Some food delivery pick-ups and the DoorDash ding going off in the background. Ordered the molokhia soup, lentil soup, combo mazza with fattoush less pita instead of the salata masria, feteer chicken shawarma and side of falafel. $49.78 They are out of the Fakhfakhina drink, sounds interesting with the strawberries, ice cream, sounds kind of like a float. I couldn't try a taste of the molokhia soup to see if it would be good or not. I have no idea what Jute is, had to look it up. It's a green leaf soup. I went with the feteer chicken since it's a light breading vs the hawashi. The lentil is extremely runny, doesn't taste as expected, rather subtle flavors, mostly bland. Some rice as filler. Comes in a small cup. The falafels are shaped like small donuts, they are crispy, but the inside is soft. They aren't too bad, just mostly taste the oil from the fry session more than the chick peas. Super light and crunchy though. The roasted eggplants are food, has a nice kick to it. The hummus is super smooth and a tad runny, reminds me of tahini sauce. The fattoush is okay. Could use some sumac to flavor it up some. The cucumbers are too water logged, tomatoes aren't ripe and lettuce is wilted. The Molokhia soup has a rather slimy and glutinous texture, it's quite odd. Not for me at all. Comes in a large bowl. The waiter waiting on me is eating behind the checkout counter after he dropped off my last dish. The feteer is an Egyptian quesadilla. Cheese, tomato, green peppers, black olives and chicken shawarma. It's good with the hummus or the garlic sauce. I've never tasted Egyptian food before and I finally got the opportunities on a beautiful summer evening. I've been wanting to try this restaurant since they were located in Westland. They've now relocated to Garden City, so not that much further away from the original location. Parking is in the back of the building, but don't worry, there's a door that'll lead you right to the restaurant. There's plenty of signage so you won't get lost. Once seated, we ended up ordering 2 appetizers and 3 authentic entrees. They were all different but very enjoyable. By appearance and taste, so much respect is placed behind each dish to keep them true to their roots. Customer service was absolutely amazing! He was so humble and willing to explain each dish to us and how the meals are prepared the Egyptian way. I'm really glad we had the opportunity to try a taste of Egypt. read more

Finally I had the chance to try Egyptian Kitchen with my Egyptologist sister. It helps to have someone along who knows what you should order. We ordered falafel to start, which she says is a special kind you find in Egypt - it's green in the middle. The falafel is served with hummus and fresh pita bread. It was a good appetizer. For entrees, we split orders of koshari (the Egyptian national dish), the Feteer chicken shawarma (which I've had before and liked), the macaroni with bechamel, and my nephew had chicken tenders and fries because he's a kid. Everything was great, my favorite is still the Feteer. And I must say my nephew's fries were surprisingly good and fresh. We also had a drink that had lemon juice and mint that was quite refreshing. For dessert, we had Umm Ali, which tasted like a soupier version of bread pudding, but was quite delicious. Most portions, and particularly the dessert, were big enough to split between multiple people. We had lots of leftovers. A friend of mine suggested we check this place out even though it's on the other side of the earth. I was really looking forward to eating here since their website and menu looked really good. Walking on, the place has decent seating, and all 4 of us decided to try a few dishes. We started with the hummus and bread, along with some eggplant pickles. I didn't try the eggplant, but was told it was good. The hummus was really good (it's always better fresh) and the bread that went with it was quite tasty. I ended up going with the Kabab Halla, and it was fantastic. Not terribly spicy, but good non the less. My friend got the Feteer Sojok and let me taste the food. It was really delicious! We all loved our food, and overall a positive experience. I wish they had fountain drinks here instead of canned pop. I don't know why it bothers me so much when places do this, and this isn't the first time it's happened. As someone who hit's the beverages hard, I need something to wash down all this food with. On the upside, they do have Turkish coffee here. I would have tried some, but did not since it was so late in the day. The server was good, but could have moved a bit quicker with items. The original Egyptian Kitchen is located in Westland, which I've been to before. It appears they opened up a location here in Garden City. Unlike the one in Westland, this one is an elegant sit-down restaurant where the other feels more like a takeout place. I can see some similarities with the menu items but I do believe there might be some dishes that are unique, although I could be wrong about that. I ordered two items on this day. The first was "molokhia", which in Lebanese culture is a leafy green that is stewed with chicken or beef and served with rice. The Egyptian version of this seems to be cut up more finely and has a smoother (as well as slimier) texture. This is served as a soup rather than a stew, but I really did enjoy the unique flavor. Although I will say without any kind of protein the texture can grow tiresome after awhile. They served it with this small and fluffy pita bread which I loved. My main dish was the "bamia", which literally means okra. It's a tomato based stew served with beef and okra; one that I also grew up eating. This version of it is more hearty than what I'm used to and therefore more satisfying. Some of the menu items are a bit overpriced, but if they taste nearly as good as what I had between my last two visits then it's worth it. read more

Thanks to Karim's and Al's reviews for steering me here today because Egyptian Kitchen is a true hidden gem worth your time to discover for yourself. Now, I'm of Irish descent with 0% Egyptian DNA (teasing Karim with that), but that only makes this all the more interesting. I've had Koshary in Columbus Ohio at one of my all-time favorite restaurants, Eat Greek and I loved it. The Koshary here at Egyptian Kitchen is every bit as good. It's a melding of Italian, Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine with rice, elbow macaroni, spaghetti, lentils, fried onion, chickpeas and three different sauces all mixed together. It makes for an interesting mix of flavors that will make you want to just keep eating till you are stuffed, which I did. Come with an appetite and don't worry about your wallet as the prices are very fair for so much good and hard to find food. It's also meatless so anyone who's vegetarian will have a new dish to enjoy. There's plenty of other things to enjoy here so don't be timid in your exploration of Egyptian cuisine. My first foray into Egyptian food, and I wasn't disappointed! (With the food) For already being unfamiliar with Egyptian food, service is not this place's forte. You walk in, and it's not ultimately clearly how this place runs. Do you order at the front desk and then sit down? We did. Do you sit at the table and have your order taken? We saw others did. So what's the answer? I couldn't tell you, but we did get our food eventually. We ordered the koshari and shish kafta. I've never tried koshari before, and was pleasantly surprised. It shouldn't work, but it works? Yes? Yes. They give you three sauces to go with the koshari, and I was generous with the tomato sauce. It really brought the whole thing together. Just be aware that koshari is a vegetarian dish! (I had no idea, but it's something to be aware of if you're looking for something meaty.) The shish kafta was nice and tasty as well. (And very meaty which is honestly a requirement if you're going to be a meat skewer.) Service is where this place needs to pay some attention. It seems like a family run business, and there was really one man working the front hosting, taking orders, and delivering food. Two tables arrived after us, and they were waiting quite awhile before their food orders were even taken. I think this is something that could easily be improved in the future, and I could have some extra patience to eat their food again some time soon. For now, give this place a try. Saw a good review for this place and decided it would be the first place I tried on my next visit to southeastern Michigan. I can tell you it was well worth the 800 mile drive. The food was excellent. There were many authentic Egyptian dishes to choose from, along with a good selection of the usual types of Middle Eastern dishes. The portions were large enough for two, especially if combined with an appetizer. All of the juice drinks were freshly squeezed & prepared. The service was excellent, and our server had a good sense of humor. If you like Greek and Middle Eastern Mediterranean food, and want to give something new a try, I highly recommend this place. read more

Had a special errand on this side of town and stopped through here based on Yelp reviews and because it sounded so unique! I had to get the Koshari Bowl, since it's the "national dish." I absolutely loved it. The sauces on the side made it amazing, it was generous with all the ingredients. The chickpeas were crunchy - not soggy - which really made the dish even better. I wish I had asked for a little extra "hot tomato" sauce, because I poured it on top and maybe didn't mix well enough, so the last 1/3 of my dish was mostly just rice and pasta - but that's on me for how I ate it. I would order this again in a heartbeat. Molokhia (green soup) was good. My wife LOVED it. I thought the texture was a bit off - like okra or aloe, it was a bit slimy or gelatinous - but the flavors were great and I'm certain that's how the dish is SUPPOSED to be, so don't let me dissuade you from ordering it. The biggest miss of the meal (in my opinion) was the lentil soup. It was very bland - even squeezing the whole provided lime into it. I love lentil soup, but this needed more flavor, or at the very least more salt. I also wish they offered cups of soup instead of just $7 bowls of soup. The kids ordered chicken nuggets and fries (I tried to convince them otherwise). The fries were good; the nuggets were mediocre, but I doubt anyone comes here for them. I would have liked to see the kids meal come with some kind of fruit or vegetable, rather than just fried chicken nuggets and French fries. We want our kids eating healthier these days! Service was pretty good. The hostess/server was nice, and very friendly and accommodating when we asked questions about the menu, since it was our first time in a bona fide Egyptian restaurant. We were the only table in the restaurant from 12:30pm-1:30pm on a Sunday, but I felt like we were out of water, or wishing for to-go boxes, or waiting for a check, or hoping for lentil soup, quite a bit considering we were the only table in the house. Fatah Masria - Beef chucks on a bed of rice. Molokia - A soup made of molokia leaves and spices. It has a texture that okra gives. Turkish Coffee. We enjoyed the Kabab Halla and Fatah Masria. I would skip the Koshari. Nothing special about it. How did this dish become Egypt's national dish ? The Molokia soup is unique. It's worth a try. Would I go back. Yes. We finally had a chance to give this place a go after speaking with an employee about spice levels. My Fiancé does not like things that are spicy hot. We order the Macaroni Bechamel, the Kabab Halla, Lesan Asfour soup and the Umm Ali. Everything was good with the exception of the soup. I am adding pictures so the difference can be noted. The soup was very bland and looked nothing like the menu picture. There are a few other things we would like to try so we will may give it another go. One thing I would recommend would be to shrink wrap the soup when people order take out. It leaked all over the paper bag and almost fell out of the bottom when we got home. I give the 3 stars for their reply to my inquiry about the soup, they claimed they use very minimal carrots, and the orzo always sinks. I have to say, last night was a real disappointment. We moved to the area in November and were really looking forward to trying this restaurant. We looked on their website and noticed they had delivery; for once, it was not delivered through a third party. So we opted for their in-house delivery instead of a pickup since it wasn't too far from the house (10 min). To my surprise, the delivery estimate was 30 min! So after an hour and twenty minutes of waiting, I called the store to check. They seemed baffled, asked for my name, came back to the phone and said it would be 15-30 min longer. So we waited and then immediately started getting texts from Doordash. 30 minutes later, more than 2 hours after ordering our cold food arrived via doordash. I am guessing that they weren't paying attention to delivery vs. pickup on their ordering system and our order sat there after being prepared. I get it. Things happen. But it would have been nice if the mistake had been acknowledged and at the very least we received hot food after a 2-hour wait. It was a few minutes before 10 pm before it was delivered. On top of everything, the order was incomplete and the pudding spilt inside the bag. I will say what we did get was quite tasty, but definitely would have been much better if it had been hot and fresh. We really like the feteer and the umm ali (what was left of it), so we may try it again, but the first experience was quite awful. Hope it was a one time thing! read more

Good was very delicious. I don't remember the names but the beef pot pie looking one was very tasty. We also had their sausage which is filled with spices and rice which had new flavors to me, very good. There was a ground beef pita bread dish that felt like a different version of a burger to me, oniony. We also had their fruit cocktail which was good and no added sugar. Aimée had an early morning flight from DTW, so we left my moms 80th birthday party and drove to Detroit to stay overnight. Always looking for something different, she came across the Egyptian Kitchen. After we settled into the hotel and put on The Godfather (she'd never seen it!) we ordered a few items to sample. Don't be dissuaded by the town or the strip mall it's in; this was an outstanding meal. We ordered the Koshari Bowl, called the National dish of Egypt. The description made it sound a bit like a garbage plate from Nick Tahoes in Rochester NY (that's a separate review) but this was nothing like that. Since we got it take out, it came in a pizza box, with three sauces. Truly a new dish to us, and we loved it. We couldn't finish it however, as we had the Macaroni Bechamel first. This was amazing! For those of you who love Moussaka or Pastitsio, this is very much like that except without the eggplant or beef. We also ordered the Feteer Sojok; like a pizza, but with a crust like spanakopita. Very tasty, great flavors, unique combination. We could have ordered one less thing, but the leftover Koshari Bowl made a perfect breakfast! IIRC the koshary came promptly after the order, then lemonade, then salad, then other entree, and finally the soup. Would be worth timing smaller dishes to come before the entrees or at least at same time, rather than each plate as it is ready. Either way, the waiter was pleasant and the food was quite good. I had to go up to the counter about 4 times to ask for things as my waiter is too busy to take care of me and my wife. Took 15 minutes before we even got water. The other complaint i have is it looked like mopping is a foreign concept. I counted 3 tables (including mine) with orange food stains underneath. You can see foot steps leading all the way to canton. Looked like they were doing the choreography for shake it up in there. Okay, first off, my paternal biological grandmother was of Egyptian Jewish ancestry. She grew up eating Egyptian food prepared by her mother, aunts and grandmother. And she learned how to cook it as well. Growing up, she prepared Egyptian food for me. There were some dishes that she said she prepared Cairo style, because that is where our Hassoun ancestors lived. And there were other dishes that she made Alexandria style, because that was where some of our relatives lived. So, as a result, I got to experience Egyptian food growing up. However, I haven't had Egyptian food; since, my grandparents moved down South to retire in my my 20s, and I am in my 50s now. Trying this place brought back nostalgia for me, because the food was authentic, and it was really good. These were the flavors that I grew up with. For those whom aren't familiar with Egyptian food, similar dishes from other countries in the Middle East usually aren't as robust and filling. This trip, we tried the Hawawshi and the chicken shawarma Feteer Sharki. The Hawawshi was great. The bread was baked fresh, flaky and flavorful. The ground beef, onion, garlic and bell pepper stuffing was nicely spiced without being overpowering. And the toasted sesame seeds on the bread added a nice nutty texture to it. The Feteer Sharki is kind of like a cross between a calzone and a pizza. This Feteer Sharki had a nicely seasoned chicken shawarma stuffing inside a flaky crust. Topping the crust was cheese, tomatoes, bell peppers and olives. With the crust being seasoned, the chicken being seasoned and seasonings in the toppings, it had layer upon layer of flavor. This Feteer Sharki is the reason why my grandmother used to love Feteer Sharki. As someone of Egyptian Jewish ancestry who grew up eating Egyptian food made by his grandmother, I highly recommend this Egyptian restaurant for its authenticity.
