After an exhausting drive from Michigan we arrived at Edwards Waterhouse. We received a lovely greeting from our hosts and brought into a beautiful reading area and sitting room decorated with amazing Christmas ornaments, lights and a beautiful Christmas tree. All of the fireplaces on the main floor were burning brightly. After being helped up to our room with our luggage, Stephen and Martin set up a tea service for us in the dining room after I requested some hot water for tea. In the morning, my request for gluten free breakfast was met with an excellent just baked coffee cake along with oatmeal and fruit. We enjoyed our visit so much that on our return from Vermont, we again spent the night and enjoyed our stay just as much. Martin and Steven are excellent hosts. They work hard to make your stay perfect. The room we rented was very comfortable and private. We stayed in Dec 2023 and Jan 2024. A wonderful experience!

The start of a magnificent breakfast!!

I should start out by saying that this is the hotel where I took my sweetie for the first few days…read moreof our honeymoon, so my impression may well be coloured by extremely pleasant associations. Being right on Lake Erie, the hotel was once decorated with a heavy nautical theme, much of which is still visible in the sign for the since-renamed Windjammer's Restaurant outside the main entrance, multiple model ships on shelves in the lobby, and a mockup mast, ratlines, and crow's nest in what used to be Windjammer's. All of those things are going to please an old salt like me. Better yet, our room had a good view of the marina (currently empty except for birds) and the lake beyond the breakwater. The current dining options consist of a bar and a dining room, both operating under the name of Steelbound, marketed as a brewery, distillery, and restaurant. The desk clerk told me that the the chef is really good, and knows his Indian food. (The menu leans heavily to Indian dishes.) I love a good curry, but in the end, I opted for the Beef on Weck, which is apparently a local favourite in the Buffalo area, and I have lived here much too long without giving it a try. Alas, I can't comment on whether the Beef on Weck was prepared properly, because I have nothing to compare it to. It was tasty enough, although the beef was a tad on the rare side for my preference. (Note to those who, like me, are prone to gout: many of the dishes on the "Western Food" side of the menu involved having beer added to the dish in one way or another. Presumably that was an effort to promote Steelbound's own beer, but since beer is a particularly potent trigger for gout, and I didn't really relish the thought of spending part of my vacation screaming in pain, that effectively made the menu considerably shorter for me than it would be for most people.) Breakfast is offered in the dining room until 9:00 am. There was cold cereal, coffee and tea, several fruit juices, hard boiled eggs, two kinds of muffins, an assortment of danish pastries, bagels, and several kinds of bread to toast, but of course the fun part of breakfast is the waffle maker. There's also a chafing dish offering up egg, meat, and possibly potato dishes (those offerings changed each day). Every interaction we had with any of the hotel staff was pleasant. They were all helpful and friendly, and gave us the impression that they were genuinely glad that we were there. (Although possibly, that may have been because we were there in the off-season.) On the con side, the hotel definitely needs some TLC. There were signs of wear noticeable in a number of places, including in our room. (There was a tiny little tear in the screen of our TV. I've never seen anything like that before. The desk clerk told us that they're in the process of replacing all the TVs. It can't come too soon for that one: it's a Sanyo [a brand that I have learned to avoid], and worked grudgingly if you tried to use any of the apps. Possibly some previous guest vented their rage on the TV if it went on the blink at a particularly critical moment in whatever they were watching.) Also, for some reason, in the intervening time since our honeymoon, the indoor pool was shut down, boarded over, and turned into event space, and a new pool was installed outside. We, of course, did not try the new pool since the temperature was hovering around freezing. But, in my opinion, the basic structure of the hotel is still sound, and with some judicious fixes here and there, I think it could be the nicest hotel in the area.

That being said my issue is that ownership has let the place get extremely run down. Both last year and this year we had to switch rooms because of broken tvs, refrigerator, chair, and I couldn't get out of bed because the mattress sloped towards the middle. We were vacationing with 2 small children. The area has nothing to offer people except the pier. I was visiting family and friends

We stayed in the Foote suite, which was decorated in very soft yellow curtains and comforter. It also included two small chandeliers with adjustable lighting. The bathroom looked completely renovated with comfortable tiling and a nice big shower. We also purchased the lunch package which included two sandwiches, a choice of side, water bottles and cookie! It also included everything you need for the beach; towels, chairs, umbrella, blankets and books! We loved our lunch and looking for sea glass. We arrived right at 3 for our check in and received a warm welcome from Lesley complete with a review of the property and tour of the space. Very helpful to know where everything is right away! Plus - a welcome cocktail and sweet bread was waiting for us! Delicious! The room: we stayed in La Due, which had an amazingly comfortable king bed, ceiling fan, and tub/shower combo. No detail goes unnoticed in the room, the towels are soft and match the floor rugs beautifully. Robes are available for guests and plenty of outlet space for charging is around the room. A note to visitors: the shared refrigerator for guests is only a mini-fridge, so there isn't much storage space. We'd suggest planning ahead and bringing a cooler for any larger items you wanted to store - or calling ahead to see about options. When we wanted to chill champagne, Lesley was wonderful to assist us with an ice bucket and two glasses! I highly recommend a trip here - friendly, relaxing, and so comfortable!

It has its own private entrance and porch, and it's located right next to the Amphitheater. One of our favorite parts of the week is sitting on the porch in the evening and listening to the concerts without ever leaving the room. We still love the Athenaeum for its history, charm, and unbeatable location. Being able to purchase our Chautauqua gate passes through the hotel is another nice perk. They're printed and waiting for us when we check in, making arrival quick and easy. So why did I lower my rating from five stars to four? Housekeeping has changed noticeably since our first visit. During our week-long stay, the room was never actually cleaned. Towels were replaced and the trash was emptied, but the floors weren't cleaned, the bed linens weren't changed, and the room was never refreshed beyond the basics. We also ran into a maintenance issue. Although the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers in the shower were full, none of them worked. We ended up buying shampoo and conditioner from the Plaza store and relying on the bar soap provided by the hotel. Neither issue ruined our stay, and we'll absolutely be back. But for a hotel of this caliber, I expect housekeeping and basic room maintenance to be better than what we experienced this year.

I stayed at the Athenaeum July 19-25. Before arriving I called to inquire whether there would be a…read morehairdryer and iron in the room and was assured that there would be. It did not occur to me to ask whether there would be a mirror in the room, as I've never been in a hotel that didn't have one. When I found that, aside from the small bathroom mirror located far above my height, there was no full-length mirror in the room, I asked about this at the front desk. I was told that they would see if they had a mirror that could be installed. When nothing happened, I inquired again and was told that the hotel had no other mirrors. Apparently, some rooms have mirrors and some don't and this seems to be fully acceptable to the management of the Athenaeum. I got no apology and was, in fact, made to feel like my request was unreasonable. If I were managing the hotel, I would think it worthwhile to send a staffer to the nearest hardware or dollar store to purchase a full length mirror and install it in the $400 deluxe double room. Total cost: less than $20 and a half hour time. Furthermore, the prefab plastic shower stall lacked a grab bar or even a shower mat. Given the average age and mobility of guests at the hotel, this seems like an accident (and liability suit) waiting to happen. I tried sending this as feedback directly to the hotel, but could not get to a link or contact info that would have allowed me to do so.

I may be young but I'm a graduate student at SUNY Fredonia and would never dream of smoking in general, and definitely never inside! The room was very expensive for what you get. $400+ for 2 nights. Because of this extreme price I tried to be proactive and meal prep for myself to save on money. Just to get to my room and realize that there was no microwave like the website advertised. There's one in the lobby but with weird buttons that seem to be designed to only heat up the breakfast items they serve. And with no elevator in this building I was not carrying my piping hot food back up the stairs every meal. The beds are comfy and they give plenty of pillows but there's so many noises in the room I could barely sleep. The air conditioner sounds like it's going to break down any minute and the walls are paper thin so I heard my neighbors every move all night. Next time I'll pay the extra $80 to stay across the street at the Best Western. Room is very outdated as well with stained and gross carpet and water stains in the bathroom.

The hotels are disgusting, but there is nothing else in the area, so they price gauge since you have no other options. It seems as if a glitch on the website caused issues and I was unaware of the reservations. Regardless, it was a mistake. When I reached out to the company, these rooms were somehow checked in with no guests and charged for full stays. You would think they would contact me or let me know there was a no show instead of charging for the full amount without any credit card authorization form. At first, they did not want to refund any of the money. Then they decided to charge me a no show fee for each room (4 rooms), still resulting in a charge of almost $500. You would think since we have been loyal regular customers with them, they would be a little more understanding and work with us. I guess it doesn't matter how much money you spend, they will still try to rip you off. Buyer beware...something is not right here.
