Overall, this was pretty bland Mexican food. It reminded me of the "Mexiwegian" food that I used to have to put up with in Minnesota. The chips and salsa were good, though it would've been better if the salsa wasn't warm. The chicken taco was bland and the cheese enchilada used soft cheese (like Oaxaca or Chihuahua) which made it feel like I was eating a glue enchilada. Ordered dinner combo #25. It was very soggy and there wasn't any beans in the rice and beans. Chicken was all brown meat. The burrito is more of an enchilada, not what you would expect for a burrito. There is only chicken, no other types of stuffing inside of it; only whatever meat you decide to order. I also ordered a side of guacamole, reminds me of the store bought blended kind. My friends recommended this place to me so I'm unsure of whether this was a mistake or if maybe this is how they prepare take out orders but it wasn't very good at all. read more

My husband and I absolutely love El Azteca, an unassuming and absolutely delicious Mexican restaurant on Newport Avenue. We live on the west coast now, and when we visited RI recently, we wanted to visit the one and only restaurant we missed -- El Azteca! They make authentic, simple, fresh, flavorful Mexican dishes, quickly and cheaply. The place is run by an extended family from Mexico, and they know what they're doing. There's no fancy California fusion exotic stuff here, just straightforward Mexican dishes of beef, rice, chicken, beans, cheese, and all the trimmings. The guacamole is delicious and fresh, and the salsa too. I love the quesadilla rellena roja, and my husband always gets some sort of combo including a burrito or enchilada with hard-shell tacos. The servings are big, the food is always very hot and comes very quickly, and the place is comfortable. Not fancy, very friendly. There's also a full bar and plenty of room for families, kids, and so on. An absolute must-have for anyone in the areas of Providence, Cumberland, Attleboro MA, Pawtucket, and that whole area! read more

Nope. Please don't confuse with the place in Attleboro. It is fairly fast, but so is taco bell. The food at taco bell is fresher and tastier. Top it off with staff that is just not happy to be there. We have been there a few times now and we are done. Just a quick conversation with management/owner at the bar and he could care less that you chose his restaurant for dinner. Aparently eye contact is imposible for wait staff and mgmt. In this economy, ask yourself if you could get by in your job pulling this combo off. Self respecting people, with infinite or limited disposable income, choose another local. Shrimp was bland, tastless, overcooked and poor quality. Expect some popcorn shrimp of the bagged variety. Ground beef was just bad, bland, and gross. I call it shaved beef. Bottom of the barrel poor quality taco / burrito meat made of god knows what. Do not try to adjust menu items as they will nail you on the price. Nothing is fresh. Have heard of health code concerns here. Please go elsewhere as there is much better Mexican, with similar prices, and fresher ingredients just down the road in Providence. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, RUN! The food here is some agglomeration of Tex-Mex, and I do not know what. We are frequent travelers to both Mexico, where we have a condo, and to Southern California. I could not say how many regional Mexican restaurants we've eaten at -- from high end to roadside taco stands -- in now 30 years of travel. I've never encountered anything quite this bad. The chips were bland and greasy. The salsa tasted like it had come out of a jar, and was decidedly not fresh. When I asked about green sauce, I was met with a look of befuddlement; the staff had never heard of salsa verde, which is extremely common in Mexican cuisine. The chicken enchiladas were, in a a word, terrible. The tortilla in which they were encased tasted stale, and the chicken may well have been past its prime for serving, though no one became ill (thankfully). The red sauce (which was decidedly not authentic to any regional Mexican cuisine of which I know) could not mask the poor quality of the ingredients. Definitely would recommend seeking out alternatives. read more

So I went in for the first time with my 2 friends and wasn't impressed with the place and the food. So I just drank water and ate nachos with salsa dip. Then my friends ordered food and when they got their plates, it was both spicy. One of my friends got a steak salad, there was more onions in it then any steak and she wasn't happy when she didn't get any mushrooms. Such a delight to find a reasonably priced down home Mexican place. The atmosphere is a bit weak, but the food more then makes up for it! Get a pitcher of margaritas for 2 people, such a great deal. We started off with guacamole and chips and salsa. I went with my boyfriend and got a spinach and cheese quesadilla to go with my vegetable fajitas. the BEST spinach and cheese quesadilla we have ever had. We had doubts when we ordered it, but whats not to love about fresh spinach you could tell was sauteed to order, great flavor. We highly recommend it. The vegetable fajitas came with a generous portion of perfectly flavored peppers and onions, broccoli and mushrooms. My boyfriend ordered two burritos which came swimming in a green chile, which he devoured. We are die hard Mexican food lovers, and great Mexican in RI is really tough to find. This place is pretty darn good, and very reasonable! Fresh chips, homemade salsa, and nice size portions. Based on the number of Mexican themed places opening up in Seekonk/area, looks like Mexican is the "cuisine du jour" - but this place is still #1 for us. Can't wait to go back! It was the first time at this restaurant, It was my sisters birthday and the service was awful. The waitress didn't even take her time for us to tell her what we wanted to order and give her instructions on how we wanted it. We had to ask if she had heard us when we ordered the appetizers and she said yes but we wanted it with chicken not beef. She was like to bad its already done. We had ordered a special nacho is sure was special never have i seen an ugly dish. First of all the meat was under all the lettuce and with slices of tomatoes not even diced tomatoes, the amount of meat was almost even absent. Food was very average and bland tasting, with the exception of the salsa that was served with the chips (and the fact that the chips were hot when they were brought to our table!) if i could give this place zero stars i would. i just left this place and it was by far the worst experience i have ever experienced. first off we got there on mothers day at around 8 and it was not busy at all like maybe 5 tables in the whole restaurant.. bad sign.... so my husband and i sit at the bar where there is a woman there doing who knows what, does not acknowledge us at all so i say hi and she responds and thats it....nothing else.....maybe they did not know i was hispanic or what but i overhear the other waitress trying to decide who will serve us....great customer service right? so any who we order a corona and a frozen margarita....i taste the margarita and it literally taste like nothing so i inform the woman behind the bar that it does not taste like anything...she had actually mixed this....and said how odd and continued about her business, putting cups away...once she was done she came over and literally through my drink in the blender added a pocket of sweet and low and blended it....then put the drink back in front of...okay still tasted like nothing. so my husband and i ordered a number 26 with chicken and a chicken and cheese quesadilla. the food comes out and my plate is drowning in red sauce, his plate is literally a small quesadilla with not even sour cream....its a mexican restuarant, if your does not come with not even quesadilla the server should have said something right? so anywho we tell the server that this looks awful she said nothing and whisks the plates away no sorry no nothing so at this point i am furious and ask to speak to the manager, he comes out and begins to argue that my husband ordered a plain appetizer quesadilla even though the quesadilla is not part of the appetizer section and literally begins to argue with me about it, the first bartended who did not acknowledge us started saying how she had asked us if we wanted something even tough she did not take our order, again this woman did not acknowledge us so i did not care to hear from her. however, i have never experienced a manager literally go back and forth with a customer like this, maybe because i spoke spanish they felt like they could treat me how they wanted but i am disgusted by how they acted i can not believe this is how they treat their guests. shocked to say the least read more
