This is my favorite restaurant in Indianapolis. It's an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere, where the idea is that you come for an experience, not just quick food. Larry, the chef, has put his heart and soul in this place, and it speaks through every meal I've had. The staff is more than ready to have a long conversation with you, at the expense of a quick meal, because that's the way it's meant to be at Eggshell. Larry consistently innovates to keep the menu fresh and seasonal, and I'm sure he'd be willing to share with you the ins and outs of how he makes the dish, where the idea came from, and maybe even give you a sample before you leave. This place has been in my bookmarks for a while now. I'm kicking myself for not going sooner cuz it's awesome! This is a cute little bistro that gives that reminded me of a European cafe and a big city coffee house combined. The atmosphere is super laid back, so if that's not your thing, steer clear. There are disclaimers about not making changes to the menu, how you should order your food first, and how this is not a fast food experience. On any given day, this may have annoyed me, especially since my fiance has a severe peanut allergy. The disclaimer on the menu warns them to "order something else". Which wouldn't be an issue if there wasn't a possibility of cross-contamination. This was my reason for docking a star. As far as the food and coffee, they're amazing. I ordered the artichoke tart and my fiance tried special quiche of the day. Both hit the breakfast/brunch spot. I ordered a latte while he opted for the pour over, both were so good we didn't add sugar. After breakfast, we got the chance to meet Chef Larry, who told us the whole idea of the bistro stemmed from his design dissertation. I mentioned having seen the cold brew machine thingy (technical term) while I was in San Francisco. He said he had been trained at Blue Bottle (which is where I saw it). I stopped in Eggshell with a little less than an hour to spare, before I had to return to work. I was hoping to grab a quick coffee, and a piece of torte that I saw in the front case. Ordering the coffee was way more complicated than it needed to be. I just wanted a normal coffee with cream and sugar. After quite a wait, I got an overfilled, weak cup of coffee, and had to remind the waitress of the cream and sugar. I had to pour some of the coffee into the water glass just to add the cream. And the torte? By the time the waitress (who had no urgency whatsoever) finished taking the order of a couple that came in a few minutes after me, she had completely forgotten the torte, and I was out of time and disappointed. Then consider the owner of Eggshell has gone *all out* in every capacity of this place -- especially the brewing equipment. *full pour over bar with necessary Hario equipment *siphon pots (for a perfect coffee siphon the Ethiopian Tuktant or Sidamo). *full & insane Ojii cold brewing system (the giant glass orbs that are slow dripping your jaw to the floor). *Then, two espresso machines that are as polished as a vintage Triumph in an auto show. This list probably doesn't express my glee when I found out about the owner of this place not missing a step in his coffee set up. These are all the things I miss of living in San Francisco -- and lo! it all followed me here. They're serving LICK ice cream -- artisnal insanity that includes the likes of FENNEL! A full slate of pastries, a full food menu -- including a sweet potato, chorizo, black bean jalapeno hash with poached eggs (which... was underportioned, yes). The owner has put every ounce of his heart into every ounce of this place. You know when you read a website description like "with the charm of a London cafe," and you wonder if it really is true? Well... the owner has imported endless pieces from London and has given something to Carmel that I wish would happen in downtown Indy. The space is cramped and small, with an espresso machine and coffee bar as the focus of the restaurant. While the food and drinks are truly top-notch, my experience was not worth the small fortune we paid to dine at the Eggshell. My New Orleans iced coffee was, quite possibly, one of the richest, deepest, most delicious iced coffees I have ever tasted. At $4.50, it was pricy, but worth the cost. My husband had an orange juice that was $6.00. My husband also had the sweet potato hash. He thought it was tasty....but the serving size would have been more appropriate for a child than for an adult, and at $13, he was very disappointed. My quintessential quiche was rich and flavorful, stuffed with bacon, leeks, and tomatoes. The slice was on the small side, and I found myself slightly disappointed considering that I had paid $12 for it. After tip, for two tiny breakfast entrees and two beverages, we paid $46. Was the quality of food and beverage great? yes. But, the service was sub-par, we were scrunched into a tiny two-top table and surrounded by four other couples scrunched into two-top tables, and we were both STARVING a mere two hours after our meal. I wanted to love this place - and the food really was tasty. If you decide to check it out, be prepared to shell out a small fortune. I would go back for the coffee alone - that's how good it was - and I might just stick with a muffin or other pastry that we saw in the case full of goodies near the entry way to keep my pocket book full. We had a helpful server who walked us through the coffee/tea options and even brought us some small cups of things to taste! I had the strata and thought it was fabulous! This is the cutest darn brunchy place in all of the land. I absolutely love the French signage, photography and the shabby chic feel of the interior. I had heard a great deal about the coffees at Eggshell and as excited to check it out (they serve Blue Bottle--my favorite from San Fran). The menu offers a variety of interesting, not easily found items. I feasted on the sweet potato hash with chorizo and 2 sous vide poached eggs. But what I loved the most was the New Orleans iced coffee--cool and perfectly sweetened. So why you ask does this establishment get a mediocre 3 stars? Well, for a couple of reasons... 1. The prices make this a special occasion brunch. My coffee hash combo left me $24 less rich. And while everything was excellent, I didn't feel like $24 worth of goodness. 2. The portions are smallish. This is no place for a dude to find his hangover cure. I would have enjoyed a bit more iced coffee for the $5.50 price tag and the same for my hash...or perhaps include some toast? 3. The pacing. This was, to say the least, a leisurely brunch. The place is small and it wasn't too busy when we stopped by, but things did seem to take quite a while. They arguably have the best coffee in the area. The two dishes I have tried were absolutely delicious, but it's a pain to not be able to try anything else besides those two. They also do not help out with any dietary restrictions or small alterations to the dishes. I also wish there were more sides offered for those who can't find anything suitable on the menu. This place is really cool. Immediately once you walk in, the interior decoration and cute vintage nick nacks take you to a whole other world! It's a very nice destination for a "food journey." The food was very beautiful and you can tell that they put a lot of thought into their menu, but tbh, I didn't really like the taste. I'm pretty certain this was completely my fault though because I hate cheese and I forgot to ask for my food with no cheese. I know. We arrived about an hour after Eggshell opened and I'm pretty sure we were the first people there. We had wonderful service from the Barista, as he explained that the servers were not there for the first couple of hours because they were slow at first. His service was individualized and attentive. He was extremely knowledgeable about their coffee beans, the gourmet preparation, and the flavors of the coffee when it is hot, at room temperature, and cold. (Cool!) We decided on the the Brazilian coffee which was outstanding (not currently on the menu because they just got the beans in, but sure to make an appearance soon). The coffee is five stars. I might venture to say that it was the best cup of coffee I ever had....??? The food is the reason I took one star away. I can't really put my finger on why it deserves only 4 stars but it just seems right. You see, I want to say it is because of the portion sizes (small), but here I am, an hour after the meal, content and satiated. Maybe it is because of the price? A little on the high end- about $30 for coffee and a small breakfast for two. It is definitely NOT because of lack of flavor or quality. The flavors were fantastic. I had the Quintessential Quiche which had tomatoes, leek, and applewood smoked bacon in it. Very good, very moist, very rich. It came with a fruit cup on the side which did not disappoint- sweet berries, the best kiwi I've ever had, and juicy pineapple. My boyfriend had the sweet potato hash which was better than the quiche in my opinion. Two poached eggs top shredded sweet potatoes, black beans and jalapeno. YUM. The decor is super cute. My mom and I stopped by for coffee & we were so impressed! We were seated & well cared for. The coffee (roasted in San Francisco on Monday's and shipped the following Wednesday to the cafe) was INCREDIBLE. I got the Polar Opposite and she got the African brew. Not to mention the decor is lovely! The slow pace/Larry's caring attitude was just what we were hoping for (*seeing prior reviews, if you'd like speedier service there are directions on how to order so you get the quickest service at the bottom of the menu). If you'd would like a quieter experience, I suggest sitting in the front for the speakers in the back were mildly loud (easy fix!). With so many Carmel coffee shops going out of business, this one is worth the trip! read more

Womp womp...mercy me, this review pains me to write I hardly ever write a 2 star review! On the positive, this cafe is oozing with greatness. Their menu offers a delicious array of creative innovative dishes like grits with cod/potato croquettes and dishes made with pickled fig and rose water. Even my simple fruit bowl was beautiful. They even have lamb bacon (mmm bacon). In addition, they offer some lovely drinks for example: Kyoto cold brew drip coffee which is a very unique method of brewing coffee one drip at time over 14 hours. I not only appreciated the taste but could probably run a marathon (huge caffeine punch). You can tell there is a lot of passion behind the creation of the dishes and a lot of thought into making a unique dining experience for guests. What rubbed me the wrong way was their disclaimer listed at the bottom of the menu. I get the laid back/no alterations to menu items vibe they wish to offer guests. I do get it, but when you ask for an egg as a side dish and told that would be too difficult to make (given all the complex egg dishes on the menu) you're left a little baffled. I also understand taking moments to relax and enjoy your meal/experience with your friends/partner/spouse but service was so awkwardly slow. Then our experience concluded with our bill (ipad dropped off at our table) without assistance/explanation on how to split the bill and annoyance from our server when asked for help because we were nervous about missing up the system. Unfortunately, it just seemed the chill-axing atmosphere/menu disclaimer came across as their pretentious vibe being more important then taking care of guests. The atmosphere is really chill here so if you are a typical American and want to get in and out, you won't! You must have patience, but the quiche is SO worth the wait and the coffee's too. It's a small cafe - we could overhear a little of the nearby table of 4 quiet adults. Our little table just fit the 3 of us & would have been perfect for just 2. Prices on the food were higher than I expected, however, the offerings were definitely a higher caliber of ingredients and flavors than the average breakfast stop. I wouldn't recommend Eggshell to those who enjoy big plates of fried eggs, skillet meat and potatoes with pancakes & toast on the side. This is a bistro experience with crafted plates of food. At first, we were concerned with what appeared to be small servings. Husband was full with Grilled Pancetta Crostini and I enjoyed the Parisian Toast with fresh blueberry/fig chutney. As slow as molasses...that has been kept in the refrigerator all week. It's a shame because Eggshell Bistro is an interesting concept but their execution is horrible. We understand that it's a small place. You can see how small the kitchen is as soon as you walk in. But it is simply unforgivable to have to wait at least 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledges you, another 30 to get your food (more on that later), and another 10 or so after that to get the 2 cups of regular black coffee you ordered at the same time as your food. The main problem, in our opinion, is that there was one person responsible for seating everyone, bussing tables, taking orders, and making everyone's drinks...ON A SATURDAY MORNING. Not only was he overworked but he also wasn't terribly efficient. If they added just one more person to work the dining area, this review might have been better. As for the food, they mixed up our order with the table next to us. Unfortunately for the table next to us, we got served first and took a couple bites before realizing it was not our order. By then we didn't care. A sugar packet would have been good at that point after sitting there with nothing but jazzy French music and 2-year-old magazines to keep us occupied. I would be okay with that if the taste was incredible, but is was NOT! My tiny slice of quiche was served with an equally small side of fruit. It was plane and ordinary--it was $13. What a waste. My friends' portions were also small. To give you an idea, every thing was served on bread and butter plate. Also the menu ingredients were written in uncommon native words. Before I walked in the door, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a bike rack in sight. You're on the Monon for crying out loud! They were back in my good graces when I saw their GORGEOUS espresso machine. We ordered the French Toast and Polar Opposites (hot espresso layered with cool, sweet cream). Both were superb, but ill-timed. We were about ready to ask for our check before we even received our lattes. After seeing our licked-clean plates, our server just said "dessert drinks it is" and set them on the table. Keeping true to its Persian roots, be prepared to wait and wait and wait for your food, drinks and check. They are slow, but boy is it delicious. Will I be back? I'll start by saying that every time we eat here, we are never disappointed. The truffled egg brioche I enjoyed today along with the "polar opposite" coffee, is a breakfast I would eat every single day if I could. Why not eat it every day? Unfortunately I do not have 2 hours to spare most days brunch. The service was horrendous. But let me say this had nothing to do with the very capable and friendly server we had today, the problem was, he was the only server for the entire resturant. It just is not humanly possible to do everything required of a server (get waters, coffees, take orders, run food, refill water, refill coffees, clear plates, present checks) for an entire establishment.
