After being a cheapskate with regard to haircuts for our kids - previously just Supercuts-grade cuts, and then a few years of pandemic-induced DIY cuts at home - we decided that it was high time that we started investing just a little more in their appearance. Don't get me wrong, my wife did an admirable job during the lockdown, honing her skills and producing fine looking coifs. However, my son's thick hair always posed a bit of a challenge, and with some important upcoming events we felt that it was time to return to the professionals. We received a recommendation from a close friend for either Edward or Helen, so we called for an appointment. We were able to get a same-day booking. Edward was just finishing up with a client as we arrived. He asked my son about his preferences and took a close look at his head, noting some of the more challenging areas. After washing and conditioning his hair, he got down to business. Usually I don't pay much attention to the haircutting process, but on that day I observed more closely than usual. It was clear that Edward was thinking hard about what would work best for him and how to solve the problem of his cowlick and the spikiness of his hair in the back. He worked methodically to give it style and shape, and in the end gave him an excellent haircut. He did mention afterwards that his hair was fairly challenging. The price of the haircut before tip was a surprisingly reasonable $35 - pre-pandemic I think we were paying a little over $20 at Supercuts. Edward is a GENIUS stylist! Like many people during this pandemic, I've been coloring my own hair. I started out using cheap boxed hair color thinking I'd only be doing my own color for a short time. My hair became super damaged from harsh chemicals. I switched to a better quality color but it was too late. Once my hair started to dry out, I ended up damaging it more just to make it look less damaged. Color, high heat blow dry, high heat styling tools, repeat. Recently when I visited a state that had salons opened, I booked a haircut to have someone cut some of the damage off. I got THE WORST cut of my life. My sister said my hair looked like hair from a mug shot! I sent pictures to my longtime stylist in Europe. She agreed that it was BAD! She took the time to look up salons near me. She told me that I needed to wait until Edward M Salon was open because from what she read, she thought this was the best place to get it fixed. She was SO right! When I was able to get an appointment with Edward, he listened and we discussed the options. He truly knew what to do right away and I had an intense sense of trust from the moment I met him! He worked a true miracle on my hair. My husband loves it and I have received so many compliments. On top of the great style Edward gave me, we had really nice conversations! Edward is open and honest and genuine. We talked about life and how things changed during the pandemic. I felt like I was making a friend who is also an incredible stylist! This is my very first review on Yelp! Ever since I donated my hair to Locks of Love for the first time in undergrad, I've been growing out my hair to donate. This time around, I just happened to be visiting in norcal & wanted to get my hair cut and done with since it was just getting too long! I read other wonderful reviews about Edward here on Yelp so I made an appointment and decided to give him a try. I wasn't familiar with the area & I'm pretty directionally challenged, but I found the plaza okay & the shop was easy to identify because of the Yelp photo! =) My appointment was at 10am in the morning, so I was his very first customer. When I first walked in, I was greeted by Edward (well, more like he had to unlock the door to let me in, ha ha). His assistant then came over & took me to get shampoo/conditioning done - it was wonderful! Haven't sat in a comfortable chair in a LONG time - a lot of places (like Supercuts) have uncomfortable set-ups and you strain your necks trying to find the perfect spot for it...I almost fell asleep (and I just woke up that morning for the appointment)! After, Edward started working on my hair. He asked how I wanted my hair done - I told him I wanted to donate and then get a cut but have NO idea what I want (I usually don't since I'm not so into fashion/hair) so he took a look at my hair and said, "It's going to be short, are you sure you want to donate?" and I said "Yes, but I don't spend a lot of time on my hair, so can you give me something easy to work with?"... He went and got a book w/ different hair styles & pointed to a picture - he started telling me about his plans & how it'll look wonderful if I BLOW-DRY it -- at this point, I was like WOAH! I don't blow-dry my hair...he then reassured me that it'll look good regardless. (REALLY?!) He first took about 10 inches off for the donation and started working on my hair. He spent more than an HOUR on my hair before his assistant came over to blow-dry my hair...I was worried at this point because he was cutting my hair with a messy part, so I asked if I had to part my hair on a specific side, and he answered, "No, you can part anywhere you like and it'll look good"...by the time he was done, my hair looked GREAT! And yes, I could part it on either side and it still looks good & even if I don't blow-dry it, it looks good! (but I did end up getting a blow-dryer because it gets all crazy in the morning after I go to sleep w/ wet hair) If you're Asian & like me and never know how you like your hair (or doesn't know what looks good on you), Edward's the person to go to. I find that Caucasian stylists usually don't know what to do with Asian hairs (as evident by my previous haircuts) and I've always had better luck if I went to an Asian stylist - even if it was just a simple trim/layer. I've been getting LOTS of compliments from friends and this rarely happens! It cost me $45 for the cut and I really love my hair! SOOOOO much better than what you can get at places like Supercuts - don't think I can ever go back there again! And if I ever end up living near Edward's Salon in the future (I'm thinking of moving to norcal), I'm definitely going back there! read more

He's very talkative and friendly and he gave me a sharp looking haircut in no time at all. 30 minutes and $35 for a good haircut. Not much else I can say about this establishment. read more

I found this salon through YELP. I had my hair cut and highlighted by Edward. Haircut was good, highlights were not. I asked Edward to tone down the color of the highlights (they were too light,) and to add highlights that would blend in to make my hair look more natural. The old color was not toned down, and I could not see any new highlights. My roots were still at least an inch and a half black at the roots. After my hair was dried I pointed out to Edward that my hair was too light, he said he would write down the color and pick a darker color the next time I went to have my hair done. Edward´s prices were not worth the service. I will not go again. read more

He seems to be very honest, not too chatty and knows what he is doing with scissors! Prices are reasonable especially for this area. I don't know where to begin about how disappointed I am with this place. I had been looking forward to my haircut with edward since last week. I have been wanting to get my hair cut by him for a long time, even before he opened his own salon. The moment I found out I had gotten the day off from work, I made the appointment, which was almost a week in advance. I was super excited! I even told my friends! On the day of my appointment I arrived 7-10 minutes late and hurried in, apologetic. Edward told me it was fine, since he was waiting for his assistant to arrive anyway. Then he sat me down in his chair to start talking about my hair. He tsked at me twice: once for not bringing in a picture of the exact cut I wanted and again for telling him I don't typically use a flat iron to style my hair in the morning, just a round brush. After feeling like a scolded child, I asked him for suggestions and he didn't want to give me any, saying how there were a million things he could do. He again harped on the fact that I didn't bring in a picture. I thought giving suggestions was part of being a stylist, but I must have been wrong Then his assistant called him and said she didn't wake up on time and wouldn't be coming in. Edward then nonchalantly asked me if I could come in the next day. Are you serious?!! I couldn't believe he asked me that. He explained that he needed to start preparing for the next appointment. But by that time it was only 15 minutes into MY appointment. I was dumbfounded. People aren't available everyday of the week to sacrifice a couple of hours to come in and sit for a haircut. People have work! That's why people make appointments. That's why salons are crowded on the weekend. You can't just casually ask me to come in on another weekday like my schedule doesn't matter! I couldn't believe it. He was serious. When I asked if maybe I could come in later that day he said he wouldn't be available until 5 hours later. He was completely unapologetic, removed the smock from around my neck and sent me on my way without a haircut despite my obvious disappointment. Honestly, I have never in my life had worse customer service at a salon than I got at this place. And as for being asked to come back at a later time once I was already sitting down in the chair...I was fuming on my way to the car. What a complete waste of my time and morning. I was so ready to be singing Edward's praises to my friends. Now it looks like all they are going to get is an angry ear full. And instead they'll be hearing great things about the place I went instead: My experience with Leyli at Allan's Salon in Santa Clara. Now there's a place with excellent customer service! Humorously, I got into a discussion the last two times I was at Edward's about Yelp reviews. He said I gave him a bad review... Something about an $8 haircut. I said, "No way". I was still coming back!! However, he was right: I went back and re-read my reviews and I was not flattering in that part, but keeping it in context, I was being honest about *my* results. And the stars are still "A-OK" according to the display. I have to say, though, that, ironically discussing the review, I was reminded of why I gave that review when I got home and washed my hair: wayyyyy too short, too short in the back, all even all around. My instructions were "not too short - I like enough length so that I can move it around and style it", and I don't like it all even, but rather a purposely messed look. What I had for the big event I was going to for the weekend was a buzz cut on the sides and back, all even and super short, and bit longer on the top. (So I could style the top, but there wasn't enough on the sides to do anything.) With micromanagement during the cutting process, the cuts turned out pretty good, but enough time went by between cuts that I eventually forgot. So, Edward, you were right: it was my review you didn't like, but I didn't like my hair when I got home. read more

I haven't had much luck in the "finding a right stylist" department for quite some time now. It started 2 years ago when I first moved to this area and needed a hair cut desperately. I, not thinking clearly, pulled over to a strip mall hair salon spontaneously as I was driving by. Bad move. The stylist was an older russian lady and decided my hair was "too long" and promptly chopped off sections in my hair. I walked in with hair halfway down my back to walking out with something closer to neck length and choppy. :( Oh, and all this was a day before my week long vaca to socal and vegas. :( Needless to say when I reached LA I was desperately seeking a stylist to "fix" this mistake and ended up with a "bob" cut. A very costly experience. Ok.. fast forward to today - Since that miserable cut, I've seen 4-5 other stylists and it just never ends up right - and not to mention expensive. Finally I yelped a good salon and saw Edward's Salon and decided to make an appointment. I have to tell you, he is as good as they say he is. The appt didn't start off as well as I had hoped though - my appt was at 330 and I arrived about 15 min early - Edward didn't see me till 420. But here's why. One of his other stylists had client whose hair she apparently dyed and cut. Edward was running behind on his last appt and was about to see me when this other gals client started to complain about the dark dye remaining on her skin. She kept going up to the mirror and looking at her scalp. Well, if you're light skinned, and you're dying your hair black, its only obvious that your skin is going to have some remnants of the dye. Edward and his other stylist assured her that after another wash, the dye will be completely gone.. however she kept complaining. Then she was complaining about the color of her hair - saying its back to her natural color - well, that is what she picked out - so one would assume she would know that if you pick black, you're going to get black. Ugh.. this lady was a complainer like you wouldn't believe. Anyhow.. Edward tried to do as much as he can, but the lady wasn't happy. The husband, when told the cost of the service, announced that he wasn't going to pay for the coloring since its back to the natural color. At this point, Edward could have easily been adamant that he needed to be paid for the supplies/cost/whatever, but instead, he said ok, if you don't want to pay, then ok, and he remained calm. However, he did not reschedule another appointment and cut his losses right there. This made me have so much more respect for him as a person. He could have haggled with them, he had every right to, these people were the type that would go to an expensive restaurant, eat all the food and then say they didn't like it and expect it to be comp'd. He did the right thing - and not to mention, I walked out with a fabulous cut that EVERYONE has been complimenting on. :) I'm an Edward fan for life. :) read more

I have to say that Lan Nguyen (408-368-0962) truly knows her stuff when it comes to cutting hair! I so desperately needed a new hairstylist and a new hair-do. Lan saw how lifeless and heavy my hair and bangs was. I told her I wanted layers and she immediately took charge and knew what to do with my hair. It's hard to really see my hair cut because I have jet black hair. All I can say is I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my new style!!! Times are tough! I decided I needed to find a salon that gave me more bang for my buck. I came across this along through yelp and thought I'd give it a shot. 45 dollar hair cut compared to my usual 100+? I'm sold! I arrived at the salon and I decided since it was so affordable I'd go for a color as well. Faded orange colored hair ? Bleh! Time for an upgrade! I opted for a nice even brown all around. Outcome? Loved it! Edward listened to everything I had to say about how I wanted my cut and color. I explained to him everything I hated about my hair and he gave me suggestions on what I should do. He is very personable and I found that his staff reflected that same kind of attitude. Loi?, I believe that was his name was very friendly and made sure I was comfortable during the whole experience. I also loved the fact that he gave me tips on how to get that "just left the salon" look. I needed a cut, color and highlights and decided to read Yelp reviews to help me select a salon. When it comes to stylists, I am always skeptical as each reviewer may have a specific type of hair or style that may not be my idea of fantastic. Although my spin is --"Well, it will grow out", I certainly do not relish the idea of paying $$$ for bad color or cut. I read the reviews and as I was able to get a last minute appointment with Edward,off I went. All I can say is "WOW" I was very pleased and my coworkers all wanted to know where I had my hair done. Edward gave me an awesome A-line bob and the color/highlights were awesome.$175 and looking good! I routinely went to James Craig Salon in Saratoga or Legar in Palo Alto. I decided to come here after my friend wouldn't stop raving about how freakin amazing Edward was. I had to admit.. her hair came out really nice. She had dark hair and got blonde highlights.. but here's the big surprise... her hair was NOT ORANGE! The colors came out exactly as she wanted. Woow.. Anyways, I was sold. I decided to make an appointment with Edward to get my hair cut since my hair was long overdue for one. When I got there, I thought the place was clean and everyone was super friendly. I was so glad I booked this appointment with Edward. I find it really hard to find someone who can cut my bangs the way I like.. but Edward was the best! He listened to me and made sure he knew what I wanted before he started.. and didn't cut my hair too short like most salons tend to do. Wow....haven't been yelping for awhile, but have been going to see Edward for years. Reading some peeps reviews kinda makes me laugh. Seems like all the people that expected something was unhappy about the price or service. I think Edward's a place where you go in and just say something like "go ahead, surprise me" i can't remember how many stylist have told me to color my hair, and I've replied "too much time" and thinking inside "AND too much money" I can remember the first time he asked me if i wanted to try something new and I agree cause I was going out of the country for a month and thought what the hell why not. He put 2 colors,on the sides and on the top. Really I didn't see much of a difference. But I told him I would be going to clubs, and that's why he suggested those cause it really dazzles under that kinda lighting. That was also the first time in my life I got compliments and a few people even asked me where I got my hair done. And that the 2 colors, not too noticeable under the sun, but under night lights, everybody noticed it and told me they really liked that!! (they weren't pleased to hear that it was back in the US though) Now I go to Edward's, I basically let him know what I'm doing this coming month or so, and he just takes over. Sometimes he colors me, sometimes he doesn't. I just know when the bill comes, I have one thing in mind "JUST PAY" About 3 months ago I got there early and the guy in front of me got there late. And you know what happens then.....I wait. The guy said he has gotten $10 hair cuts all his life and decided (after a wife a 2 kids) to try something different, and told his secretary to find a stylist and make a reservation. I think if you're in the mood for that, then you should try Edward out. If you want 2 inches here and 4 there, then Supercuts will do just fine. (no shame, I went to Supercuts for a long long time paying $8) But since I've tried Edward, I often leave with a tip more than that now. I also believe now that one should always go to a hair stylist rather than a barber shop (no offense to B.shops). If you agree, then I would recommend giving Edward a try. I just relocated from NYC 3 months ago and was in desperate need of a haircut. A perm job 2 years ago has left my ends perpetually dry and split-prone and the blistering polar vortex in NY didn't help! On top of that, I wanted to try something different with my hair. I had always struggled to find a reliable and fair-priced salon back in NY. The places I went to were inconsistent with their cuts so when I came across Edward's, I was really excited! Edward and his assistant, Ingrid are both very knowledgable and friendly. They tell you the truth about your hair and best practices for caring for it and seemed to know exactly what I was looking for in terms of color. I have to say this is the first time anyone has given me a cut that I really liked! It was simple long layers and a bangs trim that so many had messed up before. I was so thrilled with the results and customer service (and price!) that I made the appointment to come back a few days later to dye my hair, which hasn't been died in years and was never professionally done. The color is beautiful, but not too obvious (what I had asked for). Long story short, I am so glad I found Edward's Salon and will be recommending him to everyone I know!! read more

I normally only write a review if something is GREAT or horrible. I know Edward CAN do a great job because my good friend has been going to him religiously for her hair. Sadly for me...that greatness did not extend to my haircut. I have been growing my hair out for years and it has taken me forever to get my layers just about even with my length (no easy feat). I noticed the bottom felt a little heavy so I asked Edward to lighten the load on the bottom but NOT to give me short layers because I like to curl my hair and it took me forever to grow them out. I even showed him pictures of what I wanted and DID NOT want and he responded with confidence that he could do it. As he was cutting my hair I was nervous because there was a lot of hair on the floor (which he even commented about). I don't like to micromanage and I trusted him given his reviews and my friend's approval. When he showed me my hair at the end, he fanned it across my back so it looked okay. My hair is so dark that I couldn't really see the layers and now that I think about it, some of the hair must have been on the frontside of my shoulders. When I got home I examined my hair more in the mirror and my heart dropped. He had chopped off chunks on either side of my hair creating high LAYERS that don't flow with the longer ones. When I tried to wear my hair curly the next day it looked like a giant mushroom. To say the least...I am devastated. The only solution will probably be to cut my hair short which I have painstakingly been growing out for my 30th birthday in September.There's no way it will be back to normal by then as it is only a few months away. I am completely heartbroken. I gave Edward one star because he at least did a good job on my bangs; of course, it does not make up for my heartbreak over my hair. I moved into the area and needed a new hairstylist. I came across this place bc it was close to work and had great reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. The assistant was great and extremely nice. She got me prepped with a shampoo and ready for the cut. When it came to actually getting my hair cut, I was a little under impressed. My previous haircuts with other stylists, I was always consulted at the beginning of the appt when my hair was dry, not soggy wet. After the cut, he made a comment how thick my hair was but if he would have been there at the beginning of the appt, maybe he would have notice earlier. read more

I've been to many other places in my 11 years in the Bay Area, and the difference is night and day. Even if I let it go for too long, as I often do, it looks better for longer than anywhere else I've been. Edward has *great* attention to detail, and is extremely consistent! Even if I wanted to, my wife wouldn't let me go anywhere else. - - - - - - - - An update is overdue... I'm still going to Edward nearly seven years later (over a decade now)! I moved a couple times and have occasionally tried out different local stylists (Sorry Edward! They were just down the street.) but I haven't found anyone who can match Edward's amazing talent for cutting hair with a very high attention to detail and style. I don't have the easiest hair to cut. It's super-fine, and let's admit it, now that I'm a 40 year old dad, it's thinning on top and the sides come in all bushy. It's a challenge to make it look nice - and the cut I got there last week was as good as or better than any cut I've had before. Edward took the extra time to make the hair look great! Pricing is certainly higher than your local Supercuts and in my opinion, for a professional looking, stylish haircut, it's worth it! read more

My first experience with Edward was good. I went for haircut and color. I arrived at 3:40 p.m. and he first cut to the agreed length (shoulder). Then he put in the (Wella) dye, and I waited some 50 minutes. His assistant washed my hair, then blew it dry, then straightened it with the iron, and told me to wait. Edward was cutting some other person's hair. Then he came and cut the layers. The reason for the 4 (instead of 5) stars is twofold: 1) It took more than it usually takes (I was out at 6 p.m.) 2) After he finished cutting my hair, I mentioned that I wanted a bit more straight on the area behind the ears, "what do you think?" and he looked, touched it, but didn't really blow anymore air. I believe it is because he had already put the spray, but he didn't say. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with his work. read more

For 8 years, I went to the same place to get my $8 haircut. It worked for a while; Got a haircut every 3 weeks and it was cheap! I got sick of the inconsistency. Some days it would be perfect, others my head would look like a mushroom and others I looked like I was being deployed. Yessica has been cutting my hair for the past 3 years and the thing I love most is that it's CONSISTENTLY excellent. She gives suggestions and listens to mine and she's extremely personable. She also cuts my hair in a way that I don't have to get it cut every 3 weeks! For me, it was worth paying extra for everything I get in return. read more

He stayed late to do my color and cut which I totally appreciated. I am VERY happy with the service and the end result of my hair color and cut. Edward was very through and made sure I got exactly what I wanted. He really took his time to make sure everything was perfect, yet he was also very efficient with his time. Prior to getting into the new year 2010, I started looking around for a new hair salon to get my hair cut at and decided to look around using Yelp of course. I really like this area so I started looking at various salons as well as reviews others have left behind. Then, I had found Hair Glamour and read really GOOD reviews for Edward and that's how I found Edward's Salon. Seeing how popular Edward was I decided to give him a call and just as I expected he was booked today as well as for Saturday, but at the last minute he squeezed me in for a late afternoon appt. Originally, I brought a hair style magazine with me in hopes of getting the same if not a similar cut, but like my husband told me a few nights ago my hair style is a lot different from the girl in the magazine and that's what I was told by Edward as well. Edward showed me some of his books that could be a possibility cut for me and I like simple looks so that's what I ended up going with. Thank You Edward once again for squeezing me in earlier today as well as giving me a look I really love!! It's hard to tell sometimes how your final look .. looks like at the end in terms of wet hair versus dry hair so next time, I'll come back when my hair get long again and request to get my hair cut a little shorter. In the mean time, I'll enjoy my awesome cut and Thank You again!! Amazing. Never have I had someone take such care to make sure my haircut was exactly how it should look. Edward is awesome with the scissors, and he took his time with each section to ensure everything fell perfectly into place. Very attentive, great conversation, clean salon, courteous customer service. Also located in a shopping center with ample parking, always a plus. Trust me you wont be disappointed. I highly recommend the owner of the salon, Edward. He has mad scissor skills. He listened and patiently explained that my hair texture is different than the picture I brought in. Yet Edward was able to adjust and edit my hairstyle till I felt comfortable with it. I learned that in choosing a hairstyle, not only does one have to select a style based on face shape, but also based on hair texture as well. FINALLY we find an affordable, excellent hair stylist for my husband. He has very fine, blonde hair (but lots of it), so it is easy for sub-par stylists to give him an awful hair cut. Edward saw a picture of what my husband's hair looked like a few months back and nailed it. Plus the cut was only $30...! Definitely found our go-to stylist! I finally found someone that was able to cut my hair in layers!- Edward exceeded my expectations.

After reading all the reviews, decided to give it a try. The service was great, even after I had to move my appointments 3 times. I didn't really know what I wanted but with the few specifics, Edward was able to give me a haircut that is what I want. I was concern if it would look the same after I wash my hair, but with little effort it still looks good. My son's hair cut was also very good. We've been trying so many places in the area, I'm glad I found a place that is close to home that both myself and my son likes. read more

First of all, I want to thank all of the excellent reviewers who posted about Edward and his new salon - Edward's Salon. Had these posting not taken place, I would not have found this gem of a hair salon. For the first time in my life, I decided to select a new hair salon based on reviews from Yelp. After reading about all the salons near my work (convenience is very important to me), I noticed that some guy named Edward kept getting mentioned as being awesome. Reading further, I learned that he had recently opened his own place. I decided to take a risk and put my hair in his hands. Boy am I glad I did. Not only did he live up to all of the things I had read about him but he did something magical . . . . . he gave me such a good haircut that my husband actually commented on it! Now this is a first. He not only told me it was the best hair cut I've ever had (this from a man that typically doesn't even realize I've cut my hair) but kept bringing my hair up throughout the night. I came home for winter break from school and was in serious need of a haircut. I am growing out a pixie cut, and for those of you who have gone through the pain, let me tell you, these months are the WORST. It's at the point where the back of my hair is nearly as long as the front of my hair (hallelujah!) and as of 5 days ago I literally had a mullet. I have a hairdresser back in Ithaca who made my pixie cut and I trust with my life to do my hair... in the Bay Area, not so much. So, I made "consultation" appointments with a few different salons in hopes that with a little bit of money I could de-mullet myself. Edward's Salon was definitely on the lower end (price-wise) of where I was looking. I walked in and wasn't expecting much, considering this is a hair salon in a strip mall (near Marshall's). I was so wrong. I spent 5 minutes talking with Edward and he clearly knew what he was doing. I have hair that is curly/wavy when more than 2 inches long and he knew exactly how to cut it so it looks nice, not messy (it's easy for wavy hair to be curly when it's at ear-length). I was super impressed and walked out of his salon de-mullet-ed and happy! Seriously, a great place with a great price. Thanks, Edward! :) read more
