This family run business has hosted all sorts of events for our family and the food is excellent! The staff has been there for years and welcomes us every time we are there. Stopped there for lunch yesterday. It's a typical, cheap Mexican Restaurant. Food is OK but the decor leaves a lot to wish for. They put 2 tables with umbrellas in front of the restaurant ( on the parking lot ) instead of in the back. That's what they're missing...a nice patio in the back ( behind the restaurant ). I take an annual drive past here from new paltz, and made a point to stop in recently for my second visit. Food is pretty good for the area, fresh ingredients, etc. festive decor and attentive wait staff. It was slow both times (I came during off hours) and the spanish tv at the bar added the perfect kind of daytime charm. Salsa and guac are delicious! Will prob stop here again next year. read more

Great place. I usually go there to grab a cold beer (frosted mugs--nice touch) on a hot day and chow down on their KILLER chilaquiles. They also have a great guacamole. Fresh and made to order. Great experience. The staff was very attentive and the service was on the mark. Very clean throughout from the dining room to the restrooms. The meal was filling and worth the price. My favorites there are the margaritas, guacamole and the chili rellenos. El Azteca, by far, beats out Hacienda and El Bandido on prices, service and food quality. I love this place...i actually skip work with my husband to go there for lunch...the salsa is great...i always buy extra and bring it home for snacks for the week....I have never been disappointed in my meals... We always get a small pitcher of house margarita's and that is great also...the portions are nice i always end up bringing extra home.... I do think that for the lunch crowd they should make smaller portions and lower the prices...as far as I can tell that is the only downfall... I love this place.... read more

The service was terrible. While the waiter took our order he watched TV. Really a bad experience. When my younger brother tried ordering tacos, he made it seem like our questions were somewhat dumb. Food was okay with rice portions very small. Not once were we asked for a refill even though all our drinks were empty. We came to this place after having been in the area for an event & some wanted Mexican food as it had become tradition after previous events. This place was the only one within a reasonable driving distance (we were HUNGRY) and had some really good reviews. The food was excellent, portions were generous & it was priced right. The reason for only four stars is the service was lacking. They were CLEARLY short staffed that night (with only 3 guys working)It took a half an hour to be seated after being told "Two minutes". The place wasn't overly busy but with only 3 guys (and one manning the bar at the same time) it was too much. It also took another 10 mins at our table to have someone take even a drink order. We had to flag someone down to let them know we were ready (we also put our food order in then). The food came out quickly which was great as we were starving by that time. The waiter attending to us was very nice & friendly & had a smile the entire time. Overall we were happy. read more

The two best menu items are salsa and chips, and guacamole. Everything else is extremely salty, and under seasoned. I ordered takeout yesterday, of course they would not accept my restaurant.com gift certificate, stating it's for "eat-in" only. Too bad I wont be back. We went here for a small pre- xmas get together. The place was spotless from the walls to the floor. The guacamole was homemade and fresh along with the salsa. The service was attentive to our needs. It would have been a 5 star, but they like to smother everything with cheese. Now there is nothing wrong with cheese, but there does come a point after apps smothered in cheese that the entree smothered in cheese was too much.
