The food is really great! It doesn't look like much from the outside but I think that the food El Angel is serving is definitely a step more towards authentic and less Americanized Mexican food. The prices are very affordable and they make handmade tortillas for the quesadilla! I also had a glass of horchata which was very refreshing and light. If you are hoping for the very heavily sauced versions of Mexican cuisine then this might not be your pick but of you want Mexican food that feels more authentic definitely give this place a try! read more

This is the most authentic homemade Mexican food in Springfield. The food is all homemade family recipes and all the staff are family. Not only is the food amazing but there is a great market attached to the restaurant.The family that owns and operates this place are so nice and we love going here. I love Mexican food and this place does it right. I lived in Mexico for a year and this food is def authentic and fresh. I had the huevos mexicana which is simple eggs, rice, and beans with fresh corn tortillas for $5.00.......five dollars! It was spectacular. They have a store/butcher shop attached. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the Eugene/Springfield area. The food is all authentic, hand made, and delicious. If you order any of the dinner or lunch plates, the tortillas that come with it are hand made, fresh for your order. The tortillas for tacos are from the local tortillaria and are also great. Speaking of tacos, they're only $2/each and completely authentic. If you like real Mexican food, you'll love these. Also worth trying is the molcajete, a soup of cactus, shrimp and pork. It comes practically boiling hot in a stone bowl with cheese melting on top. Absolutely delicious. If you're looking for truly authentic Mexican food made with care, give El Angel a try. read more

If you want delicious authentic Mexican food, you've found it. This is the real deal, and without question the best Mexican food we've found in the area. Homemade corn tortillas, homemade beans and everything we tasted was a flavor bomb. We got the molcajete (served in a big stone bowl) which was loaded with shrimp, carne asada and chicken, with nopales and some cheese. I like a bit of a spice burn heat wise and this was just a bit spicier than that so as delicious as it was, if you don't like spicy, this is not for you. The carne asada plate was large and delicious, but by far my favorite was the shrimp cocktail. It was amazing. They use the same large shrimp as in their other dishes but the genius is in the blend of juice it comes in. It may be enough for a smaller appetite but I would get as an appetizer. It's good enough that everyone would want to share anyway. Lots of impressive fresh veggies in everything but as the restaurant opens up into a carnaciera, I'm sure supply of fresh vegetables isn't an issue. If you want something fancy, this isn't the place. If you want to feel like your in Mexico eating real Mexican food, you should give it a try. I was craving Mexican food but wanted to try something new and read the reviews so I ordered the enchilada dinner (chicken) and a steak chimichanga to go. Wow. Very unique flavors. The enchiladas were really light...no heaviness and not drenched in sauce. The tortillas were really good...not thick and the sauce didn't drench them...it was a light sauce that appeared to soak in as they baked. I think it was probably a mole sauce because there was a lightly sweet taste. They were topped with cojita cheese, lettuce and what tasted like blanched onions. The chimichanga was amazing. I don't think I've ever had a chimichanga that didn't taste greasy or over fried. Not the case here. The steak was a tad on the salty side for me but that could have just been because i was going back and forth with the lightly sweet red sauce on the enchiladas. I love Spanish rice but for the first time ever, i didn't want to eat it because it would fill me up and the main dishes were so flavorful and tasty. I'm not a huge refried bean fan. Since i had ordered a couple of lunch/dinner items, i was adding things to my plate (at home) and didn't add the beans, but i took a bite and they were so good i couldn't resist taking another bite. Has become my favorite Mexican restaurant, hands down. We've only gone at lunchtime and it is usually fairly quiet and service is fine. My husband loves their Medudo which the lovely lady who cooks does for him without the hominy. If you like spicy, try the Shrimp Diable. Burritos are very good too. There's other things I need to try. This isn't a fancy looking place. Just good food. read more

A really disappointing experience. Having read all the great reviews, we went there tonight for my wife's birthday. The carne Asada platter had meat that was very much over cooked, full of gristle and fat and none to plentiful. The best thing I can say about this place is that the tortillas and the beans and rice were OK. The service was next to nonexistent. The waitress had her eyes on the TV. And there was only one other man in the whole place when we were there. Not OK. a five-star restaurant this is not. We will not be back. I just wonder if the folks that rave about this place ate at the same place we did. read more
