Went here for happy hour with my happy hour guru friend, Shara. It was packed, but we were able to score a couple of seats at the bar as a couple was leaving. The bartender greeted us immediately and handed us our menus. The bar is always crowded. It is a local fave and I could tell that on my first visit. I ordered the white bean soup for an appetizer and the chicken entrée you see here. I was hangry! I did not have drinks but the bartender was awesome and made me amazing flavored iced tea. There are outdoor heaters which is nice, but there is a lot of seating inside, both at the bar and at tables. They have a happy hour, but it is only inside at the bar. While I had a beer, my friends raved about the au pair mixed drink. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich for dinner, and it did not come with fries, I had to order them on the side. I ordered tater tots and they were seven dollars, which seemed pretty pricey, but they give you a really big basket. Definitely a size that could be shared between at least two people. One of my favorite spots in Montclair for beers with friends or dinner with the wife. Top food choices include any of the burgers, chicken sandwiches, bar pies, and the salmon dinner entree`. The atmosphere is casual and inclusive. You can go to Egan to watch a sports game or sit and chat with your group. Outside patio is a bonus. Staff and service is great. We went to this restaurant after having been there a few times before. We've always liked the food in the past, but this time, the food wasn't the same. Quality was considerably less but prices were still high. I ordered the falafel platter, which was bland falafel over a bed of shredded cabbage and parsley. If there was lemon and oil in the vegetables, I didn't taste it. The hummus was overpowered by sesame oil (do they know sesame oil is not the same as tahini?). The salads my family got were bland. They charged for a refill on coffee, and when I got my food to go, they didn't even give me the hummus or baba ganoush in the takeout bag. $170 later, we will not be back. read more

To clarify, my review is more a reflection of the food and the price; I felt like the service was excellent and would go back simply for that. I have to give a shout-out to our server because, upon walking in, he gave our group of 9 complimentary scones and biscuits. That was a welcome surprise. Unfortunately, I was just so unpleasantly surprised by the prices of the food. The Cobb salad, which I was originally eyeing, was a whopping $18. I'm from the Bay Area, where food prices are already ridiculously high and I don't bat an eye at a delicious $15 salad, but $18 for a Cobb salad?! That's just a bit much, even for me. The most reasonably-priced things on the menu were the burgers, hovering around $12. Because I wanted something lighter, I ended up ordering the chargrilled chicken breast sandwich. It was pretty tasteless, for a $13 chicken sandwich. The chicken was relatively dry, and really the only taste was from the onion in the sandwich. The fries were great, even though I asked for the thin-cut fries and ended up with the normal fries (which is fine, I do like them either way). One thing I did notice was that our server cleaned up our plates really quickly, even before people were done eating. Like me. I was talking, as one normally does at such an establishment, and at one point when I looked back to the other side of the table, I realized I was the only one with a plate in front of me. I was content to just eat my fries and keep hanging out (potentially ordering another drink), but because everyone else's plates had been cleared, I felt uncomfortable being the only one snacking on my fries although I basically still had a full cup of it. Second time last Thursday Was impossible to get parking, drinks from bartender, ordered a pizza or flatbread with sausage and when we got it it was super soggy. It fell fin half and the toppings fell off. Not crispy for a flatbread too many toppings I had to return, don't order thier 12 inch flat bread. I didn't eat it, I had one bite of one slice. It sat for an hour, and got cold. The bartender asked if I wanted to wrap it up, I told him "absolutely not it was terrible" I still got the bill for $16 pizza I took a bite of. I didn't argue. The point of Yelp is to bring it to thier attention before a bad review I did, the situation wasn't corrected with "can I bring you something else?" Which I'd have gladly looked at the menu again. I'm unsure where bad ratings have come from, but those that wrote them must've gotten really drunk on Egan's home brews or one of their rare scotch offerings. I came here on a Friday night for dinner but after looking through the menu there wasn't really anything that was look appealing to me (it all seemed rather boring). We ended up settling on a small pizza to share and drinks. The highlight of this place in my opinion was that they have Magner's cider, a drink that I really love but have had trouble finding around here. The pizza was pretty good and was filling for two people. We did not end up actually eating dinner here but I really enjoyed the environment. Really nice bar scene. We stopped in after a dinner and they were able to seat us right away. We ordered the blueberry bread pudding which was delicious! The bread pudding was warm and topped with a generous scoop of ice cream. They did have half bottles of wine available which was perfect for the two of us since we only had about 50 minutes before indoor dining would close. The two half bottle options were a Pinot Noir and a Simi Cabernet. We went with the Simi Cabernet but was a little too dry for our taste. Bathrooms were clean and service was great! Came here to eat on a not so crowded Sunday afternoon. There was plenty of parking and seating available. If you go after 5 it becomes very packed here otherwise. Maybe it was because it wasn't busy, but the food took a while to comeout. And to my surprise the wings that we ordered came out a good 15 minutes after our food did. We are already finished when they brought them out. I was certain that they have been forgotten. The wings were also extremely dry and overcooked. Also the grilled cheese that my son ordered was so salty that he couldn't even eat it. The beer that I normally order was flat and undrinkable. Our server has changed it for another and that was was good. I was not impressed with food or the pace at this place. However, be warned, the food is subpar at best. Ordered one of their reputable pizzas, the Mia Hamm, and was very underwhelmed. The presentation is lovely, but there wasn't a healthy balance of sauce to crust ratio and the toppings overpowered the pizza itself. The bacon was the only delicious thing on the plate. If you're a regular and the specials seem to repeat themselves, its because there's a high demand for those specials in particular. - The liquor selection. Egan's is one about 6 or 7 restaurants in Montclair with bar service. When this place says it has a full bar, it means it has a full bar. - The ambience. Chris Egan, half owner, is originally from Ireland and went to great lengths to make this place as authentic as possible. - The demographic. If you're coming with your family, we generally expected you early. If you were an older couple who left the kids at home, we expected you later. If you were a young couple on a date, we expected you later. And if you were single and with a group of friends, we expected you to close the place down. Some of my personal favorites from the menu (in order): - Appetizers: 1) crispy maple wings; 2) mussels - Entrees: 1) baby back ribs; 2) hanger steak; 3) sea scallops; 4) beef and cabbage - Sides: 1) Hand cut chips (excellent) - Desserts: 1) warm sticky toffee pudding; 2) chocolate bread and butter pudding; 3) chocolate truffle cake Other things to note: don't forget about the parking lot in the back. I have moved back to the area, after 6 years living in Austin, TX --- was excited to revisit the places I once deemed great. After a street festival on Walnut St in Montclair I decided to round up the group of friends visiting from NYC and other parts of NJ at Egan & Sons, partly because it was convenient, and because I remember this place being pretty good. Sadly, with the craft beer movement in full swing in NJ, I'm disappointed to see a weak variety of craft beer offerings at Egans. In addition the hostess, was pretty much nowhere to be found, so we had to seat ourselves. The bartenders were even worse... It took 15 minutes to hunt them down and get our next drink... One of them was complaining about being hungover, and not wanting to be there. After seating ourselves, we had caught the hostess attention and requested menus... She plopped the menus onto our table and disappeared. Our waitress was the worst offender..... She seemed like she was over it and simply hated life --- a very "meh" attitude and just gave off the most depressing energy. Overall this was the worst experience I've ever had at Egan & Sons... I had to constantly apologize to my friends making up excuses for this place.... They were all made to feel uncomfortable. It's quite simple, if you hate your job, or your life, then don't work in an industry that has to deal with people. Though reluctantly I must add ; The bartenders are not very professional, and most unwelcoming; they simply go through their occupational duties. I always tip at least 20% and when I do not even so much as a thank you. The food is barely palatable; In fact, the regulars I have met tell me they all eat elsewhere prior to popping-in at Egan's. This review is based solely on their wings and bar pizza. The wings are AMAZING. The sauce the wings are coated in is so delicious and they have a certain crunch about them that makes them very distinct. I think they are the best wings I've ever had, hands down. They were so good that I started eating them immediately and totally forgot to take a picture, woops! Also, they are served with a creamy blue cheese sauce for dipping and this is also amazing. I am usually not a huge fan of blue cheese at all but there is something different about it. Its not at all chunky, which I like. Its lighter but still has the perfect amount of flavor. I've also ordered the bar pizza and it was very good. Its a little bit bigger than what a personal pie looks like, thin crust and was cooked well done (which to me is a plus). My wife and I decided to go out to watch the World Cup final today and the first place we thought of was Egan and Sons. We called their number several times both Friday and Saturday, asking if they opened earlier to view the game, and got no response. Based on their hours on their website and phone system, they open at noon, so we went at 1045 to see if we could get a spot before the game kicked at 11. The place was packed. We found a spot at the end of the bar where we could stand and watch the game. A table behind us was asking my wife and I to step to the side to which we accomodated, but apparently it wasn't good enough. Due to their inability to test their technology before the game, the large TV they set up to accommodate the dining room was not working, so the room was viewing the small TV in the bar. This older blonde manager-type lady (maybe an owner?) came over and gave us a very rude request to get out of the way of the people at the table. I would describe this lady as a "see you next Tuesday", except I won't be going back to this sh!tty bar ever again. I told this lady of our many attempts to contact her establishment to find out about their modified hours. She ignored our complaint about their terrible communication and said that the people in the dining room were there for all the games so they knew the time they opened and clearly favored them over us. She then proceeded to tell me, in a condescending manner, that the bar next door has plenty of room and I can sit right in front of the TV. Thanks for the tip. At half time, we left and went to our local spot, The Verona Inn, which is next door to our home and had a great time. The place had great energy, food, drinks, service, and even gave out some free beer glasses! (Das Boot German Beer Glasses.) I will never go back to Egan and Sons. Even the group next to us said the place was crap and the staff and management was rude, but they chose it as the most convenient place for their group to meet. I am giving it two stars because the bar tenders we're pleasant. Otherwise, avoid this place unless you want sh!tty service, in a sh!tty bar, with sh!tty drinks. read more
