Stopped by for the first time and had the most fantastic lunch and Greek food I've had in a long time! We wanted an avogolemono soup for this cold weather we've been having (boo), but they only make it seasonally so not until Oct. So we quickly adapted our order to get a chicken souvlaki on pita, and a feta cheese pie. We added on a slice of orange cake which doesn't appear on their menu but calls you from a corner of the restaurant and you just have to answer that call! It took about 15 mins for the food to be ready but it was the afternoon rush. Overall, everything was flavorful and served hot. I've never had a chicken souvlaki that's so juicy and tasty, melt in your mouth. The toppings - fries, crunchy red onion, tomato, and tzatziki all added to the taste. That tzatziki was amazing. The feta cheese pie had a flaky crunchy covering and just the right amount of feta so that it wasn't overly salty. Thumbs up for the last min order of the cake. Sweet, moist, and fresh. Pita: I didn't know it could be this good. It's commonly dry with a sandy residue on the hands. The way it's prepared here makes all the difference. Chicken: moist, flavorful, with the slightest char. Tzatziki: garlicky and savory Spinach pie: flavor was excellent, although oily through the wrapper. That's the nature of fillo Be patient. A small Greek restaurant with just a couple of tables for seating. I came here to grab a quick dinner and decided on getting the pork souvlaki and I requested with no onions and they said that's fine. They said it would take about 10-15 minutes since they cook the meat on the grill after you order. It took about 10 minutes for the meat to cook and to assemble my pita and I was out shortly after. Overall, the souvlaki was great, except I was disappointed that they added in so many onions and didn't honor my request. The pork was cooked well, not too dry and the tomatoes, french fries, and sauce went together well. The pita was soft and was a great wrap that was able to hold everything together. I would like to go back and try some of their other wraps and baklava, so hopefully next time they'll remember to forgo the onions. read more

Effie's hits the spot for a tasty Greek lunch- the menu is focused (just the basics, please), the food is cooked fresh (so prepare to wait a bit after order- no preemptive online ordering here, seems like?), and the flavors and quality is solid and just as expected. Special shoutout to the delicious warm fluffy pita and feta-filled salad dressing, but everything else was good as well: the pork gyro that's actually cooked in the 'real' way (no pre-sliced/pre-formed meat here), the souvlaki skewers which were well-marinaded and juicy, the ginormous pieces of baklava/kataifi. Seems like a family-run spot too, folks who are friendly with the regulars and take pride in their food. I live close to this place & went YEARS ago when they first opened and never again. Recently I decided to give them a try because the Square doesn't have many options anymore but it made me remember why I never went back. Service is not friendly. Don't expect to be greeted or even smiled at when you walk in if you're not a regular there. While I waited for my food I observed mold on many of the baklavas there..at first I thought it was pistachio but upon looking closer saw the fuzz. When it was time to pay, the owner charged me more than what the register said because I paid with a credit card. It's illegal in MA. When I politely said something I got a snarky response. The chicken gyro was edible but very dry but the pork gyro was gross. Not flavored well and had so much fat. Obviously wouldn't go there again. $26 for two small gyros that aren't good is asinine. read more

I stopped in for first time as reviews said delicious gyro. I will not stop in again. Ordered pork gyro and was waiting her to shave some fresh pork off the rotisserie. Instead she had a pan of shavings I guess on stovetop. The gyro meat was as pretty much inedible... dry scraps probably from the last of a previous roast as there was a new one cooking. Serving a customer that and especially a new customer was enough for me.... Pita nothing to write home about. Only a few onion shavings, 2 tomato pieces and few soggy French fries.... I have Eaten gyros at many local Greek restaurants... Kourzinas inDedham , Fiesty Greek in Norwood and others... this was the worst... shouldn't serve that to anyone... most ended in their garbage pail by front door with sign saying they are closing July 30th and returning September 6th... ? Stay closed to December if you want... I won't darken your doormat again serving me trash scraps that should have been put in dumpster out back for animals to find and eat. read more

This was my first time having them. I called to place and order over the phone (they don't have an online option) and my food was ready in about 15-20 minutes. I got the Greek salad and chicken gyro dinner. Everything was fresh and tasted good. Good portion sizes. The Greek salad is $8.50 and it was on the smaller side. Having lived in Greece for a while, I've been searching endlessly for authentic, Greek food since coming to Boston. After coming to Effie's I can finally say that I've found what I was looking for, for so many months! For the lower price of $7.50 (usually get gyros/souvlaki pitas for $9-$10 at other places) I got fresh chicken souvlaki seasoned with the right amount of oregano and lemon juice, wrapped in a crisp pita bread with homemade tzatziki sauce, onion, tomato, greens, AND they put the French fries IN the pita. My Greek taste buds were 100% satisfied- tasted just like what you would get in Greece! The prices were reasonably cheap (Effie's was featured in a Boston's Top 20 Cheap Eats article). Space to eat inside is limited, but there's a cute little green area in Roslindale square right by Effie's where you can indulge in your awesome Greek food! I can't say much for the Greek cheese and spinach pies, as they were sold out when I came in around 6, so I'll take that as a good sign and have to come in earlier for lunch! I will definitely be back at Effie's- the atmosphere has a homey, Greek feel to it and the people working there are so friendly and nice! Unbelievable!! We popped in and ordered a chicken gyro and gyro plate with fries. Came back in 7 minutes and it was pipping hot ready to go. I threw in an extra side order of pita and tzaziki. For $1 each you can't go wrong. Effie insisted on warming the pita up.... I couldn't say no. Just as I checked out I spotted baklava and thought why not further support a small business through eating all they had to offer. I absolutely adore this place. The food is amazing and serving sizes are always generous. Best gyro this American has ever had. Filled with meat, delicious toppings, and french fries INSIDE the wrap. My vegetarian fiance adores the Horiatiki salad. It's a large serving with huge chunks of feta, fresh cucumber, tomatoes, and no space wasted on lettuce. The owner and employees are very kind and attentive. If you choose to eat in at one of their two small tables, they'll serve the food directly to you which is just a nice touch in a small takeout place. Hands down, the best gyro I've ever had. I walked into the place after seeing its high reviews on yelp, but immediately began to second guess myself. It was about 11:40am and no one was in there. I saw the pork shawarma rotating on the side, and decided to get whatever had that on it. I got the gyro to go and walked off. I sat down in another restaurant down the road with my friend and open the styrofoam container and tinfoil wrap to reveal the gyro. The pita was unable to fully wrap around due to the massive amount of pork. After a few glorious bites of juicy, perfectly rotisseried pork I reached the topping (more like bottomings). The fries, onions, tomatoes, and glory sauce perfectly complimented the meat. I was overwhelmed by the flavor. Even the pita carried the perfectly soft texture that I experienced living in the Middle East. Overall, it was amazing.
