We went here to try out new Texmex/Mexican restaurants in Austin instead of our typical go-to spots. The food was quite tasty, and the salsa was exactly how I prefer it to be - moderately spicy with a nice garlic kick. We got the fajitas because this is how I usually compare TexMex restaurants. One thing I loved was that it was not oily like some restaurants tend to make them. The only thing about this place that I took one star off of was the ambiance. It's a small, quaint joint that is very authentic in its vibe. That's absolutely lovely, but it's the type of setting where you'd come to purely eat only. You know good food is here when there is a que of workers going for their lunch break. After reading reviews and seeing pictures of their menudo I absolutely had to try this spot. In Austin I over ate at every meal which I did here, big ass bowl of menudo helped me recover from the many Texas beers the night before. After eating the menudo I have ever had I then ordered a mole enchilada simple dish very complex flavors. You may taste a little sweetness from the chocolate or raisins a little heat from the peppers. Who knows I couldn't come close to making a good mole sauce. Totally different flavors here from the other Mexican restaurant, both superb in all aspects of what great food should be or taste , enjoy it ! read more

Dropped in for lunch today and it was SO good. The iced tea was perfect. Chips were hot and crisp, the salsa had just the right amount of heat. The #1 combo plate had a crispy taco, which was excellent as to crispness of shell, and taste of the tender beef. We live in Round Rock so this place may as well be in Nebraska from a distance perspective. We found a way to South Austin and ended up at this place because of Yelp. Hands down one of the best Mexican meal I've had in Texas. We actually said we would drive back down here just to eat here again. Their chips or crispy and light and their salsa pack a delicious punch. My husband had mole chicken enchiladas and thoroughly enjoyed them. I've never been a fan of mole sauce but these were awesome. Our son had a chicken enchilada with a side of rice and beans and ate almost the entire kids plate. I forgot to mention he's only 22 month old. I had my usual, when I try a new place that has tacos, 1 Al pastor, 1 beef fajita, and 1 barbacoa. I asked for all of them with cilantro and onions and fresh peppers. They were fantastic ! It's family owned, and there'a picture of Selena at the door so you know it's good people. Chips were fresh and staff was super friendly to give us more. I was suggested the tortilla soup so I went with it. It was very good but there was like too much cheese in the soup. It wasn't a good cheese to soup ratio. I was left with a big ball of cheese in the end. We also got a queso but it was not what we were imagining. It was melted cheese on top of mushrooms and onions on a grill plate. Have been wanting to try this place since it is so close to my house on South Congress, but am not dying to go back. The service is super slow - we had to ask individually for everything - water, and extra napkin, more chips, etc. There is no sense of urgency or customer service/checking in on the customers. The food was alright - we got the queso fundido, nachos, and a few tacos. It was pretty reasonably priced and the portions were pretty big. Also, the website is a lie - there is no dessert :( read more

This is for their barbacoa tacos and salsa: The tacos are substantial with plenty of rich succulent meat plus cilantro y chopped onion for garnish. The red salsa is tasty with a nice kick. For something extra, ask for their green sauce. I don't know what's in it, but it adds nicely to the flavor, especially with a squeeze of lime. The venue itself is old style Mexican restaurant. Nothing fancy but very comfortable with friendly service and decent coffee. I love barbacoa and can't find the good stuff in SoCal, if at all. There, barbacoa is shredded beef with BBQ sauce. Their equivalent of barbacoa is called cabeza (head) and is chopped up and greasy, which ruins the texture. I have barbacoa every time I come to Austin to get my fix. Try it out. read more

This is perhaps my favorite spot to grab breakfast in Austin. Migas con chorizo plate is what I always order. With extra tortillas. Make sure to ask for the salsa verde, the creamy green jalapeño sauce. El Borrego makes the best salsa verde around Austin. Food is always plentiful and excellent. The waitress also didn't bring the chips and salsa as they usually do. She was very courteous and friendly just a little overwhelmed so I didn't complain. The cashier also overcharged me 2 dollars. One of the only good mexican places ive found in Austin. I typically get the queso flamedo and lengua tacos! The queso flamedo is huge and comes with mushrooms, jalapenos, chorizo and onions. Its super delicious and sometimes I order it as my main dish! The lengua here is great, I also have been getting their breakfast tacos lately which are cheap and a great value. read more
