I met amazing people from all different backgrounds and familiar ones. There were new and amazing restaurants to chose from both ITP and OTP! Each dinner one of the staff was present to introduced each member of the group to one another and provide great starter conversations. I was able to go on several dates from the events, much better than my average through other venues. To the women that complain about the difference in price of the service for women and men; it's simple economics. Single college educated males are in shorter supply in atlanta than single college educated women. Eight a eight has to encourage more men to sign up (to have equal enrollment) by making the men's price point lower. To those women who complain about the "quality" of the men; I'm a surgeon, a FAA medical examiner and a pilot. (FYI I'm a man). I met multiple males that were lawyers or had interesting careers that they made 6 figures at the dinners. Well, I'm torn. I like the concept but not the implementation. I attended 3 dinners, one of which I reached out to the company because there was a "person of interest". Never heard back. Maybe the person wasn't interested which is totally fine with me, but a response would be nice. Since my first three dinners, I have "mismatched" on three and had two more cancelled without explanation. I reached out again to see what was going on but have not been responded to. It is an awful lot of money for that kind of service. The hosts all spend a lot of time discussing Botox, lip injections, etc. that's just not me. Work hard and live simply. "Eight at Eight" is a great concept, but reality falls short of the sales pitch. An expensive lesson in dating. ** See Update Below ** In an age of telecommuting and online-dating, 8at8 aims to fill a definite modern need. The idea is pretty cool and pretty simple: you and seven other singles meet for dinner, and hopefully click. The idea is that the company matches you based on age, interests, and educational background. However, that was not my experience. I actually joined primarily simply to meet new people in the area; dating wasn't my primary focus. Some reviews say that it is clear a lot of thought went into the selection of the parties. My experience is that you'd likely have more in common if you simply picked seven random people on the sidewalk with whom to talk on a given day. While the service touts their selectivity and screening of members, that selectivity and screening seems to simply involve your willingness to pay the $500 or so dollars for the service. My first 8at8 function took place in Atlanta, where the company is headquartered, and where they say they are at their largest, and most active. The dinner was held at a local restaurant, and there were four other 8at8 groups meeting for dinner, staggered about 30 minutes apart at the restaurant. So while I was only seated with one particular group, I was able to observe and interact with a good deal more of the members, and get a feel for the general vibe. In what would turn out to be a good summary for the experience, one of the women at my table asked if this was my first event. She next spent a good deal of time relaying her experiences from a couple of prior dinners. "This is my third dinner. I went to two dinners over a year ago and never came back, and I just chalked it up to a lesson learned. They often call me though in order to fill tables for dinner, and I figured I'd give it another shot", she said. She told me that she'd been completely unimpressed by the men she was meeting through the service. And to be honest, based on the men sitting at my own table, I can certainly understand her point of view. Were I woman, I don't think I would have been overly interested in these guys, either. Nice guys, though. But, like guys randomly picked off the street, they were pretty dull, and weren't bringing much to the table in any fashion most women would find appealing, so to speak. The conversation for much of the evening revolved around what was on television, the weather, and college sports teams. And hey, if that sounds like a good match for you, more power to you. Since they do not allow members to examine their membership roster, it puts you in a situation where you are having dinner with seven other people, perhaps six of whom you would have been able to determine were less than ideal matches, had you had the opportunity. The general vibe of most of the tables was similar to ours; I don't recall seeing any group that appeared to be having a good time. This seemed to be borne out by the hasty exodus as each table made a bee-line for the door once the checks arrived. After this experience, I felt comfortable that the service wasn't for me, and told the staff I didn't see it as a good fit. I asked for a pro-rated refund and was told that refunds were against their policy. They suggested two alternatives: first, that I could sell my remaining dinners to a friend or colleague. Since I felt the service was misrepresenting itself a bit, I wasn't comfortable doing that. They offered to up-sell me to their 'premiere' matchmaking service; a service they say matches people to much closer specifications and interests. I wasnt impressed with the base service, so it didn't seem to make sense to pay another $2500 for further services in the hopes that it would be better. In summary: 8at8 is a great idea, but the execution isn't quite up to what is being sold to customers. For the same price, one could have a couple of years worth of membership at half a dozen paid online-dating sites, and a much higher chance of going on dates with a far better match. I know, because I've done just that. It's great because you may meet someone you never expected to have a connection with. They always have a host at the event so that you don't feel awkward. I love the concept of 8 at 8, especially if you are new to Atlanta or looking to expand your group of friends. It's nice that no one knows each other so everyone is open to meeting new people. However, I would not recommend this for someone who is looking for a relationship. I think the matchmakers match people the best they can, but they can only do so much with their clientele. I do find the service to be a bit expensive, especially as a young professional considering I feel I am being matched more for my age and who is available that night rather than personality and interests. The cost does include a free round of drinks, but does not include the dinner. I do like that the dinner checks are already requested to be separated in order to eliminate the awkwardness at the dinner. I'm glad I tried it and I find it much more enjoyable and comfortable than any online dating sites, but being from Atlanta and looking to make a romantic connection, I just couldn't keep paying the steep price to make new acquaintances. If 8 at 8 could somehow restructure this concept to make it more affordable and attract more clientele in order to better match its clients I think this could be a really amazing business. She threw out several names of men where she thought I would be a good match. She quoted a $4,500 costs for 10 dates. I was supposed to come in for an interview and with my busy schedule I had a conflict and could come in. I've attended several dinners and truly think Eight at Eight is a really good concept and a refreshing alternative to the bar scene and online dating. I also have had great experiences and service from the Eight at Eight team. A couple things: First, have the right expectations. The dinners are almost always fun and a great way to meet new people. However, some dinners can fall a bit flat. How much fun you have at a dinner mostly depends on the chemistry and personalities of the people you're dining with. I think the coordinators try to do their best with the members they have available for the table. Second, in my experience the Eight at Eight team has been very straightforward and transparent with their policies- and have been more than fair. They have to have rules to make sure people don't mess up the dinners for other members (i.e. don't show up). They also have to make some money at what they do- they spend a lot of time and energy working with members and restaurants to coordinate events. My initial thought of this company was that is was going to be like "Millionaire Matchmaker" where hard working men who slaved away to be successful are seeking that beautiful youthful wife who brings a taint of creativity and fun to their life. BOY was I wrong! The reason I spoke about my career was not for vanity, but because I was COMPLETELY judged by Judith or whatever the hell her name is. The moment I spoke to her on the phone, I can literally FEEL the judgement oozing through the phone. That was the first time in my life where I felt "bad" about myself, like I wasn't good enough. There was much hesitation in her voice and a lot of "uhh... Okay?" The reason I guess is because I'm not the "professional" they had in mind. Bitch had the audacity to drop the "Oh these are professionals with graduate degrees" after I told her about myself. The intention of her saying it was to bring me to awareness that I don't "meet" their caliber. She even put me on hold during our conversations. Why? Oh probably to ask her little coworker friend what to do with me because she doesn't think I fit. That's when I hung up on her. Sweetie, don't try to fool me. I may be young but I sure am not stupid. What sealed the deal of how terrible this is was when she dropped the price: $400 and $700. WHAT?! Even if you're a carpenter or a millionaire banker.. That's a LOT of a person's HARD EARNED money. That can be a student loan payment! That's the thing.... It's for the HOPES of finding the "one". There is not guarantee that you're going to find that ideal partner. It's not like in that money you're spending that these women sit down, look at potential individuals, observe their personality, and see which two people fit best. These women don't give a (excuse my language) FUCK about you. They don't genuinely want to search for your soulmate... They want to make money. Judith didn't genuinely ask what I sought in a partner or even tried to understand where I was coming from. She didn't ask CRUCIAL things that are IMPORTANT for any match making service. All they're doing is selling FALSE hopes. I am not saying this because of my experience, but I am saying this for that lonely man who works all day and wants to genuinely find an amazing wife. I don't even need to be an elite match maker to know what these men want: They want love! they want someone to hold them and to cherish them. After that you move one to the table and get to spend the rest of the meal with the people. This service is perfect for people who like to meet you new people and like to try new places. If you go with the mind set that I'm going to enjoy a great meal and talk to some people this will work great. I've met a few girls on which i have gone on first dates which is all you can really ask from the service. They set you up you do the rest. However I will caution everyone that this service is not a match making service. They will put you with people around your age and with like backgrounds but there is no promises that you will absolutely fall in love with everyone the at the table. I've been fortunate to not have a bad table in the five dinners I attended. A couple of dull ones that take time to get going, but nothing bad. Yes, it is possible to meet someone you like, get a phone number, and start seeing one another. I was matched with two girls I ultimately saw and spent time with outside of the dinners. That said, this works as long as you keep your expectations in check. It is more a social gathering than personalized matchmaking. Don't go in expecting a date. Go in expecting a good time. Anything beyond that is up to you. Cons: It's definitely pricey, gentlemen. While being a big step up from online dating, you better be able to spend the money comfortably. The last dinner I attended was very diverse, but I'm not certain that is the norm. Maybe with the younger groups.
