If you're going for a physical and you think you might need to have some lab work done (i.e., a 12-hour fasting blood test for cholesterol), get a morning appointment for your physical and make sure you don't eat before you go in so you can go directly to the lab afterwards. That way, you won't have to come back the next day just for the lab tests and pay another $9 parking. If you're a hiker like me and familiar with the Westwood neighborhood, you can find street parking; metered in the Village itself or free parking in the residential area. It took me 20 minutes to walk from Midvale and Levering. My wife also uses Shirley as her general practitioner, and she loves her. As much as I hate the drive into crowded West LA (everything I need, I can find in the South Bay), my annual physical is something I actually look forward to.

UCLA Medical Center is the most practical and convenient medical practice I have ever been exposed to. When you're in their system, anywhere you go they can pull up all your records and see what's going on. And they usually send you a follow-up review request so you can let UCLA know how you liked your visit. The only unfortunate issue in this visit had nothing to do with the medical center and that was that my appt happened to be on the day after there was an underground explosion on Westwood Blvd., and the entire intersection by the medical center was closed! Luckily I know how to cut through the university so was only delayed a few minutes. Talk about your news trucks all over the place! UCLA Medical, you rock!

The day before my appointment I was notified for MBS (mind body syndrome) / TMS patients there's an extra $130 or 150 (I forget exactly the price) you have to pay out of pocket that's NOT covered by insurance. During the zoom appointment Dr. Schechter was 20 minutes late. He didn't review any of my files and just started reading them right there. Prior to our appointment I was really excited to finally get his diagnosis. I had sent a very organized 100 word summary of my conditions and what's I've tried so far.... and that wasn't read either. During our call, he cut me off several times and ask questions that I had been asked 100 times already by other practitioners, questions that easily would have been answered if he read my summary or any of his forms that his office had asked me to fill out. Towards the end of the call about 10 min prior to our 1 hour time, he was rushing to leave while I still had a lot of questions. Interesting considering he was 20 min late. I learned 0%. Nothing new. It was disappointing, being in pain for so long, hoping someone can help you. After this I sought other methods of help and the Mind body stuff really didn't resonate with me anymore. I still believe in Dr John Sarno's work. There are other mind body doctors that do well but they are out of state (CA). If you're reading this now, I wish you luck in your search. I asked who made the wrong appointment she stated" I don't know probably the janitor" Came back two weeks later once again waited 30 minutes to be seen for pre-op to have veins in leg fixed. Surgery - Very painful procedure, the doctor rambled on with the nurse about her child's travels without once asking how I was doing, when I interrupted I was rudely responded to with one-word answers and told to stay still, going back to her endless rambling with the technician/nurse Post-up Was in very bad pain, came to have the blood left in the voided veins removed. Took severely days to get an appointment. I requested she use Marcaine before sticking large needles to remove the old blood left in veins that were causing pain very close to the bone on my ankle. Was told she does not like to use Marcaine and it "does not hurt that much." After the first needle and my screaming in pain, Marcaine was used. Follow- up The doctor missed many of the smaller veins, I came back for additional treatment. After waiting 55 minutes with an early morning appointment I walked out. The GOOD: Office staff is nice The BAD: Doctor lacks bedside manners and has no regards for anyone else's time but her own.

Dr. Leichter is a vascular surgeon of great skill. She is exceedingly well-educated, and her training has been first-rate. In addition to great technical skill, Dr Leichter has one attribute that is too-often lacking in a surgeon and that is a real-world personality. I have been on her table a total of six times, with two of them being emergency situations. On both of those occasions, I threw a clot and was in danger of bleeding out through my femoral artery. That I am typing this review should tell you all that you need to know about her competence. Here is what comes in addition to the excellent technical skill - real information that you can actually understand! Before every procedure, Dr Leichter calmly; carefully and thoroughly explains what your situation is; the available treatment options; her recommendations ranked in order, and the prognosis going forward. She does this in real-speak, NOT Doctor-babble. By the time you give your consent to a procedure, you are well and truly informed (which doers not happen with every cutter or anesthesiologist). As I said, Dr. Leichter saved my life twice. I would not hesitate to see her again. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone. My wife will become a patient of hers in the next few months. If I even thought that she might like something that was in my power to obtain, i'd call in every favor to get it for her. You do that for people who have kept you breathing. I'm a fan, and if you trust your health to her, I have no doubt that you will become one too.
