I had some really jagged edges that needed to be smoothed out and was NOT really excited about the prospect of fillings or $$$ veneers. every other dentist i went to tried selling me on the veneers option to make a quick buck off poor unsuspecting, gullible me. Not Dr. Hom. he straight up gave me the truth and advised AGAINST the unnecessary options. he laid out much less labor intensive options and we proceeded only when i knew all the pros and cons and felt completely at ease. the work he did was minimally invasive but looks SO GOOD. my teeth look perfect and without all the bs that other dentists were trying to do. every step of the way, dr. hom would stop and ask me to look at what he just did with a mirror before moving on to the next step. honestly, it was so nice to be in control and moving with caution. great family office. 2 generations of excellent dentistry passed down from father to son. spic and span, efficient and cost effective. Dr. Hom is a great guy. He's a very good dentist. Never tried to push products or services you don't need (he told me to buy a night guard online instead of a fancy custom made.) I've been a patient of Dr. Hom's for almost 7 years now, and I have no complaints. My favorite trait of Dr. Hom is his honesty. He will not pressure you or recommend anything that is unnecessary. I've had bad experiences with dentists in the past who were not so honest, so it was a breath of fresh air to find Dr. Hom. His staff is very personable and friendly. I like that they send text, postcard, email reminders to make sure I come twice a year. This is more of a mom and pop type of office located on Hillhurst between Franklin and Melbourne. I am one of the many people who: A. have never gone to a dentist in LA B. have put off going to the dentist for multiple reasons i.e. no insurance. C. are reviewing for the FIRST TIME!!! Soooo... I decided to visit Dr. Hom because of all of the rave reviews Ive read on Yelp, and for the most part, I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Dr. Hom is thorough and direct. He asks you about your dental history and then recommends how to proceed without pressuring you in to anything before you know the costs. I had a full set of Xray pictures taken, a cleaning, and a visit/consultation. It cost me $252. (out of pocket/no insurance)...I guess this is reasonable. He also recommended I have a teeth detailing or deep cleaning as they call it. It will be costing me around $800...again, I don't know what to compare these rates to, but because of the fact that I have been neglecting my dental hygiene/care for years I was expecting a lot more damage and expenses...so I'm pleased that this is all i needed. ANYWAY. Dr. Hom is friendly, and personable. So is his staff. The office is intimate and along with the many others who have reviewed his office, I will be coming back to see him as my general dentist. read more

Like most people, I've never been all that fond of going to the dentist. Couple that with my genetically unlucky teeth its just one of those things that I need to do but have always dragged my heels in doing. That said, Dr. Hom and his staff are amazing and make the whole experience so much more bearable. For the first time in my life, I don't dread going to the dentist and I can honestly say that Dr. Hom is so good that I have had almost no pain during any office visit, even when I needed a root canal. This is quite impressive, given the horror stories I've heard from my friends about this procedure. Dr. Edward Hom always answers my many questions and takes the time to explain what he is doing and why. When he put on a crown and at an appointment a year later, looked at and "didn't like" as I wasn't able to floss as well as he wanted (not that I even noticed) he redid the crown at no cost to me. The receptionist, Karina is awesome and always so friendly and personable. I can't say enough about the quality and professionalism about this dentist's office. Going to an LA Dentist is like going to a car mechanic. You don't REALLY know what's going on so you put your trust in these professionals. Like the auto-mechanic industry - the dental industry can be very shady and I've learned that the hard way. After going to the very fancy Wilshire Dental near Beverly Hills then the insanely frightening Silverlake Dental - I finally found a good, trustworthy, knowledgeable dentist in Dr. Hom! The receptionist is super friendly and the 6 month postcard reminders are easy and helpful. Dr. Hom takes time with me and explains the xrays to me. Instead of declaring my mouth filled with cavities, like other dentists have, he waits and monitors the problem areas and talks to me about a plan. I've never had to fill a cavity while seeing Dr. Hom! In fact, I'd never HAD a cavity until I moved to LA when I was 32 and went to these shadier places where they've said I had several cavities that needed to be filled at $250 a filling. Looking back I now wonder if they really WERE cavities that needed fillings or if they were pre-cavities as Dr. Hom thought they were. My visits are super quick, painless and informative! Clean office with a great vibe. I bought Blue Cross Dental insurance and for about $30 a month I get two free cleanings - so it's affordable for me too. Used to not have insurance and paid per visit which is about the same cost so the insurance is just like a nice payment plan. Go to the dentist!! read more

So I don't freak out now when I get that postcard in the mail reminding me of my twice-a-year tooth cleaning! I appreciate how straightforward, honest, calm and non-condescending he is. Hard to find that among any doctors these days. I really hate how some doctors look down on you and rush their time with you. But I've always been very comfortable going to Dr. Hom's office. Even when I haven't been flossing like I should, he doesn't berate you about it or make you feel bad. He just tells you the facts and gives you gentle reminders. Ah how refreshing. Receptionist and hygienist are also super nice and professional. And it's nice to get a free toothbrush and even a mini floss afterwards! I keep the latter in my purse so that I can better heed my dentist's advice, hehe. Sadly my husband's insurance isn't covered at this office. But I'm hoping that with my new employer, I'll be covered again because Dr. Hom's one of the best around. Given the area, be forewarned that there is no parking for this office. Just came back from my first visit and I'm thrilled because I finally found a dentist that I like in this town! Thank you to all who wrote reviews. It's because of you that I even gave him a try! Everyone was super friendly from the receptionist to the dental hygienist to Dr Hom himself. I had also felt from a previous dentist that they were trying to sell me on teeth whitening or veneers but Dr Hom seemed genuinely concerned with my oral health and actually offered money saving options. What I liked the most was that he went over my x-rays with me to explain how gingivitis and cavities occur so that I could better understand how to care for my teeth. Thank you Dr. Hom! My wife and I have been going here for more than ten years. After any visit we have with Dr. Hom we always come home and have the same conversation about how amazing of a dentist he is. One example is my last visit; I came in for a root canal, and after a bit of drilling he stopped and said that it wasn't necessary. He was able to save me the pain of the root canal, and about $1000! I love this office! Dr. Hom is a great dentist and really down to earth. He and his staff are really nice, honest, and are trustworthy. They won't upsell you on anything you don't need and actually care about the health of your smile. This is not a super fancy office, but very clean, personable, and all around great and welcoming dentistry office. That's what I like about it. Definitely NOT a holistic dentist. I need to have my silver toxic mercury fillings removed (amalgam) and I was told they won't do it if there's 'nothing' wrong with the filling, just because you want to switch to composite. Can you believe that? That is MY choice, based on health reasons, and the dentist should comply. 'Regular' dentists still don't understand that mercury in silver fillings is TOXIC. Over time the mercury outgasses and is absorbed by your tissues, it gets absorbed into your bloodstream, thyroid etc. If you asked him, I'm sure he would deny it but i was tested and i came out HIGH on mercury emanating from my teeth. read more

The last, honest person in America. OK. Maybe there are a few other honest people out there. I totally trust him, and my picky husband, who only consulted with him once, was very impressed. Dr. Hom will never rip you off and takes great pride in taking care of people's teeth. He takes his profession very seriously and will never under or over treat someone. Dr. Hom is the best dentist I've ever had. He's straightforward and honest, and actually does a lot of the hygiene work himself. I've had cleanings, x-rays, root canals, crowns, everything from Dr. Hom, and he's great. I've been to famous Westside dentists before. They have sparkling new equipment that they have to pay for, so they convince you to have unnecessary tests and procedures to finance all that. They also spend 5 minutes with you, letting a low-paid hygienist do all the real work. Dr. Hom is not like that at all. He and his father have run this practice for decades and have a steady and loyal client base. They've invested in new dental chairs and everything is spotless, but they're not trying to sucker you into getting the latest CT scan or whatever. I want to thank everyone here on Yelp that turned me on to Dr. Ed Hom. Just had my first visit with him yesterday for a cleaning and X-ray. 1. Totally nice guy: Dr. Ed is intelligent, calm, cool, collected, and genuinely interested in your input. Like other reviewers noted, he's not in a hurry to rush from one phase of the checkup to the next; he'll take the time to listen to every concern you have, and answer every question thoroughly. 2. Does NOT try to sell you anything you don't absolutely need: This sort of thing was my biggest complaint about all my previous dentists in LA - - they always tried to tack on "$pecial" gum treatments, expensive prescription mouthwash, $600 night guards, and they recommended cosmetic whitening as something "I'll want to have done". DR. HOM IS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE - he seems refreshingly conservative when it comes to recommending anything beyond what's essential to good oral health and comfort. I even mentioned all of the aforementioned "extras" recommended by my former dentists to Dr. Hom, and he specifically told me why he thought each one was unnecessary in my case - cautioning me on the drawbacks of things like tooth whitening, and having my wisdom teeth pulled if (in his opinion) I could skirt by without it. . . though I did feel that he would support me on whatever I genuinely wanted to have done, provided I had carefully considered all possible trade-offs. 3. The visit was pleasant in every way: They have a super-nice receptionist who called me the day before to remind me of my appointment. Dr. Hom's hygienist/assistant was also nice and made zero mistakes. . . . something I've learned to never take for granted. Dr. Hom is the best dentist in the Universe. Dr. Hom is so kind, attentive, friendly, funny, awesome, caring, patient and has an amazing social grace. As a dentist, Dr. Hom is precise and calculative and has a gentle touch. He is comprehensive in his explanation of the health of your teeth, advises on preventative care and is completely nonjudgemental. He is fair and honest and that goes with his pricing and never tries to get you to do more than you can afford or what is needed to keep your teeth healthy. Dr. Hom was great-- unlike other doctors I've seen he was *not* in a rush to move on to the next thing, but instead focused on the particulars of my case. He was easy to talk to and very willing to answer questions. He did the work himself, and didn't pass me off to an assistant. His main receptionist is absolutely lovely, which is incredible since she's the one who deals with the insurance and handles the billing. To echo other reviews here, I also felt that he was being straightforward with me. I had to leave a nice review for Dr. Hom because man it's scary out there in the finding a dentist world, and when you find a good one you need to hang on to them for dear life! Like many people, I'm a real dentist skeptic - too many not-so-great experiences. And I'm here to say that all the 5-star ratings are no joke. Dr. Hom is like the Eagle Scout of dentists. Or maybe a Zen master. Gentle, quiet, patient, focused, thoughtful, unhurried, unassuming, explains everything, you know you have his full attention - when he's with you, you're the only patient he has. Again, gentle - in how he works and in his overall manner. I haven't had enough work done yet to be sure that his work is consistently good, but what he's done so far has been very good. He's made it clear that he's thinking about my whole mouth, not just a tooth at a time - now that's real holistic dentistry. And there's a reason why he's so booked up. I'm writing this in summer, which I didn't know was busy season for dentists, and I have appointments scheduled into November 2015. So if you want an appointment, keep that in mind. I really thought that Dr. Hon did a great job with my cleaning today. He was very personable and took time to go over my X-rays. Also, he is honest., which can be so hard to find in the dental world! Best dentist I have ever been to. Amazing knowledge, layout all your options, he does not push unnecessary work and he is cool. Plus the price is SUPER reasonable. I am wary of dentist trying to upset work, he is the complete opposite. He even cleaned my teeth. I have never had a dentist who cleaned my teeth vs a hygienist. I wish all service providers were like it. I had to wait a bit to get an appointment but now that I know I would have waited 2x as much to see him. I had a bad cavity in one of my molars and knew it was going to need a root canal, crown - the whole nine yards treatment. I was not happy with my previous dentist, so decided to use yelp to find a better one... Now I definitely know that I have found my personal, permanent general dentist. First of all I should tell you that I am a very picky person seeking perfection in everything. Always doing my homework, I am surely a pain in the a$$ for most of the doctors :) From the very first visit I started to enjoy Dr. Hom's truly human attitude and honest care for his patient. He was really hearing all of my concerns and answering my numerous questions, and WITH NO RUSH. It seemed to me like he had all day for me !!! He even had me back to the office the next day (free of charge) to fairly complete his conclusions and advices on my treatment plan (because on the first day we couldn't fit into the preset appointment time due to my extensive questions). Although he told me that the cavity is so deep that I am going to need a crown lengthening (jaw bone shaving), which sounded very scary, however he took time to explain me all the pros & cons, and I comfortably decided to trust his treatment plan. By the way, crown lengthening is not as bad as it sounds. But this is another review for a different dental specialist... Bottom line, here is what I enjoyed in Dr. Hom's office: * very friendly, relaxing, honest and no-rush attitude with a patient; * puts a lot of dedicated time time to work on your tooth. * Karina (front desk, insurance specialist) is great and very easy to work with. No tension at all, like you see in other offices. Did not have any billing issues. All insurance claims and amounts were as expected. * feel-like-home atmosphere (for a great dental experience you don't have to go to one of those fancy looking and hi-tech equiped offices). Lastly, here is an interesting fact. When leaving Dr. Hom's office after the last visit, I told him that I am very satisfied with his work. Then he asked me a good question: "how do you know I did a good job?"... Well, some things you can't control and have to be left on God. As to the other things ... for me in this age it is much important to get treated in a human, honest way, even with some minor quality flaws, rather than get a perfect treatment but get robbed financially and MORALLY. Further, if he thinks something is out of the range of his expertise, he'll happily refer out to a specialist instead of trying to take on the work himself like sometimes other dentists do.
