Busy at dinner! This is a very nice restaurant inside of Hotel Weyanoke. It's very pleasant and convenient. Our window seats are right across the way from Longwood. We stopped in for a few cold beverages and something to snack on after walking and walking all over the hotel. I just happened to talk to the concierge and she pointed out all the restaurants at the hotel. We shared some yummy truffle fries. I wanted some coffee with Irish cream but no such luck. Only for brunch. So moscato it is! Dessert was a scrumptious carrot cake, very rich and filling. Be back soon! read more

In-house restaurant was dead on a Sunday evening, and perfect for my mood. The gooey wings were good sized buffalo style drumettes. Not sure how gooey or sticky they were, but tasted nice and the buttermilk dressing cut the heat. It was a nice change from Ranch. The pimento cheese is rather tasteless, but created a nice creamy cheese burger. Stand alone, the pimento cheese would stand up to most store bought varieties. The beef was perfectly cooked, well seasoned, and had great texture. This wasn't a frozen patty. Same spot serves breakfast and I was up early. I would recommend the baked French toast with blueberries and maple syrup if you're in the mood for something sweet. The maple syrup is the real deal, from the tree, not Mrs Butterworth. Again, seemed house made as the layers of French toast were distinguishable. The sausage was great too and almost had a scrapple taste to it. The playing was funny. Why two plates? The sausage looks so lonely and small. Sadly, the coffee is poor quality, but if you can wait, there is a Starbucks only a short walk away on Longwood's campus. Overall, pretty good spot. read more

Our server was quick with refills of our drinks and answered our questions about the menu. She recommended the Free Bird and I'm glad I got it. You don't get more Southern than pimento cheese. After riding on the High Bridge trail, Effingham's hits the spot for cold beer and great bar food. They feature Ballad Beers from Danville along with a couple of other choices. Very nice selection. As far as the food goes, we've had pizzas, burgers, pesto wings and the shrimp appetizer. All unique and very well prepared. The atmosphere is upscale and service always friendly. We love to stop here when in Farmville. read more

I've been here three times and have been pleased. The pizza is delicious and could easily serve two people. I love the green salad- so much flavor. We arrived and wanted something quick, so we went to Effingham's. What a pleasant surprise, our group enjoyed the pizza's, roasted corn and 4 cheese and their gooey wings. Wow the wings were the best I every had! I am 52 and that is saying a lot. I was so taken back bye these wings that I had to ask the Ex chef. He told me how they are made and now I understood why the complexity of flavors and textures were amazing. If you have a chance, take in this dining experience you won't be disappointed. Great place to try if you're in town. The pepperoni pizza with hot honey is to die for - I would drive 3 hrs to FarmVille just to get a taste. 8/10 on the truffle fries and Brussels sprout apps as well! Would not recommend asking for a Bloody Mary, I asked for brunch one time and it was mainly cocktail sauce in a glass. Downside is the wait time, typically slow service, but not too awful. read more

We took a day-cation to Farmville to bike the High Bridge trail, shop and, generally, self-isolate somewhere else! After our ride, we returned our bikes to our vehicle parked in the municipal lot next to Green Fronts carpet building and we consulted Yelp for lunch. Effingham's sounded like what we wanted: a shared salad and pizza. We walked less than a mile to the Longwood campus and found Effingham's in the Weyanoke Hotel across from campus. We also found the best meal we've eaten outside of our home since the pandemic began! When the chef came to our table to say hello, after we ate, we discovered that he was new and had just reopened Effingham's. How great for us all. We started with the buffalo cauliflower, served warm with a side of blue cheese dressing and curled celery strips. "Buffalo" flavor and color perfectly stained each floret of cauliflower which had been blanched to just the right state of crunch. The chef explained his procedure, and buttermilk was the secret! Barely restraining ourselves from licking the appetizer serving bowl, we moved on to our main dishes, which we shared: Caesar salad and the caramelized onion and fig flatbread pizza. Chopped romaine shared the show with thinly grated strands of purple cabbage and just the right amount of creamy -- but not too heavy -- parmesan Caesar dressing. Another bowl-licking temptation! The flatbread was rolled thin but still soft and crisp enough to hold the right amount of bite-sized sweet figs to complement the savory "jam" of onion, painstakingly caramelized. We aren't vegetarian but happened to picked a meal without meat. The menu contained a variety of foods. You might have thought we had biked 31 miles instead of 13 by the way we left not a crumb in that pan either. Wow! Possibly the best thinner crust pizza I have ever tasted (this is nothing like Chicago deep dish, which I love but that is a completely different food!). This pizza is made in a coal burning oven- the flavor and texture of the crust is spot on. Order a side of garlic aioli to dip it in! We tried the carbonara and the summer corn- both delicious but my fav was the corn. On both, the light white sauce had a lemon note which made it especially delicious. Just went for the first time last Wednesday for 75 cent wings special and they also have either Trivia or Bingo that night as well. Had a group of 6 we ordered appetizers, wings, salad, and pizza everything was delicious. Service were very polite and friendly but a little slow when it came to bringing drinks to the table, but not enough so to not want to go again. Is a definite place we will return to. Recommendations: Crispy Pesto Wings, Rosemary Fries, Green Power Salad, and any of the Pizzas. All were delicious. read more

Dinner few nights ago after checking into hotel with wife and daughter. We shared Brussel Sprouts app which was excellent, pizza, chicken salad, and burger. Pizza could have gone a few minutes longer but otherwise everything was prepaid very well. Definitely try the Brussels. read more

We arrived from out of town at the restaurant after driving 4 hours from DC and were looking for a table for three. The manager behind the register, Lashanna, screamed twice from across the room to the hostess that they had no room for a table of three. One other person in my party and I decided just to grab a drink at the bar and wait for a table to open. After being ignored for several minutes, we finally flag down a bartender and ordered our drinks. The hostess came to get us and told us a table was not ready but the bar top was available and was full service menu. So we sat down at the bar. Upon being ignored for another 10 minutes or so, we asked one of the bartenders, Ian, for a glass of water for my mother. He runs his hand through his hair, throws up his arms and says very rudely, "it's going to be a minute". He then proceeded to flip furiously through his drink book trying to make drinks for other patrons. He did get the water and very coldly threw it on the counter with not even a thank you, or eye contact. After grabbing menus ourselves and waiting longer to try and order a pizza, we finally gave up and had to go down the street to another restaurant. It was a real shame since we were guests at the hotel and had just checked in. I'm not sure what the manager's job was, but it wasn't to help where help was needed. She completely ignored us the entire time we were in the restaurant. And she seemed very unprofessional as she kept disappearing into the back for long periods of time. It appeared that maybe she was a food runner? Not sure. We try it again in the morning to give them another shot for breakfast. This time, instead of a sit-down service, there is a sign that says to order at the register. Very confusing. We get to the register and the girl says it will be a minute and to take a seat. So we do. Without placing an order. After sitting for several minutes, we realized the wait staff had told us the wrong information and that we did in fact need to place our order at the register before sitting down. However, this particular server would half ring the register and half serve customers at their tables. She gave one table the entire carafe of cream that was for all of the coffee in the restaurant. I had to go up to the register and ask for more cream for my coffee. And they ran out of vodka. So no Bloody Mary's with breakfast. It was also very odd to all have the same number for breakfast for my party of three, but the food came out in 5 minute intervals. So the other two members of my party were almost finished by the time my food came out. Staff needs to be retrained. They have no idea what's going on. Half of them just stand around or disappear into the back . Or maybe, the eight managers posted up on the wall are a bit too many. Because we got zero service the entire time we were there. Not that it was busy, but one table sat for 20 min. at least with dirty food and dishes. We left before ever seeing the table get bussed. Since there's not many restaurants to choose from in Farmville, I really wanted to like this food and since it was at it was in our hotel, it would have been the most convenient to dine in. However, if I ever find myself there again, I will be sure to go elsewhere. I only give it 2 stars, because the food was pretty bland and plain but not terrible. (Although the quiche I got seemed like it came straight out of the freezer and into the microwave and was tepid.) read more

We were here in February. Since then lot has changed not necessarily for the better. Sassafras is closed. Campagna closed. Still I must say they need to step up their game. My husband posted a rating about check in. Poor. Catbird rooftop bar is nice. They say is has tapas. Pizza and pimento cheese aren't tapas. 3 of 4 pieces of dinner ware were dirty. Dinner entree of mussels consisted of 11 very small mussels. Lots is flat bread and little garlic or butter. Carbonara pizza was good though the egg was over cooked. We were among only a few tables seated after the dinner rush, so it wasn't busy at all, but our food took an hour, and when it did arrive, all of it was cold. The french fries - which we'd been told were delicious - were not even warm, and neither was our pizza. Unfortunately our server was not attentive, either. So my wife and I visited Effingham's for lunch. We were at Greenfront and decided to get lunch first as we would be doing lots of walking for the next few hours. We found a metered space on the street but barely had enough change to feed it. 45 minutes is what we ended up with. We thought that would be plenty. Incorrect. The restaurant is in a newly renovated boutique hotel. Both the hotel and restaurant look very cool. The place was busy when we got there. It looked like a lot of the university employees were having lunch.there only seemed to be one employee working with some minor assistance from back of the house. As we sat and waited for everything. We knew the time was running out on our parking. Slowly the food started trickling out of the kitchen. The food was very good once it got there. The shrimp app was very good but it was not huge and the wait continued very quickly. Then i got my side salad...yay!? So now my wife has nothing and i have a salad. So i gobbled that up and it was a good thing because the WAIT was on again. Our entrees finally showed and my burger was good but they didn't omit the bun as i had requested. No big deal but a waste of a bun. My wife's salmon salad was very good. The salad was mediocre but the salmon was cooked very nicely. We were happy to have a water pitcher because they never asked if we wanted anything to drink either. We asked for the bill and there was some confusion there. We felt bad for the one front of house employee as they were in the weeds the whole time. The food was good. The service was not, but i would say that they employee working was working hard and doing as good as they could under the circumstances. Let me begin by saying that the FOOD at Effingham's is just amazing--definitely the best pizza in town! Now the but...BUT I have to say that the service really leaves much to be desired. My husband and I came in for dinner this past Friday, arrived around 7:45PM and there were only 2 or 3 other tables with guests. It look about 10 minutes for anybody to even acknowledge us and offer us drinks (and we also ordered an appetizer right away as we were starving). A few minutes later, ANOTHER person came to take our order...so we again put in our drink and fries appetizer order, as well as our pizza order. After about 30 minutes of NOTHING (not even a check in), we finally asked about our fries--10 minutes later they came, ice cold. At this point, we were starving and ate them but did complain about the temperature--they were taken off the bill, thankfully. Our pizza came about 10 minutes later (more than 45-50 minutes after we ordered), and while it was delicious, the meal was ruined by the service. We WANT to love Effingham's. We WANT to make this a usual spot for us...but unless service improves, it will not be at the top of our list. read more

I came into Effingham's expecting a good farmville meal. However, that is not what I received. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with smiling faces and EXCELLENT service. Heather and Katherine gave me advice and guidance on the best menu choices and explained them all in great detail. I ended up deciding on ordering an appetizer of fried oysters, and a main course of their "Smashburger". As soon as I saw the food come out, I knew it was going to be a wonderful experience. The oysters were fried to perfection and topped with what appeared to be banana peppers. The dipping sauce that came with it was excellent as well. However, what really set the evening off was the burger. It's not very often that I get a good Burger around town, but today I have to reject that idea. This was hands down, one of the best burgers I have had in quite some time. It was cooked to perfection, the bun was soft, yet crispy. The real adventure started once I took the first bite. Powerful flavor, fresh ingredients, and passion radiated from this meal. I look forward to my next visit, and I can only hope that it will be just as wonderful. read more
