I am new to Upper Montclair and have visited Egan's about a half dozen times in the past 4 months. Nice atmosphere with a decent vibe and mix. Though reluctantly I must add ; The bartenders are not very professional, and most unwelcoming; they simply go through their occupational duties. I always tip at least 20% and when I do not even so much as a thank you. The food is barely palatable; In fact, the regulars I have met tell me they all eat elsewhere prior to popping-in at Egan's. My wife and I decided to go out to watch the World Cup final today and the first place we thought of was Egan and Sons. We called their number several times both Friday and Saturday, asking if they opened earlier to view the game, and got no response. Based on their hours on their website and phone system, they open at noon, so we went at 1045 to see if we could get a spot before the game kicked at 11. The place was packed. We found a spot at the end of the bar where we could stand and watch the game. A table behind us was asking my wife and I to step to the side to which we accomodated, but apparently it wasn't good enough. Due to their inability to test their technology before the game, the large TV they set up to accommodate the dining room was not working, so the room was viewing the small TV in the bar. This older blonde manager-type lady (maybe an owner?) came over and gave us a very rude request to get out of the way of the people at the table. I would describe this lady as a "see you next Tuesday", except I won't be going back to this sh!tty bar ever again. I told this lady of our many attempts to contact her establishment to find out about their modified hours. She ignored our complaint about their terrible communication and said that the people in the dining room were there for all the games so they knew the time they opened and clearly favored them over us. She then proceeded to tell me, in a condescending manner, that the bar next door has plenty of room and I can sit right in front of the TV. Thanks for the tip. At half time, we left and went to our local spot, The Verona Inn, which is next door to our home and had a great time. The place had great energy, food, drinks, service, and even gave out some free beer glasses! (Das Boot German Beer Glasses.) I will never go back to Egan and Sons. Even the group next to us said the place was crap and the staff and management was rude, but they chose it as the most convenient place for their group to meet. I am giving it two stars because the bar tenders we're pleasant. Otherwise, avoid this place unless you want sh!tty service, in a sh!tty bar, with sh!tty drinks. read more

This place is AMAZING! The staff, especially Jackie, are simply great people. My fiancé and I have been here twice and we are in love with the layout of the patio. The maple bacon buffalo wings are a must have. The froze of the day was delicious! The short rib appetizers was so tasty (hat's off to the chef). I do have a love/hate relationship with this place. 1) Bottled beer is never cold. Never get it. 2) Food is not consistent. Steaks are sometimes pure garbage or perfect. 3) Wine changes too frequently. IE: The Malbec you had 2 days ago has been replace with a cheaper version and lets just serve it and see if you notice. We order wings to go when we don't know what to cook. It's been 4-5 times now in the last 6 months. One time they're great. Next time they're undercooked or not sauced the same. Each time they tell you a time and it's ready 10 mins early which is a problem when you want your food hot. People working there aren't super friendly or helpful. read more

Came here on a Saturday after a hike. Beautiful sunny day so we decided to eat outside. There was a bit of a wait but it was worth it! Service was excellent and the seating was comfortable. Beautiful back patio that's been expanded to accommodate more outdoor seatings. Delicious food. Good service.

Clientele is mostly 30+ but their is a fair batch of Post college kids. The drinks are expensive for NJ and they come in skinny glasses ($8 for a rail drink) the bar is long and narrow, but there is seating in the front and very back. The ambiance was nice, music not too loud to maintain conversation, and you could probably dance if you were feeling up for the stares from the talkers. read more

Just picked up a take order from Eagan's. Delicious as always!!! We ordered there famous wings, the Bobby salad with shrimp, truffle fries, and the steak tacos. All though the food was fantastic the best part of the meal was the cocktail of the day! Would of loved this meal on the back deck but happy I was able pick up and have it in backyard. read more

We came in for a quick bite and decided on sharing two appetizers: curried chicken platter and bbq maple wings with a side of regular cut fries. Everything came out in a timely matter and were all piping hot (nothing worse than lukewarm food!) more importantly everything was so delicious! Curried chicken was very mild and came with garlic yogurt, pita triangles, and small serving of brown rice. The wings were crispy and packed some heat - not unbearable though. Served with a very delicious and creamy blue cheese sauce and come large celery sticks. From the outside the restaurant looks like a whole in the wall but when you enter you quickly realize this place is big. There is a parking lot in the back. We didn't realize this and ended up paying for street parking. Also surprised to find that the place is family friendly- lots of children. We sat at the bar and had drinks and the drinks were great and the bustling bartenders were very friendly and attentive. Dinner my wife and I had burgers and shared fries and our friends had sliders and shrimp taco's. Food was good and fries were crispy. The atmosphere was nice. The burger was not the best burger I have ever had but it was hot and definitely good because we cleared our plates. I find that with pubs that have a wide menu selection it is hard to perfect every meal and satisfy everyone. But since everyone has different culinary tastes you need to have a wide menu. Overall it is a great local bar with food in our case hit the spot. Would definitely come back again. Not every restaurant needs to strive for a Michelin star. Tried their outdoor dinning experience and was a bit frustrated at the serving for the price. I ordered a fish and chip dish which cost $22. Problem 1 - the breading was soggy ! 2 - one small fish for 22$ wtf!!! , I complained to the waiter and ask why is there only one fish but could not give me an answer. 3 - 22$ price for a fish and chip should include 2 / 3 chunk of filets and was ripped off for the price . Came in on a Thursday. We instantly got seated which is a plus because we were hungry and had 5 with us. Seems to me lately all I've been craving is burgers because I did ordered the Egan's Classic Double Cheeseburger. Rare, with a side of truffle fries. (Which is a must get!). The burger was amazing. Bun is very light and the burger is medium filling. The fries probably do take care of the rest. Paired it up with a nice Blanton's single barrel bourbon - Neat. One side note - friend did order the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. While it did taste good. It gave my friend terrible stomach issues. This place has an amazing atmosphere, decent selection of craft beers both locally brewed and out of state. Very good selection of spirits and the service is satisfactory. I visited Egan's with my fiancee to have a beer or two. The bar was crowded, the clienetle was your typical Montclair yuppie upscale set, and the atmosphere was loud, but cozy. Most of the crew here seemed like they had just gotten off from work, with lots of casual business attire present. The bar had an authentic Irish pub feel to it, with neat Irish woodwork and Irish art scattered throughout the bar. The beer here was pretty good, and the home-brewed stuff ranged from mediocre to very good, which is to be expected. L.D. is incorrect about his assessment of the beers. Apparently, the bar buys the wort from a supplier and then ferments, stores, chills, clarifys, carbonates and then pumps it straight to the bar. So, they do the second part of the brewing process here, which is akin to buying crushed tomatoes w/basil in cans to make pizza sauce with at a homemade pizza joint, instead of going out and using fresh tomatoes. In other words, who cares, its still technically a brew pub, with some great tasting beers. read more

I came here a few weeks ago with some friends and we really enjoyed this place. The restaurant is huge and has a bar area out front, restaurant area in back, and an outdoor seating area out back. They have quite a good selection of drinks and an extensive menu and they will sell a small flight of their house brews (not on the menu). Yesterday afternoon was the first time my friends and I have been to Egan & Sons. It was a group of 7 of us. There was no wait time to get a table since it was fairly empty at 4:20pm when we arrived. There were two people at the bar and another 6 people in other tables. Our waiter took FOREVER to take our order for food and took FOREVER to bring our food. It took about an hour for our food to get to our table which was very disappointing for not only myself but the whole party. Considering the place was not busy at all, there was no reason for our waiter to have taken so long to take our order but also there was no sight of him to wave him down. I was so close to getting up and looking for him. Definitely he did not deserve a tip at all! Not only was the service bad, but also the food kinda sucked. I ordered the Egan's classic burger and the fries were ok but mostly all burnt. The burger was mediocre, the bun was almost as hard as a rock, the meat was not juicy at all, so dry, and it was kinda small. It should not be $12, it should cost like $5. But even a $5 McDonald's cheeseburger and fries tastes better that burger I ordered here! My boyfriend ordered a Reuben sandwich and it didn't look like one at all. I didn't even want to try it. This place is great--the bartenders are lively, the music is good, and the crowd is really laid back (at least on a Wednesday night at 10pm). Went here with my friend after running a few errands with him and it was a great place to relax. We wanted to sit at the bar and some guys were so polite and moved over a seat for us in both directions so we could sit together since everyone was spaced out at the bar and there were no two-seat sections left. We got there right before the kitchen closed but they let us get an order in quick before that happened. I got the beet salad and it was amazing. I love beets, every time I see them on a menu anywhere, I have to get them. This salad was perfectly done--sometimes beet salads are just boring but this one had the right amount of cheese, walnuts (I think. If I remember correctly), and dressing. I love when a place does not put a TON of dressing on a salad (I actually dislike salad dressing beyond human comprehension). I ended up ordering the house red ale as well and that was amazing--but it knocked me off my feet. I don't know if it was because I only had a salad or what, but that red ale packed a punch (and I had two). I always like to try the house draft beverages over anything else and Egan and Sons definitely delivered on their brew. Since I'm in Montclair hanging out with my friend a lot, I'll probably be back here at some point. The best maple chicken wings on the planet, but they are pretty expensive. We always have to get at least 2 orders (even my 9 year old wants her own order of wings). I used to love the ribs, but they stopped making them. The mashed potatoes are really good. We always sub the mashed for the French fries that come with the filet mignon. The fish tacos are one of my favorite things on the menu. Grandma is a crab cake connoisseur and said Egan's was very good.. The burgers and pizza are also surprisingly good. I went in to ask for a table of 9. I expected a long wait, as we had a large party and short notice. To my surprise, the host said it was only going to be a 20 minute wait. After waiting 30 minutes, I asked the host for an update, and he said 5 more minutes, so I returned to the bar to wait. Another 20 minutes go by, and the host stops by to say they're setting up the table and he'll seat us in just a few moments. This back and forth continues and we end up waiting for an hour and a half. I have to return to the host for the third time who finally says "I'm sorry, the server said he sat you already". When we order our food, I get the pizza. Pizza is a pretty straight forward thing to make. They bring out everyone's meal, and mine hasn't come out yet. My friends politely wait for my food to come out, but after 5-10 minutes their food was getting cold, so they had to start eating. My pizza comes out thirty minutes later once everyone else was done with their meal. So we're convinced he straight up forgot to put in the pizza. People make mistakes. It's fine. Just be honest with us and apologize. Instead he tells us how there was this crazy influx of pizza orders and it couldn't all fit in the oven. If that were actually true, why not tell me that when I ordered? Anyway, he took the pizza off the bill at least. read more

Went here last night. For a Tuesday night, it was as busy as most places are on the weekends. Unfortunately their parking lot is the size of a postage stamp. So parking is an issue, but not a huge one. You may have to walk a block or two but it's good for you. Very friendly staff that I experienced from the moment I walked in. The hostess was such a sweetheart! We wanted to sit outside since it was such a beautiful evening. We could have sat inside right away but we waited. The hostess directed me to the bar and told me where I could wait until she called my name. I grabbed two Angry Orchards on tap and sat outside. They provide many tables to sit and wait. I had my cider (and my wife) so I was happy! After we were called and seated the great experience continued. Our waiter was very sweet and accommodating, offering to answer any questions about the menu. We decided to try several appetizers before our mains. Chicken wings, Parmesan truffle fries, and corned beef and cabbage spring rolls. They were all delicious but their wings were the shining star. For our mains I ordered the lamb burger and my wife had the cobb salad. Both were delicious. Halfway through the meal we were already deciding when we should come back! Their desserts sounded yummy but we were simply too full! So we opted for tea and cappuccino. A solid five stars! Can't wait to return! read more
